Assignments(Classwork & Homework)

● Classwork and Homework will be assigned during class periods. Students will be given adequate time to copy the daily assignments. (Please make sure your child has a planner to keep track of their schoolwork.)

● Posting of Assignments: Homework will be posted on Google Classroom. Google Classroom and the SMS Teacher Websites are communication tools allowing teachers/families to support the middle school student in becoming organized with their assignments and information about school-wide events.

● Submitting Assignments: Google Classroom will be utilized to submit most assignments electronically. Math will be a paper copy with student work shown. ELA will have a balance of typed (electronically) and handwritten (paper) essays.

Assignments● Parents are responsible for accessing PowerSchool (online

gradebook) to check on completed assignments.

● Middle School students should be reading independently for at least 30 minutes each night and will maintain a digital log.

● Homework may not be done in school. It is assigned as a reinforcement of the concepts taught in class and, additionally, it is an opportunity for parent/child to connect over the lessons learned.

Grading● Grades will be posted on PowerSchool within 2 days of a quiz or test

and no more than 5 days for written reports or projects.● Students will be given a minimum of 3 days notice prior to a quiz or test.● For every day a long term assignment is late, it will be lowered a letter

grade. After 3 days late, it will be an automatic 55%. Students will not be allowed to submit assignments for credit after three days.

● Any student caught cheating or helping someone cheat will receive a 55%.

o We will follow the Reader’s Workshop model in class.

o Students will explore a variety of short stories, nonfiction articles, and novels.

● Students will be responsible for completing assignments related to the readings.

o At the conclusion of each novel, story or article, there will be a test.

o Students will be required to have an independent book with them each day.

● Student will complete a monthly book project, which will include a choice board activity.

● Assignment expectations for the project will be given in class.

o Students will complete one 5-paragraph essay per month.

● Genres include Personal Narrative, Argumentative, Expository, etc.

o Student will be provided with a rubric on the first day of a new writing assignment.

o Students will follow the Writing Process (brainstorming/pre-writing, rough draft writing, revision, editing, final publishing).

o One multi-page research paper will be written at the end of the school year.

o Students will be given new vocabulary words every two weeks.

● Vocabulary words will be taken from Sadlier’s Vocabulary Workshop.● Vocabulary Lists may also include words from in-class novels, stories, and articles,

as well as 100 Words for Middle Schoolers by American Heritage Dictionaries.

o Students will be responsible for completing activities off of a choice menu.

● A rubric will be given for the menu activities.● There will be a quiz on vocabulary words every two weeks. Students must be able

to recall the definition of the given set of words. Students may also be assessed on proper spelling, part of speech, and synonym/antonym.

o Students will be responsible for maintaining an interactive notebook, which will become a wonderful reference tool as the year progresses.

● Notebooks will be checked at various times without prior notice, so it is important for notebooks to be neat and organized at all times.

● Student will be provided with a rubric for their interactive notebook.● Students will be quizzed on the material (grammar quizzes will not occur during

the same week as vocabulary quizzes).➢ Public Speaking

o Students will give a 1-2 minute presentation twice during the year.

o After the first presentation, students will reflect on their experience and create a goal for the next presentation.

o Students will be provided with a rubric.
