where it indicates ‘Parent-Teacher comments’ each night M-Th. I also encourage you to have your child read to you!

2.2. Backpack page: Backpack page: Each night, your child will bring home a backpage page that will reinforce skills based on current spelling/phonics pattern. If the Backpack page is a fluency passage, please listen to your child read the article a few times throughout the week. With repeated practice, the reading should become smoother and more accurate. **The fluency pages do not need to be returned to school.

3.3. MathMath: Each night, your child will also have math homework reflecting the skills/concepts of that day’s lesson.

Birthdays/ CelebrationsBirthdays/ Celebrations

Philly Soft Pretzels Please notify me in advance if you plan to send Philly Soft Pretzel pretzels as a treat for our class to celebrate your child’s birthday. *This is the only food item that should be sent in as it has been approved by each family in our classroom.* Please do not send in any food items until I have responded and confirmed the request. Non-food treats is a great alternative as well! I would like to make sure every child has what they need and are celebrated properly, which can be done through communication of what is being sent in and when.

Party in a Bag In order to honor the Food Policy at Pearl Buck Elementary, our class will be utilizing the ‘partyparty inin aa bagbag’ for class celebrations/ events/holidays. Details:

● A brown paper bag/ gallon sized Ziploc labeled with your child’s name

● Your child may decorate the bag ● Please provide any snack(s) your child would like to eat ● A drink

The most important aspect of ‘Party in a bag’ is knowing that what is put in your child’s bag is what your child will specifically eat/drink and the belongings in the bag will not be shared with fellow classmates. Information of when we will use the ‘party in a bag’ for any special occasions will be sent with ample time to prepare.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Progress ReportsProgress Reports

Neshaminy elementary schools utilize a standards-basedreport. This type of progress report lists the most important standards students should learn in each subject at their

particular grade level. The marks will show their level of achievement with the Pennsylvania Core State Standards. Students will get separate marks for characteristics of a successful learner. Standards-based grading focuses on the student’s achievement rather than how quickly they learned or howmany times it took them to master the standards. This scale is alpha (E, M, A, I)and provides information on a student’s progress on the skills and standards that make up each major category. This mark will assist parents in understanding the areas of strength and challenge for each category.

Second Grade CurriculumSecond Grade Curriculum

Superkids Reading Program Second grade is an important school year in which children must cross the bridge from learning to read, a child’s most important task in kindergarten and first grade, to reading to learn, a child’s most important task in future years. To help us on this journey, our class will be using Superkids, a highly motivational core reading and language arts program. Each day, our class will have Word Work to review and expand on the essential phonics, spelling, and grammar skills children learned in first grade. Children will read stories about their friends—the Superkids—and also popular trade-book fiction in the Book Club for Super Kids. The Book Club includes longer chapter books in a variety of genres. Children will also explore real-word science, social studies, and arts topics in SUPER, an informational magazine created just for second graders. At the end of each week, we’ll have a spelling test. Your child will bring home Backpack Pages to practice the spelling words. One Backpack Page each week will help your child develop another important skill, fluency. Fluency is the ability to read smoothly and accurately at a speed that’s not too slow or fast. Please have your child practice reading aloud the story or informational article on the Backpack Page multiple times during the week. With each reading, your child should be able to read more fluently. You can expect to see your child will grow tremendously as a reader and writer throughout the school year.

*Information comes directly from Superkids website.

Writing Second grade will be utilizing a writing program called Schoolwide’s Writing Fundamentals as the primary resource for writing workshop. In addition, there will also be lessons in Superkids that compliment Schoolwide and help to either reteach or enrich. Second Grade Units of Study:Second Grade Units of Study:

1. How Writers Work 2. Gail Gibbons Nonfiction Author Study

Information/Explanatory 3. Folktales, Fairy Tales, and Fables Narrative 4. The Fundamentals of Grammar and Convention 5. Letter Writing – Opinion/Argument

The Daily 5 A literacy structure founded by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead each of them to a lifetime of literacy independence. The Daily 5 is also defined by educators as more of a management system or a curriculum framework structure that allows for differentiation in the classroom and provides consistency in both reading and writing. This structure also promotes student independence by teaching students how to be actively engaged in the five literacy tasks which make up the Daily 5. The five Daily 5 tasks are:The five Daily 5 tasks are: 1. Read to Self Read to Self – Students read to self building their reading stamina as the year progresses. Research states that the best way to become a better reader is by practicing each day, with books the students choose and are a "Good Fit" for them.

2. Work on WritingWork on Writing – Students work on improving their writing skills through various writing activities and prompts. This includes thinking critically about the literature they are reading in class by responding to questions about their books content in their Reading Response Journals. In addition, students will also have opportunities to write letters to me about the active reading strategies they are using as they read as well as tell me about the events or ideas they are reading about in their books. Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is by practicing writing each day. 3. Read to SomeoneRead to Someone – Students will practice their level of fluency by reading to a partner. Partner reading allows students to practice with their peers as they build their level of fluency, check for understanding, hear their own voice as well as coach their peers to become better readers. 4. Word WorkWord Work – Students practice their weekly phonemic sort through various hands-on activities. Students with expanded vocabulary and correct spelling are more fluent in reading and writing. In addition, students with a sound phonemic sense are known to have a greater ability to comprehend what is read. 5. Listen to Reading Listen to Reading – Students listen to various genres of literature. Hearing good examples of literature through fluent reading expands one’s vocabulary, builds stamina and helps one become an overall better reader.

Mathematics Math in Focus

Math in Focus is a problem-based approach which thoughtfully builds on a concrete-to-pictorial-to-abstract progression for greater depth of instruction and mastery of math concepts. Visualization strategies including model drawing allow all students to master more complex problems. The program also uses powerful number bond models to enhance the instruction for mental math, number sense, and computation. The scope and sequence of the 2nd grade curriculum is listed below. Please note that some chapters and/or sections may be taught out of sequence.

2nd Grade Scope and Sequence Chapter 1 – Place Value with Numbers up to 1,000 Chapter 2 – Addition up to 1,000 Chapter 3 – Subtraction to 1,000 Chapter 4 - Using Bar Models: Addition and Subtraction Chapter 5 – Multiplication and Division Chapter 6 - Multiplication Tables of 2, 5 and 10 Chapter 15 - Multiplication Tables of 3 and 4 Chapter 16 – Using Bar Models for Multiplication and Division Chapter 7 – Metric Measurement of Length Chapter 13 – Customary Measurement of Length Chapter 10 – Mental Math and Estimation Chapter 11 - Money Chapter 12 - Fractions Chapter 14 - Time Chapter 19 – Shapes and Patterns Chapter 17 – Graphs: Picture, Line, Bar **Once all other chapters are complete, students will be exposed to Mass, Volume and Lines and Surfaces.

Think Central  access from home

You may access 2nd grade Math in Focus materials including the virtual manipulatives, which are very similar to the concrete manipulatives we will be using in class. Go to www.thinkcentral.comwww.thinkcentral.com and then enter the username and password that was sent home the during the first few weeks of school.

Math Fluency It is very important for students to learn their basic math facts so that they become automatic. Two seconds would be enough time to give an answer. According to brain research, when a child knows facts fluently, he/she will be able to concentrate on learning new and more difficult math concepts because the math facts are in his/her long term memory. What we have learned from our new program is that before a child can learn their facts automatically, they need to understand what the facts mean.

Science FOSS-Full Option Science System

This is an inquiry-based Science program. FOSS capitalizes on children’s naturally inquisitive nature. Students will guide their own learning through discovery, questions, and hands-on experimentation. The FOSS system is comprised of a series of kits that will teach two science modules. Module 1Module 1: Insects (Adult Change Insect Larva Pupa Stage Habitat Nymph Egg Growth Caterpillar Metamorphosis Chrysalis Butterfly) Module 2Module 2: Soils (Texture, Soil Composition, Composting)
