1.2: GENERAL INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE SECTOR

Information technology (IT) is concerned with technology to treat information. The Indian

Information Technology sector can be classified into the following broad categories - IT Services, Engineering Services, ITES-BPO Services and E Business. IT Services can further be categorized into Information Services (IS) outsourcing, packaged software support and installation, systems integration, processing services, hardware support and installation and IT training and education. Engineering Services include Industrial Design, Mechanical Design, Electronic System Design (including Chip/Board and Embedded Software Design), Design Validation Testing, Industrialization and Prototyping. IT Enabled Services are services that use telecom networks or the Internet. For example, Remote Maintenance, Back Office Operations, Data Processing, Call Centers, Business Process Outsourcing, etc. IT sector is attracting considerable interest not only as a vast market but also as potential production base by international companies. Therefore India is considered as a pioneer in software development and a favorite destination for IT-enabled services. The rapid growth in the sector is a consequence of access to trained English speaking professionals, cost competitiveness and quality telecommunications infrastructure. Companies operating from India are able to leverage the advantage of the Indian time zone to offer 24 x 7 services to their global customers. Several world leaders including General Electric, British Airways, American Express, and Citibank, have outsourced call center operations to India. E Business (electronic business) is carrying out business on the Internet; it includes buying and selling, serving customers and collaborating with business partners.

The following are some of the strengths of the Indian IT sector: · Highly skilled human resource · Low wage structure · Quality of work · Initiatives taken by the Government (setting up Hi-Tech Parks and implementation of e- governance projects); · Many global players have set-up operations in India like Microsoft, Oracle, Adobe, etc. · Following Quality Standards such as ISO 9000, SEI CMM etc.; · English-speaking professionals; · Cost competitiveness; · Quality telecommunications infrastructure.

The following are some of the weaknesses of the sector: · Absence of practical knowledge; · Dearth of suitable candidates; · Less Research and Development; · Contribution of IT sector to India’s GDP is still rather small; · IT development concentrated in a few cities only.

A. Origen of the Industry

Four basic periods Characterized by a principal technology used to solve the input, processing, output and communication problems of the time: 1. Premechanical 2. Mechanical, 3. Electromechanical, and 4. Electronic

The Pre-mechanical Age: 3000 B.C. - 1450 A.D.

1. Writing and Alphabets--communication. 1. First humans communicated only through speaking and picture drawings. 2. 3000 B.C., the Sumerians in Mesopotamia (what is today southern Iraq) devised cuniform 3. Around 2000 B.C., Phoenicians created symbols 4. The Greeks later adopted the Phoenician alphabet and added vowels; the Romans gave the letters Latin names to create the alphabet we use today. 2. Paper and Pens--input technologies. 1. Sumerians' input technology was a stylus that could scratch marks in wet clay. 2. About 2600 B.C., the Egyptians write on the papyrus plant 3. Around 100 A.D., the Chinese made paper from rags, on which modern-day papermaking is based. 3. Books and Libraries: Permanent Storage Devices. 1. Religious leaders in Mesopotamia kept the earliest "books" 2. The Egyptians kept scrolls 3. Around 600 B.C., the Greeks began to fold sheets of papyrus vertically into leaves and bind them together. 4. The First Numbering Systems. 1. Egyptian system: The numbers 1-9 as vertical lines, the number 10 as a U or circle, the number 100 as a coiled rope, and the number 1,000 as a lotus blossom. 2. The first numbering systems similar to those in use today were invented between 100 and 200 A.D. by Hindus in India who created a nine-digit numbering system. 3. Around 875 A.D., the concept of zero was developed.

Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) 1946. Used vacuum tubes (not mechanical devices) to do its calculations. Hence, first electronic computer. Developers John Mauchly, a physicist, and J. Prosper Eckert, an electrical engineer The Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania Funded by the U.S. Army. Early 1940s, Mauchly and Eckert began to design the EDVAC - the Electronic Discreet Variable Computer. John von Neumann's influential report in June 1945: "The Report on the EDVAC" British scientists used this report and outpaced the Americans. Max Newman headed up the effort at Manchester University Where the Manchester Mark I went into operation in June 1948-- becoming the first stored-program computer. Maurice Wilkes, a British scientist at Cambridge University, completed the EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator) in 1949-- two years before EDVAC was finished. Thus, EDSAC became the first stored-program computer in general use (i.e., not a prototype).

4. The First General-Purpose Computer for Commercial Use: Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC).

1. Late 1940s, Eckert and Mauchly began the development of a computer called UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer) Remington Rand. First UNIVAC delivered to Census Bureau in 1951. But, a machine called LEO (Lyons Electronic Office) went into action a few months before UNIVAC and became the world's first commercial computer. 2. The Four Generations of Digital Computing. 1. 3. The Third Generation (1964-1979).

4. The Fourth Generation (1979- Present). 0. Large-scale and very large-scale integrated circuits (LSIs and VLSICs) 1. Microprocessors that contained memory, logic, and control circuits (an entire CPU = Central Processing Unit) on a single chip. Which allowed for home-use personal computers or PCs, like the Apple (II and Mac) and IBM PC Apple II released to public in 1977, by Stephen Wozniak and Steven Jobs. Initially sold for $1,195 (without a monitor); had 16k RAM. First Apple Mac released in 1984. IBM PC introduced in 1981. Debuts with MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) Fourth generation language software products E.g., Visicalc, Lotus 1-2-3, dBase, Microsoft Word, and many others. Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) for PCs arrive in early 1980s

MS Windows debuts in 1983, but is quite a clunker. Windows wouldn't take off until version 3 was released in 1990

Apple's GUI (on the first Mac) debuts in 1984.

Origen of the Industry in India

The journey of Indian IT industry started in 1974, when Burroughs, mainframe manufacturer,

offered Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to export programmers for the installation of system software for its US client. But the situation was very worse that no local business firm was supported and the policy of Indian Government towards private companies was also very aggressive. The Indian IT industry was started by a Bombay-based corporation which entered the business with the supply of programmers to IT companies located overseas.

Till 1984, IT was not considered as an industry and was not given any subsidies. In 1984,

some strategic reforms were made and considered IT as an industry. In the same year, Indian Government introduced a policy, New Computer Policy (NCP), which consisted of a package of slashed import tariffs on hardware and software. And the policy also recognized the software exports as a ‘delicensed industry’. Delicensed industry is eligible for bank finances, free from the license-permit and to set up offshore units of foreign companies in India.

B. Growth and present status of industry

India's IT industry has recorded phenomenal growth over the last decade. During the period from 1992-2001, the compounded annual growth rate of the Indian IT services industry has been over 50%. The software sector in India has grown at almost double the rate of the US software sector.

The statistics of the India's IT industry substantiates the huge momentum acquired by the IT sector in the recent past. During the financial year 2000-2001, the software industry in India accounted for $8.26 billion. The corresponding figure was $100 million 10 years back.

As per the report of a study undertaken by NASSCOM-McKinsey, the software export from Indian IT industry is likely to reach 50 billion US dollars in the year 2008. This growth rate of the software sector for the year 2008 has been projected on the basis of the 35% per year growth rate achieved in the last couple of years.

Export of software and services from India is expected to add almost 41 billion US dollars to the annual revenue of the Indian government in the current year. The share of technology industry in India's GDP is expected to reach 5.5% in 2008; while the corresponding figure in 1998 was as small as 1.2%.The study of NASSCOM has revealed that the growth of India's IT industry has prompted the growth of Indian exports by almost 36%. Another favorable effect of India's IT boom is the expansion of opportunities of employment. By the end of fiscal year 2008, the IT sector of India is expected to employ around 2 million skilled Indian youths.

The growth of India's IT sector has brought about many other positive changes in the Indian economy. The purchasing power of a large section of Indian population has increased dramatically. This has resulted in an increase in the average standard of living of the majority of population of the country. The increase in purchasing power of the common people has propelled the growth rate of the other sectors of the economy as well.

There has been considerable increase in the amount of fund available for venture capitalism and equity financing.

India is now home to a number of IT giants. The operations of IT firms like Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Cap Gemini, Tata Consultancy Services and many more in different locations of India have changed the entire scenario of the Indian job market. The ITES sector has also come up to complement the growth of Indian IT sector.

The economic effect of the technologically inclined services sector in India—accounting for 40% of the country's GDP and 30% of export earnings as of 2006, while employing only 25% of its workforce—is summarized by Sharma (2006):

The share of IT (mainly software) in total exports increased from 1% in 1990 to 18% in 2001. IT-enabled services such as back office operations, remote maintenance, accounting, public call centres, medical transcription, insurance claims, and other bulk processing are rapidly expanding. Indian companies such as HCL, TCS, Wipro, and Infosys may yet become household names around the world.

Today, Bangalore is known as the Silicon Valley of India and contributes 33% of Indian IT Exports. India's second and third largest software companies are head-quartered in Bangalore, as are many of the global SEI-CMM Level 5 Companies.

Mumbai too has its share of IT companies that are India's first and largest, like TCS and well established like Reliance, Patni, LnT Infotech, i-Flex, WNS, Shine, Naukri, Jobspert etc. are head-quartered in Mumbai. And these IT and dot com companies are ruling the roost of Mumbai's relatively high octane industry of Information Technology.

Such is the growth in investment and outsourcing, it was revealed that Cap Gemini will soon have more staff in India than it does in its home market of France with 21,000 personnel+ in India.

On 25 June 2002 India and the European Union agreed to bilateral cooperation in the field of science and technology. A joint EU-India group of scholars was formed on 23 November 2001 to further promote joint research and development. India holds observer status at CERN while a joint India-EU Software Education and Development Center is due at Bangalore.

Trivandrum is the capital of Kerala. GOK provides a good platform for IT Trivandrum development in the city with India's largest IT park Technopark and dedicated Technocity SEZs.

This rapidly growing industrial hub houses a lot of IT/ITES and BPO giants. Genpact, Connexions IT services, Deutsche Bank and EXL BPO, Infosyss, Tech Mahindra, and Wipro are here. There are plans to build the largest IT SEZ in India by Mahindra under the Mahindra World City.

What is the mean of the customer relationship management and which is the best way to maintain customer relationship in IT industry?

My key learning is that relationship with customer helps to increase brand loyalty and it’s a long term strategy which helps to increase sales revenue year by year. The aim of CRM is to establish a relationship with one’s customers through affinities, personalized communications, and product/service offerings. For CRM to work effectively, a database is required. While CRM relies on technology specifically designed for managing customer relationships, there are overlapping characteristics of CRM and database marketing. Suffice it to say at this point that many of the techniques employed in database marketing are necessary to develop an effective CRM program. Numerous other companies have established comprehensive databases on existing and potential customers both in the United States and internationally. IMC Perspective 14-1 provides additional examples. Database marketing has become so ubiquitous that many people are concerned about invasion of privacy. Direct marketers are concerned as well. The Direct Marketing Association (DMA), the trade association for direct marketers, has asked its members to adhere to ethical rules of conduct in their marketing efforts. It points out that if the industry does not police itself, the government will.

CRM becomes more important because its increase the awareness of the organization and with the help of feedback forms we can improve the quality service. We can customize our product as the preferences of the customer. It’s difficult because customers had unlimited need and want and not easy to satisfy him/her.

Because of this reason I suggested my mentor that Sir first we have make a certain criteria which we can improve according to consumer needs. My mentor told me that face to face interaction more important as compare virtual interaction. But in B2B business clients has not enough time so we are put a mail in the mailbox of the client and weight for positive response of the client.

A Brief History of ERP

By the 1970s, this had evolved into Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems for scheduling production processes.

In the 1980s, MRP grew to encompass more manufacturing processes, prompting many to call it MRP-II or Manufacturing Resource Planning. By 1990, these systems had expanded beyond inventory control and other operational processes to other back-office functions like accounting and human resources, setting the stage for ERP as we've come to know it.

How ERP work?

ERP combines several innovative and conventional regulatory tools in a repeating process to improve or sustain overall sector performance. Compliance assistance materials explain what facilities need to do, facility certifications state that they are doing it, and agency inspections of a representative sample of facilities document and verify overall sector performance. Performance data, in turn, inform and help states improve the next round of compliance assistance and better target enforcement actions.

Processing speed: Out of 40 clients, 6 peoples are satisfied with the speed of the Dream Land software and other 17 people are not completely satisfied but they processing speed of the Dream Land was good, 12 people told that its speed average and rest of the 5 people are not satisfied.

Cost of the software: Out of 40 clients, 4 peoples are completely satisfied with the cost of the software and 7 peoples are slightly agreed that the cost of the software fine as the comparison of competitor. 27 peoples told that the software cost not high or not low its average and rest of the 2 peoples told that the cost of the software was bad for this reason we concluded that the cost of the software is good . Good means affordable in price.

Outcome quality: Out of 40 clients, 11 peoples are completely satisfied with the outcome of the dream land and 19 peoples were slightly satisfied with the outcome of the software, 7 peoples are told that outcome of the Dream Land average hence we comes on that result outcome quality of the was good.

Complexity: Out of 40 clients, 21 people told that it was complex and 7 people told that it’s slightly complex i.e. 1/3 of the people told that its complex as compare than their expectation hence we have to reduce the complexity of the dream Land.

5.3 Limitation

Sampling was a bit confined to certain regions more areas could have been touched. Limited time frame restricted most of the visit. Less number of patients visits the hospitals. Because of less power most of the potential zones were left untouched.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there were many things that I have experience and learned during

my winter Training at RPJ Infotech Pvt Ltd. The whole training period was very interesting,

instructive and challenging. I found a great potential of ERP software in IT industry . Through

this training I was able to gain new insights and more comprehensive understanding about how

to prepare feedback form and conduct market research and also presenting presentations at the

front of clients. The 45 days training also has provided me the opportunities to develop and

improve my communication skills and interpersonal skills. I had gained a good experience

talking with the patients as well as with the clients. As my internship, I found out that ERP

software acts much important part in Realstate industry and complexity creates problems at the

front of customers. ERP helps to maintain Just in time in organization. Internship also the best

ways to prepare student in facing the real working life, As a result of the program now I am more

confident to enter the employment world and build my future career.
