Course in Depth

What will I study?

In Year 1 you will acquire a foundation knowledge of theart of the actor and of staging play texts and you willdevelop the practical techniques and skills expected of areflective drama and theatre practitioner. You will alsobegin to develop the skills and language required toexamine, interpret and analyse films, as well asinvestigating the history of cinema, focusing on eitherEuropean or world films.

Year 2 enhances your knowledge and understanding ofkey practitioners and movements in drama in the modernera, engaging you with important ideas about the history,politics and culture of modern drama, while continuing toenhance your practical performance skills and theatricalawareness through production work. There is also a focuson developing and broadening your understanding of filmby examining the nature of film genres. You will have theopportunity to engage in a detailed case study, in additionto exploring the thorny issues surrounding screencensorship.

In Year 3 you will advance your knowledge andunderstanding of contemporary dramatic and theatricalpractice. You will explore contemporary theatreensembles, create your own theatre manifesto, andengage in the making of a drama dissertation project. Anin-depth analysis of film adaptations will enable you toexplore how a range of texts are translated into film,while optional modules immerse you in eithercontemporary European cinema or Americanindependent cinema.

How will I study?

Drama modules are delivered through a combination oflectures, seminars, practical workshop classes,production projects, independent ensemble work andpersonal research. This will equip you with critical andcreative skills which will be of use in a wide range offuture careers. Alongside your study programme, you willengage in careers sessions, prepare practice CVs foremployment, and be supported by dedicated sessions inpersonal development planning.

Tutorials and workshops provide an opportunity to studya wide range of plays and to interrogate ideas in thehistory, theory and practice of drama and theatre.Full-scale production courses provide the opportunity todevelop your practical skills and test your knowledge andunderstanding of live theatre in front of audiences infully-equipped professional theatre spaces.

For Film Studies modules, a combination of lectures,seminars, workshops, presentations and group work aresupplemented by a dynamic programme of screenings,and annual trips to film festivals. As well as multiple filmscreenings that form part of your studies, you also haveaccess to the Short Cuts Cinema at our Studio Theatre,which screens seasons of great films on a big screen.

How will I be assessed?

Drama modules are assessed through a mixture ofpractical and written work including essays, portfolios,seminar presentations, workshop performances,full-scale productions and vivas. You will be required toreflect on your learning in each assessment andsummarise your development regularly.

Assessment for Film Studies modules ranges fromtraditional essays to critical reviews, practical readings offilm extracts under exam conditions, and oralpresentations.

Who will be teaching me?

In Drama, you will be taught by a dedicated team ofacademic specialists and professionally-experiencedpractitioners and benefit from a wide range of learningexperiences. Learning is driven by the principle ofresearch-informed teaching and supported by a team oftechnicians.

The Film Studies modules are taught by dedicated andenthusiastic lecturers and tutors, who are not onlyactively publishing their own work but are alsocontinually revising their modules to ensure theprogramme reflects latest research.

DRA1103: Introducing the Art of the Actor: Text, Voice, Chorus (20 credits)Introducing the Art of the Actor: Text, Voice, Chorus is an introductory practical exploration of the art of the theatreactor in a number of different historical and cultural contexts, ranging from ancient times to the dawn of the modernage of drama. The module provides a creative environment in which your own performance awareness of the art of theactor through theatre history can be developed.

DRA1104: Staging the Play: Text into Action (20 credits)Staging the Play: Text into Action provides a performance laboratory environment in which you will experience thecreation of small-scale practical production projects, transforming play-texts into dramatic action, and culminating inthe presentation of performance texts to an audience. You will explore traditional and innovative approaches torehearsal and theatrical performance, enhance your improvisational, rehearsal and performance techniques, andcollaborate as part of a creative group. Through the practice of making theatre, your theoretical understanding ofdramatic performance will be broadened and changed and your awareness of the processes that turn text into actionwill be developed.

FLM1020: How to Read a Film: Sound and Image (20 credits)How to Read a Film: Sound and Image gives you the language and skills needed to examine, interpret and write aboutfilms, examining a different film in depth each week. The module is full of truly valuable activities, advice and guidancein becoming an efficient reader of film. It will equip you with an analytical vocabulary and knowledge and emphasisethe stylistic aspects of film analysis. Particular attention will be paid to moving image and sound interpretation, theacquisition of a pertinent critical vocabulary, and methods by which cinematic sequences can be analysed.

FLM1024: How to Read a Film: Approaches (20 credits)How to Read a Film: Approaches takes you a step further into critical, analytical and theoretical spheres, examiningfilms in close detail and discovering some of the many significant academic and critical approaches to the cinema. Youwill be introduced to several important critical concepts such as structuralism, post-structuralism, Marxism, feminismand postmodernism.

You will select one of the following modules:

DRA1101: Drama, Theatre and the Idea of the Play: Concepts, Cultures, Contexts (20 credits)Drama, Theatre and the Idea of the Play: Concepts, Cultures, Contexts provides different learning environments inwhich you will begin your essential theoretical and historical study of drama. You will focus broadly upon the rise ofWestern European practices but draw on contextual examples and theoretical perspectives from around the world.The module defines fundamental concepts, examines theoretical perspectives and explores diverse practices in thefield of drama, subjecting each to critical scrutiny. The module addresses, at an introductory level, the challenge ofdramatic theory and its impact on our understanding of practice, seeking preliminary answers to some fundamentalquestions: What is drama? How did it originate and develop? How does it work? What is it for? Why do we need it? Themodule focuses especially on the nature and evolution of dramatic form, confronting the range of dramatic genres andstyles as they appear in both historical and contemporary examples of the dramatic text.

DRA1106: Drama Technique Workshops 1: Basic Practical Skills Development (20 credits)Drama Technique Workshops 1: Basic Practical Skills Development enhances your skills as a reflective practitioner inpractical workshop environments. The module will focus on the foundation development of your acting technique andtheatrical awareness. Integrating practice and theory, the module combines practical exercises with discussion, debateand research based tasks.

You will select one of the following modules:

FLM1022: World Cinemas: Europe (20 credits)World Cinemas: Europe introduces you to a range of European cinemas and looks at specific, significant nationalcinemas and directors that have either helped to establish a national cinema or have played an influential role in theindustry globally. You will examine a range of key texts within their cultural, social, political and historical contexts,learning about significant developments and influences within and across cinema cultures.

FLM1025: World Cinemas: Beyond Europe (20 credits)World Cinemas: Beyond Europe concentrates on cinema outside of Europe. Not only will your knowledge ofinternational cinemas be dramatically broadened, but you will also discover the incredible breadth of styles, narrativesand motivations in the making of world film. In addition to this, you will be introduced to a range of directors that haveeither helped to establish a national cinema or have played an influential role in the global film industry.

Language modules, delivered at the Edge Hill Language Centre, are available to study as an integral part of this degree.A single Language module can be studied instead of one of the optional Drama or Film Studies modules above.

Year 2

DRA2102: Modern Theatre Practitioners: Principles, Practices, Purposes (20 credits)Modern Theatre Practitioners: Principles, Practices, Purposes focuses principally on Western drama to examine therole played by key theatre practitioners in the developmental story of drama in the modern period (from the mid-19thcentury to the mid-20th century). You will explore the ideas, aims, beliefs and strategies of key practitioners andinterrogate the principles, practices and purposes at the heart of their work.

DRA2104: The Making of Modern Theatre: Staging Classic Modern Plays (20 credits)The Making of Modern Theatre: Staging Classic Modern Plays examines approaches to theatre production in themodern era. Focusing on key theatre practitioners in the history of Western modern drama, the module provides theopportunity for you to present work, as part of an ensemble, to an audience where the piece is informed stylisticallyby your study of modern practitioners' ideas about acting, training, directing and the art of theatre production.

FLM2030: Film Genre (20 credits)Film Genre critically examines the functions and forms of film genres in their socio-historical contexts. The modulealso introduces you to genre theory and additional approaches relevant to genre analysis.

FLM2033: Film Genre Case Study (20 credits)Film Genre Case Study enables you to critically engage in a detailed and specifically theorised study of a key Americanfilm genre. It is likely that you will be offered one Hollywood genre from a range of possibilities including, perhaps, themusical, the horror film, or science fiction cinema. Although the precise case study for the module may change withstaffing and with staff interests, the objectives will remain consistent.

FLM2035: Censorship and the Cinema (20 credits)Censorship and the Cinema enables you to learn about and debate the power relationships between industry,audience and censor during such happenings as the imposition of the Production Code in Hollywood during the 1930sand the Video Nasty scare in Britain in the 1980s.

You will select one of the following modules:

DRA2101: The Modern Age of Drama: Forms, Movements, Modernity (20 credits)The Modern Age of Drama: Forms, Movements, Modernity focuses principally on Western drama and examines thedevelopment of the idea of the play in the social and historical context of the modern age (from the mid-19th centuryto the mid-20th century). The module also investigates the position and role of drama within the diverse artisticmovements arising in the period, and interrogates forms, movements and manifestos in order to find out what thedramatists of the modern era stood for, what purposes they believed the art of the modern theatre served, and whatcreative processes they went through in making work that spoke to and about modernity. The aim is tofocus your critical and theoretical engagement on modern ideas about the play as a form, process and purposefulactivity.

DRA2105: Imagining Better Worlds: Theatre, Learning and Development (20 credits)Imagining Better Worlds: Theatre, Learning and Development examines the histories of performance interventionsin local and global contexts and explores critically, using historical and contemporary case studies, the consequencesand meanings of those interventions. There will also be opportunities for observation and practical experience ofgroup creative projects. The module provides an essential introduction to creating performances and facilitatingworkshops in response to the identified needs of a specific community, a particular community grouping. You willexperience and interrogate theatre practice in diverse cultural, social and political contexts as you focus on theatremaking that takes place in a range of settings.

DRA2106: Drama Technique Workshops 2: Advanced Practical Skills Development (20 credits)Drama Technique Workshops 2: Advanced Practical Skills Development enables you to enhance your skills as areflective practitioner in a performance laboratory learning environment. You will focus on the advanced developmentof your acting technique and theatrical awareness in the context of the drama of the modern period. Integratingpractice and theory, the module combines practical exercises with discussion, debate and research based tasks.

DRA2107: The Art and Craft of the Playwright (20 credits)The Art and Craft of the Playwright is a practical and theoretical interrogation of the historical and culturalsignificance of the playwright, in addition to the idea of the play-text. The module provides you with a developed levelof practical knowledge and theoretical understanding of the idea of the play. You will learn about the art of theplaywright, subject that art to close analysis, and put your learning into practice. Investigating the historical andcontemporary role of the writer in the context of live performance, the module will enhance your appreciation of whatthe scripted play does and how its elements function in the theatre, informing your own critical interpretations andsupporting your individual creative attempts to grapple with the making of a play-text.

If you studied a Language module in Year 1, you may wish to study a further Language module in Year 2. This wouldform an integral part of your degree in place of either FLM2035 Censorship and the Cinema or one of the optionalDrama modules above.

DRA3102: The Contemporary Ensemble: Theatre Manifestos (20 credits)The Contemporary Ensemble: Theatre Manifestos examines exemplary theatre companies from the 1960s to thepresent, exploring different ideas and strategies regarding contemporary ensemble practice. The module is designedto be an inspiring examination of the work of some of the key ensembles in the contemporary field of theatre. You willinvestigate the aims, principles and styles of performance of these ensembles and apply this insight to form a creative,imaginative vision of contemporary company practice.

FLM3021: Text to Screen 1 (20 credits)Text to Screen 1 reflects on how a large proportion of films are the results of adaptations of a novel, a short story, agraphic novel, and so forth. The module examines a range of examples, looking at the influences, restrictions andmotivations in the adaptation of stories to the screen.

FLM3025: Text to Screen 2 (20 credits)Text to Screen 2 introduces you to the phenomenon of film adaptation and to the critical discourses necessary forunderstanding that phenomenon. The module familiarises you with a variety of narrative forms (including the novel,the short story, sequential art and the interactive text) and how these are adapted for the cinema. You will alsoconsider external factors that may influence the adaptation process, including the presence of auteur directors, thefranchise and genre considerations.

PAR3104: Dissertation (20 credits)Dissertation provides the opportunity for you to undertake an independent investigation of an identified area ofinterest within relevant fields of current practice. You will identify areas of inquiry according to your own interests andstrengths, and negotiate the parameters for independent study with your appointed supervisor. You will apply yourresearch to the creation of a dissertation, which may take the form of a performance, creative, applied or writtenproject.

You will select one of the following modules:

DRA3101: Researching Contemporary Drama: Theatre and Postmodernity (20 credits)Researching Contemporary Drama: Theatre and Postmodernity advances your specialised knowledge andunderstanding of dramatic theory and dramatic practice, with particular emphasis on developments in the art of thetheatre from the 1960s onwards. The module is an intellectually challenging exploration of the work of some of the keypractitioners and companies in the contemporary field of dramatic theory and practice, tracing some of the paths anddirections that theatre is taking today.

DRA3104: Theatre, Gender and Sexual Politics (20 credits)Theatre, Gender and Sexual Politics explores a range of different types of dramatic text and theatrical experiencelinked to the fundamental themes of gender and sexual politics. The module interrogates themes of gender and sexualpolitics and examines the ways in which playwrights and practitioners have sought to use theatre as a forum tochallenge gender roles and sexual ideology.

DRA3105: Theatre of War: Ideological Conflict and Political Commitment in Drama (20 credits)Theatre of War: Ideological Conflict and Political Commitment in Drama explores a range of different types ofdramatic text and theatrical experience linked by the fundamental theme of war. The module examines ways in whichplaywrights spanning the history of world theatre have sought to dramatise ideological conflict, political commitment,ideas about nation, and responses to colonialism and imperialism. The social, political and ethical roles and

responsibilities of the playwrights who respond to war through the making of play-texts will also be debated.

DRA3107: On the Road: Enabling Better Worlds (20 credits)On the Road: Enabling Better Worlds enables you to experience and interrogate interventionist theatre practice indiverse cultural, social and political contexts. Working individually or as part of a group, you will have the opportunityto plan, create and implement a company-based practical project. This will involve all aspects of conceptualising,forming a sustaining an interventionist theatre company. You will generate an original company profile and devise aclear company purpose and intent. From applying for funding, through to project completion and evaluation, you willdesign and implement placement-based events which explicitly address the needs of an agreed target audience orclient group. Viable creative and administrative structures will also need to be established.

You will select one of the following modules:

MED3234: American Independent Cinema (20 credits)American Independent Cinema focuses on the industrial and economic dimensions of independent film production,distribution and exhibition. The module covers the development and changes in the American independent film sectorfrom the late 1970s, looking at the growth of indie cinema and later Indiewood. In looking at the various dimensions ofindependent finance, production, distribution and exhibition, the module critically explores the very definitions ofindependence and the ways in which it has been conceptualised in relation to film.

MED3235: Contemporary European Cinema (20 credits)Contemporary European Cinema explores the landscape of 21st century cinema in Europe by examining the filmsproduced across the continent. Initially, the module will pose the question of what European cinema might be. You willthen explore the national cinema paradigm in Europe, authorship in Europe, and major pan-European themes andaesthetics. By means of close textual analysis, the module will explore the similarities and contrasts that emergebetween the nations and across the continent as a whole, and conclude with consideration of whether we can say withany certainty that a 'European' cinema exists.

If you studied Language modules in Years 1 and 2, you may wish to study a further Language module in Year 3. Thiswould form an integral part of your degree in place of one of the optional Drama or Film Studies modules above.

Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modulesmay vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means that theavailability of specific optional modules cannot be guaranteed. Optional module selection may also be affected bytimetabling requirements.

Timetables

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while wemake every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

Entry Criteria

Entry Requirements

Typical offer 112-120 UCAS Tariff points, preferably toinclude Drama, Performing Arts or TheatreStudies. Other subjects will be considered if you havedemonstrable interest or experience in drama.

Relevant experience will be taken into account and alloffers are made on the basis of an audition.

Example Offers

Some examples of how you can achieve 112-120 UCASTariff points are detailed below.

• A Level: BBC-BBB;

• BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTECQCF qualifications): Distinction, Merit, Merit(DMM);

• International Baccalaureate (IB): We are happy toaccept IB qualifications which achieve the requirednumber of UCAS Tariff points. Subject-specificrequirements at Higher Level (HL) Grade 5 mayapply;

• Access to Higher Education Diploma: 45 credits atLevel 3, for example 15 credits at Distinction and30 credits at Merit or 24 credits at Distinction and21 credits at Merit. The required total can beattained from various credit combinations.

Please note, the above examples may differ from actualoffers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awardsmay also be accepted.

As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (orequivalent), there is no maximum number ofqualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. Thisincludes additional qualifications such as the WelshBaccalaureate and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ),AS Levels that haven't been continued to A Level, andGeneral Studies AS or A Level awards.

What are my career prospects?

Typical careers for Drama graduates include working inthe theatre/performance industry, working withprofessional companies, teaching (further trainingrequired), media, community or social work, theatreadministration, community arts, and business.Alternatively, you may wish to progress to further studyor research in Drama.

Typical careers for Film Studies graduates includeteaching (further training required), media industries, filmand television industry, IT, journalism, projectmanagement, specialised film schools, advertising andmarketing. Alternatively, you may wish to progress tofurther study or research in Film Studies.

How can I enhance my employability?

It is useful to consider, even before you apply, how youwill spend your time while studying and make the most ofyour university experience.

Optional, additional activities may be available on thisdegree which could help to prepare you for a stimulatingand rewarding career. These include:

• Sandwich Years - you may have the opportunity toapply to complete a sandwich year placement,usually as the third year of a four year degree, andgain highly relevant work experience;

• Erasmus+ and Study Abroad - you may have theopportunity to apply to spend time studying orworking abroad, usually as the third year of a fouryear degree, enabling you to immerse yourself in adifferent culture;

• Learning a Language - you may be able to selectlanguage modules, delivered at the Edge HillLanguage Centre, as an integral part of your degree(for which you will gain academic credits).Alternatively, it may be possible to participate inLanguage Steps classes as additional study.

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree in academic year2020/21, the tuition fee will be £9,250 per annum.Tuition fees for international students enrolling on theprogramme in academic year 2020/21 are £12,250 perannum.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.

Financial Support

Subject to eligibility, UK and EU students joining thisundergraduate degree can apply for a Tuition Fee Loanfrom the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees.UK and EU students enrolling on the programme mayalso be eligible to apply for additional funding to helpwith living costs.
