It’s finally here! Eight years after being proposed and six years in the making, Mumbai Monorail finally made its public debut this month. Being first monorail in the country, Mumbai got its new mode of transport after long wait of 88 years.

In Monorail system, train runs on a narrow guideway beam, wheels of which are gripped laterally on either side of the beam. At its fastest, it will run at 80 kms per hour; the average speed is set at 65 kms per hour.

The newest urban transport features comfortable and uncluttered seating

arrangements, air-conditioned coaches with computer-based interlocking, and automatic fare collection system. There are elevators available at all stations. Escalator facility is expected to become functional within five months.

The Monorail currently operates on a nearly nine-kilometer path that runs north from Wadala to Chembur, two eastern suburbs, which has seven stations. Initially, the swanky Monorail with a passenger carrying capacity of 560 each vehicle, will run from 7 in the morning till 3 in the afternoon in a 15 minutes interval. The Mumbai

Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) who owns Monorail will operate six trains in the first phase and another 10 will be added in the second. The project has been executed by a consortium of engineering major L&T and Scomi Group of Malaysia.

The second phase of Monorail is expected to complete by next year and is projected to carry an average of 7,400 passengers per hour, for a total of 125,000 commuters daily.

The project has long been claimed by the MMRDA as a high-tech solution to the city’s unmanageable traffic congestion. But there are debates that the newly opened transit system will do much to relieve the traffic problems. Is it really serving any purpose to the harried commuters of Mumbai?

On one side the Monorail fever has already gripped Mumbai but on the

other side it has raised few doubts. After its overwhelming inauguration the question arises how useful is phase one? Here we discussed some advantages and disadvantages Monorail shares.

AdvantagesFaster connectivity: The monorail has been designed to reduce the travel time between Wadala and Chembur by almost half, from 40 minutes at present to nearly 21 minutes.

Environment friendly: Monorail follows the lines of green transportation as its coaches move on rubber tyres on concrete beams, creating less noise and vibration during operation.

Safe and reliable: As monorails run around elevated tracks, there is absolutely no risk of cars getting stuck on crossings. Also, the doors of coaches will not open when the monorail is in motion. Adequate safety features have been incorporated to avoid mishaps from driver’s mistakes.

Also, reduced space between the coaches and platform

will diminish gap-related accidents.

DrawbacksRoutes pass unfrequented areas: Most of the Monorail stations do not have proper connectivity to other modes of transport. Stations like Wadala, Bhakti Park and Mysore Colony are on isolated spots where there is little chance of finding any other modes of transport.

Low passenger capacity: The declared capacity is just 560 passengers per train. The plan is to have 15 trains of four trains each, which will carry around 1.25 lakh people every day. In comparison, the Mumbai suburban railway carries 72.4 lakh commuters daily, while the Mumbai Metro One is expected to carry six lakh commuters per day on completion.

Economy: Being built at a cost of about ` 3,000 crore, the monorail cannot recover the CAPEX and OPEX from ticket sales alone with a ticket price of ` 5 - 11. Though today thousands of people are queuing up for joyride, it should not become a ‘white elephant’ in future.

Road aheadMMRDA is hurrying to complete the phase two of the project. When the entire monorail project is completed,

the total project cost is estimated to reach ` 3,000 crore. It

will be 20-km long

Escorts offers the comprehensive range of vibratory compactors in India. In soil compaction category, there are three models to choose from, depending upon the application. Road compaction in India has moved from desired compaction to minimum acceptable and consistent compaction. Rajinder Raina shares the USPs of Escorts machines.

Most innovative road building equipment As road projects got awarded by NHAI in particular, competition increased and international processes and practices started getting adopted. This led to the demand for vibratory compactors with application oriented, specific deliverables.

The next stage of evolution in compactor technology came from penalty and incentive/bonus clauses in the tenders. The customers started preferring/paying premium for high-productivity, low operations cost, reliability and matching after-sales support.

Escorts offers two variants in soil compactors EC5250 and EC2420. The company has recently launched a new vibratory soil compactor EC6650 to fill the slot between the two models.

USP of the machineEC6650 is an 11-tonne machine with an option to supply customised 11.7-tonne machine. 80 per cent of the machine can be serviced from the ground level. The visibility from operator seat is 1 x 1. It offers high operator comfort for minimum fatigue. All controls are on dashboard. Contemporary looks are among the USPs of the machine.

Advantages of EC6650These machines find preference in long stretches of road compaction and sites where high reliability is a must. For consistent output conforming to the required norms of compaction, machine specifications need to be of a particular calibre but equally important is the machine operator who makes the machine to deliver what it is designed for and capable of. EC6650 has been modelled for ease of operation and operation comfort for the best operator-machine integration. “Technology to performance to operator” is how prioritisation took place on the product development.

Criteria for buying of production machinesOwning and operating (O&O) cost

has always been a major criterion for buying of capital equipment/production machines. With the cost of fuel going up, defined timelines — including penalties and bonuses — have redefined the matrix of operating costs. It is now measured in terms of cost incurred per unit output delivered. The fuel consumption needs to be linked to the output of the machine rather than per hour basis.

Availability of after-sales services and spare partsEscorts pioneered the concept of vibratory compactors in India and was the first company to have dealership network. Besides having a wide dealership network, new dealerships are being added to address newer market places for proximity to the work/project sites. Notably, North East where new dealerships have been added in the past couple of years. After-sales support remains one of the major strengths of Escorts. n

Split Tiles best remedy to stop roof leakage

Why do concrete slabs leak?Due to increased heat in day time, concrete slabs expand. And fall in temperature at night lead to contraction of concrete slab. This expansion and contraction of the concrete cause minute cracks initially on the ordinary cement roof slab. This is due to the brittle nature of cement concrete as the cement portion of it does not have the provision to expand or contract. Once the crack widens, water get inside the RCC slab and start wetting the inner surface which lead to the failing of water in droplets. Then the iron bars start corroding causing increase in volume and consequently enlargement of crack cause more leakage of roof. If not checked in time the strength of the building gets deteriorated considerably. Split Tiles are an excellent remedy to prevent such leakage.

Split TilesSplit Tiles are manufactured using the most advanced technology. After the selection of various types of clay they are proportionately mixed using mixer, crusher and fine grinded before extrusion through polisher. Clay is kept for ageing before final extraction through de-airing machine. De-Airing is the latest method in terracotta wherein entire air from the clay molecules is drawn out using high-power vacuum pumps. This process renders more compatibility strength and fine finish to the tiles.

Raja Brick & Tile Industries offers two sizes of tile in this category: 10” x 5” and 9” x 9”.

Laying of Split TilesThe method of laying the Split Tiles over the concrete slab is quiet simple. Some sand, cement and waterproofing compounds are needed.

The area has to be prepared by pouring cement grout on the slab surface and placing the split tiles over the grout, after splitting the tiles in to two parts. This can be achieved by hitting the side of the tile with a masonry trowel. Then the tiles to be laid at a gap of 3-4 mm between the tiles with adequate slope for water to drain and tiles are to be inserted into the parapet wall.

After one or two days of curing make sure that the tiles are holding on to the grout that has been laid underneath. Now the gaps between the tiles are filled with wet mix of cement, sand and waterproofing compound. After a normal curing the slab becomes waterproof. n

PRODUCT LaUnChConcrete Pump

Liebherr unveils truck- mounted concrete pump 37 R4 XXT

Liebherr has launched new truck-mounted concrete pump 37 R4 XXT at the World of Concrete event in Las Vegas, USA. Comprising a pump type THP 140 H, this equipment also features a Liebherr-patented XXT-narrow outrigger.

The four-section, roll-fold distributor boom has a reach of 37 metres and is extremely torsional-resistant. This ensures reduced vibrations when

manoeuvring the boom during onsite applications. Well-balanced weight distribution is achieved by channelling the concrete line extremely close to the boom on both left and right-hand sides. Pressure loss is reduced over the entire length of the distributor boom due to the generous 275-mm radius of the pipe bends. Moreover, the pipe bends are predominantly of the same type, minimising the need to stock diverse replacement parts. Numerous design-

related features optimise servicing tasks by simplifying the replacement of wear parts.

Liebherr is sole market provider of the exceptionally sturdy and low-torsion patented XXT-narrow outrigger. The front and rear support arms are secured directly to the pedestal of the distributor boom, through which the forces are channelled directly into the supports, completely bypassing the boom. All four support arms are pivot-mounted to allow maximum flexibility and a particularly extensive working range of the distributor boom with narrow sup-port configurations. This feature is invaluable on construction sites with restricted access.

The truck-mounted concrete pump 37 R4 XXT can be equipped with high-performance pump units featuring three different outputs ranging from 125-163 cubic metres/hour, depending on the respective application.

Chassis from various manufacturers can be used for the truck-mounted concrete pump in accordance with customer requirements.

A wide range of optional accessories and equipment are available for the 37 R4 XXT. It is, therefore, possible for the customer to specify additional storage compartments, an extra diesel tank or a further access point on the left-hand side for example. A magnetic rotating beacon provides added safety and a pneumatic end hose pinch valve prevents any concrete spillage when repositioning the boom.

These rugged, durable concrete pumps from Liebherr are developed and produced in Germany, and feature exclusively high-quality components from renowned manufacturers. n

Maco aims to be the best source for powered access platformsMaco Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd. offers wide range of access equipment in India. In an interview with B2B Purchase, Ketan Patel talks on the industry trends and his strategies.

Could you brief us on the Maco’s expertise in access equipment sector? Maco began selling Genie range of access equipment in India from 2004 and made it the biggest brand in the end user segment. Since then, we have sold more than 700 equipment and still going strong. It is the aggressive marketing strategy, hard-work by the team and uncompromising customer service we render to our customers that makes it the most preferred choice when it comes to select access platform or MEWP for a job.

We also provide various solutions as and when required to our customers by offering them spider platforms, easily installable and portable powered ladders etc. What are the access equipment and solutions you offer? We primarily offer the Genie brand of machines and also Platform Basket,

S.r.l., Italy range of spider lifts wherever a Genie machine cannot suffice the purpose. As regards to solutions, we offer new, used, rentals, AMC’s - basically almost everything under one roof.

In Genie, we have the aerial work platform (AC- and DC-powered), scissor lifts (battery and diesel), articulating boom lifts (battery and diesel),

“We see our company as one of the leaders in access equipment industry having one stop solutions be it new, used or on rent,” says Ketan Patel, Director, Maco Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd.

telescopic boom lifts, trailer-mounted booms, telehandlers and lighting towers.

We have Genie machines that can carry single person upto the height of 14 metres (AWP). We also have machines that can carry two or more people from 6 metres to the height of 56.69 metres. This is the highest boom in the world.

We have Genie scissor lifts which can carry upto 1.1 tonne of load. These scissor lifts have been acknowledged as the best in the industry. In the Platforms

Basket, Italy range we have spider platforms which can go upto the height of 30 metres.

Could you enlighten us on your most advanced technologies in access equipment sector? Technological advancement in the access equipment sector has come as more safety to the operator and Genie as always has come up with the most awarded solution.

Firstly, Genie’s recent innovation has been the OPS Guard (Operators Protective Structure) which is patented and proven to be the best. Genie has won three LLEAP gold awards for Genie ZX-135 articulating boom, Genie OPS and Genie GTH-1544 telehandler.

Secondly, the X Chassis which allows the biggest booms to be transported in the normal trailers allowing huge saving

to rentals companies and machines owners on account of logistics and manoeuvring at site

How do you see the acceptance of such technologies in Indian market? This is an acknowledged concept in the Indian market, however due to insufficient legislation their visibility is reduced to projects where MNCs or reputed construction companies are involved. But we expect to see a change in the scenario soon as there are companies like ours are working hard to bring in such norms.

More than 700 machines which we have sold are to the companies across industries like shipbuilding, hotels, automation, railways, aviation, power generation and distribution.

How does the access equipment industry view the ongoing slowdown and delays in infra projects? Access equipment remains a capital purchase. However the presence of rental companies is offering the customers an alternative and cheaper option. This allows the companies into infra projects to rent rather than make large investment in purchase. The slowdown has surely its effects but this is a changing phase and is bound to improve in the coming months.

How the market is going to be evolved in the coming years? The markets across the world for access equipment have been predominantly a rental sector product. In India too we see more companies coming into the rental of access platforms.

Today anybody with a machine can rent at whatever rate he wants where machine quality is not monitored and there is no evaluation of the operator’s capabilities. In future, we hope to see the market only for organised companies who will rent out quality machines with trained operators within a transparent business environment. In current scenario, what is the most preferred option for a customer amongst buying and renting? For manufacturing companies or a company with a 24 x 7 maintenance team, buying is the best option as they will own the machine and can use the same as and when required. Also, they will be assured of the health of the machine or compliance with the company policies.

For an infrastructure company, PEB project developer, EPC contractor or any company into execution of projects, rental is the best option as their business depends on getting contracts. Buying a machine and keeping it idle in the yard till they get a contract may not be feasible. Further they do not have to employ trained manpower to maintain the machine/s or invest into inventory of spares and consumables etc.

Where do you see Maco in the next 5 years — product wise and business wise?We see our company as one of the leaders in access equipment industry having one stop solutions be it new, used or on rent. n

PROFILEConcrete Pump

Ready-to-use foam concrete plant for multiple applications

Sai-Ansh Engineers Pvt. Ltd. (SAEPL) has developed a foam concrete plant with integrated system of foam generator and pump. With SAEPL’s medium-sized plant, the foam concrete can be pumped to a height of 20 metres and horizontally to a length of 150 metres; with this layout foam concrete walls can be easily cast. Foam concrete can also be laid on terrace and other floors to get benefit of thermal and acoustic insulation with all the other benefits of foam concrete.

Foam concrete could also be used to make lower density sandwich panels by pumping. It has great thermal and acoustic insulation properties.

The specialty of SAEPL plant is that the density of foam concrete can be adjusted online, so that the concrete can be pumped and laid as per requirement at particular locations.

SAEPL can provide the complete plant on the lines of a fully automatic concrete batching plant. In case of

an automatic batching system, the conveyor is replaced by a batching hopper and bins. The plant is a ready-to-use with just the mains to be connected in the control panel after proper levelling of the equipment and barrels for foaming agent and water to be provided. The plant consists of three sections: mixer, foam generator and pumping.

In the mixer section cement sand, flyash and water are charged as per the mix design established for the required density. Bags of cement, sand, and flyash are to be kept ready duly weighed as per the mix design, so that there is no or very little time lag between the time the batch is consumed and mixer is refilled. The level in the mixer has to be always maintained at one-third of the capacity.

In the foam generator section, the

inlet pipe with a strainer provided with the plant has to be put in the barrel containing diluted foaming agent. This diluted liquid is automatically pumped into the system and with compressed air the foam is generated. The test foam can be taken from the bye pass line provided and ensured that it has the required parameters before it is changed to supply in the system.

In the pumping section, the cement slurry is sucked and discharged into a chamber where the foam generated is also pumped into the chamber. Then

the foam is injected into cement slurry while it passes through the chamber and at the other end of the chamber we get foam concrete ready. Discharge pipe is connected at the end of the chamber and the discharged foam concrete can be poured in the moulds or site as required.

The density of the foam concrete can be adjusted simply by using a knob in the control panel. n

“Good Machines are the heart of our business. I don't believe in compromising. Opportunities don't come often, that is when I met Volvo CE. And that was just the beginning.” - JK Mahanta

The Eastern India has an untouched mesmerizing beauty of its own. The rocky and tea garden grazed paths of Eastern Assam did not have such good roads until a few years back when someone took the initiative to construct them. Since then there has been no turning back.

“There were not many good roads in Assam. As a student we were leaders and headed many movements. As time passed by we wanted to do something worth for the state. And here I am all these years later from a Student leader to a successful Businessman”, says Mahanta.

Five years back when the Company was in its initial stages, Mahanta took his leap of faith and decided to venture into Volvo CE for his business needs. “It is very important to use the best of machines in the road construction business as they play a key role. And to be honest, I doubt if there is any other option that could be better than Volvo”, he smiles. Mahanta says that the strong and long lasting machines with its fuel efficiency and robustness stands out

It was in no time that Volvo CE flew two of their engineers to the interiors in Assam and they had the machine working within 8 hours. “These Volvo CE machines are self sufficient and in all these years I never had a chance to complain”, he says with a gleaming smile.

Since the time they started using Volvo equipments, the production shot up and the fuel efficiency also helped in cutting costs. It is the perfect investment in this line of business.

Looking at the machines working in front of him, Mahanta says, “When

Susumo offers new range of tunneling machines

Susumo Engineering has launched a new range of machines for tunneling jobs. It consists of the whole range from simple tractor trolley loading bucket to mucking machines.

Mucking MachineIt consists of an excavating arm and a conveyor. The arm scrapes the muck on the conveyor. The conveyor carries the muck to a height of 2.25 metres. Dumpers have to reverse and stand under the conveyor to collect the falling muck. The whole machine is self-propelled. All four wheels have independent power and all of them can be steered. This helps in taking gradients, uneven terrains and turning in small spaces.

Tunnel ExcavatorsThis is an excavator mounted on tyres. The excavating arm is specially designed. It has a long reach and can turn 360 degrees in very small micro-tunnels also. All its wheels are hydraulically driven hence it can take gradients. Being on tyres it travels faster than track-mounted excavators. It can pick-up muck from the front, turn 180 degrees and unload it on trolleys or

dumpers etc. This is being considered as an ideal machine for small tunnels and mines.

Trolley Loading Bucket The entry level machine is a bucket which loads tractor trolleys. The muck has to be scrapped on the bucket manually. When it reaches a maximum

capacity of 500-kg, the bucket is raised hydraulically. The whole load of muck is thus transported directly to the centre of the tractor trolley. This machine is self-propelled and works on single phase electric supply. It mainly eliminates the lifting of muck by labour. It involves the least of hydraulics and is hence easy to operate and maintain.

Site-TrucksThese are very low height machines which can carry muck and pour it outside the tunnels. These also hydraulically-powered 4-wheel drive machines. These can also be used to carry concrete. n

EJOT Fasteners making nuclear reactor safe

On 26th April 1986, almost 26 years ago, the worst case scenario happened in the number 4 reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Ever since then a provisional sarcophagus has been securing the reactor. But the porous construction leaks water and dust can escape. It has been predicted to hold up for 20 to 30 years. The current stabilising construction work will protect the rusty protective cover from crumbling until around 2023. The new protective cover securely confines the remains for the next 100 years. It will be equipped with screws from EJOT.

In India, EJOT is a joint venture between EJOT Gmbh and Lakshmi Precision Screws.

New shield with EJOT self-drilling screwsThe new shield in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is the largest movable structure ever built. In April the building work of the new sarcophagus began and the planned end date is summer 2015. The destroyed reactor will then be securely encased for at least 100 years. Construction directly over the old sarcophagus is not possible due to the high radiation on site. For that reason the shield is being built on nearby premises and will be pushed over the existing sarcophagus.

Quality and deliverableDuring the selection of possible suppliers EJOT was able to convince in two aspects. The company was able to answer

comprehensive technical questions in detail and EJOT also guarantees complete quality service. This means that all production and process steps are continuously monitored, starting with an incoming goods inspection of the

PROFILEVentilators

Golden Turbovent combines natural and forced air ventilation system

Golden Turbovent is a unique and economical solution for all ventilation problems. This is a globally accepted technology. A combination of both natural and forced air ventilation system, it is a free spinning roof ventilator which works on free wind energy and functions as a natural ventilator when there is a difference in thermal or wind pressure between inside and outside the building which forces the air to move through the opening of the ventilator. The turbovent also acts as a forced ventilation system when it rotates to create a negative pressure within the building. The cold air from outside enters the negative space within the building to maintain an equilibrium condition.

The product helps in reducing the maintenance cost due to: • Heat trapped in ceiling space can

cause electrical wiring to dry and crack• Rising damp in winter may cause cracks

in plaster and damage paint work• Metal fitting on roof can corrode• Trapped moisture causes mildew

on ceiling and moulds on roofing tiles.

Features • No operating cost as it works on free

wind energy• Dual benefit of natural ventilation and

daylight• Free-spinning ventilator provides

fresh air in the roof space and living area at zero operating cost

• Light weight, strong and durable construction for resistance against extreme climatic conditions

• Maintenance free • Rigid Spider type frame construction

to withstand cyclone, storm and twisters

• Easy and quick installation on any roof profile

• Aerofoil blades to prevent water and dust ingress

• Dynamically balanced for frictionless rotation also at lowest wind velocity

• FRP Venturi Dome used with Turbovent provides natural light during day time, thus reduces lighting load

• Continuous positive extraction of the Turbovent eliminates heat, dust, fume penetration and a down-draught into the building to ensure a cleaner and healthier working environment.

ApplicationAutomobile industry, food industry,

Secure Access EverywhereEstablished in 1993, Cleanindia Group of Companies pioneers in façade access equipment manufacturing, supplying and maintenance. In an exclusive interaction with B2B Purchase, Ashok Khemlani talks about the market status, prevailing challenges and his company’s contributions.

Maintenance of facades for high-rise buildings is always a challenge. Could you brief us on the challenges faced in the maintenance of facades for such buildings? For working at height, the use of mechanised equipment in construction industry is in nascent stage. Firstly, the introduction of the products to access the façade was a problem. However the knowledge and also the use of systems are increasing very rapidly.

Secondly, India has rapidly moved away from developing straight line buildings to various types of shapes and slopes. Architects and developers are today constructing state-of-the-art buildings and there is no gap in façade designs in India and abroad.

Also due to economic slowdown in many parts of the world, coupled with initiative from Indian builders and corporate, many architects from different parts of the world are practicing in India. I dare to say that today as the facades go our Indian

Machine on top and cradle that has gone deep inside the building at Capital building, BKC

architecture is ahead of rest of the world.

In today’s architecture access systems pose challenges. No doubt the solutions are always found. The problem remains in over simplification or an overkill. However, architects and corporate are becoming more knowledgeable on the subject.

Thirdly, in India, the practices that are highly unsafe are still being followed on high-rise buildings. Majority of the building facades are being accessed with bamboo scaffolding which is unheard of elsewhere in the world. Nearly all countries use safely assembled steel scaffolds or temporary access systems. Every year there are many deaths all over the country because of unsafe practices. Most of them go un-noticed in the country by media.

Lack of health and safety standards is one of biggest challenges in this country. The government do not specify

anything on the health and safety for working at height. The municipal authorities come and check the area, FSI etc. -They do not look at health and safety aspects at construction sites. The problem is - our culture does not permit to be careful.

There is another challenge that is ‘I can also do’ since there is no control. Many people get into enterprise saying ‘I can also do’ without understanding the hazards of it. Result is sub-standard products not meeting the minimum quality that is required for safe operations.

Due to opening up of economy, many global suppliers are in to the Indian market. But due to lack of any control on import quality, many a time the products we are getting are of poor quality. In case of façade cleaning, we are putting life of the people working outside the building in the open sky in danger and have no control.

So, considering the safety of working

at height especially in the air outside the building there is need for better specification, better control on imports and better standards on allowing the companies to sale their products in India.

What sort of competencies you have developed to give better services despite all these challenges? We have three companies. Cradle Runways is an engineering company involved in manufacturing of access equipment for all kinds of facades and installing it. Initially, we started by importing as a distributor. But realising the difficulties in importing and providing end-to-end services, we started manufacturing locally with technological tie-up with U.K.-based Cradle Runways International. In last two decades, we have developed efficient and cost-effective products which are most suitable for Indian market.

We also provide service for cleaning the building. Technoclean (I) Pvt. Ltd.

INDUSTRY SPEAKSFacade

(TIL) is India’s first company in the field of façade cleaning and maintenance services. We have pioneered ‘Spiderman’ (abseiling technique) in India. We are servicing over 300 clients in 17 cities across India and cleaning over a crore square feet a month.

In addition, we have rental equipment for going from ground to up. TSP Access Rentals is India’s largest access rental company offering construction platforms and other access equipment to the building, glazing and painting industries in most cities in India.

Do you have any training centre for operators training? We have a training centre along with our factory in Khopoli, Maharashtra. Today we have more than 50 trained operators in market who have been certified and are practicing.

We are practicing safety very extensively. We don’t permit our workmen who are working on the height for cleaning to work beyond 8 hours to avoid accident due to tiredness. We clock the rope and access equipment. We feel manufacturing a

machine, giving it to people and then not bothering about its functioning and safety is wrong.

What sort of safety features you expect in access equipment? The equipment should be such that it should have more reasons to stop than work. The equipment should be tamper proof because the operators have a tendency to do short cut. Equipment like cradle should have tamper proof features include limit switch and over load device.

Practice and safety comes with certain cost, so is the market ready to welcome such costs?I am sure that they are ready to pay for safety. Today people are willing to pay a clear cut outline difference for safer equipment. But, there are some people who go for cheaper equipment those may be quite unsafe. There should be better methodology in procuring equipment. We all need to remember that the safety is not the only criteria, it’s the sum total. The people will always pay for the safety.

Should the developers and architects consult with façade maintenance

players during conceptualising any project? It is absolutely necessary. There are developers and architects who send us their preliminary rough sketches to check feasibility for maintenance. They have to provide techno economically viable project to the client.

Developers who are constructing iconic buildings they have to remember that such buildings will sustain if the façade is accessed and kept cleaned.

For example, ILFS, an iconic building done by Architect Hafeez Contractor, is a piece of architectural excellence. Obviously they have to look at its maintenance. They have an ideal system to reach the various areas of façade.

We have provided state-of-the-art, ideally suited, safe systems to suit the requirements of international airports in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai.

Today, we are proud to say that let the architect imagine and provide his expressions in the design of the building - we will provide a system to reach each and every square foot of the building. n

Radiant heat barriers for thermal comfort

Energy efficiency in construction is important to everyone i.e. builders, owners and prospective users of public, commercial and residential accommodation. This combined with the fact that the number one challenge in the tropical climates in countries like India is to control heat gain, should make radiant heat barriers an integral part of building design to improve the overall comfort level in a building and reducing energy bills. ASHRAE Standard 55 defines Thermal Comfort as: ‘Thermal comfort is that condition of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment.’

From the definition of thermal comfort it is clear that it refers to state of mind that finds the surrounding environment satisfactory. The environmental factors that impact the feeling of human satisfaction are air flow or wind, air temperature, humidity and radiations from Sun or surrounding hot surfaces. Personal factors like clothing, adaptation to environment and activity level also have a bearing on the perception of comfort. People accustomed to hot climates are comfortable at higher temperatures as compared to people from cooler climates. Similarly, people feel perfectly comfortable in winter dress during winter and summer dress during summer in Air-conditioned Buildings although there is no seasonal change in the indoor environmental conditions.

In hotter climates like Indian summers, body must shed heat through sweat evaporation is natural way to maintain the thermal equilibrium. The

cooling efficiency is dependent on humidity that reduces the effectiveness of evaporative cooling. Humidity is the reason that renders July/August more uncomfortable as compared to May/Jun in spite of temperatures being higher prior to the onset of rainy season. During winters, body must prevent / reduce heat loss by having additional protective warm clothing, moving into a shelter to avoid wind chill or increase body heat production with increased physical activity. During winters, evaporation and humidity are minor factors while exposed body parts and wind chill are major factors for maintaining thermal balance as far as human comfort is concerned.

Radiation plays the most important role in creating conditions conducive to thermal comfort / thermal stress.

Radiation during winters may be soothing as everyone who has enjoyed the winter Sun knows, but the same solar radiation can lead to excessive heat load on the person during summers with attendant uncomforting experience and heat stress.

In order to understand the perception of thermal comfort by human body, we need to know the process of heat exchange between body and surrounding environment. A seated human body produces and dissipates about 100 W of heat energy into the surrounding environment and the energy produced would increase beyond 500 W for a person engaged in cardio-vascular exercises in a Gymnasium. If this transfer of heat for a seated person doesn’t lead to extra physical effort like sweating or shivering

to maintain the body temperature, environment is considered to be comfortable.

As per ASHRAE Fundamentals Handbook: ‘Skin temperature greater than 45 C or less than 18 C causes pain. Skin temperatures associated with comfort at sedentary activities are 33 to 34 C and decrease with increasing activity. In contrast, internal temperatures rise with activity. The temperature regulatory centre in the brain is about 36.8 C at rest in comfort and increases to about 37.4 C when walking and 37.9 C when jogging.’

Metabolic activity inside the body produces energy that is used

for muscular work or transferred to surrounding environment through respiration and skin. The heat energy exchanged by skin to environment comprises convective heat transfer to/from the surrounding air, evaporative heat transfer through sweat evaporation and radiation to/ from skin to surrounding environment. If the surrounding surfaces like walls/floor/ceiling have temperatures higher than the body temperature, the radiation exchange would result in net heat gain. If the heat produced by metabolic activity exceeds the heat consumed in muscular work and lost/gained during exchange with surrounding environment, the same would lead to increase of body temperature. This change of

body temperature is sensed by the hypothalamus in human brain, the god given thermostat to control body temperature. The body temperature is regulated by increasing blood supply to skin to increase heat loss or reduce blood supply and conserve heat loss through skin. If skin temperature gets lower than desired due to excessive heat loss, the hypothalamus triggers shivering and localised heat generation. If the internal temperature increases beyond a certain point, the hypothalamus triggers sweat generation to cool the body through evaporative cooling. We are quite good at sensing the skin moisture / perspiration with the associated feelings of unpleasantness and discomfort especially if involved in sedentary work.

Asymmetric or non-uniform thermal radiations in a building from cold windows in winter or hot ceiling during summers can lead to occupants feeling uncomfortable. As per ASHRAE Fundamentals Handbook: ‘People are more sensitive to asymmetry caused by an overhead warm surface than by a vertical cold surface. The influence of an overhead cold surface and a vertical warm surface is much less.’

Based on various field studies, Nicol has come up with an empirical equation to compute Comfortable Temperature. The Comfort Temperature (T comfort)is calculated from the monthly mean outside temperature (To mean) which is derived from the monthly mean of daily maximum (To max) and minimum (To min) from meteorological records. The comfort temperature is calculated using the equation

Tcomfort = 0.54xTo mean + 12.9

From the weather data from the meteorological records for Delhi as shown in the table, To comfortable for Delhi has been computed.

The same information is depicted graphically for ease of comprehension. Its clear from the graph the To comfort varies from low comfortable temperature 21 C in DEC JAN to a high comfortable temperature of 30 C during Jun Jul.

In almost all types of construction, roof has the maximum exposure to solar radiation and contributes the most towards heat gain due to large surface area getting exposed to the sun leading to extreme temperatures of roof surfaces. Roof temperatures reach upwards of 65 C leading to uncomfortable inside environment in unconditioned buildings. At peak times, more than 40 per cent of the energy that enters the conditioned airspace through the ceiling is the direct result of radiant energy being transferred from the deck to the top of the false ceiling. Radiant Heat Barriers like Double sided Aluminium Foil like Flamestop 138, are the most economical, efficient and long lasting

solution for minimizing heat gain from the roofs.

It is important to understand the simplicity of principle on which the radiant barriers work and their application in construction. Heat always travels from hot surface to cold surface by the three methods of heat transfer i.e. radiation, convection and conduction. The principle on which the radiant barrier functions is the same as that of Thermos Flask i.e. preventing heat transfer through radiation. Thermos Flask takes care of the other two means of heat transfer i.e. convection and conduction by having vacuum in between the two reflective surfaces. However, one doesn’t have to conduct an experiment with two thermos flasks, one without reflective insulation and another with reflective insulation to find out that convection and conduction play a minor role in heat transfer.

During hot summer days, the roof of a building absorbs solar radiation and then the heat is dissipated outside into the atmosphere through all the three means of heat transfer i.e. through conduction, convection and radiation and a significant portion to the inner roof surface through conduction resulting in increased inner roof surface temperature. The roof temperature keeps on increasing after Sunrise as the amount of heat energy gained is more than heat energy lost through radiation,

convection and conduction. The solar heat gained keeps on increasing with the increase in sun angle till a balance/equilibrium is reached with roof temperature reaching maxima for the day sometime in the afternoon with heat energy gained being equal to the heat energy lost. Subsequently, with the Sun going down sun angle reducing, the heat loss becomes more than the heat gain leading to reduction of roof temperature and the process continues till the next day morning till a minima is reached sometime after Sunrise.

As much as 93 per cent of the total heat gain from the roof is through radiation with conduction contributing the remaining heat transfer through roof and convection playing no role as a convective loop is not possible for heat gain through the roof. A properly installed radiant barrier under roof will stop as much as 97 per cent of radiant heat by reflecting 95 per cent of the incident radiations while transmitting just 5 per cent of the 5 per cent absorbed heat energy. On the other hand, mass/bulk insulation acts as a barrier for heat transfer by convection and can only slow down the process of heat transfer through conduction.

Roofing materials (RCC slabs or ACC/metal roofs) are often poor reflectors and good emitters of heat. The traditional roofing materials absorb as much as 90 per cent of the incoming solar

energy resulting in roof temperatures rising to levels as high as 65 C to 70 C during summers. The hot roofs start transferring the absorbed heat to the cooler surfaces inside the building through conduction, and radiation with radiation being responsible for more than 90 per cent of the heat gain. The inner surface of the heated up ceiling transfers the absorbed solar heat to all objects inside. The radiant surface temperatures of the walls and ceilings have a direct influence on the comfort level of the occupants and increased energy costs in conditioned buildings. Most energy conservation consultants recognize effectiveness of radiant barriers, in controlling heat flow from roof to the building’s interior.

A polished film of aluminium is the primary component of a radiant barrier system. Compared to ACC/Metal/RCC roofs with high emittance value 0.7 to 0.9, aluminium radiant barrier emits only 3 per cent to 5 per cent energy as heat radiant energy from its surface

when compared to non reflective ceiling surfaces. Thus, radiant barriers can effectively block 95 per cent to 97 per cent of radiant heat transfer from roof to inside.

There are several ways to install radiant barrier under the roof. It can be laid over the purlin in case of new buildings or under the purlin in existing buildings with ACC/metal sheet roofs. In case of RCC slab roofs, the process is similar to installation gypsum boards and it is attached with the help channels with an air cavity in between RCC slab and radiant barrier. A properly installed radiant barrier under the roof is the best performing application and gives the best results with radiant barrier surface temperature getting reduced to just about 2 deg C above the ambient outside air temperature and relief from thermal stress associated with high ceiling temperatures.

During a typical summer afternoon in the Sunbelt, a properly installed

under roof radiant barrier system will: • Reduce room temperatures by as

much as 6 C to 8 C in unconditioned buildings.

• Increase thehuman thermalcomfortlevel for the occupants of the building.

• Extendthelifeoftheair-conditioningunit.

In today’s market, with rising energy costs and increased consumer awareness in all areas of industry, it is important to market a product that is not only smart economics for the builder but also for the consumer. The builders that have adapted radiant barriers in their programs are clearly setting the benchmark in the industry for energy efficient and environment friendly green buildings with competitive advantage. n

INDUSTRY SPEAKSInsulation

Fiberglass insulation: safe to useU.P. Twiga Fiberglass Ltd. has been in the business production and marketing of glass wool. Twiga manufactures fiberglass insulation products under technological license from Saint Gobain Isover, France. In an interaction with B2B Purchase, Biswajit Roy talks on the insulation products and technologies.

U.P. Twiga is a leading manufacturer of glass wool insulation in India having 25 years of track record. What is your outlook on the thermal and acoustic insulation market in India?Indian insulation market is set to grow as there are increasing awareness among various stakeholders like government authorities, architects, specifiers, builders and contractors. As India is looking forward to the reduction of energy intensity of GDP, we have no other option but to adopt high performing insulation solutions in industry and building sector. Ministry of Power and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy are working separately to implement energy efficiency programs like star labelling of appliances, glass (facade) and adoption of GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) rating in all upcoming building projects under central government. Not only this, in various places because of less availability of water for constructions, builders are slowly shifting towards dry constructions. Dry construction technology promotes high level of thermal and acoustic insulation. This in turn achieves significant reduction of heat load and good acoustic privacy. There are atleast 13 identifiable segments for insulation in India and different segments need different specifications to comply. Hence high standard of manufacturing technology is required for better flexibility in the products.

How to select insulation material and on what basis a decision is made? Design of insulation system is based on the following parameters such as:• Energy efficiency parameter. For

example, thermal transmittance for building envelope (roof and wall) and thermal resistance for ducts

• Acoustic parameters. For example, sound transmission class of system and acoustic absorption value of the product

• Fire safe parameters such as noncombustibility, least surface spread of flame, fire propagation indices, non toxic/smoke emission etc.

• Environmental parameters likerecycled content, life-cycle cost,

regional raw material acquisition, and least volatile organic compound.

• Application complexity such asinstallation, handling, product form and dimensions.

• Economyandon-timeavailability.

Decision on material is taken considering most or all of these design parameters at design or planning stage. However it also depends on the project dynamics at the execution stage.

Could you brief us on the advantages of glasswool insulation?Fiberglass wool insulation products are made of high-quality inorganic and non-combustible glass fibre in various forms such as blanket or boards, mostly laminated with high-performing facings. In the process of manufacturing the complete raw material is converted to 100 per cent pure fibre and hence free from slag, metal-shots or any un-fiberised elements. This ensures better quality, long-performing life of the product and its associated system.

General product features of fiberglass wool include high thermal resistance, high acoustic absorption, fire safety, hydrophobic-nature, chemical stability, shot free, and resiliency. Basic material has fire safe features like non-combustibility,

Twiga range of products• Twiga Insul: Fiberglass

• Twiga Insul: Fiberglass insulation boards and slabs aluminium or polypropylene based facing or unfaced

• Twiga Insul: Preformed pipe section

Being inorganic and non-toxic, Fiberglass insulation is completely safe to use when it is applied under specified guidelines informs Biswajit Roy, Manager- Building Solution, U.P. Twiga Fiberglass Ltd.

non-toxicity, limited or zero spread of flames (Class ‘O’ / Class 1). It is pure and does not settle down. In India it complies to general standards of IS: 8183,IS:3346,IS:3144 and IS:9842.

Environmental features include recycling of glass cullet from industrial waste, compressed packaging to reduce transportation cost and energy (also less packaging waste), reusability and long performing life.

How safe is the use of glasswool insulation?Fiberglass insulation is completely safe to use when it is applied under specified guidelines. This product is inorganic and non-toxic. As explained earlier, it has fire safe features that reduces fire load in buildings and also approved by Factory Mutual. This product had been manufactured worldwide for more than 60 years and evolved through various technological innovations. Twiga manufacture fiberglass insulation

products under technological license from Saint Gobain Isover, France and adopted world-class TEL technology in manufacturing. This helps to achieve best quality and safety standards in the insulation products.

What additional measures to be taken in building solutions to optimise use of glasswool insulation?Without appropriate installation methods insulation products cannot perform optimally. Insulation materials need to be protected from various weatherisation effects. Vapour, air and water barrier need to be incorporated along with insulation system judiciously wherever required. To maintain long performing life of the insulation material, specifically in high rainfall area it is suggested to use internal insulation system rather than external. Use of insulation can also be decided considering various factors like shading area, window wall ratio, building orientation etc.

What are the safety requirements and precautions to be undertaken in the use of insulation wools? In building segment normally bonded wools with laminations (aluminium, polypropylene, tissue or glass cloth) are used that significantly reduces fiber erosion. However if extensive cutting of the insulation is required, then mask and gloves should be used along with full sleeve cloths.

Do we have any safety standard in the use of insulation wools? In India Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) develop insulation and other industrial product standards. There are hardly any standards on application of insulation products. IS 10556 is one document that recommends handling and storage practices of various insulation material. Most of the manufactures have their own material safety data sheet and application documents for insulation customers. n

Sauerland infill board: world’s timber substitute for infill materialIndia is a unique country which utilizes timber batten infill in the flush and skin doors, a primitive process discarded globally many decades back. According to a news report, unless the green house gas emissions are reduced; the temperatures in Mumbai will be at the historical extreme by 2034. Other Indian cities are not behind.

Time has come to say goodbye to our obsession for timber-filled doors. One may be aware that the concept of recycling wood scrap as an infill in doors is no more a

reality as the saw-mill operations are getting smaller with reduction of timber availability. On the other hand, there is an explosion of construction due the rise in housing needs all over India. More than 12 lakh trees every year are required to feed the infill needs of over 100 lakh doors each year. Realising the bare facts and non-sustainable practices, other countries have already switched to eco-friendly infill boards like the tubular boards which are 100 per cent made from recycled wood wastes. India should also change; it is too late already.

1. Sound insulation

The construction leads to almost 50 per cent reduction in sound passed via door compared to honeycomb filled door.

3. Thickness tolerance

Critical thickness tolerance of +/-0.1 mm in the board gives rid of telegraphing as the board calibrated board gives a beautiful surface finish and a good bond between the skin and the board.

2. Construction

The density in solid areas i.e. walls of board is high 520 Kgs/m3. Further the arch principle as in case of construction of dams or bridges give high impact resistance.

4. Weight reduction

Tubular boards give value weight to the door, making it ideal choice for high-rise buildings as well as provide better acoustical, safer door.

The tubular infill boards are an eco-friendly, green product initiative, replacing the 80 per cent of timber used internally as door infill which dramatically improves the performance of the door.

The only filler board available in India meeting the formaldehyde emission norm making it suitable for indoor use.

7. PEFC certified

Save the tree for reducing climate change. All Sauerland products are certified with PEFC.

6. Straightness

The tubular structure also helps the door in maintaining straightness under climatic variations.

8. Swelling in thickness

Almost zero thickness swelling in Sauerland board compared to flat-pressed board which expands in thickness, causing stress on skin bonding and rupture the door.

Sauerland infill board has been used by the door industry for 63 years as a timber substitute for infill material around the world in over 65 countries. It is reasonable to say that it is much older in use than the timber batten filling, common in India in the flush door industry. n

EXPERTS COLUMNChemicals & Coatings

Tips on maintaining floorsA home is more than just a brick and mortar structure; it is an extension of one’s personality and aspirational value. There are household who invest substantial amount of their time and money, ensuring a complete make over of the house but soon start noticing the cracks in their tiles or leakage from the bathroom walls which seeps into the dry area of a living room or bedroom leading to chipping of paints.

After investing money in possessing the dream home, a lot of efforts go in maintaining it so that the house looks beautiful and sparkling for years. One of the major concern areas is maintaining the flooring of the house. Even after cleaning, the tiles meticulously sometimes they look dirty.

These problems are common among most households, but the best way to resolve these issues is while you are initiating your interior work. Normally, the materials and components used in the bathroom to make its floor, wall including the service pipes and sanitary fittings are susceptible to natural movement as a result the materials made of clay and tiles could increase in size, affecting the joints and causing the tiles to shift.

To prevent leakage in dry walls and to protect water splash areas, one can use waterproof adhesive beneath tiles instead

of adhering it with cement. Cement generally tends to settle and contracts, hence causes cracking of tiles, hollow sound and debonding. Tiles should be adhered with a glass tile adhesive, which is 100 per cent waterproof adhesive and can even work underwater.

Very often people are looking for seamless tiling for their kitchens and bathroom. Whereas the tiles should be installed with a minimum gap of 2 mm. The cement, which is used to fill the tile gaps, turns black with fungal growth, giving the flooring a dirty look. Spillage of ghee, turmeric, ketchup and leafy vegetables is common in kitchen the same affects the tiling gaps and leads to decolorising of the cement.

While products like vinegar and soft drinks can lead to erosion of the cement. Most households are unaware of the impact of these products on their tiles.

Using a rainbow tile mate epoxy grout is the best way to fill tile joints in kitchen and bathroom. These epoxy grouts are called tile mate as they are stain resistant, antibacterial and non-cracking. Above all, they are CFTRI approved for their food-grade quality.

Kitchen and bathrooms are highly exposed to temperature variations which generally lead to contraction in

cement joints, leading to breakage of tiles, chipping off the cement filling etc. These RTM epoxy grouts then act as a permanent waterproof joint filler that can sustain temperature upto 100 C.

Unlike cement, these epoxy grouts are stain resistant and available in 22 shades. They can be used in contrast colors of the tiles as that adds to the effect of the kitchen and highlights the kitchen or bathroom tiling.

While there are plethora of products available in the market to keep it clean, some of them could be actually harming your flooring. It is advisable to avoid harsh chemicals on tiles to remove stains or dirt and maintain the shine. Using something like a Roff Ceraclean can help as it has been specially made to clean the tiles and ceramic wares, e.g. wash basin. Its pH is well balanced to remove those tough stains of hard water and paint and keep floor looking fresh and ensure its durability for years. n

Plural component hot melt spray epoxy liningHindustan Coatings offers copper slag blasting and high performance epoxy lining through plural component hot melt rotary spray gun equipment for its specialist clients requirements to achieve 1,500 micron DFT coating.

Grit blasting and coating application procedure Copper slag grit blasting: Different chemistries lead to different operating results depending on the size and hardness of the grit. However the standard procedure of sand blasting is carried out by copper slag grit blasting with various sizes to achieve 50 to 70 microns profile as well as finishes as per SA-2 ½.

Steel grit: Steel grit blasting is ideal for aggressive cleaning applications. Steel grit quickly strips different types of surface contaminants from steel and other foundry metals. Steel grit is softer than aluminium oxide and does not fracture as easily, making it ideal for internal pipe line applications. The angular nature of steel grit produces an etched surface on metal for superior adhesion of paint, epoxy, polyurethane and other coatings.

Since Kramer is a primary steel grit supplier, multiple chemistries of steel grit are available. Steel grit that is formulated as a softer (40-50 HRC) metal rounds off rapidly, making it ideal for quick stripping of oxides and cleaning of moulds. Harder steel grit (55-65 HRC) maintains the angular nature of the grit to provide continuous cutting action. This coating of paint improves their corrosion resistance. The paint system consists of a two-part epoxy resin mixture when properly mixed and applied. n

Centrilit NC: MC-Bauchemie’s solution to improve durability of concrete

MC-Bauchemie stands for sophisticated products and system solutions. Since 1961, MC-Bauchemie has been strengthening its position as the manufacture of construction building chemicals. In an interview with B2B Purchase, Sunny Surlaker shares how a bright toned, aesthetic concrete surface can be achieved.

Improving durability of concreteApart from the range of concrete super plasticizers, which influence the properties of fresh concrete in workability and workability retention, MC-Bauchemie believes in improving durability of the concrete. To improve this aspect of concrete in terms of improved constructability, excellent durability, reduced maintenance and time, MC-Bauchemie has developed Centrilit NC to impart these properties to the concrete.

Centrilit NC (nano-crystalliser) is a pozzolanic concrete additive based on amorphous aluminosilicate. It consists of a synthetically manufactured material, not an industrial by-product. Apart from a high uniformity, a long-term availability is also ensured. Centrilit NC

is available as a 50 per cent suspension (slurry) or as fine powder.

Making homogeneous concreteCentrilit NC can be mixed fast into the concrete. The particle size is significantly smaller than the particle size of cement. The particles more or

less completely fill the fine cavities in the hardened cement paste, depending on the grade of dispersion. Not only the concrete strength, but the concrete density is also increased by the pozzolan. The chloride migration is reduced; the resistance against detrimental substances is improved; and the durability of the concrete is generally increased. Centrilit NC makes the manufacture of very homogeneous concrete possible. Thus the surface quality can be optimised. A bright toned, aesthetic concrete surface can be achieved.

Benefits for Centrilit NC• Providesexcellentwatertightness• Reduces chloride ingress and

carbonation• Increases sulphate resistant of

concrete• Enhancedworkabilityandfinishingof

concrete• Reduced shrinkage, due to “particle

packing” making concrete denser• Improved colour by lightening the

colour of concrete, making it possible to tint concrete integrally

• Endlessquantities• Factorymadehomogenousproduct• Betterworkability• Reduced dosage of super plasticiser

as compared to similar mineral admixtures

• Betterpumpability.

“Centrilit NC makes the manufacture of very homogeneous concrete possible,” says Sunny Surlaker, Head - Admixtures Division, MC-Bauchemie India Pvt. Ltd.

Page 109: B2B Purchase February 2014

PROFILE Chemicals & Coatings

Tried and tested reliabilityThe use of this type of material is historic. Use of calcined clays such as Centrilit NC in construction for mortars and concrete dates back in 1000 BC. For example, the water storage “Cisterns” unearthed in Jerusalem makes use of a waterproof mortar consisting of fired-brick powder (calcined clay) and hydraulic limes. This

3,000-year-old principle was also used to develop cements and cementing mortars in Germany ca. and Great Britain ca.

Modern studies and usage examples have also proved reliability of Centrilit NC. Applications have included UHPC park benches, cladding panels, Budapest central STP, other STPs and

pipe companies across Europe.

Ensuring concrete reliabilityThe quality control can be maintained and variations in the material can be minimised. Concrete reliability, as always, is a combination of various factors such as production, mixing and placing. Efficient site quality control works best. n

Antirust solution for paint applicators, steel fabricators and rebars

Promtech Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. and Innovative Coating Industries offer the rust converter RUSTOFIX 1411 and ZINKOTE -20 zinc rich paints/coatings for mild steel engineering fabrications and structures. Both products are developed on the latest technology available and offer outstanding corrosion resistance life for the coated structures. The combination coating have passed 1,000 hours of fog chamber salt spray test and can resist every type of corrosion, including marine and salty atmospheres to chemical fumes and high humidity conditions.

Surface preparationsThe preparation for rusted and non-rusted steel (C sections, I beams and pipes/angles used for all heavy engineering fabrication) is done by complete removal of oil and grease (if present) and a light wire brushing to remove the existing loose rust (oxides of iron).

RUSTOFIX 1411Apply one coat of RUSTOFIX 1411, a rust converter cum rust preventive cum a primer coat. This has a good adhesion on all types of steel and provides a 12-15 micron primer coating which is bluish, brown and black. Since this takes the iron metal to its last form (adherent rust is converted to ferrosoferric oxide, an inert complex, and forms a barrier coating, allowing no more rusting of

steel due to atmospheric oxygen or moisture in atmosphere.)

Water-based RUSTOFIX 1411 contains complex (chelating) agents, driers, levelling agents, preservatives and polymerisation boosters. It dries in 10-15 minutes and is non flammable. It covers 120 sq. feet per litre.

RUSTOFIX 1411 can be used by

spray/dip, brush and swabbing. The black coating is absolutely adherent and shall not be washed. This coating dries within 8 hours and can be overcoated after 24 hours. Subsequent coating is optional. Steel will remain rust protected even after this single application. Overcoating with any high-grade paint, zinc-rich paints, CRPs, epoxies and modified alkyd paints will increase anticorrosion life of the metal.

ZINKOTE 20The rust-converted steel shall be

overcoated with ZINKOTE 20, a zinc-rich paint used for cold galvanising touch-up. ZINKOTE 20 is manufactured by use of pure acrylic resin and 99 per cent pure zinc metal flakes which have horizontal packing in the dry film. Zinc metal, being extremely passive to any chemical action or oxidation,

completely stops any further corrosion or attack of atmospheric oxygen, saline water, humidity in air, or chemical vapours and fumes on the coated steel sections and fabrication.

Its single coat offers 18-20 microns of zinc and double coat, if necessary, may be applied after 24 hours. ZINKOTE 20 is an instant air-drying paint; hence, unused tins should be always tightly closed to avoid losses due to evaporation. The coating shall confirm to most of the requirements of national as well as international standards.

ZINC BRIGHT in 500 millilitre aerosol format also offers silver bright finish cold galvanising on damaged/ scratched galvanised surfaces. n

Kirloskar installs water pumping system for Mundra UMPPGlobal fluid management company Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. (KBL) has collaborated with Tata Power and installed the world’s largest circulating water pumping system for Tata Power’s Mundra UMPP (Ultra Modern Power Plant).

A mammoth 10.5 million litres of water is circulated with the help of KBL’s 10 concrete volute pump sets every minute. The Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd. (CGPL), Tata Power’s wholly-owned subsidiary, which has implemented the 4,000 MW (800 MW x 5 units) UMPP requires massive amounts of water to condense the heat generated in the production of power.

Ravindra Ulangwar, Associate Vice President and Head - Power Sector, KBL said, “The layout of the pumping system is designed in such a way that large fluctuations in the sea water level due to tidal variation are taken care of. The motors are installed above the high tide level whereas pumps are installed in such a

way that enough submergence is available during low tide levels. To accommodate this, motors are connected to the pump shaft with a specially designed cardon shaft. The length of the cardon shaft with universal coupling is 12 metres, making it one of the longest pump shafts. The entire pumping system is so large that it has become the largest circulating water system in the world.”

In order to ensure the perfect flow pattern for smooth operation of the pumps, KBL also conducted a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)

analysis, followed by a physical model study for the fore-bay and sump at the Hydraulic Research Centre at Kirloskarvadi. A prototype physical model was built to 1:12 scale ratio. KBL also conducted a pump model study to establish the hydraulic performance of the concrete volute pumps.

The Mundra UMPP is India’s first and most energy efficient coal-based thermal power plant using supercritical technology to create lower greenhouse gas emissions and its main power generation equipment is sourced from Japan and Korea. n
