Children’s Museum Celebrates 35 Years of LearningFor 35 years the Children’s Museum at La Habra has inspired and educated thousands of Southern California children, encouraging an enthusiasm for learning within even the youngest child. Opened to the public in December 1977, the Museum was the first of its kind in Southern California and one of only a few such museums on the West Coast during the 1970s.The Museum’s inception was the result of community concern about the lack of cultural institutions and educational opportunities available to the children of North Orange County. In 1972 the City of La Habra initiated a five-year planning process for a children’s museum, studying best practices in the field, developing financial support,

acquiring property, and hiring professional staff. The old Union Pacific Depot — a structure built in 1923 — was chosen as the museum site. The Museum opened with eight permanent exhibits, many of which remain unique to this day. Permanent exhibits were complemented with a program of changing exhibits, many of which were developed by Museum staff, on varied topics in science, history, the arts, humanities, and everyday

life. In response to a need to serve area schools and community groups, an educational outreach program was developed in 1981, with programs that have included weekend workshops and family festivals.By 1982 the Museum had grown and was in need of new programming to meet increased demand. With the assistance of the Map I Program, the City of La Habra, and Museum support groups such as the Friends of the Children’s Museum, a new mission statement for the Museum was articulated and a long-range plan developed and adopted. One of the most important results of this effort was the development of a capital expansion project providing much needed additional facility space, staffing, and equipment. The capital expansion plan was finalized in 1986, and a fundraising campaign followed between 1987 and 1989. A new wing of the Museum opened in December 1989 that tripled the building’s footprint to 12,500 square feet, adding new exhibit space

and a multi-purpose classroom that increased the scope of educational programs. A gift shop was created, run by volunteers from the Museum Guild. Museum hours were also expanded to a seven-day per week schedule, with a staff double its previous size.During the 1990s the Museum again evolved in response to changes within the community. New outreach programs, such as Kinderscience, Hands on English, and On the Road Scholarships were designed to engage and serve a broader population, in support of the formal education system supporting them. These programs have helped increase the Museum’s audience and relevance to the community. Since 2007, the Museum has been providing formal arts education through the “Young at Art” program to La Habra City School District students. La Habra students grades K-5 receive in-class instruction by professional artists who teach music, visual, and performing arts. In addition, the Museum offers outreach and school tours to surrounding counties.

In 2012, the Children’s Museum served more than 25,000 students from 70 different public schools, all the while providing the public one free day per month, thanks to a generous grant from Target.Currently, the Museum features seven galleries and 14 hands-on exhibits. In addition, an outdoor dinosaur topiary, a historic 1942 railroad caboose, and changing exhibits are part of the Museum’s programming. Children can ride a kid-sized carousel, watch model trains, take a walk in T-Rex’s footprints, pet an African lion, pump gas from the Green and Clean energy station, drive a life-sized bus, dress up and exercise their imagination muscles, and dig for fossils, all in a single afternoon. All exhibits are designed to enable children to learn through exploration, interaction, and play!In 2013, the Museum will celebrate its 35th anniversary with several special activities. Join us as we celebrate all year long with a special birthday activity once a month for Museum visitors, including a piñata party, cupcake decorating, face painting, special entertainment and a dance party for the kiddies. Help us continue to create family memories, cultivate creative modes of expression,

spark scientific curiosity, and encourage kids of all ages to imagine, discover, and connect with their world. Visit the Children’s Museum at La Habra today!

CVS Distribution WarehouseConstruction of the new CVS distribution center at the CVS business complex in the 1100 block of South Harbor Boulevard is currently underway and scheduled to be completed by March 2013. The old facility, constructed in 1952, was obsolete and demolished to make room for the new 213,200 square foot building. The new warehouse, which incorporates energy efficient features, is a modern “tilt-up” concrete structure that matches the color scheme of other buildings in the CVS complex. Nearly 68,000 square feet of landscaping have been incorporated to soften the visual appearance of the new building and add a touch of greenery to the property. A decorative main entryway will be located on the east side of the warehouse facing Harbor Boulevard.

The City nominated the distribution center for a “Red Carpet to Red Tape” Award this past fall. The award is sponsored by the Orange County Business Council (OCBC) and recognizes outstanding and innovative programs in economic and business development that retain or generate jobs and spur new private investment. Because the CVS project was deemed to be an excellent example of business retention and expansion in Orange County, the OCBC presented the City with a certificate of recognition.

CVS PharmacyIn addition to its new distribution center, CVS is also planning a new store to be built on the site of the former gas station at the northwest corner of Imperial Highway and Harbor Boulevard. This new development will enhance this gateway to the community and will complement the recent addition of the new Walmart that opened across Imperial Highway last October. The City of La Habra is pleased to retain and grow the presence of CVS in our community.

Habitat for HumanityDriven by a desire to increase housing opportunities for working families, Habitat for Humanity has a long history of developing homes across the country. After three years of hard work, the City of La Habra Planning Commission recently approved a new 7-unit condominium project to be built by Habitat for Humanity at 520-526 East La Habra Boulevard, a site previously owned by the La Habra Redevelopment Agency. Habitat for Humanity has built more than 170 homes in Orange County during the past quarter century, creating decent, affordable housing for nearly 1,000 people. Three of the units will be deed restricted so that they remain affordable for 45 years. Construction is expected to begin later this year. For more information about the project, contact the Community Development Department (Housing and Economic Development Division) at 562-905-9724. To learn more about Habitat for Humanity, visit the website at www.habitatoc.org.

New Storm Drains CompleteThe City has completed the construction of 600 feet of new, 24-inch reinforced concrete storm drain pipeline on La Habra Boulevard, between McPherson and Cypress Streets. The storm drains were approved by the City Council last

fall and will serve and assist in the future development of new residential and business properties along the south side of La Habra Boulevard, including the new Habitat for Humanity project. For more information about storm drains in La Habra, including regulatory requirements for storm water, please call the Community Development Department (Engineering Division) at 562-905-9720, or visit our website at lahabracity.com.

On October 31, 2012 a special ceremony was held to dedicate and officially unveil the signs designating the portion of Beach Boulevard that traverses the city as the La Habra Police Officer Michael Antony Osornio Memorial Highway.

The date of the ceremony was a fitting tribute as it was 18 years ago, on October 31, 1994, that Officer Osornio was killed when a drunk driver broadsided his patrol car at the intersection of La Habra Boulevard and Beach Boulevard. Officer Osornio is the only La Habra police officer to have been killed in the line of duty.

City to Host Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall: The Wall that Heals

There will be a variety of volunteer opportunities available in conjunction with this event. Anyone interested in volunteering or providing financial support for the event may contact David De Leon at 562-905-9708 or visit the Community Center, 101 W. La Habra Blvd., Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Approximately one-and-a-half years ago, the City of La Habra submitted a request to host the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall: The Wall that Heals, which is a half-scale replica of the original Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. that travels around the U.S. There are three components to the Wall — the half-scale replica, a traveling museum displaying artifacts from the Vietnam War, and an information center, where visitors can look up the names of service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The request was granted, and the Wall will arrive Wednesday, July 10th (set-up) and remain through Monday, July 15th (take-down).

LA HABRA’S DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANT OF THE QUARTER:

Dwarf Callistemon “Little John”

The Dwarf Callistemon (Callistemon citrinus), also known by the common name “Little John,” is an evergreen shrub that forms a rounded mound with narrow, 3-inch long bluish gray-green leaves. The genus was named by combining the Greek words ‘kallos’ (beautiful) and ‘stemon’ (stamens). Flowers of bright red bristle stamens can appear on the plant throughout the year, but peak bloom time tends to occur early summer through fall. The shrub should be planted in full sun to light shade. Little John is a drought tolerant species, but tolerates and usually performs best with some irrigation; however, in wet soils the plant tissue may have a tendency to turn yellow or white. Little John responds well to chelated iron fertilizers. It is a hardy species that can survive in temperatures as cold as 20-25 degrees Fahrenheit. Because Little John grows in a 3’ by 3’ mound it can serve as a great foundation plant.

Citizens’ Police AcademyThe Citizens’ Police Academy was developed to create an even closer working relationship between the La Habra Police Department and the citizenry of La Habra. The purpose of the Academy is to promote understanding between community members and law enforcement through education and personal interaction with the men and women of the La Habra Police Department. The course is not meant to train people to become police officers; rather the classes are designed to increase public awareness and allow for the further development of a strong working relationship and rapport.

The Citizens’ Police Academy is taught twice a year, once in English and once in Spanish, by personnel from all areas of the agency. The program consists of regularly scheduled evening classes held weekly over a six-week period. During that time, participants have an opportunity to gain knowledge about, as well as develop a better overall understanding of, the La Habra Police Department: how

it is organized, the varied ways it serves the community, and who the people are that respond when citizens call. In addition to classroom instruction, SWAT and K-9 demonstrations, attendees also have an opportunity to interact with the Chief of Police. Upon successful completion of the Academy, a graduation ceremony is held.

The next session, which will be conducted in Spanish, begins in mid-April. Classes will meet once a week on Tuesday evenings, for approximately three hours, at the La Habra Community Center, located at 101 W. La Habra Boulevard. Those wishing to participate can pick up an application at the La Habra Police Department, 150 N. Euclid Street. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, live or work in the City of La Habra, have no misdemeanor arrests within the past three years, and no felony arrests.

Our Local Treasure: La Habra Historical Museum

The La Habra Historical Museum began as a dream of the descendants of some of the earliest settlers in the La Habra Valley. Not wanting to lose the history of the Valley, plans to build a museum began in 1970. After years of fundraising, gathering artifacts, and searching for just the right location, the dream reached fruition with the soft opening of the museum in April 2010, in time for the city’s Citrus Fair.

The museum’s logo, the windmill, stands proudly outside the museum; the history is found inside. Historical pageant murals in the Main Gallery, painted by Matt Southgate, depict the City’s constant changes from the discovery period through the 1950s. Visitors view early agriculture and farming, business and family life in the permanent display cases.

The general store, a replica of how a store would look in the 1920s or ’30s, is filled with actual items from those time periods. Sad irons, hurricane lamps, kitchen tools and wares, and even a washing machine are a few of the artifacts found in the store. The Launer Family Theatre shows live recordings of some of early La Habra’s leading residents. Downstairs is the Research Center, which contains the La Habra Star dating back to 1917, historical records of club meetings, over a thousand photographs, school yearbooks, and research materials.

The museum is located at 215 E. La Habra Blvd., just north of the library and next to the Veterans Memorial Hall. It is open on Saturdays from 12:00-4:00 p.m. or by special appointment. Admission is free.

La Habra Chamber of Commerce’s Lunch Mob Feasts LocallyThe La Habra Chamber of Commerce samples La Habra’s fine cuisines during lunch hour by hosting a monthly “lunch mob” to attract new faces and try various restaurants throughout the area.

The lunch mob is made up of Chamber members and La Habra Goodwill Ambassadors who do their part by sharing with others what they liked about each meal.

Higo Sushi, Portofino’s, Ricardo’s El Ranchito, Thai Time, Vinnie’s Italian Restaurant, La Barca Cantina & Grill and Laura’s Loaves and Goodies are just few of the restaurants the lunch mob has visited.

These lunches have been fun and spontaneously educational. Each owner gives a short talk about the restaurant and the food. Join us as a guest and learn more about the programs the Chamber has to offer!

For more information on the Lunch Mob, contact Mark Sturdevant at the Chamber at 562-697-1704.

WEIGHT BEARING WALL YOGAExercise for the mind, brain and body! New evidence shows that engaging in mental and brain muscle training can change not just the function of the brain, but the structure itself. Meditation, which cultivates mindfulness, promotes a pattern of electrical activity in the brain and can break harmful cycles, such as depression, anxiety and anger, in which the mind repeats the same negative thoughts. This class also incorporates weight-bearing moves that increase bone density, a key issue for older adults. Please bring a yoga mat, towel or blanket, ear plugs and an eye mask to class. Canine Classes

INTERMEDIATE DOG OBEDIENCE & BEHAVIORAL CONDITIONING

The more you train, the more you bond. Calling all owners of clever canines that have already completed a basic obedience class — continuing your education with your canine companion is the responsible thing to do! Intermediate obedience will include long distance work on a 20-foot long line, increasing your canine’s ability to listen from far away, holding their sit stay and down stay using hand signals. They will also learn come from long distance and wait, in motion commands, the place command (point to a specific safe place, i.e., a mat, and the dog will learn to go there with positive reinforcement and down). Continuing to work on your communicative skills with your canine makes you a better handler. Being calm, confident, positive and motivating inspires your canine to work as one with you and builds a special bond. First class is an orientation without your dog; please bring a chair to sit on.

DOG OBEDIENCE & BEHAVIOR CONDITIONINGIs Spot always in the dog house? If so, get him out and trained so that he can become a happier member of your pack! Class activities will include basic obedience: heel, sit, stay, down-stay, come when called, stand for vet visits, wait command for door dashing, leave it command and walking on a loose leash without pulling. In addition, behavioral problems such as digging, excessive barking, nipping and jumping on people will be covered. Encouragement of nervous and sensitive dogs also will be addressed. Ms. Schmidt has worked as a dog trainer for 20 years, as well as working to rehabilitate wild life through North Orange County R.O.P.’s Wildlife Program, and working as an exotic animal trainer at Knott’s Berry Farm, where she learned much about canine behavior and animal communication from working with Timber Wolves.
