WINGATE UNIVERSITY

Students can do more at Wingate University...

Wingate University is

experiencing tremendous

growth, with more than 1,700

students enrolled for the 2006-

07 academic year. In order to

meet the demands of a busy and

productive university, Wingate

is expanding with new facilities

and renovations.

Founded in 1896, Wingate

University consistently ranks

among the best small colleges and is accredited by the

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The

University offers 37 undergraduate majors and master

degrees in business, education, physical education and sports

administration.

In the fall of 2003, Wingate University made another giant

step in both university and pharmacy history, enrolling the

charter class of the Wingate University School of Pharmacy.

This spring, the school will graduate its first class of

pharmacists. All 60 students who began the program in 2003

will graduate.

The Wingate University School of Pharmacy is one of three

schools of pharmacy in North Carolina, and the only one in

the Piedmont Region. The Cannon Academic Building,

which houses the School of Pharmacy, features study rooms,

labs, a drug information center, lecture halls and a student

lounge. Pharmacy students can utilize Café a la Carte for

their dining convenience.

The Dickson-Palmer Student Center offers the ideal location

for students to meet, catch a snack or a meal at the Klondike

snack bar, work out in the fitness center, play pool or visit

the campus bookstore. A recent remodeling of the center has

created a large central meeting area with a movable stage for

special events.

The Ethel K. Smith Library is home to a vast collection of

books, periodicals and other resources. A Starbucks coffee

shop is conveniently located in the library, featuring a patio

seating area for students to take an outdoor coffee break and

visit with friends.

The new Hayes Classroom Building opens this fall, taking

some strain from the overflowing class schedule of Burris

Hall. Burris will now house offices for many faculty

members. Classes will be spread out across Burris and

Hayes.

Interior renovations were made in the summer of 2005 to

Helms Residence Hall, giving the entire building a makeover.

A new annex to Cannon Residence Hall increased space for

freshman women by 84 beds. Upperclassmen may choose the

best in apartment living on campus at Jefferson at Wingate.

These apartments are fully equipped with all the conven-

iences of home. Additionally, construction will begin this

year on a new 72-bed student housing complex.

The women’s softball team will enjoy a new field house with

locker rooms for added convenience. Also new this year is a

concession stand and restroom facility that

overlooks Ron Christopher Baseball Stadium and Plyler

Athletic Field.

Wingate University also offers students and visitors the

opportunity to attend concerts in the George A. Batte Jr. Fine

Arts Center. The 2006-07 concert offerings include Mickey

Rooney, The Baltimore Consort, the American Chamber

Players, Daria Rabotkina and Five By Design, to name a few.

Two Saturday matinees for children are planned for 2006-07.

Every student at Wingate University enjoys the opportunity

to travel abroad at little or no additional cost through

W’International and other study abroad programs. Over the

past 26 years, students and their professors have

visited several hundred destinations on five continents

throughout the world. Students

may also spend a semester

abroad in London, Copenhagen

and Hong Kong.

More than 40 clubs and

organizations, including

sororities and fraternities, call

Wingate University home.

These clubs and organizations

give students the opportunity to

volunteer in the community and

develop leadership skills and

friendships that last

forever. For students who seek faith-based organizations, the

Christian Student Union (CSU) and weekly campus worship

services provide a chance to celebrate faith and come togeth-

er as a family.

Whether an individual participates in the W’International

program, is a member of an organization, attends a concert

during the year or participates in athletics or intramural

sports, students at Wingate University are perpetually busy.

There is always something right around the corner to learn,

participate in or volunteer for, giving students the chance to

follow the three Wingate University pillars: faith, knowledge

and service.

2007 WINGATE BASEBALL

The 2007 Wingate University baseball team will feature a good mix of experience and youth. Bulldog head coach Bill Nashbelieves the team will only get better as the season progresses. “As our team plays together and learns to play together…itwill be important to see how the experience and the youth blend together,” Nash said.

“We need the seniors to be good every day guys…showing everyone how to dothe right thing,” Nash added. “Obviously, we need the younger guys to continue toimprove and to be solid.”

Senior second baseman Shaughn Neal is one of Wingate’s leaders. A four-yearstarter, Neal led the South Atlantic Conference in sacrifice hits last year. “Shaughnis a steady player with good bat control,” Nash said. “Defensively, he is a four yearstarter who continues to improve. Behind Neal is freshman Kollin Wilkes, who willsee time at second and several other positions.

Senior designated hitter Josh Benton had 10 home runs in 2006. “We have greatexpectations for Josh,” Nash enthused. “This year, he is swinging the bat well andenjoying his role.” Benton was named to the pre-season All-SAC team.

Catchers Jay Barnes and Tim Cottrell complete the Bulldog senior class. Barnesjoined Benton on the pre-season All-SAC team. He will be Wingate’s everydaycatcher. “Jay can swing the bat and drive in runs,” Nash said. Barnes hit .413 withrunners in scoring position last year. He could also see time at DH.

“Good things happen when Tim (Cottrell) is in the ball game,” Nash noted. “He plays above his ability and the team respondswell for him.” Junior Dustin Hurdle and sophomore Blair Troutman will also see time behind the plate. Troutman could helpout at first base as well.

The Bulldogs will be young at first base. Freshman Bryan Bialecki has the edge going into the season, but he will miss thefirst few days of the season with a bicep injury. Fellow freshman Logan Beasley will see time at first base. Benton will alsohelp out at first base.

Sophomore Michael Parker is Wingate’s opening day shortstop. “Michael and Shaughn have played together for a year andthey work well together,” Nash said. “I think we are going to have a very solid and dependable middle infield combination.”Backing up Parker is sophomore Brian Karcewski and freshman Spencer Robinson.

Wingate will staff the third base position by committee. Karcewski will see time at the hot corner. “No matter where we putBrian, he gets it done,” Nash said. Karcewski will also see action from the Wingate bullpen. Wilkes is versatile enough to playsecond, short or third. He will make a contribution at third base. Beasley will battle for playing time as well. SophomoreKeaton Highfill could also see time as a utility infielder.

Freshman Spencer Robinson will start the season in left field. “Spencer can hit,” Nash said. “His bat is going to get him in thislineup.” Freshman Grayson Tanner and sophomore Jerome Henley can play all three outfield spots. “Grayson is an excitingaggressive player who has seen action in big games,” Nash noted. “Jerome has great speed and arm strength.”

Sophomore Nick Siega-Riz will patrol center field for the Bulldogs. Siega-Riz hit .278 with five home runs, seven doubles and34 RBI last season. “Nick made many impressive plays last year,” Nash said. “He is a good option for us.”

In right field, freshman Michael Taylor will get the early season nod. He played on a state championship team at D.H.Conley. “Michael is a strong and aggressive player,” Nash said. “I think he will be a fan favorite player before his career isover.”

“We are young in the outfield,” Nash noted. “These guys are going to get better and better. They have a chance to developinto something special. They don’t have the luxury of being freshmen and sophomores. They are going to play right awayand they will do well.”

Junior Garrett Kloots is Wingate’s number one pitcher entering the season. A transfer from Bowling Green State University,Kloots will miss some time with an injury. Nash believes Bulldog fans will like what they see when he returns. “Garrett is a big,hard-throwing right-hander,” Nash said. Sophomore right-hander Chris Alfonso will also miss time due to injury. “Chris had agood fall,” Nash noted.

“Injuries have already really impacted our rotation,” Nash said. Sophomore Zak Laws “started several important games for uslast year,” Nash noted. “Laws pitched well in the summer and fall. His development continues through the spring.”

Sophomore Richard Allred was a high school teammate of Michael Parker. “We have been very impressed with his fall andspring,” Nash said. Freshman Lee Oxendine will fill a starter’s role in the early going. Nash believes he could also be used asa long reliever. Junior Jeremy Helms will throw short stints and give the pitching staff much needed leadership.

Freshman Tyler Almond is “talented enough to pitch in the rotation, but versatile enough to be a middle guy,” Nash acknowl-edged. “He can spot start and he can finish games.” Karcewski will also fit this bill for the Bulldogs. In the friendly confines ofRon Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field, Karcewski was 2-0 with a 1.97 ERA in 15 appearances last season.

Benton will see relief action for the Bulldogs. “He is a maximum effort guy,” Nash said.Freshman Phillip Hilliard gives Wingate a left-hander. Sophomore Joe Cobb is anotherlefty who will see action on both the varsity and the junior varsity. Bialecki, Beasley andfellow freshmen Ryan McIntyre and Michael Manfro give Wingate many pitchingoptions.

Sophomore Trey McMenamin is left-handed bat off the bench who will see action.Sophomore infielder Will Fox and sophomore outfielder Dustin Weaver will add depth. Sophomore Forrest Williams canplay all three outfield spots and catcher. “These guys will give us some depth, as we will need it,” Nash noted.

“We have many new faces and much new talent added to our program (this year),” Nashsaid. “We see ourselves getting closer back to the place where we want to be. We wantto reestablish ourselves in the conference and region. I expect us to play well and beone of the best teams around.”

The Bulldogs will look “to establish an identity,” Nash said. “I believe these guys are verycapable. I’m not being unrealistic. We will continue to get better and better.”

Assistant coaches Jeff Gregory and Mike Juhl bring unique abilities to the table. In his sixth season, Gregory “is an impor-tant part of Wingate baseball,” Nash said. Juhl has been a collegiate head coach and spent time in the Phillies organization.

Wingate will play a tough schedule, with regional games slated against Florida Tech in Savannah, Ga. The head coach for FITis former Wingate assistant Paul Knight. Shippensburg will visit Wingate again this year. The Bulldogs will play two gameswith first-year program N.C. Central, including a contest at the Durham Bulls Park.

The South Atlantic Conference “is going to be awfully good,” Nash said. Lincoln Memorial joins the league this year. Bulldogfans will have an opportunity to see the Railsplitters March 3-4 at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field.
