  • •Our bodies have two types of specialized cells:

    Somatic Cells- body cells

    • cells that make up all of the body tissues and organs

    • utilize Mitosis-used for growth, development, and repair

    • Asexual Reproduction = 2 identical daughter cells with same number of chromosomes as original cell

Two Types of Cells & Two Types of Division

  • Germ Cells develop into Gametes- sex cells

    • an egg or a sperm cell

    • utilize Meiosis- defined as “division resulting in a reduction in chromosome number”

    - AKA: Meiosis is the creation of gamete cells (sperm

    and egg)

    - gametes will NOT be identical= unique

    - gametes have HALF chromosomes of original cell

    - Sexual Reproduction= fusion of 1 egg and 1 sperm known as fertilization creates a zygote

Two Types of Cells & Two Types of Division

  • • In order for offspring to be produced from sexual reproduction and have cells that are diploid, the sperm and egg cells must be haploid

    • Diploid = 2 sets of chromosomes

    • Haploid = 1 set of chromosomes • Somatic Cells chromosome #____ : Gamete chromosome #_____

Haploid vs. Diploid/ Somatic vs. Gamete

  • All of our somatic cells are diploid – we have one set of chromosomes from EACH parent.

All of our gametes are haploid – they have half of the DNA a person should have

You must join two halves (sperm and egg) to make a whole person!

Haploid vs. Diploid/ Somatic vs. Gamete

  • Chromosomes Terminology

    Centromere

    Centromere

  • How are the gametes different? Crossing Over- (exchange of genetic material) occurs due to close proximity of homologous chromosomes- chromosomes that have the same length, appearance, and copies of genes.

(both chromosomes have the eye color gene at the SAME SPOT, but one gene may be for blue eyes while the other is for brown eyes)

-1 from Mom and 1 from Dad

The paternal chromosome comes from dad

The maternal chromosome comes from mom

Each chromosome in a tetrad has two sister chromatids attached at the centromere

-Results in variation of gametes= genetic diversity!
