Unit Objective: The main objective of this unit is for students to understand the history and culture of the ancient Aztec, Inca, and Maya civilizations.
Common Core State Standards: ELA History Social Studies Standards: 1, 2, 4, & 5
Included for each Civilization: Introductory K-W-L Chart (1-page) Student Handout (6-pages) Student Handout Answer Key (6-pages) Student/Group Guidelines (1-page) Video & Presentation Handout (1-page) Group Presentation Rubric (1-page) Project ideas (1 page) Game Board (2-pages)
Prior to teaching unit: You will want to look through the material and figure out what you want the
students to accomplish. After you decide, copy the handouts that are needed. Break your class into groups of 3-4 and assign each group a civilization (Aztec,
Inca, or Maya). You will also want to make sure you have the necessary research materials for the
unit (textbook, books on the civilization, Internet sites, other). You may also want to look for some videos to show the students. If you plan on using the game board, you may want to laminate a few of them and
cut out the game cards. You will also want to figure out if you will have your students work individually, in
partners, or in groups.

Introduction: 1. Pass out the K-W-L charts to the students. Find out what the students know about
their assigned civilization by listing their thoughts on the left hand column. After about 5-10 minutes, have students share. You may also want the students to fill in the middle column of the chart as well.
2. Pass out the student handout and discuss what is needed to be done. You may want to decide how you want the groups to work on this. You could have groups work on the entire packet together or each group can separate the tasks and have each member work on a part (vocabulary, Geography, etc.).
Work Days: 1. Review with the students what it looks and sounds like when working in a group.
It’s sometimes helpful to have a couple students model the right way and also the wrong way.
2. For these days, students will work on the assignment. Inform the groups how long they will have to complete the activity.
3. Walk around and monitor as each group works. Note: Groups may find it hard to find some information. You can address this with the answer keys later on.
4. Students should also try to figure out how they wish to present their information (you could also set up some guidelines too).
5. Remind students that if they get done early, they can work on one of the project ideas (you may want to decide if this is optional or a requirement for your students).
Optional Activities: 1. Presentations: Groups will present what they learned
about their civilization. You could divide each group so that they are only presenting a certain part of what was researched. That way, if you have more than one group researching a civilization the information being shared is new. Pass out the “Presentation and Video Notes” handout to each student. Have the students take notes as each group presents their information. Be sure you have your presentation grading rubric printed off and ready to go.
2. Show Video(s): After your students present, you could show them any videos that you found. It’s up to you if you want your students to take notes on the video(s) or not.
3. KWL Chart: Have students fill in the “L” part of their K-
W-L charts. 4. Game Board: For some extra review, you can have your
students play the board game provided.
