Myanmar is a land where various species ofcrops thrive due to its favourable soil and climatepattern. The government is fulfilling agriculturalrequirements including adequate supply ofirrigation water for further improvement of theagricultural sector.

So far, the government has constructed morethan 200 dams along with river water pumpingstations and underground water tapping stations.As a result, monsoon and summer paddy, peas,sesame, corn, sunflower and long staple cotton aregrown with multiple- and mixed-cropping patterns.

Food security is of vital importance for everyone,regardless of region. Now, it is an opportune time offarmers to work harder to ensure not only local foodsecurity but also boosting export of crop surpluses.In growing marketable crops, advanced agriculturalmethods are to be applied on a wider scale forboosting per acre yields of the crops.

Myanmar’s beans and pulses are in demand athome and abroad. So, it is required to try for thecrops to get handsome prices. Major requirementsfor boosting export of beans and pulses are extensivecultivation of high-yield strains, use of quality strains,and choosing particular strains that need less amountof fertilizer and pesticide.

Green gram, pigeon pea and black gram areexported more than any other pea. In 2008-2009financial year, Myanmar exported more than 1.5million tons of beans and pulses. The prices of blackgram and green gram went up recently. Over theperiod from the end of last year to now, the price ofpigeon pea has hit the record high. In Myanmar,pigeon pea is grown on a commercial scale inMagway, Natmauk, Aunglan, Pyay, Pakokku,Chauk, Yenangyoung, Kyaukpadaung, Monywaand Shwebo.

Myanmar’s beans and pulses inclusive of greengram, pigeon pea and black gram have won customersatisfaction at home and abroad. Here, beans andpulses will soon be in season. Pea merchants andfarmers are, therefore, to take all possible steps forboosting export of quality beans and pulses.

PESHAWAR, 9 Jan —Suspected US mis-siles killed four people in northwest Pa-kistan, the latest in a surge of such at-tacks since a suicide bomber staged adeadly assault on CIA employees justacross the border in Afghanistan.

The attack on Friday was the sixth injust over a week in North Waziristan, anunusually intense bombardment that alsofollows repeated calls by the UnitedStates for Pakistan to do more againstmilitants there blamed for attacks onAmerican and NATO forces in Afghani-stan.

The area is the stronghold of theHaqqani network, an Afghan Talebangroup with links to al-Qaeda. Its militantsare responsible for cross-border attacksand could have played a role in the 30Dec attack that killed seven CIA employ-ees in Khost Province, analysts believe.

Venezuela sent F-16 jets tointercept US military plane

CARACAS, 9 Jan — Venezuelan President HugoChavez said on Friday that he had ordered F-16 jets tointercept a US military plane that twice violated Ven-ezuelan airspace earlier in the day.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Chavez said that theUS plane, based on the Netherlands’ Curacao Island inthe Caribbean, intruded into Venezuelan airspace twice,the first for 15 minutes and the second 19 minutes.

The F-16s escorted the US plane out, he added.However, the US military denied that any of its

planes entered Venezuelan airspace on Friday.“As a matter of policy we do not fly over a nation’s

air space without prior consent and coordination,” theUS Southern Command, which is in charge of US mili-tary activities in the hemisphere, said in a statement.“We operate with the utmost respect for the sovereigntyof the nations in our hemisphere.

Last month, Chavez accused the United States offlying an unmanned spy plane into Venezuela’s air-space and vowed to shoot down any similar aircraft inthe future.

NATO says two service membersdead in Afghanistan

KABUL, 9 Jan — Officials say two NATO service members havedied in Afghanistan, including a Danish soldier killed by a roadsidebomb. The Danish army says one of its soldiers was killed and fiveinjured on Friday when a blast hit their vehicle in southern Afghani-stan.

The newspaper said that with the ar-rival of more US Marines in Afghani-stan and the implementation of a newUS counter-insurgency strategy, Britishtroops might pull out of the upperHelmand valley and concentrate on thebiggest population centre aroundLashkar Gah.

It cited military officials as sayingBritish commanders were ready to pullout of Musa Qala and Kajaki, home to

a hydroelectric power station to whichthey brought a turbine in an operationin 2008.

Handing over the two districts to UStroops would free up roughly 1,100troops to patrol the centre of HelmandProvince, which was the initial strategywhen British soldiers were first deployedthere in 2006, said the Times.

However, the newspaper said thereis resistance to leaving Sangin, the dis-trict that has claimed the highest numberof British casualties.

A/H1N1 pandemic death tollrises to 12,799, says WHOGENEVA, 9 Jan — The global death toll of

the A/H1N1 pandemic influenza has risen to atleast 12,799, the World Health Organization(WHO) said in a latest update on Friday.

Of all the deaths, some 6,880 occurred inthe Americas, while at least 2,554 were reportedfrom Europe. The other four WHO regions,namely Western Pacific, South-East Asia, EastMediterranean and Africa, reported 1,361,1,165, 708 and 131 deaths respectively. TheWHO’s tally of global pandemic deaths is anunder-representation of the actual numbers asmany deaths are never tested or recognized asinfluenza related, the UN agency noted.

The A/H1N1 flu virus was first identifiedin Mexico in April, and the WHO declared thenew influenza as a pandemic in June. So far thevirus has caused infections in more than 208countries and overseas territories or communi-ties.—Xinhua

Christian Quishpe Aguirre, 24, wasin a support base for NATO troops inthe west Afghan province of Herat whena BMR armored personnel carrier be-ing checked fell upon him and took hislife, the ministry said in a statement.Aguirre, who was married and had adaughter, joined the Spanish Army in2005. His body will be repatriated to hishometown in Zaragoza on Saturday.

The ministry said that the chief colo-nel of the Spanish base in Herat Prov-ince has opened an investigation.

Since 2002, a total of 91 Spanishsoldiers have lost their lives inAfghanistan.

New figures for November 2009 showed that the seasonally-adjusted unem-ployment rate hit a miserable 10.0 percent, with 102,000 more people left withouttheir own income compared to October. In Spain, one of continental Europe’sbiggest economies, the rate has now hit a shocking 19.4 percent.

LOS ANGELES, 9 Jan—India intends to purchase10 C-17 Globemastercargo planes, US aero-space major Boeing an-nounced on Friday.

India wants the C-17Globemaster cargoplanes, each worth at least200 million US dollars, toreplace their fleet of Rus-sian aircraft, according toBoeing.

India sent the requestto the US government for

the acquisition of the 10aircraft last year, Boeingspokesman Jerry Drellingsaid, adding that finaliza-tion of the agreementscould take years.

“It’s been a good startto the year for the C-17programme,” Drellingsaid. “We’re very excitedabout this project.”

Final assembly of theC-17 takes place atBoeing’s Long Beachplant near Los Angeles,

The C-17 Globe-master III air lifter isoften used to transportcombat equipment andtroops or to deliver hu-manitarian supplies. UNITED NATIONS, 9 Jan — UN Secretary-GeneralBan Ki-moon on Friday took note of last year’s “en-couraging developments” in disarmament, pledging toadvance the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.

LONDON, 9 Jan — An influential com-mittee of British MPs has criticized suc-cessive governments for allowing Britainto develop a drinking habit that is killingtens of thousands of people every year.

“Over the last 60 years drinking hab-its have been transformed. In 1947 thenation consumed 3.5 litres of pure alco-hol per head: The current figure is 9.5 li-tres,” the House of Commons health com-mittee said in a report on Friday.

“This ... has been an increasing sourceof concern. These involve not only theconsequences of binge drinking which area cause of many serious accidents, disor-der, violence and crime, but also long-termheavy drinking which causes more harmto health,” said the report.

Alcohol was probably a significantfactor in 30,000 to 40,000 deaths per year,

the report said, citing figures from the presi-dent of the Royal College of Physicians.

The MPs called for an increase in alco-hol pricing to deter drinkers, and they esti-mated that a minimum price of 50 penniesper unit would save more than 3,000 livesper year. A unit of alcohol is about 300millilitres of normal beer. They also calledfor tougher rules for advertising.

Marketing by the drinks industry was600 to 800 million pounds (960 million to1.3 billion US dollars) in 2003, accordingto the report. 2009 and automakers should see more strong growth this year, an industry groupreported on Friday.

Boosted by Beijing’s stimulus, 2009 passenger car sales soared to 10.3 millionand total vehicle sales are estimated at 13.6 million, the China Passenger CarAssociation said. That represents growth of about 45 percent from 2008.

“This is even better than anyone expected,” the group’s general secretary, RaoDa, said at a news conference in Shanghai.

By contrast, US sales of cars and light trucks plunged 21 percent in 2009 to10.4 million as a shaky economy kept buyers away from showrooms. It was thefirst time any country bought more cars than Americans.

The Chinese group’s data were in line with forecasts by JD Power and Associ-ates of 12.7 million sales of cars and light trucks and 900,000 bigger vehicles in2009 for a total of 13.6 million. The company in early 2009 expected sales of 9million vehicles but raised that as Beijing rolled out measures to boost demand.

19 indicted in US for masscybercrimes conspiracy scam

HOUSTON,9 Jan—Nineteen individuals, mostly fromnorthern Texas, was indicted on Friday in an alleged15-million-US-dollar international cybercrimes con-spiracy scam.

The federal indictment, announced on Friday by USAttorney JamesJacks, charged the 19 with conspiracyto commit wire and mail fraud. Of the 19 defendants,including two from Canada and eastern Europe, 15 werealso charged with fraud related to electronic mail.

The indictment alleges that from 2003 to 2009, thedefendants conspired to create shell companies to de-fraud telecommunications companies, credit reportingagencies and other services providers.
