mission and purpose Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary is a graduate theological school that

prepares skilled, bold, and articulate leaders who share the transforming love of

Jesus Christ. Related to The United Methodist Church, with an ecumenical and

international reach, we prepare leaders who are equipped to live and proclaim

the Gospel and to teach in diverse congregations and educational settings. Our

teaching and learning settings will be places of hospitality where we pursue respect

and reconciliation in all encounters.

Dear Friends,

What a remarkable time this is at the seminary. The 2008-2009 year saw many accomplishments: we welcomed the largest incoming class of seminarians in many years, successfully acquired the Seabury collection of the United Library, and strengthened the faculty and curriculum with new scholars and initiatives designed to prepare bold leaders for the future.

Exceptional programming at the seminary for pastors, as well as our students, continued in many ways. A grant from the Luce Foundation helped us renew our teaching in the area of Global Christianity and World Religions. Pastors from across the nation joined our students in workshops on preaching through the Styberg Institute. The Stead Center for Ethics and Values continued to support important programs in understanding contemporary global and moral concerns.

Even in the face of difficult economic times, Garrett-Evangelical saw strong giving to the annual fund and capital campaign. We have witnessed significant growth in our Council of Laity and celebrated new strength for the Center for the Church and the Black Experience and steady improvement in programming for Asian and Hispanic students. Our students were involved in learning to live healthier lifestyles through the Fit to Lead program and working together as a community in mission.

The economic challenges demanded our attention and best planning, so that the school will pass through this time with strength for the future. We gave attention to controlling our expenses and carefully deploying our staff. We reduced expenditures significantly for this year, deferred salary increases and delayed scheduled faculty searches. The faculty and staff have been remarkable during this time. Even as families, congregations, and communities have needed to cut back and be very judicious about expenditures, so have we at Garrett-Evangelical. In fact, the only area of increased spending in this year’s budget is for student financial aid. Fortunately, our plans for the MDiv Plus, in cooperation with Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, and the enhanced emphasis on leadership and vocational formation in our core curriculum have come at the right time to assist students in areas of institutional and personal budgeting and financial management.

As I visit with you, our friends and alums, it is clear that you share our commitment to this significant work. I hear you asking the ancient question from Isaiah: Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? This annual report reflects ways we at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary are answering this question. You also will find here the names of individuals, congregations, denominational bodies, and grantors who have made a difference for the future.

We are especially grateful that our Council of Laity grew this year from 54 church volunteers to volunteers representing 80 churches across 10 annual conferences. These volunteers are helping to tell the Garrett-Evangelical story in their local churches and invite financial support. If you would like to join our Council of Laity, I would love to hear from you! • graduate 72 masters and doctoral students who took positions as pastors, Christian educators, missionaries, and chaplains,

• establish 24 new named endowment funds, including 17 scholarship funds, 5 unrestricted funds, 1 field education fund, and 1 faculty chair fund,

• provide scholarship assistance totaling $2 million to deserving students,

• host several key conferences for alums and friends on preaching, bioethics, Korean American theology, and church/state relations,

• strengthen curriculum offerings in global Christianity and world religions,

• offer a new Fit to Lead program to help students get healthy and stay healthy physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, and financially,

• conclude the year with a balanced budget, and add $3.4 million to the endowment,

• surpass the $57 million mark in the seminary’s $60 million Forging Our Future campaign.

The Endowment Campaign forGarrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary

Update as of June 30, 2009

Dear Friends,

During the 2008-09 fiscal year, Garrett-Evangelical met the challenge of extraordinary times and a difficult national economic environment, bringing the seminary’s operating expenses in line with its overall revenue expectations. This commitment to live within a balanced budget framework benefited greatly from the discipline established in previous years. I am happy to report that cost savings were achieved across the board, and because of this, we were able to end the year with a small operational net surplus. I am grateful to each of our department heads for “a job well done.”

Our financial practices have reflected our long-held belief in the importance of being good stewards of the tuition and gifts entrusted to us. We have been conservative in projecting revenue, knowing that everyone has felt the impactof the current economic downturn. We have maintained our spending policy of drawing only 5% from the endowment for “current expense.” Moving forward, we will closely monitor our revenue and spending, making adjustments as needed. We have worked closely with our investment advisors and finance committee to achieve acceptable portfolio performance in this difficult market.

Our financial position remains strong despite the decline in our investment balances that have resulted from the economic downturn. The good news has been that, in the last two quarters, a modest turn-around in the market has resulted in the recovery of approximately $5.6 million in investment value. Our endowment value was slightly more than $68 million as of June 30, 2009.

IRA Charitable Rollover Extended Through 2009The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act provides that in 2009 an owner of a traditional or Roth IRA who is 70.5 or older

may instruct the trustee of the IRA to distribute to a qualified charity up to $100,000 without the distribution being included in taxable income, and that the distribution will count toward the IRA owner’s mandatory withdrawal amount.
