The 2017 AGA AWARDS REVIEW highlights industry specific awards and recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the natural gas industry. The recipients are formally recognized at AGA’s Annual Operations Conference. The selection process is based on criteria involving professional and personal commitment and dedication to improving the operations and engineering sectors of the natural gas industry through safety, accident prevention, research, and active AGA committee and event participation. MERITORIOUS

SERVICE AWARD The AGA Meritorious Service Award, is presented each year to the "individual who has performed the most meritorious act in the gas industry in saving a human life during the prior calendar year." This year, AGA is proud to honor Michael Garcia and Miguel Hernandez of Pacific Gas & Electric .

What began as a routine meter maintenance job at a San Jose home turned into a rescue mission for Gas Control Technician, Michael Garcia and Measurement and Control Mechanic, Miguel Hernandez when smoke started billowing out of the house across the street, prompting the two PG&E workers to grab a fire extinguisher from their truck and pull an elderly man out of the destroyed home.

Mike and Miguel arrived on Turnberry Place in south San Jose late in the afternoon. While they were setting up, Miguel said he could smell smoke and figured he should check it out.

Initially thinking it might be a fireplace or a barbecue, he soon noticed the smoke was low to the ground. Then he heard a cry for help and immediately grabbed the fire extinguisher from the truck before setting out to investigate. The cry from help had come from a man whose father had fallen

asleep with the stove on and a fire had started.

Miguel ran to provide assistance and found the man lying by the door. Despite resistance, he knew they must act fast and quickly pulled the man from the home. Mike and Miguel put the elderly man on their kneeling pads close to the sidewalk, where neighbors took care of him and called 911. Then the two men split up and evacuated the homes on either side of the burning house.

Mike said he began going door to door to inform the neighbors of the fire and to get them to safety. The fire had already spread to a tree between the two houses. About that time, firefighters arrived.

Quick action, and a calm demeanor under pressure, saved a life that day and it’s those qualities - seen so often in our industry - that we celebrate today in recognizing Michael and Miguel with this year’s Meritorious Service Award.
