Winnin g Tea m 2009 Univer si ty of Wa terloo
University of Waterloo Formula Motorsports won the award for outstanding use of CFDat Formula SAE Michigan 2009.
The team used of CFD to optimize the air flow restrictor design for the teams engineintake system.
For the 2009 FSAE competition, the Waterloo team set out to improve the airflowthrough their intake restrictor to help optimize combustion in the cars engine.
Using CFD software, the team compared results for pressure recovery for three designs(their original design and two alternatives), hoping to maximizepressure recovery while still remaining within the
FSAE regulations. CFD simulation resulted in afinal design that improved pressure recovery by 4%and eliminated flow separation in the divergingsection of the restrictor.

What If?
W inning Team 2008 Georgia Tech Motorsports
Georgia Tech Motorsports at FSAE 2008 for his excellent use of CFD to effectively re-designan intake manifold.
At the heart of the design challenge was the teams decision to use an Aprilia SXV 550 V-Twin engine, which is both smaller and lighter than its predecessor.
Correctly fit and adequately supply air by naturally-aspirated means to the V-Twin Engine Restrictor must be no larger than 20mm in diameter Predictable engine performance (i.e., reduction in throttle lag, bogging, etc.) Mass flow rate difference between cylinders for air and fuel supply should be within 5% Runners should facilitate optimal fuel mixing for the upper injectors Plenum to runner transition should be facilitated through a smooth interface to reduce turbulence and stagnation
Team relied solely on the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics software to design andvalidate a new intake manifold within a very compressed schedule.

Blue Ridge Numer ics Renew s the CFdesign CollegiateCompetition
Japheth Learn, Lead Aerodynamics Engineer, Rochester Institute ofTechnology Formula SAE Racing Team explains RIT continues to dovery well in the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)competitions. By using CFdesign simulation software we are able toimprove the design of key vehicle components giving our team a criticalcompletive edge. With hard work and CFdesign, this years FormulaRIT team achieved an impressive fifth place out of over 100
competing universities.
