Interacting with employees to create more productive peopleNot content with just designing and building Sky’s new intranet, we set out to create something to lead the way. We developed an effective business tool delivering corporate messages, showcasing Sky’s own content and providing interactive feedback channels.
While making publishing content as easy as possible for editors, we never lost sight of its ultimate users, the people who work at Sky. So an intuitive and streamlined interface, easy searching, quick links (customizable), my department’s news feed, voting widgets, company blogs and feedback channels were also essential components.
Connecting
Intranets offer a channel for both businesses and employees to share, collaborate and improve communications. For us, they also provide a great opportunity to connect people to a brand, creating two way conversations and interactivity in a way not achievable otherwise.

The problem of engaging fi eld teams was solved when we
designed and built the Sky Engineers’ extranet, enabling
them to access the latest documentation securely from
anywhere. As a result, the communication lines between
managers and their teams and from engineer to engineer
were opened up, building a real sense of community at both
a local and national level that had not existed previously.
With 5000 downloads a week and 85% active users,
the most popular feature of the extranet is the ideas and
knowledge forum. With around 1000 new posts a week, it’s
hard to keep up!
Connectingwith peoplein the fi eld
Communicating to remote workers can be a problem. However,
an extranet offers a secure channel, which can be viewed as an
extension of a company’s intranet. This allows controlled access
from the outside from anywhere, and creates a connection with
a company’s brand.
QinetiQ knew their existing intranet needed to do much
more. By evaluating the current content and through close
partnership with QinetiQ’s build team, Avvio planned,
designed, and created an engaging resource which is now
a living part of the business.
By bridging the gap between the internal communications
team and the developers we were able to integrate QinetiQ’s
new internal brand identity with the content making
the messaging easier and quicker to absorb. To ensure
functionality and improve navigation, the architecture utilised
relevant aspects of SharePoint 2010, to optimise search
options and control future updates.
The new site – Nucleus – is now a multi-faceted hub for
everyone to learn, network, share and collaborate across the
business. All in all a more vibrant and engaging place to be.
