 An artist keeps a sketchbook as a type of journal or record of their creative works and thought processes. It can include brainstorming, visual resources and sources of inspiration, planning work and experimentations, feedback and assessment notes as well as final critiques and personal reflections.   Each page in the sketchbook is like a work of art in that it is balanced, unified and pleasing to look at.  What does this look like?  Each artist approaches this in a slightly different way.  Here are a few examples of what it could look like: 

  

             

 You will be doing sketchbook MSIP assignments and written analysis this semester in a sketchbook created just for you.  The first step is create your sketchbook. The cover of your sketchbook is going to give you the opportunity to show your pen and ink drawing skills to create 3D form as well as your personality through your choice of layered material to create a good composition.  Your cover is made of a material that is sturdy and on which you can draw.  However, you can layer different types of materials on this cover to create an interesting and unique surface on which to draw objects that you 

feel represent you.  These could be objects that represent memories from your past or they could be symbolic of something about you.  You must also include your name or your initials  on the cover somewhere for identification.  Step 1:  Using 1 sheet of the white sketchbook pages, brainstorm ideas of what you could use as images on your cover.  Remember that you have to create a good composition but that does not necessarily mean covering the entire surface in images.  It is mandatory that at least ½ of the surface of each cover must be covered in images and hand lettering. You can choose how you will layout the design of the cover to 

accomplish this.  You may only USE COPYRIGHT IMAGES (ie: cartoon characters, logos, etc…) if you find a source and reference where you got the image from. Your drawing can be loosely based on images that already exist but these must be your own original drawings. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOUR IMAGES INCLUDE SHADING (a change in value to create form).  Step 2:  Print off and glue onto the back of the first sheet of sketchbook paper images that your are going to use to draw from.  Include brief descriptions as to why you chose these images and what they represent about you.  Step 3:  On a second sheet of sketchbook paper, complete a minimum of 2 thumbnail layouts of what you could do to create a balanced composition on your cover.  Remember that your cover has 2 pieces, the front and the back.  Think about how these pieces will work together and how you can unify them.  Step 4:  On the back of the second sheet, glue small samples of any materials that you are going to attach to the cover and include brief descriptions of why you are going to use them.You must use a minimum of 2 different materials (eg: tissue paper, newspaper, wallpaper, etc…). Remember that these materials must be able to be drawn on in ink so if you need to experiment in order to see if they will work, this is the place to do it.  Step 5:  Start building!  Think about what needs to be glued on first before you start drawing.  Do any of your drawings have to be drawn on other pieces first before they are glued on?  Think about composition before you glue things down since once they are attached they won’t come off cleanly.  Step 6:  Draw your images. Remember that they must be shaded to look 3D (look back in your notes to what are the areas of a shaded object and how to shade three dimensionally).  Once the ink is done you may choose to add small areas of pencil crayon in order to make your cover reflect you more, help you balance your composition, etc…   Step 7:  Put your book together.  You should have 35 pages of white paper inside your book. Remember to include the 2 pages of creative process on how you create your cover as the first 2 pages.  Use one of the plastic coils to wind through the pre­punched holes.  Ask your teacher to use the special pliers to bend in the two ends of your coil when you are done so that it does not unwind on you.  Step 8:  Self evaluate yourself on how well you think you did on the rubric and answer the self analysis questions.  Hand your sketchbook and the rubric with your self evaluation in to be evaluated.

Pen and Ink Drawing Skills 

Drawing is expressive and detailed. Shapes, patterns, shading and/or texture are used to add interest to the drawing. Student has great control and is able to experiment a little.
