Moving Forward to Serve YouIt is hard to believe that we are already more than halfway through 2019. We are happy to report that your Credit Union is having a great year comprised of exciting changes, growth, and plans

to forge ahead well past next year’s 70th anniversary celebration. On behalf of all of us here at Members 1st, I want to thank you for your ongoing confidence, business and support.

We began the year with the launch of a new Visa Signature® card, which features many enhanced benefits and services, including your choice of either cash back or points rewards. In March, we introduced the innova-tive My Concierge program which is quickly proving to be a game-changer in the local financial services market. This program makes a dedicated concierge Relationship Manager available to help you, on demand, with all aspects of your financial needs.

We held the first Five Generations Advisory Panel session in May. This panel is just one way we engage with a cross-generational mix of members to gain perspective on needs, preferences, and learning styles that span five generations. You can learn more about the panel on pages 8-9.

Soon, you will hear more about moments and milestones, including stories from members and community partners in our outreach and marketing initiatives. On pages 6-7, we feature an article about a local business owner who thrived with the help of our My Concierge service, supported by her strong relationship with our Branch and Relationship Managers. It is our hope that stories like these inspire you to share your story and help motivate other members to reach out to us as well. We are excited to hear from you!

As we approach the fall season, we would like to recognize our members who are

students. Congratulations to the Education Award winners who spent the summer with us gaining valuable work experience. Their stories appear on page 5.

Focusing on your digital experience will continue to be a main initiative as we round out the year. In the months to come, you will experience many new and exciting digital banking enhancements. Additionally, we recently hired a new Digital Marketing team which will have the privilege of telling your unique stories and interacting with members in innovative ways. You can meet this new team on page 13.

Aside from being your financial institution, did you know that Members 1st is a great place to work? As an employer of choice, we are always looking to hire the best possible candidates to serve you. The Associate Experience team has implemented more enhanced benefits and new programs to enrich our overall work-culture. We invite you to attend upcoming Hiring Events.

In the previous issue of Avenues, we announced our intent to build a new head-quarters campus. We are pleased to report that the Hampden Township Commissioners unanimously approved the next stages of this initiative. While we remain in our due dili-gence phase, we are excited to be one step closer to realizing the potential of consoli-dating our administrative operations into one building for increased efficiency and as a way to better use resources for your benefit.

Please remember that your Credit Union is here to help you through the moments and milestones of your life. Keep in mind that as a member, you are an owner. Together, we have built Members 1st into what it is today, and together, we will make your Credit Union even better for generations to come.

Thank you.

Journey to SuccessQ & A with Sarah Barr

OWNER, KONHAUS PRINT & MARKETING

Several years ago, Sarah Barr could never have dreamed that she would be a successful busi-

ness owner and leader of a group of employees. But in January, she took ownership of a successful 28-year-old business, after being an employee there for eight years. Read below to discover how, in Sarah’s words, Members 1st played a part in her story and success.

How long have you been employed at Konhaus? What was your first role?I started as the Results Specialist (business development) with Konhaus in September 2010.

Tell us your story about the transition to owner. I love what I do. I never dreamed of

becoming an owner. I’ve always genuinely enjoyed my job, the people I work with, and the clients I help on a daily basis. It made sense when the opportunity presented itself to consider this opportunity for my future. Were you apprehensive? What were your biggest fears? Yes! Yes! Yes! I don’t have a formal college education, so I had a lot self-doubt at first. Did I really have in me what it takes to become a business owner? Could I become a good leader for my employees?

What role did/does Members 1st play in your story? Members 1st has supported me from the very second I started thinking about buying the company. I was involved with the banking transition from another financial institution several years ago

when the business originally switched to Members 1st. I knew I was going to keep my business with them. I went to my local branch and met with the Branch Manager who then connected me with my Relationship Manager. Both have been indispensable in our success, making sure I have the right products based on my needs, and all the right information based on my goals.

Are there specific credit union products and services that you rely on regularly?Remote Deposit Capture has been wonderful and has saved us so much time. We can process our checks right in our office and not even have to worry about running anywhere to complete a deposit.

Have any specific asso-ciates helped you from a relationship/concierge standpoint?Scott Schultz, my Relationship Manager, has been great, along with Jacinda Cooper, Branch Manager. They both are actively

involved in every step of the way, and have helped make the transition into owner-ship a piece of cake in regard to banking matters. I’m so thankful for both of them!

What is your future vision for the company and how will Members 1st play a part in that vision? I couldn’t be happier with my decision to purchase this incredible busi-ness that I believe in so much! Obviously, the goal is to grow. And to add additional products and services that our clients need.

We have a lot of exciting things happening in the future, and although I won’t share all the details right now, I can promise we will continue to inspire ideas to take flight for the small business community. Members 1st will be instrumental in the success of our vision.

What would you tell other business owners about partnering with Members 1st for their financial services? It’s a no brainer to work with Members 1st. They make your life and the entire process easy!

You Speak: We Listen

We asked for applications to participate in member panels, and you responded! Out of over

1,000 applicants, we selected 15 members from across five generations to provide their thoughts and perspectives regarding the expectations of financial products and service delivery.

According to Amanda Shockey-Foster, Marketing Research Analyst, “The purpose of this advisory panel is to connect with members who represent multiple generations. Today’s population is made up of five generations that include Matures/Traditionals, Baby Boomers, Generation X, New Millennials, and Generation Z (Linksters). Each generation has its own uniquely defined character-istics that stem from the historic events they have witnessed or experienced. While

we offer products and services to help all financial needs, how we deliver our messages should be relevant and specific to each generation.”

While many of today’s research panels focus on one generational category such as

millennials, we believe that a multi-faceted, cross-generational mix is a better way to engage with you and use your perspec-tives as a competitive advantage.

“It is truly remark-able how involved our members are and want to be. We appreciate

their feedback. We have amazing members and we are all honored to work for them and their benefit,” said Shockey-Foster.

The panel will meet 2-3 times a year at an off-site location for an hour and a half. The Marketing team will work consistently with the same group throughout the year.

During the meetings, panelists will participate in qualitative research with a moderator guiding the group discussion. Through observation and interviews, we will gain insight into member needs, prefer-ences and learning styles that span five generations.

The advisory panel participants will help us shape the future of Members 1st by helping us think about all of the various ways we can better serve members and build personal relationships as the world around us changes. This provides the opportunity for us to take a step back and identify what opportunities may arise in meeting the needs of today’s consumer. It is important for us, as well as any business, not to make assumptions about what a customer or member wants.

Having in-person conversations with members provides valuable insight. Since we serve five different and distinct generations, there is no room for a one-size-fits-all approach to how we serve members. The panel’s input will help

us create better products, services and delivery channels that you, our members, actually want, not what we think you want.

Want to participate? We are looking for interested members to be considered for participation in our various marketing research panels. Your feedback will help us as we consider new products and services, and will guide us toward enhancing your overall experience when interacting with us. To be considered for future participation, please call us at (800) 283-2328, ext. 5745.

Panel members enjoy a friendly discussion about the part Members 1st plays in their financial lives.

How to Work with a Financial Advisor

A flurry of new investment products, the emergence of global investing, the shift from company-funded

pension plans to employee-driven retire-ment plans (like 401(k) plans), and uncer-tainty about Social Security have all contrib-uted to the increased need for qualified financial advice. No matter what your level of investment experience or sophistication, you may benefit from developing a relation-ship with a financial advisor.

What Is a Financial Advisor?A qualified financial advisor is trained to analyze your personal financial situation and prepare a program designed to help you address your financial goals and objectives. It might be helpful to think of your financial advisor as a kind of doctor for your financial health.

Benefits of Working with a Financial AdvisorMost people can benefit from profes-sional guidance when they venture into the complex and confusing world of managing their financial affairs. A financial advisor will be able to assess your risk tolerance, analyze your resources and current asset allocation, take into account your tax liability, and make investment recommen-dations in the form of a written financial plan that will help you to pursue your goals. The plan may help ensure that your current and future assets are used to their best advantage given your current financial situ-ation and your financial goals.

Building a RelationshipMany events may be catalysts to seek financial help, such as planning for retire-ment, establishing a college fund or even changing jobs, but once you have estab-lished a relationship with a financial advisor, you will probably find a number of other ways you can benefit from working with him/her.

At your first meeting, you and your advisor will identify your financial needs and invest-ment goals. Although it sounds simple, this can be harder than you think. Your advisor will be able to ask you the right questions to help you to determine what your goals are, just in case you aren't sure yourself.

To prepare for your first meeting, call your advisor and ask what specific docu-ments and information you should bring. These may include essential documents such as wills, copies of insurance poli-cies, pension information, and investment account statements. In addition, you should be prepared to discuss the following topics: retirement income and savings, college planning, preparations for the unexpected and estate planning.

After you and your financial advisor have established your investment goals and objectives, your advisor will create a plan for you and review this with you. Among the objectives, the plan may include making sure you have sufficient insurance, that you have cash reserves to meet unexpected financial needs, and that specific short- and long-term goals are provided for. The plan

may also involve reallocating some or all of your assets into more suitable invest-ments that fit your risk tolerance and your investment goals. In addition, the plan will recommend where to invest future assets (regular savings or lump-sum payments), and how much you will need to save to achieve your financial goals.

After you and your advisor have agreed on a plan of action and implemented it, all you need to do is schedule annual financial reviews to make sure the plan works to your satisfaction and that none of your goals have changed over time. And if you have major changes or events in your life, keep your financial advisor informed of these. Some examples include a change in marital status, the birth of a child, a change in income, or receiving an inheritance.

Taking ChargeTo work successfully with a financial advisor, you need to build a solid relation-ship based on trust and mutual respect. And most important, you need to be involved.

A professional financial advisor will help you identify your investment goals and create a plan that may help achieve them. In the years to come, your advisor can become a trusted friend and confidant. And together, you will have implemented a strategy that seeks to maximize the earning power of your assets so that they are working toward creating a more confi-dent financial future for you.

We are pleased to announce the forma-tion of our new Digital Marketing Team: a group of Marketing associates who are taking innovative steps toward driving digital content and engagement with you, our current members, as well as potential members.

Karen Roland, Assistant Vice President of Digital Marketing, oversees the devel-opment of digital content focused on our community outreach, member-told stories, financial education and advice, and prod-ucts and services. In addition, the team will help to support public relations and reputation management efforts.

“No one tells the Members 1st story better than real members. We receive countless stories and feedback from members every

day about how we have helped to make their lives better in some way — big or small,” said Roland. “When you consider how much time we all spend on digital devices, it was clear to us that we have to build our content across digital channels to better reach and engage our members and potential members.”

In addition to Roland, team members include Kyle Cooper, Marketing Technology Coordinator and Sarah Scholl, Digital Marketing Coordinator. Both Cooper and Scholl will be working in tandem to develop and produce media for social and digital channels featuring real members, member businesses and community partners.

As technology continues to grow, story-telling is an essential tool for developing relationships in today’s world. We will solicit stories from members and commu-nity partners through a variety of means including personal interactions with members and story referrals.

Members may also submit their stories about their experiences with us using the online submission form available at members1st.org/member-stories.
