History

A quick trip from L.A., Palm Springs was truly born as a weekend getaway for industry players and Hollywood stars when a “two-hour rule” kept contract actors on a very short leash. Built in 1929 by Frank Pershing amid an enclave of pink grapefruit, ficus, and palm trees, the original Estrella Motor Inn became an iconic part of this first golden age (along with the lounge acts at the neighboring Chi Chi Club). Red-carpet entry to the bungalows was common for faces like Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Errol Flynn. (Crawford famously demanded French bread and 7 packs of cigarettes in hers.)
