2016 – Developments of the production hallThe steadily increasing product orders lead to another large investment of NIVELCO. The production department expanded with a new 1000 m2 hall and the development moved to a completely renovated more than 500 m2 building area with modern offices and labours. Furthermore, the old obsolete finished goods warehouse completely demolished, and a new six-meter-high 140 m2 modern warehouse built.

Well, so many important things happened in the last 5 years at NIVELCO. We hope that five years later we can report such accomplishments in the columns of the NIVELCO Magazine.

10

At the beginning of this year’s summer shutdown in the 22nd of July we have left behind the production hall with a similar goodbye like we did back in 2014 and went on a 2-week holiday. We blanketed and pulled together the workstations and the machines to make enough room for the construction workers. They started to continue the modernizing works started in 2014 to expand the modern, renewed external and internal for the entire building while we spent our well deserved holiday. We also had to provide temporary accommodation for the packing machines and the stock warehouse which has been reborn from the ashes like the legendary Phoenix bird. The entire structure was demolished to the ground and a larger,

modern warehouse was built above the substructure. The development department moved to a completely renovated 500 m² area with comfortable offices and laboratories. The demolition work started in their former place too. We got some area from them, but the larger part an approximately 700 m² new floor was constructed above our mechanical workstations including the metalworking area. Overall the production hall has been expanded with approximately 1000 m² new area which includes changing rooms and social rooms providing more comfort for the employees. Furthermore the building received new exterior insulation, new plastic windows and doors.

11

Returning from the 2-week vacation all of us were shocked that how many changes happened on NIVELCO’s appearance. The interior works in the new hall did not interfere with the production processes so the construction work and the manufacturing could went on smoothly in parallel. The stock warehouse moved back into their old place but into a new environment so the customer’s service is back to normal. The most important fact about the new warehouse is the shelving and storage rack system reaching up to 8 m interior height. This way the surface of the storage shelves increased from 110 m² to 230 m² in the renewed warehouse.

The stored packages and packing materials became more transparent because the product categories can be separated more easily. The shelves on the top can be reached from a loft floor by stairs so the loading of the selves can be done safely and manually without using a forklift. This loft floor created enough space for the marketing materials such as brochures or product catalogues which were stored previously at an outside storage room.

The new warehouse offers place for up to 50 pallets, earlier this number was only 18. This way the storage of the prepared packages is more optimal and we don’t have to lend space from the production area where these oversized packages were previously waiting for delivery. The spacious preparing area in the warehouse provides more safety for machine aided material movement. The higher ceiling allows that the long devices such as a rod extended instruments can be stored as standing packages saving additional space for the large collection boxes and other special packages. The ongoing works have been allowed to see the size and light conditions of the new production hall giving points for a lot of brainstorming about designing the layout of the manufacturing processes and the arrangement of the new workstations. Our SMD section will receive a larger area because it has already proven that we underestimated the increased needs in the 2014 expansion. We also plan to move the electronic components store closer to the SMD operators reducing the material route. We move-in to the new floor upstairs continuously which gives us the opportunity to place the equipment in a bigger area considering the subsequently growing number of the staff. Our metalworking section will also be expanded with two new CNC machines in the freed ground floor space. In the second half of 2016 our slogan became “planning, moving, working”, because these three actions are characterizing our daily life. I can say on the behalf of all workers of the production department it’s really good to see the renewed working environment, the modernizations and it’s wonderful to be a part of NIVELCO’s history. What we are creating now that will be used by the NIVELCO workers of the following times.

12

As a preliminary step of the major construction works taking place at NIVELCO in the summer of 2016 the development department moved to newer, more comfortable and more modern premises within our headquarters in Újpest, Budapest. This step was required because our previously used offices were planned to be captured by construction machineries in order to accomplish a complete renovation.

Although the original plans were totally different, due to a significant change in the rented offices at NIVELCO Trade Center, in December 2015 we were given the slight, uncertain and by no means definitive possibility to move out of our offices that we have used (and certainly worn-out) since decades. We have definitely outgrown the available space and it was hardly suitable for further expansion. When we talked about this option with Péter and Tamás Szőllős at the corporate Christmas dinner, I really liked the idea but at that time I couldn’t imagine that only after five months later in my future office I receive the questions: “Where should the wall outlets be placed and which way should the door be opened”. Nevertheless, it happened exactly like that…Together with the company management and with my colleagues, we designed the division of the available space and every step of the necessary modifications with the precision expected from engineers. This was needed because the previous occupiers were an administration staff and their management team so the area was customized for the needs absolutely not ideal for developers. There were small and large meeting rooms and crowded offices for too many people with really small space between the desks.

The small workplaces had hardly enough space for a laptop and perhaps a few sheets of paper. It was obvious that the space will be suitable for a development department (especially for developing measurement instruments) only after significant modification.I followed the basic rule which says "Never change a running system" and tried to keep the well-proven and traditional method so the new rooms were designed typically for two, three or up to five people.

Although there are many different testing labs available for the colleagues, the primary consideration about the design of the workplaces was to provide possibility for the engineers to be able to perform as many measurement tasks as possible by sitting at their own desk. This way there is no development workstation without the well proven “oscilloscope-multimeter-power supply” instrument trio and there is still enough remaining space for a soldering station along with the computer and the papers.

A little statistics with figures and dates from the development department:Staff: 24 employees Youngest member: 21 yearsOldest member: 68 yearsAverage age: 48 years

13

In addition, each workstation is equipped with an independently supplied three-phase mains wall outlet panel and a low-voltage “magical black-box” connected variably in star or daisy chain network topology dedicated mainly for testing wired communication. Besides the appropriate layout and arrangement of the workplaces, it was also an important aspect to create the instrument rack structure. Unfortunately, this important practical aspect imposed a problem for the availability.

Luckily, one of our furniture supplier partners solved this challenge really quickly and now I can say that all the custom designed and manufactured furniture are done in high quality meeting our expectations. The rooms of the developers were indeed furnished with their usability and inspiring appearance as they appeared on the computer simulations.

Moving from one side of the building to another one seemed an easy job for us, theoretically we only had to stand up from the old desks and walk to the new completely furnished offices within NIVELCO’s headquarter. However, this easiness was slightly faded out by the quantity, size and in some cases the weight of the instruments and test equipment such as climate chambers, measuring rack systems or the TEM (Transverse Electromagnetic Mode) cell, but overall we solved this problem as we always do at NIVELCO: quickly and with the precision expected from engineers. We really needed to hurry to keep the plan because only a couple of days later hammer drills, hydraulic rock drills and many more kinds of demolition equipment started their work in our former offices. At the moment we only have to beautify the new offices and make them more homelike. On the corridor there are archive (many of them are handmade with traditional ink) project documentations, design drawings and technology descriptions framed and hanging on the walls, because the development department is still regarded as a prohibited zone for visitors. These decorations are closer to our hearts than any of the well-known marketing posters which can be seen in the rest of NIVELCO buildings.

The Hungarian Paralympic Team was remarkably successful in the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Hungarian Team finished the Paralympic competition with a total of 18 medals, 1 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze. With this result earned the respectable 47th place on the medals table among the 162 participating countries. Hungary’s gold medal was won by Tamás Tóth in the 100 m backstroke swimming race in the ninth day of competition.

Gyöngyi Dani a multiple Paralympic medalist is supported for many years now by NIVELCO. In 2016 she represented our country as an individual competitor and as a member of the Hungarian Wheelchair Fencing Women's Épée Team and Foil Team. Although as an individual competitor she has not achieved a podium result this year, but in team she achieved a prominent place in both competitions. In the Épée team she won bronze medal in Thursday with Zsuzsanna Krajnyák and Amarilla Veres. In the semi-finals they met with Hong Kong, where the rival team made it to the finals. In the bronze match the Hungarians competed with Poland, and after a tremendous battle they won by 45:44.

The time came for the rematch very soon in Friday since in the Foil team events the Hungarian team – including Gyöngyi and Zsuzsanna together again and Éva Hajmási – had to fence against Hong Kong once again in the semi-final. Finally after great excitement with the close results they have beaten Hong Kong by 41:40 and qualified into the final and met with the Chinese team.At the beginning of the final our team quickly gained a considerable disadvantage and then they were unable to approach the Asian team. Finally Hungary lost against the China and the final result was 45:34. This way Gyöngyi Dani and Zsuzsanna Krajnyák could put a silver medal next to their bronze into the collection.NIVELCO Process Control Co. the sponsor of the Hungarian Team congratulates and wishes further successes to our competitors!

In the previous issues of the NIVELCO Magazine we were really pleased to inform our readers about the continuous technological developments ensuring not only the constant improvement of our products but generating systematic and visible changes in the production or in the quality control departments. This year’s remarkable improvement for NIVELCO is to put a laser engraving machine into operation in the production department which will find its final place only after the deadline of our Magazine, in the newly established production hall upstairs.

In order to perfectly meet the specific requirements of NIVELCO, buying the laser light emitting module, the engraving head unit and the controlling computer rack was only the beginning. Beyond this step the entire housing which functions as a laser protecting enclosure has been designed and manufactured in-house. The central element of the equipment is the fiber laser – supplied by SPI, the leading manufacturer of fiber lasers – with 20 Watt nominal power emitting 1064 nm wavelength laser beam. The numberless types of fully custom made positioning parts provide that the components to be engraved will be placed always in the same location inside the machine. These positioning parts can be placed in a drawer which can be pulled out from the equipment really easy so the change of the work-pieces can be made really quickly. The up and down movement of the laser head is controlled electronically by a stepper motor thereby the rapid and precise transition is provided for marking components with different height.

When very long components should be engraved the side doors of the enclosure can be opened and the steel supporting structure of the machine is equipped with wheels to provide mobility. The laser marked data plates of the normal instruments are made from blue anodized aluminum and stainless steel plates are used in case of Ex-type units. When aluminum plates are engraved the anodized top layer is removed creating the appropriate marking and in case of the stainless steel plates the marking is literally burnt into the surface. In addition to the aesthetic appearance these data plates are much more precise, legible and time-resistant compared to the previously used mechanically engraved data plates.Besides data plates all the previously pad printed texts on the instruments such as the warning messages on the flameproof (Ex d) paint coated aluminum housings. Likewise the type numbers and serial numbers on the NIVOPRESS N submersible level switches, the ‘UP’ marks on the floats of the NIVOTRACK magnetostrictive level transmitters or the pressure ratings on the MFF type counter-flanges of the NIVOMAG magnetic float level switches are also laser engraved. Not only on metal parts but the labels on the electronics covers which are made from ABS plastic are also manufactured with laser engraving.

The machining time spent on engraving the required texts onto the NIVELCO instruments significantly reduced since 8 standard size data plates can be engraved at the same time. In the future we will apply this modern solution to replace all the previously screen- or pad printed texts on our instruments. This change takes place continuously but step by step and this change affects all NIVELCO instruments.

Celebrating Employee Anniversary at NIVELCO10th of June 2016, ócsa, Hungary

NIVELCO Process Control Company celebrates its existence, results and the successes year by year and of course the company management doesn’t forget about the employees who are behind the remarkable performance. This family evening is organized annually every summer, sometimes at the headquarters of NIVELCO, in other years at external locations. The invited people are not only the workers but the close family members and the retired ex-colleagues are also welcomed. In June 2016 we gathered in a hunting ranch where wine tasting and hunting demonstration were the main attractions of the program before we continued the evening with traditional Hungarian dishes and the music party. In the previous years this usual event was held in various locations, we enjoyed the spectacular scenery of the Danube on a pleasure-boat, visited the Budapest Railway Museum or took a walking tour in Dobogókő and climbed up to the highest point of the Visegrád Hills.Nowadays this kind of strong loyalty is no longer usual between employees and employers, but NIVELCO still remains one of the few honourable exceptions. Nothing proves it better than the below list of my colleagues who are working at NIVELCO for 5–10–15–20 and even 25 years. Mr. Tamás Szőllős, president and CEO highlighted in his annual evaluating speech that according to his experience if a colleague holds on for 5 years in this company; he/she becomes a part of this family and doesn’t want to leave and work for another company. There are many people at NIVELCO who agree with this, including me. Here is the list of the colleagues who celebrated their 5–10–15–20 or 25 years work anniversary in this year. Congratulations to them and thanks for the long years service of NIVELCO.

We are pleased to announce that after extensive testing and effort, NIVELCO Process Control Company has received the FM (Factory Mutual) and CSA (Canadian Standards Association) Approvals Certificate of Conformity for Classified Location Electrical Equipment for both United States and Canadian Requirements.

The NIVOTRACK M-500 series magnetostrictive level transmitters are now suitable for installation in Class I, Zone 1, AEx db IIB T6...T5 Gb Ta = -40°C to +70°C, IP67. Zone 1 is generally con sidered to be an equal location approval to the well known Class I, Div 2 areas, referring to explosive gasses and vapors being present occasionally, but not continuously.

This includes a newly developed dual compartment unit and 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) resolution.

The dual chamber housing construction has the advantage over the standard single chamber version that the wiring connection points are placed in a separate chamber, separated from all the other parts of the electronics, so it’s entirely explosion proof. There are no internal intrinsically safe barriers/circuitry.

Full details can be found in the FM16US0068X and FM16CA0037X certificates which can be downloaded from NIVELCO’s website.

NIVOTRACK is not the only instrument family involved in FM and CSA certification procedure. The next product within NIVELCO’s product portfolio is NIVOSWITCH vibrating fork level switch which has received Approvals Certificate of Conformity for Classified Location Electrical Equipment for both United States and Canadian Requirements.

The new NIVOSWITCH RN-400 series have flameproof (Ex d) aluminum die cast housing with the warning message that doesn’t allowed to open when the instrument is energized. The unauthorized opening of the cover is protected by a safety clamp which is fixed with two hex socket screws. More details about the NIVOSWITCH RN-400 series level switches will be presented in the next issue of our Magazine.

TIBOR KOVáCS CEO

MICROWELL spol.

[email protected]

MICROWELL, NIVELCO’s distributor since 1991Interview with Tibor Kovács

This year MICROWELL and NIVELCO celebrated the 25th anniversary of the cooperation between the two companies. How this long success story began?

It seems it might have happened only yesterday and not two and a half decades ago. It was 1991 and “the winds of change” swept through all over Eastern Europe.Back than NIVELCO was already a respected, internationally known company, but MICROWELL did not exist as an established company. One day two gentlemen came into the DUSLO chemical company plant near Šal'a in the former Czechoslovakia to install the purchased ultrasonic level transmitters.

The use of measurement technology fell under the competence of the department where I worked at those times. Until then I met mostly with salesman speaking German or English so I have been very pleasantly surprised that there is a Hungarian company in Budapest which is only a two-hour drive from Šal'a. There is no denying we had a sense of national togetherness from the first time. The so far hiding pride came to the surface, that Hungarians are not only good at growing paprika but able to produce technically lasting, valuable instruments. In the autumn of 1991 NIVELCO invited me to the first international partner meeting in Budapest. I still have that 25 year old slowly fading photo which was made in the goulash party at the end of the meeting. I can say this meant a milestone in my life. Back than even my – now slightly grey-headed, deeply honourable – friends in this photo couldn’t imagine that there will be 25 more years. And if so, what will it be? Now I can say it was worth it!

We can say that the two companies steadily progressed side by side?

Certainly we can. NIVELCO always guaranteed a strong point, a reliable partner and a friendly relation ship for MICROWELL but I think the same is true vice versa. The spoken words have been always sufficient. Our relationship has not been charged, not conducted by contracts with small prints. As the owner of MICROWELL I always knew that NIVELCO is more for me/us than just livelihood. It’s an ally in a battle where the opponent is the distrust, or should I say disdain. The truth is that ’Made in Hungary’ inscription didn’t sound very well in Slovakia in the nineties. That's why it was the sweetest victory when we reap technical triumph against internationally recognized well-known companies playing in whole other league. These were wonderful years.

Yes, it can be said that the two companies have progressed steadily side by side. We know the numbers, but those are just only numbers. Mutual learning and inspiration are the real driving force behind development. As a small company you cannot learn too much from a big, gigantic company, because the problems you are facing are totally different.

When companies became equal in scale over time they could learn a lot from each other. They can take over each other 's experience and proven methods. Well, exactly this happened in this case.

Page 21: AUTUMN–WINTER EDITION // 2016/2 - Nivelcodl.nivelco.com/webnews/nivma16a0614.pdf · to provide up-to-date real-time information about ... of certain industry segments such as Food

21

Which is the most successful NIVELCO product on the MICROWELL’s market?

The answer is clear, NIVELCO’s ultrasonic devices. From 1991 about 4.800 ultrasonic level transmitters were installed in Slovakia where the population is 5.4 million people. Our country definitely in the top three position in the point of ultrasonic level transmitters per citizens, even in global level, but I don't exclude the possibility that we're the first. Within the ultrasonic category the open channel flow meters placed in the prime with nearly 1.600 installed units over the years.

Could you highlight a memorable event from the last 25 years which comes to your mind when NIVELCO is mentioned?

It would be very difficult to pick out only one, so I'd say immediately three. The first was a several days long ultrasonic level meters installation in Ostrava. It was back in 1992 with the service technicians of NIVELCO led by Károly Juhász development engineer. Practically it was the first and the last assembly where the technicians of the two companies worked together for multiple days. It was an unforgettable experience.

The other moment I should mention is when NIVELCO's management team told me: from the first of January 1994, MICROWELL will be NIVELCO's exclusive Slovakian distributor. It was the result of a one and a half year long hard work and MICROWELL was so inspired that after this event we won the proud title of NIVELCO TOP partner six more times.

The third memorable story is related to sports, especially to football. Since 1996 two teams competed twice a year. The first historic match was played in 1996, in Budapest in the ground right next to NIVELCO’s headquarter where the track of the driving school is located today. It's been twenty years ago! I still clearly remember it was a sparkling match but the final result was a goalless draw. Then in October in the rematch in Šal'a NIVELCO showed better performance and they made certain victory. Then in the next two years MICROWELL suffered a series of defeats. Until in 1999 – as a result of hard training – the long-awaited first victory of MICROWELL finally came in home field in the High Tatras camp.

As I close these lines the new/old memories are already crowding in my mind. As I look back over the past 25 years, I can say it was not only a long time but also eventful. I wish further continuity and mutual attention for both companies which characterized the last years.

Stone crushing and asphalt plant in Sweden27 EchoTREKs for solids

JONAS ERICSON NIHLSTORPCEO

Afriso Ema AB [email protected]

Since Afriso Ema AB has became the exclusive distributor of NIVELCO Process Control Co. in Sweden the successful cooperation resulted in more installed NIVELCO instruments in Sweden than ever before. The highlighted items of this success are the members of EchoTREK STD/SBD-300 series ultrasonic level transmitters for solids applied in the construction materials industry.

In case of level measurement of solid materials such as crushed stone with various granular sizes, the coning or arching is a general feature caused by the filling and emptying process. This effect needs to be carefully considered in order to achieve appropriate level measurement. Optimising the aiming by the SAA-102 joystick – which is an integrated part of the EchoTREK STD/SBD 300 series transmitters – is really advantageous in these situations.

The other challenging circumstance is dust what is unavoidable at a stone crushing and asphalt plant, like in the outside of Malmö, Sweden where 27 EchoTREK level transmitters for solids are installed.

Equipped in 15–30 m (50–100 ft) high silos in very dusty environment, besides high acoustic noises and strong vibrations the ultrasonic level transmitters work reliably and are credible sources of information about the stored amount of crushed stone in the silos.Even if the material is a bigger size stone or a fine powder the EchoTREK STD/SBD-300 series ultrasonic level transmitters are ideal for the measurement task. The incorporated SPDT relay output provides high alarm indication in order to avoid any possible overfill.

MicroTREK transmitters in EstoniaStandel, the Estonian distributor of NIVELCO

The main business for Standel AS is selling control and automation products and representing respected manufacturers from these industry areas. We are the exclusive distributor of NIVELCO Process Control Company for more than 15 years and the successful cooperation between the two companies is strongly strengthened during these years. We are proud that Standel is among the TOP 25 buyer of NIVELCO in each and every year. In the Estonian market NIVELCO products are really attractive due to the excellent price/performance ratio and the 3-year general warranty. The versatile product portfolio offers measurement solution for almost all kinds of industry demands and the HART communication capable smart field transmitters can be easily integrated into higher level automation systems.

Our goal is to provide customized solutions for our customers. We are engineers and our business objective is to meet clients’ requirements. Standel’s product range is very wide and there are a many different kinds of industrial automation equipment.

Our customer, the Estonian domestic capital based Napal AS was founded in 1993. The company’s main business areas are installation and servicing of heating equipment. Napal have built, renovated and commissioned more than 1500 MW boiler houses capacities – steam boiler-houses, district heating boiler-houses and thermal oil boiler-houses.

Thermal oil boiler-houses are using petroleum products which are replacing the less economical steam boiler plants. In these thermal oil boiler houses there are more than 40 NIVELCO manufactured high temperature type MicroTREK guided wave level transmitters used for monitoring and control thermal oil level in different height and shaped oil tanks.

Gaining such a high market share made possible for Napal AS to run high quality 24-hour service system. By 2008, the number of service sites had been risen to a level (at the moment there are more than 100 sites), which required establishment of the separate company. This means more new oil tanks to be established and we hope this will result in more MicroTREK transmitters operating in Estonia in the future.

Carbon disulphide (CS2) is heavy colourless liquid with an offensive odour, capable of ignition. Its low flash point (-43 °C), its wide explosive range in air (1.3 to 50%), boiling point is 46 °C & its ignition temperature is about 102 °C make it a particularly explosive & hazardous substance. It is volatile at ordinary temperature. It is however inert to most of the metals, ceramics, glass & it is completely stable in steel vessels. The instrumentation task for NIVELCO Instruments India Pvt. Ltd. was Interface Level Measurement for CS2 storage tank at Grasim Sellulosic Division (Aditya Birla Group), Vilayat, Gujarat; India. Requirement from the client was for Level Transmitter for 2 storage tanks of CS2 and the height of each tank was 9450 mm (31 ft).

Storage of CS2:Carbon disulphide is generally stored under water in tanks, as it is heavier than water [density: 1.539 g/ cm3 (-186 °C), 1.2927 g/cm3 (0 °C), 1.266 g/cm3 (25 °C)] as well as insoluble in water at normal temperature. It is insensitive to the shock so long as no oxygen is present, Vapors are readily ignited, and the heat of a common light bulb may suffice. Therefore, except when in original containers in small quantities, it should be kept blanketed with inert gas or water at all the times for the storage of large quantities in vessels or tanks.

Criticality in Level MeasurementCS2 is so reactive that it has to be stored under a layer of water to prevent it from igniting, and the level of the interface between the water and carbon disulphide requires constant monitoring.

The conventional level instruments cannot be considered for this application as it is interface level measurement.

Generally for interface level measurement conventionally Displacer Type Level Transmitter, Capacitance Level Transmitter (limited use) were used or lately Guided Wave Radars (GWR) are used. But all these transmitters could not be applied for various reasons. E.g. Displacer type could not be considered due to tank height as well as practical difficulty in the installation. Capacitance could not be considered because it was difficult to follow calibration procedure practically. While in case of GWR, the application was tricky as the water dielectric constant is approx. 80 while that of CS2 is about only 2.6. Hence for top mounting installations GWR is not suitable for this application as water is on top of carbon disulphide.

NIVOTRACK with cable extended probeThe Magnetostrictive Level Transmitter is most suitable instrument in this application as the density difference of both the liquids is considerable to calculate the desired weight of the float to pass through upper layer of water and float on CS2. The client was using similar instrument, but was facing problems as that instrument was supplied with rigid electrode of 9.5 meters of the length and practically was very difficult to install on the tank from the top.Hence we suggested NIVOTRACK MBK-595-B Ex level transmitter with 0.1 mm accuracy option, with cable extended probe and flameproof (Ex d) aluminium housing. The instruments are working fine and reliably to the satisfaction of the client.

PiloTREK & NIVELCO CK application in RomaniaNIVELCO instruments in the coast of the Black Sea

In the previous (2013/2) issue of our Magazine we have already presented the test phase of the instrumentation project including a PiloTREK WHS-150-4 type Pulse Burst Radar. The test was taken for nearly four month measuring 160 °C (320 °F) bitumen.

The instrument was connected to a data logging capable MultiCONT PRD-210 process controller unit to monitor the measurement data. The test was performed for long months and the measured values were continuously compared with manually measured values by the customer. Thanks to the successful test results the customer was very satisfied and purchased the equipment for further tests in October 2013. Finally after a really long consideration period the long-term customer satisfaction resulted in the order for the complex instrumentation system of the complete bitumen tank farm in August 2015.The end-user SARGEANT MARINE ROMANIA S.R.L. is an England-based company having leading role in the Romanian road construction industry for nearly 20 years considering the amount of produced bitumen. The company’s facility is located in Constant,a in the coast of the Black Sea where the bitumen is stored in 7 high capacity (9000 m3) tanks.

The measurement task was the following: Continuously measure the stored volume in the tanks Temperature measurement in three points inside the tank Providing high fail-safe alarm with sound and visual indication Local displaying of the measurement data Collecting and logging the data in a central computer Volume correction based on the measured temperature

Along with the listed tasks, NIVELCO Tehnica Masurarii done the preparation of the control rack and performed the wiring of the system and the commissioning. The provided solution included the following NIVELCO instruments: PiloTREK WHS-150-4 – 1 unit PiloTREK WJS-182-4 – 6 units THERMOCONT TBC-526-4 – 21 units NIVOCAP CMV-115-1 – 7 units MultiCONT PRD-2MA-1 – 3 units NIPOWER PPK-331-1 – 2 units ADAM-4520 (RS232 to RS422/485 converter module) ARMASONO SH (sound and visual alarm device) NIVISION process visualization system

27

The THERMOCONT temperature sensors are equipped in equal distance, three sensors on each tank within the active measurement range. The high temperature type NIVOCAP CK capacitive level switches are mounted that the probes are sensing if the tank is filled up to 80% and the high temperature type PiloTREK Pulse Burst Radars are continuously measuring the level of the hot bitumen. During filling the tank the NIVOCAP CK level switches send switching signals to the sound and visual alarm devices to warn the personnel to stop the filling. The measured level and temperature values are transferred by HART communication to the 3 MultiCONT PRD-210 controller/display unit and sent on RS485 line to the process control PC running NIVISION.

Processing, storing and displaying of the measured data are done with the NIVISION process visualization software.

Moreover the program calculates precise volume from the measured level values based on the tank dimensions. The compensation of the thermal expansion (to 15 °C (59 °F) as a standard value in this industry) is calculated from the average temperature (based on the currently measured level). The stored amount in the tank is displayed in kilograms which are calculated based on the average density determined by the internal lab. This average density can be entered into the software after each and every filling procedure.

After we have made the necessary fine tuning, slight corrections and final tests, the measurement system was reported as completely finished personally by the owner of the company from England. The new system is now operating for 5 months without any failure to the greatest satisfaction of the local personnel. This way we would like to say thanks for the colleagues at SARGEANT MARINE for their support in providing the required process connections rapidly and for their kind assistance in the wiring and the commissioning part of this successful instrumentation project.

Temperature measurement system in BelgiumNIVISION system for grain silos

Since its launch in 2010 THERMOPOINT multipoint temperature transmitters provide so many success stories for NIVELCO. The transmitter family has dedicated types both for liquids and for solids so the application possibilities are almost endless. The instruments are suitable for tank farms because the measurement values can be easily collected with the help of a MultiCONT multichannel controller/ display unit. In the following application story our readers can read about a temperature measurement system consisting THERMOPOINT temperature transmitters and MultiCONT completed with NIVISION process visualization software. Thanks to the cooperation with RETEC, our Belgian distributor, NIVELCO provided complete instrumentation system for multipoint temperature monitoring and silo fan controlling. The end-user, Centragro scrl. is offering full range of agricultural and gardening products and services for the customers. They wanted to establish a completely new tank park next to the already existing 9 grain silos with a modern temperature measurement solution including PC-based visualization software.

The sent offer included the following units: THERMOPOINT TMH-57E-8 Ex – 8 units THERMOPOINT TMH-57J-8 Ex – 1 unit MultiCONT PEW-2ME-1 – 1 unit ADAM 4520 – RS485/RS232 module ADAM 4056 – RS485/Relay output module for fan control ADAM 4017 – RS485/7 analogue input module for humidity and ambient temperature NIVISION process visualization software

29

The instrumentation task was to continuously measure the medium temperature at multiple points in eight 14 m (46 ft) and one 18 m (59 ft) high silos in Dust-Ex environment. It was also required to display the measurement data of the THERMOPOINT units, the ambient temperature and the humidity in order to provide effective fan controlling depending on the ambient temperature and the relative humidity. According to the settings the system has to be able to start the airing fans automatically. The measured data of all THERMOPOINT transmitters are sent on HART communication line to the MultiCONT multichannel controller/display unit. The collected tempe rature

data is trans mitted from the MultiCONT by its RS485 output to the process control PC through a RS485/RS232 converter module. The provided solution monitors and displays

the medium tempe rature inside the tanks in all the 7 points and calculates the average temperature.

The ambient temperature and the relative humidity values are also monitored and displayed by NIVISION. In case of automatic operation the fans are operating within the set time interval depending on the further settings (ambient temperature or humidity) or according to the customized settings (set individually for each silo). When the average temperature in a silo exceeds or goes below the pre-set limit values the airing fan starts automatically and stops in accordance to the set temperature difference. The selected value here determines that the fan’s ON/OFF switching point (when TAVG – T = TA) will be how many °C less than the average temperature. When the difference between the average temperature of the silo (TAVG) and the temperature difference (T) is higher than the measured ambient temperature the fan will be ON. This operation mode was required that in case of a small 0.1 °C overheat and then cooling back cannot result too frequent start-stop cycles for the fans.

The racers of the NIVELCO Ski Team expected to skiing in the previously tested South American training camp, but there was not enough snow in the Southern Hemisphere because of the unusually warm weather. A short discussion with our good old South African friends and an even shorter discussion with the team resulted in a totally new target place. We headed to another exotic country and finally spent three weeks in Africa.

IN SOuTh AFRICA

Hungarian skier has never trained and especially not participated on any races in this continent before us. We tried to collect useful information from the Internet, we watched pictures and videos and we crossed our fingers. There were 10 Slalom competitions in the FIS calendar which meant two races in every day within only one week.

Since we decided only in the last moment to begin our journey we had no other choice than arrive two days before the competitions and start the long series of race with only one day of training.

Racing wasn’t the primary purpose of this trip but to find ideal training conditions so we tried to take advantage of the races as the best possible way of preparation.

In the first days we have experienced the expected typical African circumstances. At night there was

freezing cold at 3000 m (9800 ft) above sea level and in the daytime bright sunshine

and perfectly frozen artificial snow was waiting for us on the slopes.

Unfortunately the weather on this summer was not really suitable for any teams preparing in the European glaciers. First the continuous snowfalls and storms made the training impossible and then the weather suddenly became too warm which brought more difficult situations for both the competitors and the coaches.

The unexpected surprise came on the night of the second day when it began to snow really hard. During three days nearly a meter (3.3 ft) fell which entirely overwrote our plans. The mountain and the surrounding villages were declared a disaster area because the roads have become impassable within a fifty-kilometer (31 mile) circle. First the Internet then the phone lines and finally the electric current was completely eliminated. The power supplies of the whole mountain were provided by some generators with finite amount of gasoil.

The total freezing of the ski lift caused more concerns both for the competitors and the coaches.Despite further snowstorms and additional unexpected problems all the scheduled competitions were successfully held thanks to the joint superhuman work with the organizers. By introducing an extra day, in the last day six (three female and three male) competitions were held which meant a new record in the history of FIS.

The lot of waiting and deferrals were really exhausting both physically and mentally for the competitors and the coaches. Not to mention the breaks due to the permanent snow removal and sometimes the racers had to climb up the slopes by foot because of the frozen ski lifts.

Finally the long tournament ended with NIVELCO successes.

Noa szőllős confidently won the South African championship in her age-group. Day by day she become more accustomed to the rules of the FIS competition and she raced as a forerunner in all the ten FIS races.

The boys, Barnabás szőllős and Benjamin achieved podium results alternately in all the 10 races and collected valuable slalom points in the beginning of the extended Olympic season.

Barnabás szőllős earned five bronze medals and two silver medals. He also successfully reduced his FIS points so now he is the second best Hungarian racer on the FIS list with 33.83 points (29.70; 37.96).

Benjamin szőllős has not been in his top form on the early races. Mostly he only managed to get one good run out of two. Finally in the last race he could proudly stand on the top of the podium.

Benjamin also came really close to the Olympic qualification with two excellent results (31.10; 38.91).

At the moment Benjamin and Barnábás are leading the FIS ranking of Hungarian U-21 in both main events (SL and GS), and they are getting closer to the Olympic level in more events.

Only after one resting day the valuable training finally began when the tournaments finished. The program included slalom training in six days divided into two workouts a day.All the conditions were optimal for the training thanks to our South African friends and in return they could train together with the NIVELCO Racing Team trained by Markus Erhardt professional coach.

I would like to say thanks again for the invitation of our friends, Alex Heath race director and to Peter Pilz, the President of the South African Ski Federation.
