Welcome to the Autumn 2015 ConcertSeason at the University of Sheffield.

Two ideas frame our adventures in musicaldiscovery this autumn. Our New YorkSeason captures the “throbbing vibrancy ofManhattan”, a musical playground whichplayed host to some of the 20th century’smost intriguing musical minds. Dazzling

broadway composers, jazz scene legends, experimental and minimalistmasters hankering in uptown and downtown apartments...join us as anoutstanding line up of musicians guide our journey through the citythat never sleeps!

This season also features Global Soundtracks, a year-longprogramme of the very best in world, roots, and folk music. This new, international feast showcases Zambian afro-folk, Mali’s Ngoni wizardBassekou Kouyate, Russian and Hungarian Folk, inspiration fromArgentinian travels, Indian improvisation, explorations in ancientPersian music, and traditional music closer to home with UK artistsFay Hield and the Hurricane Party and Cara Dillon.

Elsewhere in the season we offer a fascinating Beethoven cycle with adifference, all ten violin sonatas are performed throughout the year byKrysia Osostowicz and Daniel Tong along with ten newlycommissioned companion pieces.

Finally it’s a pleasure to introduce the Ligeti Quartet as theDepartment of Music’s new Ensemble in Residence and our first everAssociate Concert Artists. The Ligeti Quartet will be with us for twoyears, engineering electrifying performances of modern string quartetmusic for the city in addition to working with schools and colleges onoutreach and education projects.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our forthcoming concerts!

beethoven’s ten violin sonatas are among themost important bodies of work for piano andviolin ever written, setting the standard towhich all other composers aspired. Leadingviolinist of her generation KrysiaOsostowicz teams up with criticallyacclaimed pianist Daniel Tong to bring acomplete performance of the cycle toSheffield with an extra dimension. Ten leadingcomposers have written new companionpieces for each sonata, creating a dialoguebetween past and present, shedding new lighton what beethoven’s music means to us today.

Played together with their new companions, this musical adventure offers an opportunityto hear beethoven’s sonatas afresh, still asradical and provocative today as they weretwo hundred years ago!

Following his excellent performance at last year’sHazel Flagg, live narration will once again be providedby The great british bake Off's Howard Middleton.

Perotá Chingó Itinerant voices of raw beauty andmagnetic simplicity

None of this was planned… but a chancemeeting, a hitch-hike trip and a viral videoclip later, Lola Aguirre and Julia Ortizfound themselves fronting a band with fansalready numbering hundreds of thousands.Since that seminal summer of 2011 PerotáChingó have toured all over Latin America, and more recently Europe in a camper van, mobilising audiences everywhere they gosimply by using the power of socialnetworking. They’ll play anywhere they areinvited to: living rooms, city streets, parksand theatres; an impressive youTube trailseems to track their every appearance.

Their repertoire picks up inspiration fromtheir travels: original songs appearalongside chacareras, sambas, reggae, andmuch in-between, all transformed by theirfree-spirited signature style. Everythingrevolves around the two voices; singing inharmony or unison, or meandering off trackto find each other again, they create a richpalette of sound colour, while guitar andpercussion accompany with minimal, careful arrangements. The result is music ofraw beauty and magnetic simplicity –strangely addictive it is too.
