Violinist Mayuko Katsumura and conductor Benjamin Ellin join the Philharmonia Orchestra in a programme featuring Sibelius’ revealing tone poem En Saga before the conductor’s own and much anticipated violin concerto, Miyabi. This new work fuses together strands of Japanese folklore with the traditions from both performer’s cultures and is packed with musical drama, excitement, intensity and joy.

Savita Devi and Radhika Coprain a thumri and ghazal double bill

Savita is one of the few artists in India who still perform in the increasingly rare classical thumri tradition. The daughter of the great Siddheshwari Devi, to listen to Savita is to be transported into a world of history, beauty, tradition and authenticity. Radhika has established herself as a rare and talented performer of the SUFI genre of ghazal. Her command of both Urdu and Hindi has allowed her to develop a wide repertoire including all the well-known poets.

Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishrain a rare recital of thumri

Rajan and Sajan Mishra are recognised as India’s finest singers of the North Indian style of khyal. Literally translated as ‘imagination’, khyal is an elaborate and virtuoso style, demanding improvisational flexibility as well as careful attention to notation, phrasing and rhythm. In this concert they focus on thumri, a romantic and lyrical style of singing closely associated with Varanasi.

Both of these styles of singing had their origins in the music of the khankas and dargas of Sufi saints – always expressing longing for God. Featuring the great qawali singers Nizami and Niazi Brothers from Delhi and Karachi and Imran Khan – Delhi gharana – outstanding singer of Sufi poetry in the form of ghazal.

Live orchestral film screening

A silent, romantic comedy written, directed and starring Charlie Chaplin. The story follows the misadventures of Chaplin’s Tramp as he falls in love with a blind girl and develops a turbulent friendship with an alcoholic millionaire.

The London Chinese Philharmonic Choir commemorates the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Chinese people’s War of Resistance in this evening’s concert. Pergolesi Adriano in Siria (UK premiere)

The UK premiere of Pergolesi’s 1734 Naples opera, Adriano in Siria, with a libretto by Pietro Metastasio.

Anyone familiar with Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater will appreciate the numerous melodic arias in this opera, one of only two opera seria that the composer wrote in his short life.

‘There’s some absolutely first-rate music here, both high – and low-brow, and cutting edge for the 1730s in its daring simplicity and directness. Act II of the opera in particular contains an almost unbroken succession of chart-topping arias, many of which remained popular for years after Pergolesi’s death.’ Simon Heighes

The Pansori Night will bring together six talented performers for an evening of music, dance and song with a contemporary twist. Pansori is a form of vocal story-telling that reaches back centuries — the stories sung are often comic, with a Chaucerian comedy to them, but they are also more than just bawdiness, and can be romantic, sad and emotional to boot.

Rising pansori talent Sang-il Nam will be joined by Aeri Park, one of Korea’s leading female pansori performers. Aeri Park will also perform with ‘Poppin’ Hyunjoon, who takes breakdance moves and blends them with traditional rhythms. Our three stars will also be joined by Bae Reon, playing the ajaeng – a seven-stringed instrument, percussionist Kye-youl Jun accompanying the pansori with the janggu (Korean drum) and traditional dancer Ji-sun Choi.

Albert Lee, one of the most respected guitarists in the country-rock music scene, is joined on stage by special guest Ralph McTell, his American touring band and renowned steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar as part of his Solo Tour 2015.

Albert made his name touring with the likes of Eric Clapton, The Everly Brothers and Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band through the ’70s and ’80s, and has maintained a devoted fan-base the world over. Lauded for his unparalleled picking style, Albert was joined by a massive list of special guests at his 70th birthday celebration concerts at Cadogan Hall in 2014 (available soon on DVD and CD).

With the new solo acoustic album Highwayman just released to critical acclaim and a documentary of his life in the works, Albert will continue to tour solo with his incredible band of hand-picked musicians – J.T. The Doctors’ Orchestra’s aptly chosen programme for this fundraising concert juxtaposes Bizet’s sunny portrayals of children at play and Mahler’s poignant settings of poems by Rückert, written after the deaths of two of his children. These songs succeed in offering both solace and hope in the midst of deepest grief.

Concluding the concert, Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony affirms the heroic capacity of the human spirit to overcome even the cruellest adversity.

‘Every parent’s worst nightmare is to lose a child’. This phrase may be a cliché but each year, for thousands of parents, the nightmare becomes a reality.

The Compassionate Friends is an organisation of bereaved parents offering support, understanding and friendship to others after the loss of a child, of any age.

Bursting with energetic jazz rhythms and harmonies, the first half of this programme features works by Bernstein and Gershwin, composers who seamlessly blended classical traditions with exciting new elements of jazz, thus creating an iconic 20th-century American sound. Tonight, British pianist Mark Bebbington performs Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, sometimes referred to as the ‘jazz concerto’.

Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, was written in NYC in 1893, when the rich, lush sounds of romanticism were still the fashion. His inspiration came not only from the Native American and African-American music he heard, but the ‘wide open spaces’ he saw in America.

This evening of music begins with the overture to Wagner’s opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, one of Wagner’s most lyrical and uplifting works. This sunny composition is followed by a performance of Rachmaninov’s romantic Piano Concerto No. 1, played by award-winning Russian pianist Andrei Korobeinikov, made up of weighty piano chords, heart-wrenching tunes and sumptuous orchestral accompaniment.

The orchestra concludes with Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, whose rich orchestral colours and triumphant climax are a fitting finale, described by many as being the most original and powerful movement he ever wrote.

Hot on the heels of recording sessions for Centaur Records USA, the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra of London presents the UK debut of American flautist Margaret Cornils Luke. The first half consists of a selection of the works for flute and orchestra that will appear on CD, many of which are rarely performed gems of the repertoire.

Following the interval the PCOL performs Tchaikovsky’s monumental Sixth Symphony. Regarded by many to be his greatest work and arguably the greatest Russian symphony ever written, Tchaikovsky described it as ‘the best thing I have composed’. The work has become a much-loved part of the repertoire due to its sweeping melodies, boundless energy, and dark conclusion.

In an evening of colourful music from Morocco and Spain, the Spanish-born mezzo-soprano, Clara Mouriz, a former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, joins the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Garry Walker, in a rare performance of the original 1915 version of Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo.

The young Moroccan pianist, Dina Bensaïd, makes her London debut with Ahmed Essyad’s Nadim for piano and percussion and the brilliant Swiss guitarist Christoph Denoth performs Maurice Ohana’s nine-string guitar concerto Trois graphiques.

Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable song writing, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism.

The award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now from her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of Send in the Clowns, a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music, won ‘Song of the Year’ at the 1975 Grammy Awards. To make the challenge even greater, we’ll be performing Prokofiev’s sparkling, cheeky and devilishly difficult Classical Symphony. Bouncing along with energy, it’s full of musical mischief just waiting to be explored. Alongside 33 electrifying young players, you can also expect dramatic lighting effects and specially created videos that help to take you right inside the orchestra and the music being played.

After the concert you can meet the musicians and try out some of their instruments in Cadogan Hall’s foyer.

October 23rd is a national holiday in Hungary. It commemorates the Revolution of 1956, a spontaneous nationwide revolt against the government of the Hungarian Communist Party and its Soviet-imposed policies. Though leaderless when it first began, it was the first major threat to Soviet control since the USSR’s forces drove out the Nazis at the end of World War 2 and invaded Central and Eastern Europe. Despite the failure of the uprising, it was highly influential and indicated the downfall of the Soviet Union. This significant date also commemorates the ‘Day of the Republic’ as, in 1989, after the fall of communism, Hungary was declared a republic on October 23rd.

Tonight’s concert, featuring some outstanding artists from Hungary, is a remembrance of this Revolution and those who tragically lost their lives sixty years ago on this very day.

Wagner’s second opera, Das Liebesverbot (The Ban on Love), was written in 1836 to a libretto based on Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure and reflects contemporary fashion and taste for French and Italian operatic styles. One of Wagner’s two grand comic operas, the other being Die Meistersinger, this is a rare opportunity to reassess what in many ways remains his most significant early work and non-German opera with its action transferred from Vienna to Palermo. Despite hints of Mozart, Beethoven and Weber, Wagner’s later music is discernible, albeit in embryonic form.

Medieval tales of Oberon, king of the fairies, sparked the imagination of many artistic geniuses including Carl Maria von Weber, whose opera Oberon unfolds dreamily with a ‘magic horn call’.

Another composer influenced by mythology and Scandinavian legend is Grieg, whose only piano concerto ranks among the most popular works ever written, performed tonight by the exhilarating pianist Alessandro Taverna.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, Pastoral, is the only symphony for which the composer wrote descriptive notes for each movement, such as ‘Merry Gathering of Country Folk’ and ‘Thunder, Storm’. It was originally titled ‘Recollections of Country Life’.

Performing Beethoven’s heroic Emperor Piano Concerto is Yevgeny Sudbin, hailed by The Telegraph as ‘one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century’.

Brussels Philharmonic, joined by the former Music Director of Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Yoel Levi and soprano Susan Gritton, give a performance of Strauss’ Four Last Songs. The piece, often quoted as his epitaph, is full of orchestral colour, radiant lyricism and Strauss’ life-long love affair with the soprano voice.

Susan Gritton, former principal singer at English National Opera is one of the finest singers of her generation and is acclaimed for her versatility in many roles.

To end the evening, the orchestra plays Mahler’s ebullient Symphony No. 4. The symphony, described as Mahler’s sunniest, is full of expressive orchestral detail and glorious melodies.

Legendary American songwriter, virtuoso guitarist and pianist, Nils Lofgren makes a welcome return to the UK. After touring with Bruce Springsteen as a long-time member of the E Street Band on both the 2012-13 Wrecking Ball tour and the 2014 High Hopes tour Nils Lofgren is back to perform his own legendary live show.

Known for his world-class guitar playing, and his on-stage acrobatics, Nils Lofgren is a true rock legend in his own right. A superb front-man, both with Grin and under his own name.

Recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band, Nils released Face the Music in August last year, a 10-disc retrospective box set of his 45 years of recording.

Nils is joined for an acoustic set by multi-instrumentalist Greg Varlotta. Expect classic Lofgren favorites like Shine Silently, I Came to Dance, Keith Don’t Go and many others from his vast back catalogue.

Crash Bang Wallop! The Musical Party

Donovan was born Donovan Philips Leitch in Scotland as part of the post-war baby-boom in 1946. On 14 April 2012 he took his rightful place among his peers when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who announced that ‘Donovan single-handedly initiated the Psychedelic Revolution with his album Sunshine Superman’.

This album also announced flower power and meditation, a whole year before The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Donovan continued to influence The Beatles on The White Album, teaching John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison his finger-style guitar and unique chord structures, inspiring Dear Prudence, Blackbird and While My Guitar Gently Weeps, to name just a few. ‘Donovan is all over The White Album’ (George Harrison).

He is a legendary folk-rock-pop poet and truly is one of the pre-eminent members of British rock royalty, and the creator of many innovative recording techniques and pioneering musical fusions which influenced the styles of so many artists worldwide.

The concert concludes with Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony which is universally recognized as a masterpiece. Prokofiev’s wonderful melodic gift coupled with vibrant, colourful orchestration, rhythmic excitement and sumptuous harmonies cannot fail to please.

Cadogan Hall is thrilled to welcome back the critically acclaimed pianist for a solo piano recital.

Beethoven’s gentle Op. 28 sonata, nicknamed the Pastoral due to its relaxed character, opens the concert, followed by two of Chopin’s dark-hued Polonaises.

The virtuoso showpiece, the Grand Sonata, is one of Tchaikovsky’s masterworks, composed around the same time as his Violin Concerto and Fourth Symphony, though is performed far less often. Flashy and heroic in parts, meditative and radiant in others, the work shows off the composer’s gift for both lyricism and bravura writing.

This second concert is focused on music written for or about Napoleon and is a chronological journey through his life with positive and negative artistic responses to him. Schoenberg’s setting of Byron’s powerful poem, written in 1942 when another tyranny held sway over Europe, pours scorn on the idea of achieving ambition at the cost of other people’s lives.

The composers featured in tonight’s programme were inspired by the two great cities, Paris and New York. Although each is known for their distinct, unmistakable styles, their music has one unifying characteristic in common: thrilling, irresistible rhythm.

Prokofiev’s fiendishly difficult Piano Concerto No. 3 was premiered by the composer himself in 1921 and reaches heights of almost frightening brilliance, juxtaposed against earthy lyricism.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Associate Conductor, Alexander Shelley leads this programme that balances driving intensity with playful comedy in equal proportions.

Mozart’s profound and poignant setting of the Requiem Mass is complemented by two other late works. His radiant 39th Symphony was the first of his final trio of symphonies; its key of E flat major was associated in the composer’s time with love and solemnity. The moving devotional motet Ave Verum Corpus was written for the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1791. Less than six months later Mozart was dead, leaving the unfinished Requiem to be completed by his pupil Süssmayr.

Samuel Barber’s much loved violin concerto will be played by brilliant soloist Min-Jin Kym, and the concert concludes with a work chosen by the BBC as ‘one of the 10 best classical pieces every child should hear before they are 10’ – Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.

75 years on from the historic battle, the bands of the Royal Air Force present an evocative and rousing evening of musical entertainment that captures the essence of 1940s Britain and tells the story of how the spirit and capability of those who took part endures in the professionalism of the people who make up today’s RAF.

Featuring the Bands of the RAF, the evening will include rousing military marches, popular songs from the era, plus big band numbers and classical pieces that showcase the virtuosity of the musicians.

From Bernstein’s Mambo to Holst’s Mars, the concert will serve as a musical tribute to all those who participated in the Battle of Britain and to those who have inherited their legacy.

Trumpeter, composer, bandleader, inspiration — Kenny Wheeler remains an immense figure in jazz. When he left the jazz planet in September last year after a creative life stretching over six decades, he left an extraordinary musical legacy with an international resonance, touching the heart and soul of audiences and fellow musicians of successive generations worldwide, with his gorgeous sound and melodic grace. Kenny occupied a special Jazz Festival place in recent years, with both big band and his final, acclaimed small band.

Following last season’s remarkable Oberon, NSO reunites director Harry Fehr and conductor Nicholas Jenkins for one of the most performed operas of the late 19th century – Mignon by Ambroise Thomas.

Neglected since then, this delectable 1866 opéra-comique, inspired by Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister, tells the story of the enigmatic and waif-like Mignon, tormented in captivity and longing for freedom, peace, and love. Founded in 1934 the official Prague Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2014. We welcome back BRIT Award-winning Chloë Hanslip to our series who reviewers said ‘gave a wonderful blend of ice and fire’ and played with ‘glorious swoops and luscious timbre’ when she appeared at Cadogan Hall with Bern Symphony Orchestra in April 2015. Chloë plays Beethoven’s only Violin Concerto, lauded as a masterpiece of tenderness and serenity.

Intrigue and mystery envelope Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, Unfinished, for which only two movements were completed. It stretches beyond elegant, balanced Classicism and opens with a ghostly pianissimo in the low strings.

Although the name Tchaikovsky prompts memories of alluring romantic melodies and powerful orchestral works, he was a composer who revered Mozart above all others. This love influenced Tchaikovsky to write Variations on a Rococo Theme, performed tonight by enchanting British cellist Laura van der Heijden.

Dvořák hoped that his impassioned Symphony No. 7, inspired by past sorrows and love for his Czech homeland, would be ‘capable of stirring the world’.
