Take careWith the holy month of Ramadan almost

coming to an end, we look with joy to the Eid al Fitr celebrations. With

‘SALE’ boards in almost all the shops, there is a lot of family enjoyment in and around the city. However, this month also seems to bring sadness to families who have lost their loved ones in the numerous road accidents. It is hard to imagine, especially with the safe roads in Oman, but we sadly have one the highest road fatality rates in the world. And reasons for the accidents includes something as basic as exceeding the speed limits, to something as serious as talking on the phone while driving.

Ironically, many people believe that speeding is the primary cause of accidents. While this may be a statistical fact, we can’t help but feel it has more to do with drivers not being aware of their surroundings. It is true that reckless drivers are all around us and some accidents are unavoidable. But more often than not, a majority of them can be circumvented. Avoid getting distracted, and be aware of every car around you. Then you are likely to notice any signs of danger early enough to take the required evasive manoeuvre.

Ramadan is also a time for people to splurge on a new family vehicle. But when you buy one,

know what the vehicle is capable of and what its safety features are. Big and heavy doesn’t necessarily mean a safer car. Know what safety systems are available on the car and run a check on its safety ratings from institutions such as Euro NCAP. But most important of all, buckle up the moment you get in a car. The few precious seconds it takes to fasten your seatbelt could mean the difference between life and death. If not for yourself, do it for your family.

Drive safe, Ramadan Kareem and Eid Mubarak to you and your family.

NEWSGeely Emgrand now in Oman

Having launched the new Audi A8 L with a 372hp 4.2 FSI Quattro engine, Audi is now adding a further engine to the Middle East portfolio of the A8 L. The new 3.0 TFSI V6 engine provides 290hp of power and 420Nm of torque. It accelerates from zero to 100kmph in 6.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250kmph. Audi’s entry-level A8 L starts from RO32,370. Like all of Audi’s models for the Middle East, the A8 L 3.0 TFSI was developed and tested for the hot climates of the region. The top-of-the range Audi A8 L model, the A8 W12, is expected to arrive in the Middle East later this year.

Ahmad al Harthy maintained his top-three position in the Pro-Am 1 Class standings of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship at Snetterton 300 Circuit on 7 August. Frustratingly for the 29-year-old the resumption of the 2011 season didn’t bear fruit in terms of strong points finishes. Provisional 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship ‘Pro-Am 1’ Standings (after Round 11) are as follows: 1st Jonas Gelzinis, 121pts; 2nd Rory Butcher, 73pts; 3rd Ahmad al Harthy, 51pts. Rounds 12 and 13 of the 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship will take place four weeks from now over the weekend – 3rd and 4th of September – at Knockhill Circuit in Scotland.

Towell Auto Centre recently launched Geely Embrand’s LC, EC 7 (Sedan and Hatchback), and EC 8 (2.0L and 2.4L) models at their showroom in Wattayah. The popular Geely Emgrand LC has a 1.3L DOHC, four cylinders five-speed manual. The suave Geely Emgrand EC 7 is available in sedan and hatchback models, and has a 1.8L DOHC four-cylinder four-speed automatic (CVVT). “Geely Emgrand cars are renowned for their up-to-date technology, great performance and superb quality which result in customer satisfaction. From

the design concept to the manufacturing, all Geely Emgrand models have been developed in accordance with European standards. We at TAC are extremely pleased

to partner with them, and make available this exciting range of cars to the Sultanate of Oman,” says S Kasthurirengan, CEO of TAC.

Mazda has given the world a sneak peek at their all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV but will hold the world premiere at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday, 13 September. The CX-5 is the first of a new generation of Mazda products that will adopt the full range of Mazda’s breakthrough Skyactiv Technology and the new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’. The Mazda CX-5 will be progressively introduced to global markets

from early 2012. The vehicle was developed around the full range of Skyactiv Technology – including all-new Mazda gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, body and chassis. Joining the CX-5 on Mazda’s stand at the Frankfurt Show will be the upgraded Mazda3. This popular Mazda now delivers lower CO2 emissions, more sporty and stable driving dynamics, with an updated interior and exterior design, and higher quality levels.

In the duel against Mercedes-Benz, Audi has raised the score of victories to 4-2. In front of 86,500 spectators Mattias Ekström in the Audi A4 DTM of Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline was in a class of his own at the Nürburgring. From the pole position the Swede achieved an advantage of 5.533 seconds over the leader of the standings, Bruno Spengler, and celebrated his 15th DTM victory that was never at risk in the race. Mattias Ekström had to wait exactly 63 weeks for this day. The last DTM race won by the Audi driver had been at Valencia at the end of May 2010.

LETTERSIf you have any queries, mail us on [email protected], and we will try to answer them in the next issue.

Hello I am Rizwan. I am a regular reader of your magazine. Must say you guys are doing a great job. Your magazine contains really good information. Could you guys help me make the decision between a Land Cruiser GLX V6 (2011) and Prado V6 (2011)? I am planning to buy the car this Ramadan, but I don’t know which one. I got both the catalogues. On paper both look amazing. Could you give me a comparison between them and which one would be a better choice? Looking forward to your help.Warm Regards,

– Rizwan Behlim

Hi Rizwan,The decision between the two basically depends on what you are expecting of the vehicle. The Land Cruiser is more off-road capable, more spacious and altogether a tougher vehicle. At the same time it is also pricier than, and not as comfortable to use daily. If your main purpose is the practicality of the vehicle and you intend to use it as your primary means of transport, the Prado is a better choice. And since it is also a very capable off-roader, it won’t disappoint you in the weekends either. But if you are looking for a weekend vehicle and something that is tough, then the Land Cruiser is a no-brainer.

Dear Editor,I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to cars and was wondering what exactly ABS is and how it works. Please could you explain it to me?Thanks,

– Salim al Abri

Dear Salim,ABS basically stands for anti-lock braking system and it does exactly what the name implies – prevents your brakes from locking up under heavy braking. In layman’s terms, it prevents your car from screeching and losing control under emergency braking conditions.

A typical ABS includes a central electronic control unit (ECU), four-wheel speed sensors, and at least two hydraulic valves within the brake hydraulics. The ECU constantly monitors the rotational speed of each wheel; if it detects a wheel rotating significantly slower than the others, a condition indicative of impending wheel lock, it actuates the valves to reduce hydraulic pressure to the brake at the affected wheel, thus reducing the braking force on that wheel; the wheel then turns faster. Conversely, if the ECU detects a wheel turning significantly faster than the others, brake hydraulic pressure to the wheel is increased so the braking force is reapplied, slowing down the wheel. This process is repeated continuously and can be detected by the driver via brake pedal pulsation. This not only prevents the brakes from locking, it also allows you to retain control of the steering.

Dear Autobloid team,I recently went to the Volkswagen showroom and drove the new Jetta. I was quite impressed with the car and was considering a purchase during Ramadan. But I have always liked the Golf. However it seems to be even more expensive than the Jetta and comes with a 1.4l engine. I was wondering if it was really worth the extra money or should I just stick to the Jetta? Thanks in advance,

Sangeetha

Dear Sangeetha,While the new Jetta is a good vehicle, the new golf is absolutely brilliant. Do not be fooled by the 1.4l engine. It is turbocharged and produces in excess of 160hp. In such a light vehicle, the combination of low weight, high power and a brilliant DSG gearbox allows for some surprising performance figures. While it may not be as spacious as a Jetta, the difference is not much. So, it is definitely worth considering especially if you like Golfs. But as always, take one for a quick spin and run a check on the maintenance costs before you decide.

irst the sedan, then the coupe and now the cabriolet. Brabus is hell bent of turning every Mercedes they can get their hands on into a

certified machine of insanity. This is their latest creation – the Brabus 800 E V12 Cabriolet. Basically, it is an 800hp biturbo twelve-cylinder high-capacity monster fitted under the hood of a seriously modified open-top Mercedes E-Class. Like its brethren, the Brabus E V12 Cabriolet is a high-performance automobile of superlatives: it can reach a top speed of up to 370kmph (231mph) and is currently the world’s most powerful and fastest four-seater cabriolet.

In building this supercar the Brabus engineers drew upon the know-how gained from building numerous E V12 sedans and coupes. Precision work was required to implant the biturbo engine and a reinforced five-speed

automatic transmission in the engine bay of the E-Class Cabriolet. This is the most powerful engine in the line-up and is based on the three-valve V12 engine of the current Mercedes S 600 model. The company’s engine-building shop re-engineers this engine in all aspects. A special crankshaft with longer stroke and larger pistons in conjunction with increased cylinder bore bumps displacement from standard 5.5 to 6.3 litres. Further modifications to the engine’s inner workings include cylinder heads optimised for mixture flow and sports camshafts.

The engine peripherals are reworked just as extensively. You get two special exhaust manifolds with integrated larger turbochargers to ensure a more efficient turbo charging process. The biturbo system is rounded out with four water-to-air intercoolers which also make a crucial contribution to the exceptional power yield. The stainless-

steel high-performance exhaust system with four tailpipes was created specifically for the E-Class Cabriolet. The intake manifold was also completely redesigned and takes its place under the custom-built hood and its integrated carbon-fibre ram-air hood scoop. And for perfect interaction of all performance-increasing measures, the electronic engine management system had to be remapped.

It produces 800hp at 5,500rpm and peak torque of 1,420Nm, limited electronically in the car to 1,100Nm. The car is also fitted with a Brabus high-performance limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 per cent, and sprints from rest to 100kmph in just 3.7 seconds. After 9.9 seconds you will already be cruising at 200kmph. The 300kmph barrier shatters after just 23.9 seconds. Depending on the final-drive ratio the E V12 has a top speed of up to 370kmph.

The special suspension components were custom-designed for the front and rear axle. They provide a much wider range of individual suspension settings. These components are joined by a coil-over suspension calibrated to the higher engine weight. The suspension was developed together with Bilstein and

features ten selectable settings for bound and rebound front and back. The ride height can also be adjusted by up to 35mm to suit each driver’s personal preferences. And to tame all the power, the car comes with massive 380x37mm vented and grooved steel brake discs and 12-piston aluminium fixed callipers on the front axle and 360x28mm discs with six-piston aluminium fixed callipers at the rear. And the 400kmph speedometer bears witness to the unique performance potential of this EUR478,000 (~RO265,000) open-top four-seater even while it is standing still.

Feast your eyes on some of the most impressive, recently unveiled, race cars that are prepping themselves for some fierce competition in future GT3 and DTM races

BMW M3 DTMAudi A5 DTM

RACE ON

The first McLaren car built for racing outside of Formula 1 since the McLaren F1 GTR made its public world debut at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The recently revised McLaren MP4-12C GT3 is fitted with components designed to optimise the car’s aerodynamic performance. These include a front radiator, which increases the maximum ambient temperature at which the car can run, along with a new gearbox cooler mounted on the rear Aerodeck. These features complete an aerodynamic package incorporating a new front splitter, door blade, rear wing, diffuser and louvres in the front fenders, all of which is produced entirely from carbon fibre by McLaren Racing. Like the 12C road car, the GT3 features a unique one-piece carbon fibre chassis, the ‘MonoCell’, and is also supplied with the same steering wheel design used by Lewis Hamilton in his MP4-24 Formula 1 car.

When BMW returns to the DTM next season, it will also mark the comeback of a racing legend: between 1987 and 1992 the BMW M3 celebrated no less than 40 wins and over 150 podium finishes in this series. The BMW M3 DTM is based on the fourth generation of the most sporty production car to emerge from BMW M. This concept offers an initial impression of what the BMW M3 DTM will look like when it lines up at the start of the 2012 season. This spectacular racing car is all set to thrill fans. The powerful V8 engine equipped with the air restrictor generates approximately 480hp. The car accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in about three seconds and boasts a top speed of approximately 300kmph.

From 2012 on, Audi will bank on the A5 in the most popular international touring car racing series. The coupe, which is internally named ‘R17,’ will replace the four-door A4 DTM with which Audi has won the prestigious DTM title four times since 2004. The V8 engine with a power output of about 460hp will be adopted from the successful A4 DTM nearly unchanged. The proven six-speed transmission will continue to be used as well. Characteristic features of the 2012 generation of DTM vehicles are a larger rear wing and a reduction of the permitted aerodynamic components. The first prototype of the R17 is currently being built up at Audi Sport in Ingolstadt. The roll-out is just around the corner. The new Audi A5 DTM will be unveiled to the public at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt.

While the SLS AMG GT3 is nothing new now, this one in particular is. The customer team Black Falcon will be at the starting line of the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) with their Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 with start number 35 and has been given the same look as the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG with which Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz achieved a class victory and overall second place 40 years ago. Even more special is the fact that, among the drivers of the SLS AMG GT3 will be Kenneth Heyer, Hans Heyer’s son. A total of seven gull-wings will compete in this classic Belgian long-distance race and it will certainly be an exciting one.

We put the new Audi A6 and BMW 5-Series through their paces to see which is better at what

DYNAMIC PERFECTION

Page 9: Autobloid Issue 4

With both the new Audi A6 and BMW 5-Series now available in Oman, we wasted no time in taking these two for a blast through the mountains to see just how good they both were. The

Audi we acquired was the 2.8l version of the A6 and from BMW we acquired the 528i. Both of these vehicles we had driven before but never together on the same day. So, if you were wondering just how different or similar these two vehicles are this is the article for you.

LooksBoth cars take a very different approach in terms of design. The Audi, with its long bonnet, angular headlamps, signature grille and low sweeping roofline, is the sportier looking of the two. The BMW, on the other hand, takes a more suave and sublime approach to its design that is very much like the new 3-Series. The look is more subdued with short overhangs and sweeping curves.

Regardless, both are very handsome machines and are definitely more pleasing to the eye than either of their predecessors.

Under the skinThe Audi A6 is available with two engines, the 2.8l FSI V6 and the 3.0l TFSI V6. The vehicle we had available for the test was the former. The 2.8l FSI V6 produces 204hp and 280Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via Audi’s new S-tronic seven-speed dual clutch transmission and their signature Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The BMW 5-Series has a much wider range of engine options which include two naturally aspirated 3.0l straight-six engines, a twin-turbo 3.0l straight-six and a twin-turbo 4.4l V8. The 528i we had on test was equipped with a naturally aspirated straight-six, producing 258hp and 310Nm of torque. To be honest, the more appropriate competitor for the 2.8l Audi A6, both in price and performance, would have been the 523i, but we were unable to acquire one in time for the test.

ConclusionBoth cars are significant improvements over their predecessors offering the very best of German engineering in light weight bodies and sporty engines. They both offer great ride comfort, refinement and space, and also come well equipped. Despite this, they are very different beasts when it comes to the drive. If you prefer great cornering stability and the security of an all-wheel-drive system then the A6 is a no brainer. But if you are looking for a bit of rear-wheel-drive fun then it has to be the 5-Series. But make sure the latter has the sport automatic transmission and ‘Driving Dynamics Control’ option equipped or you will never be able to enjoy the full potential of the vehicle.

Inside the cabinBoth cars have extremely supportive seats with ample adjustment to fit drivers of all statures. Both are also extremely spacious, even in the back. The centre console layouts are quite similar with only the audio and AC controls present on the centre console. The primary controls for the centre mounted screen are near the gear lever on both cars. The Audi’s controls feel a little more cluttered than that of the BMW’s but it allows for quicker navigation of the menus once you get used to them so it is excusable. Both feature top-notch build quality and materials. All controls and dials are clearly labelled.

Both cars were also very well equipped with cruise control, climate control, steering wheel-mounted controls for the stereo, leather upholstery, sat nav, Xenon headlamps, electronic park brake and more.Additionally, both vehicles can be optioned up to higher levels should you want to and the prices are almost identical.

Ride and PerformanceBoth vehicles feature lightweight construction and as such both vehicles are somewhat similar in weight. The BMW is understandably faster than the Audi in a straight line thanks to its power advantage. The Bimmer hits 100kmph from standstill in about 6.6s and powers on to a limited top speed of 250kmph. The Audi, on the other hand, accelerates to 100kmph in a little over eight seconds and tops off at 240kmph. We have driven the 523i before and we can say that its times are almost identical to those posted by the Audi.

When it comes to cornering, however, we found it hard to keep up with Audi. Its Quattro all-wheel-drive provides levels of grip and composure that is hard to match. Despite its light steering, the A6 is

still extremely fun to drive keeping you thoroughly engaged through every bend. You definitely won’t be losing out on the fun when driving the BMW. A naturally-aspirated straight six powering the rear wheels in the body of a BMW is a match made in heaven for any spirited driver. It’s true, a proper manual transmission would have made the combination perfect but alas we can’t have everything. Besides, the eight-speed automatic is a very capable transmission with barely a hint of lag when switching gears.

On the road, as a daily drive, both cars are equally good. Both are extremely refined, smooth and comfortable. And the road noise we first experienced when driving the Audi two issues back was thankfully absent.

e recently had an opportunity to meet up with a 22-year veteran of the automotive industry,

David Aziz, director, MHD Automotive. With a degree in Physics and applied mathematics, Aziz has worked his way up the automotive ladder in the United Kingdom; starting as a sales executive in the early 1990s, he then went on to become a sales manager, general manager, dealer principal and finally, the operations director of the White House Group, before coming to Oman in 2003 and taking his place as the director of MHD Automotive. The eight years that Aziz has spent in Oman has given him great insight into the local market and the various brands that MHD deals in. He was more than happy to share his knowledge, giving us an in-depth look at the current and future vehicles that will grace the MHD showrooms in Oman in the coming years.

One of the more recent additions was the all-new Jaguar XJ, which was completely redesigned. There are people who still comment that the change was too drastic and different from the previous models in the range. But this is what Jaguar intended to do. They were looking to revamp the entire range and the XJ was the end of the line. According to Aziz, “It will take time for everyone to accept the new design direction. It is human nature to resist change in something we are used to. As such it will take quite a bit of time for some people to digest and understand the reasoning behind the change.” Overall, the XJ has lifted some eyebrows but has been accepted and with time will pick up in popularity.

The XF, on the other hand, has been a great success for MHD and has been getting stronger by the day. “I am pleased to tell you that our sales of the XF has been increasing year-on-year. We have already achieved by the end of July what we sold in the entire of 2010,” claimed Aziz. “We will continue with our aggressive marketing of the XF. In fact we are now selling the XF 3.0l Luxury for just RO15,750,” he added. MHD also has a special limited edition of the XF for Ramadan. There are nearly a dozen

of these vehicles that will be sold at RO14,750. Aziz added, “This is the first and probably the last time you will see an XF at this price. “We also have the new Range Rover Evoque coming soon and are very excited about it”. The new vehicle will be here by the end of October or early November and will be available in both three- and five-door forms. They will be available with a 2.0 Litre turbocharged engines with 240hp and will be priced between RO24,000 and RO25,000, with a good selection of colours and trims. From the looks of things, the Evoque will have a

significant impact on the market with many orders already been placed.

“We have also acquired a new vehicle brand called Luxgen and we are currently building a showroom for this new agency. While we haven’t yet launched it, we are certain the brand will have a big stamp in Oman. The quality of the vehicle, which is equipped with the very latest in automotive technology, and the price is extremely competitive,” says Aziz.

“MHD as a group has always been associated with luxury products but

now we have a standalone facility for commercial products such as Ashok Leyland, JMC and CMC. We are entering the volume sector with BYD and MG and have Luxgen joining the family,” says Aziz. MHD also enjoys a very strong market share in used-car sales. Their used-car centre is one of the most popular in Oman. “We aim to make MHD a one-stop-shop for all your motoring requirements by providing a competitive range of products, all the way from commercial vehicles and volume cars to top-end luxury vehicles,” he concludes.

CLASSIC CARS

• Parallel parking can be a pain for many people. But there is a simple technique to be followed. All it requires is basic judgement and average reversing skill.

• Seek out a space you can comfortably get your car into.

• Line up your vehicle with the parked vehicle directly in front of your desired spot but keep about a two foot distance between them.

• Put the car into reverse and while you do so turn sharply but slowly into the parking spot.

• When the front of your car aligns with the rear of the car in front, turn the steering the other direction while reversing to ease into the spot and straighten the car, all the while being wary of the car behind and the curb.

• Once you go as far back as possible, you can move forward once again to centre the car’s position and keep adequate space for the other two cars to move out.

Parallel parking

Quite possibly one of the most impressive cars of the 1970s, the 3.0CSi was the diamond of

BMW’s fleet. It was the symbol of prestige and power that was one of the few that offered both luxury and performance in one package. Its roots date back to the birth of the E9 platform that began development in 1962. The E9 was first unveiled in 1968 in the form of the 2800CS and was replaced by the 3.0CS and 3.0CSi in 1971. The CSi was the top model in the BMW fleet at the time and was priced at 29,440DEM at the time. Although this wasn’t cheap, it was an extremely successful vehicle selling more than 8,000 units. In 1972, BMW introduced the

3.0CSL which was a homologation special built to make the car eligible for racing in the European Touring Car Championship. The ‘L’ in the designation meant ‘leicht’ (light), unlike in other BMW designations, where it meant ‘lang’ (long). The lightness was achieved by using thinner steel to build the unit body, deleting the trim and soundproofing, using aluminium alloy doors, bonnets and boot lids, and using Perspex side windows. The car’s success in Touring Car Championship and the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft helped to establish BMW’s status as a sporty driver’s car.

Did you know? The first two BMW Art Cars were 3.0CSLs; the first was painted by Alexander Calder and the second by Frank Stella

ean as wire, hard as iron and dark as a tar road at midnight, the new Blackline motorcycle is a Harley Davidson Softail model claimed by the

company to be ‘stripped to the core’. The bike was created by Dark Custom to celebrate the three fundamental elements of motorcycling: mechanical beauty, internal combustion, and the long black line of the road ahead.

The Blackline discards previous conventions of colour and chrome, instead going for a look that is more functional and attainable. The rear fender is bobbed high-and-tight over a slim, 144mm tire that emphasises an authentic hardtail profile. The bike utilises Profile Laced Aluminium wheels with black anodised rims. The front wheel is 21x2.15 inches while the rear is 16x3 inches.

The compact headlight and speedometer are tucked low into the wide, FX front end, and there’s just enough shine to make the black parts look blacker. The analogue speedometer, on a triple-clamp mount, also holds indicator lights and an LCD screen that includes low-fuel warning and ‘miles to empty’ display function. The powertrain is finished in gloss black powdercoat on the

rocker box covers, the crankcase, the outer primary cover and the transmission side cover. The cylinders are silver powdercoated with machined highlights. Black-rimmed laced wheels complete a look that’s tough, tempered and undeniably Harley Davidson.

The spotlight, however, shines on the Big Twin engine dressed in black and silver, and on a fuel tank shaved smooth and low. The former is an internally counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B engine that is rigid-mounted within the frame, creating a solid connection between rider and the power that moves the motorcycle. The V-Twin engine is fitted with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) and is rated at 92lb.ft of peak torque at 3,500rpm. The new Asymmetric five-gallon Softail fuel tank is clean on the left side, with a low-profile fuel fill on the right. It has a die cast ‘Blackline’ trim panel flowing down the centre of the tank that is just high enough to cover the fuel pump hardware. Aboard the Blackline, the rider hugs the frame on the lowest two-up seat ever (the laden rider seat height is 610mm) offered by Harley Davidson, and reaches high for new internally-wired Split Drag handlebars that bolt right to the top triple-clamp.

The Softail chassis utilises rear suspension control provided by coil-over shock absorbers mounted horizontally along the frame rails below the powertrain, where they are out of sight. So while the swingarm section replicates the lines of a vintage hardtail frame, the Blackline delivers suspension performance and handling that are thoroughly modern.

On 30 June 2011, Tudor became the Timing Partner of Ducati, This wide-ranging partnership is marked by the launch of a commemorative watch to celebrate the accord with style, adding to the collection already launched at Baselworld 2011 under the evocative name of Fastrider. This new series of chronographs is expressly designed to measure short periods of time – exactly what is needed in high-speed racing. The Fastrider is a collection of steel chronographs fitted with a TUDOR calibre 7753 selfwinding movement, with a power reserve of 46 hours, in a 42mm waterproof case with a satin-polished finish. The watches are available with a leather strap, steel bracelet, or black fabric strap with three, contrasting, racing stripes, which have now become one of TUDOR’s distinctive stylistic features. On the Fastrider, the stripes are also echoed on the dial.

Porsche design has unveiled two very special products, one of which is particularly geared towards the Middle East. The first is the P’6520 Compass Watch which comes in two parts: the upper part is a precision three-hand watch, whose luminescent hands are driven by the automatic SW300 Sellita calibre. The date appears at 3 o’clock on the dial. The lower part of the watch opens to reveal a liquid compass that can be easily removed. The watch is available with a compass for both the northern as well as the southern hemisphere. In order to find one’s bearings with this instrument, a scratch-resistant mirror has been installed on the rear of the watch part and on top of the compass. When opened, the two mirrors click into place at 45 degrees.

The second product is a brand new Shisha. As part of the Porsche Design World Collection the Shisha is expected to come to the worldwide Porsche Design stores from end of July. The extraordinary Shisha combines high-quality materials such as

aluminium, stainless steel and glass with the timeless and unique design approach of the luxury brand. The Porsche Design Shisha is made in Germany and stands at a height of 55 centimetres. It only shows a discreet branding on the aluminium top and comes with a long flexible tube made out of TecFlex material, which is also used for the classic Porsche Design TecFlex writing tools.
