A novel way of placing Australia’s
mining industry in a global context
• The Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies
questions industry participants on their views of the
attractiveness of various jurisdictions for mining and
exploration investment.
• The survey assesses most jurisdictions at a national level,
but the large, mining economies of Australia, Canada, USA
and Argentina state-by-state. This allows individual
Australian states to be compared to sovereign nations (in a
highly subjective manner).
• So which Australian state corresponds to which
European, Asian, African or South American country?

Australia: a bit like the Andes a bit like
Scandinavia, and a bit French…?
• The Policy Potential Index suggests most Australian states are well
run – similar to Europe or well-run mining states such as Chile &
Botswana. The rural states outperform the urban states.
• The Best Practice Mineral Potential Index suggests Australia
contains its own Andes and Central African Copperbelt, though the
mineral prospectivity is apparently less in the eastern urban states.
• Overall the Investment Attractiveness Index suggests that for
geology and policy Australia’s rural states rank amongst the best
in the world, along with states such as Finland.
