Talk to a few Vera Blue fans in the crowd at Splendour in the Grass – where the singer popped up no less than three times,

cameoing onstage with Peking Duk and Slumberjack as well as her own epic set – and you’ll find any number of different things brought them there. One or two may have followed Celia Pavey since her appearance under her own name on The Voice in 2013; plenty will have been drawn in by the indelible chorus on Illy’s 2016 hit ‘Papercuts’, where Vera Blue’s haunting, hooky guest vocal was a standout. But mostly it’s simply that she boasts one of the most powerful voices in Australian music, as distinctive as her sheet of luminous red hair, and a songwriting talent to match that draws on her folkier roots to create daring and emotional future-pop.

With ‘Papercuts’ peaking at #14 on the TMN Hot 100 (and #2 Australian), her overall exposure isn’t insignificant for an artist whose focus til now has been almost entirely on developing an alt-radio audience.

“We haven't pounded down the door at commercial radio yet, and that’s intentional,” explains UMA managing director Mike Taylor. “The thing with her is she is unique and she doesn't just fit into a regular format, and those type of artists take little more time to get through, but when they do get through I think they permeate in ways that are much more unique and impactful.”

Her debut album Perennial entered the ARIA charts at #6 (with the tragic anomaly of Chester Bennington’s death bumping Linkin Park into the top spots), and she’s racked up over a million monthly listeners on Spotify and counting, showing just how hungry for the full-length her fans had grown. Vera Blue’s true range is clear for the first time – from the witchy beats of potential single ‘Lady Powers’ to the sly and soaring new anthem to independence, ‘Regular Touch’, which represents her strongest appeal to commercial FM yet.

“It's about having that sense of contentment and happiness, not needing attention or affection to feel complete and of purpose,” she says.

‘Regular Touch’ represents Vera Blue’s first truly global venture, with her UK and US labels – Virgin and Capitol respectively – following Universal’s lead by going to radio with the same single. And Pavey is currently doing promo in the US, where Perennial has been well set up by Capitol.

She tells TMN that the song was written during “a heavy time”, and collaborators Thom Macken and Gossling helped her find “hope and understanding” in her own response to emotional turmoil.

AUSTRALIAN SINGLES REPORT

With One Directioners Liam Payne and Niall Horan still locked at #1 and #2, the spotlight is focused a bit further down this week. Cracking the Top 10 at #6 from #13 is the June released ‘Fallin’ by Jessica Mauboy. Now just outside the Top 5, it’s her highest charting single since 2013’s ‘Pop A Bottle’ which peaked at #3 in late 2013.

Louis Tomlinsons’ ‘Back To You’ makes predicted moves further up the chart at #14 from #31, becoming his highest charting single on the Hot 100 now that it has outdone debut single ‘Just Hold On’. The debut single and collaboration with Steve Aoki only got as far as #19 on the chart.

Harry Styles is a cut above the rest this week with new single to radio ‘Two Ghosts’. Taken from his self-titled debut album, it’s the follow-up single to his Hot 100 record-breaking lead single ‘Sign Of The Times’.

While Styles is an obvious choice, there are still a host of other good tracks heading out, including new tunes from Lecrae, Pia Mia, and a stellar release from The Preatures, ‘Yanada’. It’s easily the best track heading to alternative radio.

Coming out with a clear lead at #1 on the Most Added chart is Dua Lipa’s fresh cut ‘New Rules’. Although the track scored just 22 additions, they were in all the right places. Nova had it at the top of their network additions list, as did Ash London Live, and both KIIS stations.

Taken from her debut self-titled album which came out earlier in June, it follows the success of previous single ‘Be The One’ (#3) and her feature spot on Martin Garrix’s ‘Scared To Be Lonely’ (#22). She’s yet to have a #1 to her name, but given how uniform the support from the key players has been, it’s looking to be a likely Top 10 contender at the very least.

Dean Lewis and Morgan Evans both saw some serious traction with their songs ‘Lose My Mind’ and ‘Kiss Somebody’ at #2 and #3, respectively.

The Belligerents return to the top of the Breakers chart once more with ‘Flash’ for a second (non-consecutive) week. It leads ahead of new cuts from Boo Seeka and Alex Lahey: ‘Turn Up The Light’ and ‘Every Day’s The Weekend’.

Coldplay make themselves known on the Hot 100 (not that they’re strangers with four #1s to their name) with ‘Miracles (Someone Special)’ which features Big Sean – not to be confused with an earlier non-album track titled ‘Miracles’. It hits #56 from #85, a move of 29 places. Amy Shark’s ‘Drive You Mad’ makes some leeway, hitting #69 from #87 and is the latest of many tracks from her Night Thinker EP earn love from radio.

Unlike last week, it looks like commercial radio is evenly spread across its support. Liam Payne is the Hit favourite with ‘Strip That Down’, while Niall Horan claims Nova with ‘Slow Hands’. Surprisingly, Shawn Mendes’ ‘There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back’ is still going strong on KIIS. The track is currently well into its 15th week on the Hot 100, 14 of which have been in the Top 10.

Fresh off the back of their mammoth sold out Off The Grid Tour which wrapped up in New Zealand over the weekend, Bliss n Eso today reveal the video for the fourth single from their #1 debuting highly acclaimed album Off The Grid - ‘Believe’ ft. Mario.

‘Believe’ once again displays Bliss n Eso’s musical diversity and features US R&B star Mario who offers his trademark spine-tingling vocal delivery on an emotional and empowering chorus.

“The song was an opportunity for us to open up a little more about our own personal struggles and express the inner dialogue we both have when we face our different adversitiesm”, explains MC Bliss.

Louis Tomlinson has stayed at the top of the Movers chart this week, as well as topping the Spotify Viral chart with his track ‘Back To You’ ft. Bebe Rexha & Digital Farm Animals. The track is the most recent of all the One Direction boys’ solo releases and is currently sitting at #14 on the Hot 100.

Kesha’s track ‘Praying’ has also remained at the #1 spot on the Shazam Future Hits chart, making this the third week that the track has topped the chart.

‘New Rules’ by Dua Lipa is sitting at the #3 spot on the Movers chart, and is also this week’s most added to radio.

Sydney-based duo Cosmo’s Midnight have taken the top spot on the Alternative Hot 100 with their track ‘Mind Off ’. The track is also #2 on the title j Hit List and has been the top track spun on triple j this week.

While Vance Joy’s newest single ‘Lay It On Me’ is still charting really well, the #1 song on the Australian Hot 100 goes to Jessica Mauboy this week with her track ‘Fallin’’, which has previously been at the #1 spot for two weeks in a row.

Crowns Of The South haven dominated the triple j Unearthed chart this week. The pop-rock four-piece have taken out all three top positions with their tracks ‘Summer’, ‘Seeya Seeya’, and ‘This Town’.

OVERVIEW

With a week until The Preatures drop their highly anticipated second album Girlhood, the Sydney four-piece today share their most significant single to date, ‘Yanada’. ‘Yanada’, means ‘moon’ in the Indigenous Sydney Dharug language and is a collaboration between respected Darug Songwoman Jacinta Tobin and frontwoman Isabella Manfredi.

Inspired by Sydney Theatre Company’s stirring adaptation of Kate Grenville’s award-winning novel The Secret River, as well as barrangal dyara (skin and bones) a work by Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi installation artist Jonathan Jones – The Preatures stunning new single takes inspiration from the Indigenous hisotry of the Sydney region.
