GOLDEN JUBILEE OF THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN MINT

2015 YEAR SETS

2015 Six Coin Uncirculated Year Set

Carded, UNC $25.00

On 22 February 1965, the Royal Australian Mint was opened by His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. This heralded the start of a new era: the first wholly Australian-operated mint, established to manufacturethe coins that would become such a strong part of Australia’s identity after the changeover to decimal currency. Since that day, over 14 billion circulating and collector coins have been produced at the Mint, becoming iconic works of art which have traversed the entire country.

The annual tradition of Australian Proof & Uncirculated years coin set continues in 2015, celebrating the golden anniversary, 50 years of mintingcoins for collectors and circulation. Next year's sets contain a new 50¢ featuring a honeycomb design as well as the regular cupro-nickel 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, al/bronze $1 and $2.

WESTERN FRONT 50¢ COLOURED CARDED, UNC $10.00

As part of the ANZAC Centenary 2014-2018 Commemorative Coin Program issued by the Royal Australian Mint, three new cupro-nickel 50¢ pieces have been issued with a mintage of 50,000 of each design dated 2014.

The fourth coin in the series is The Australian Flying Corps (AFC). The AFC was established in 1911, allowing Australia the distinction of being the only British dominion to have a flying corps in the First World War. Officers of the AFC are depicted, along with an early combat aircraft in commemoration of the pilots and their support to Australia's first world war allies.

The term ANZAC is forever entwined with the Gallipoli Campaign where the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps fought side-by-side. The fifth coin in the series features a silhouette of a soldier and landing boats over a backdrop of a map of the Dardanelles.

The Western Front was the major battle zone for British and Dominion Forces during the First World War and the location for many of Australia’s greatest contributions to the war effort. An artistic representation of soldierspaying tribute to fallen comrades on the Western Front, including a red coloured Remembrance Poppy featured on the reverse.

GEORGE III EMERGENCY COINAGEFor quite a number of years during the early part of King George III's reign, there were no silver half crowns and crowns struck, because of a shortage of the metal. A large number of captured Spanish American silver Half Dollars and Dollars (4 & 8 Reales) were available and were being unofficially used as currency. It was decided by the mint in 1797 to Countermark (C/M) the obverse of each with an oval stamp featuring the head of George III, with a nominal value of 4 shillings and ninepence.

A couple of sayings that the product depicted "The head of a fool on the neck of an ass" and "Two King's heads are not worth a crown".

It soon became apparent, large quantities of coins bearing forged C/M's were in circulation. The C/M's shape and size were altered around 1804 and the obverse featured an octagonal stamp with a larger head of the King, similar to those on the silver Maundy Penny. Both the $1/2's and $1's were to be known as emergency coinage with the host coin being struck from various Spanish American mints.
