from your skin and isolating it on the outer surface. The moisture will evaporate and also carry an anti-bacterial treatment on the yarn to keep it fresh and appealing. There are indeed psycho-logical benefits to wearing the new performance fabrics by keeping a lower skin temperature, reduced perceived physical exertion during exercise, and the increased ability to keep your focus.

We’ve used 4 types of fabrics for our 2013 range: Mini-Waffle, Cotton Backed Pique, Cotton Blend Pique & Birdseye.

Our performance fabrics go through the laundry very well and lasts longer due to the quality construction. They can be used all throughout the year and are per-fect for travelling since they are wrinkle free and neutralise odours.

BIRDSEYENew for 2013 is an elegant yet durable ‘Birdseye’ knit that gives another dimension to the Aussie Pacific range.Birdseye is an extremely lightweight, soft smooth silky feeling Polo that weighs only 155gm** This is a fabric knitted with a pattern of small diamonds, each having a dot in the centre or a surface texture of small uniform spots that suggest bird’s eyes

This fabric has been introduced into the 2013 range for the Flinders (14 colours for Men and 15 for Ladies) and the Endeavour (19 colours) for both Men & Ladies.Because both of these styles are a 100% Polyester fabric, they are per-fect for Dye Sub image on a white made up garment, embroidery or screen printing or both.** Fabric gsm or gm is the ‘grams per square metre’ weight of a knit (polos, tees, singlets, hoodies) or woven (shirts or jackets) fabric.

COTTON BACKED PIQUÉThis 180 gm fabric was introduced due to popular demand to the Aussie Pacific range in 2012 with the Paterson range which has been specifically knitted to have a comfortable layer of cotton (20%) against your skin while the outer fabric is polyester.In 2013, 5 additional colours have been added to the existing Paterson colours and there are two new Polo introductions with the Keira (5 colours in a Raglan Sleeve) and Panorama Polos (12 colours).There is also a Winter co-ordinate Hoodie for both the Pater-son & Panorama Polos with both flat front and zip through.Also in a pique knit and while not cotton backed is the Reef Polo, a cotton blend Piqué knit fabric that amalgamates both the DriWear™ and cotton yarns into a light yet breathable stylish polo.

Piqué Knit is pronounced “P-K” and is the fabric that is most associated with the famous original Lacoste Alligator Polo shirt since 1933 and it is also sometimes called a mesh piqué and is characterised by a textured fabric face with lots of tiny holes with a fabric back that is smooth.

Piqué construction is designed to pull moisture from the skin and wick it into the air by keeping the fabric and the wearer relatively dry and cool. Before the days of high tech and high performance Polyester yarns, Piqué was the original perfor-

mance fabric and in our fabric it is combined with a uniquely created 5 side yarn to give both up to date and traditional moisture removal. Our Reef Polo is a blend of & Cotton also in a piqué knit.

MINI-WAFFLEMini-Waffle is sometimes known as a honeycomb fabric and is knitted in a way which makes it very absorbent. The mini-waffle weave also allows air to flow into and through the garment so that it dries more quickly because the surface of the fabric is textured rather like an edible waffle, hence the name. This texture gives more surface area for absorption than a

normal flat surface and because it is knitted is more durable, it is not a mechanical or chemi-cal process that can be washed off after thor-ough or heavy use.

Weighing in at 160gm, our Mini-Waffle has formed the backbone of the Aussie Pacific range and is kept in large quantities of both dyed and undyed fabric in China to facilitate speedy stock on floor replenishment or cus-

tom made cut & sew or dye sublimated garments.To date, one of the most popular styles has been the Eureka Story with these Polos available in a massive 25 colours, the Tees in 23 colours and Singlets also 25 colours. These gar-ments can be combined with the luxurious feeling Pongee fabric Tracksuits (18 colours).Other Mini-Waffle Polos include the 2012 introduced Botany Story which is joined in 2013 by a feminine style Ladies Polo in 9 colours and a specific lady fit Singlet in 3 colours. The Botany also has Tee, Singlet and Hoodie co-ordinates.

Tried and true best selling styles in the now famous Mini-Waffle DriWear™ include The Murray Polo (16 colours-Mens , Ladies & kids), The Premier Polo & Singlet story (17 Mens & 18 Ladies colours), the understated but elegant Yarra Polo for Men & Women (11 Mens and 12 Ladies colours) and the Sport Shorts in 8 colours.

FLEECES2 different fabric compositions are used for our Fleece in a cotton rich knitted fabric featuring 80% Cotton (Kozi and Hotham styles for men, ladies & kids) and also a 35% Cotton (Botany, Cronulla, Paterson, Mawson, Panorama and Huxley styles for adults and juniors) both blended with Polyester.The fleece fabrics we use have a smooth outer surface mak-ing it seem flat and on the inner is the texture and this is why it is often referred to as a brushed finish, it’s the most common finish. Some features of fleece are that it provides warmth without undue weight, is soft to the touch, does not normally shrink, ravel or run and is easy to work with by printing or embroidery

especially where the cotton content is high.

SOFT SHELLSoft Shell technology was created by big global brand outdoor and sportswear manufacturers because it allowed them to develop and offer so-called “technical” or “functional” cloth-ing which was optimised for the particular demands of the purpose for which it was designed by having something that was light, durable, wind and rain resistant.

Synthetic materials such as polyester based fabrics are good choices as they do not absorb moisture. This fabric features usually at least three layers which are identified as : 1/ an In-ner layer -providing comfort by keeping the skin dry, we use a micro-fleece: 2/ a Mid layer - to provide warmth and 3/ a Shell layer - to protect from wind and water with this outer layer working as the protection cover over the other two layers.These layers are bonded together.

We offer the Stirling Jacket as part of our range to offer a multi-purpose jacket that is easily at home in any environment where looking good yet staying warm & dry is a pre-requisite.Coming in both a Mens and stylish fitted Ladies jacket, we feel the technology in this jacket matches our technology.

SCREEN PRINTINGON POLYESTER PERFORMANCE FABRICSometimes you may want to print a message or sponsor, club name or team on performance fabric apparel.Dye migration is a problem that can affect many screen print-ed garments even a day or longer after printing if the incorrect inks and processes are used.Whilst this problem is not common to the Aussie Pacific fab-rics, it is always best to be cautious on any polyester fabrics..Aussie Pacific suggests that to avoid possible dye migration and client disruption to use:

• Common sense, chances are if there are deep colours involved then there is a fair chance of migration regard-less of the type of fabric.

• Put down a Wilflex Carbon Grey base under the entire image to prevent dye migration (when the ink is cured through the tunnel dryer at 152 degrees) and for best results use 43T White Mesh screen.

• Put down a White that can then be printed directly over the entire grey image using the same film on a new screen using 43T Yellow and then

• any addition colours can put down as a normal printing procedure.

• Please note, Aussie Pacific will not entertain any screen printing claims if this procedure is not used. This in-cludes printing on polos, tees, singlets, hoodies or jackets.

Dye Sublimation is a relatively new techni-cal process for printing designed themes using colour and imagination into fabric (not on to it). Chances are you’ve already got or seen dye sublimated garments in everyday use and of course, live or on TV predominantly in sports, events, promotions and some fashion.

But what if you are not creative?Don’t stress! You can go and discuss your requirements with decoration professionals who will use their expertise to make sure you get your unique piece or you can go on-line and design your own Dye Sublimated apparel at www.aussiepacific.com.au, then take the design to your professional and we’ll custom make you a garment with a mini-mum of only 20 pieces, how good is that?

With Dye Sublimation (referred to as Dye Sub) the graphics are computer generated and transferred by printing to special paper using special inks which are then transferred through heat and pressure into the fabric to give you a unique piece of

clothing with the image or pattern embed-ded forever. The image can be all over from seam to

seam, won’t fade, crack or fall off.These garments are made in our China factory using the latest technology dye sub printers and heat presses. Dye Sub can only be done

successfully on 100% Polyester fabrics which especially suit the Aussie Pacific fabrics. This process ensures the graphics in the fabric are permanent never losing any detail or vibrancy yet the moisture removal and anti-bacterial properties of the yarn remains unchanged.

Dye Sublimated sports uniforms and apparel are popular as you can uniquely have any logo designs, patterns, numbers, names or sponsors printed onto your garments permanently using a fantastic range of colours & artistic techniques. Different types of our fabrics can be used and we can use sublimation printing to create virtually any sports uniform, promo-tional, event, corporate or retail garment.

Aussie Pacific garment designers have taken into account the many different methods of decorating or monogramming apparel. Here we look at the 3 main methods of decoration yet there are others such as Digitally Printed transfers and Screen Printed transfers.

Because your Brand should be synonymous with a quality garment, then it makes sense to portray the way your Brand is perceived. Today, any decoration goes on anything, a far change from the not too distant days where a small chest print or embroidery was the norm. Splash prints, tone on tone, print/emb. combos, badges, over seam printing and foiling in abstract patterns and fonts making the opposites attract. SCREEN-PRINTINGTo understand the time and care that is taken into each silk screen printed job, we thought it would be helpful to indicate what happens each time a job is printed. The first step is artwork. Once the artwork is finalised, it gets sent for processing. From there, and from your printing instructions your printer will come up with a composite proof for you so you can see what your design will look like on the t-shirts (or polos sweatshirts or other garments). This will confirm the specific print locations you have instructed to print.After the art has been approved, then film is output to make the screens. All of the art is then pre-registered and checked for detail and quality. The first step in the screen department is to coat the screens with a photosensitive emul-sion. Next, the screen dries,

and it is placed on the vacuum light table and exposed with a 3000 watt metal halide light. After being exposed the screens are then washed out with a pressure washer at around 1300 psi. Once the image is washed out, it is double checked with the films for accuracy.Each colour in a design needs a screen and each screen must be blocked, taped, setup, and squeegeed. Just imagine if we had to do this each time a t-shirt was ordered. You can see why screen printing was designed to print quality in bulk.For smaller runs, normally a 4-6 carousel is used. For larger runs with more colours, an au-

tomatic machine with 10-18 heads. By “flash-ing” or drying the ink between each colour layer, a bright, professional quality print, with years of wear and tear is achievable.

MACHINE EMBROIDERY A term that describes a specially designed, computerised, embroidery or sewing-embroi-dery machine to automatically create a design from a pre-made pattern that is input into the machine.In 1980, the first computer graphics embroi-dery design system was introduced, running on a mini-computer. Technology was en-hanced in 1982 with the introduction of the first multi-user system that allowed more than one person to be working on a different part of the embroidery process, vastly streamlining production times.Computerised machine embroidery has rapidly grown in popularity since the late 1990s.

Design Files or ‘Masters’ are typically down-loaded to a computer and then transferred to an embroidery machine which can then be used to stitch out the embroidery designs.

SUBLIMATIONThe basic dye sublimation process uses spe-cial heat-sensitive dyes to print graphics and text onto special

transfer paper. The paper is then placed on a 100% polyester item and both are placed into a heat press. When the heating cycle is completed, the im-age on the paper has been transferred to the item and has actually reformed into or under-neath the coated surface. Sublimation is always done on a polyester, polymer, or polymer-coated item. At high temperatures, the solid dye converts into a gas without ever becoming a liquid. The same high temperature opens the pores of the polymer and allows the gas to enter. When the temperature drops, the pores close and the

gas reverts to a solid state. It has now become a part of the polymer.This is why dye sublimation can’t be done on natural materials, such as 100% cotton. Natural fibres and non-coated materials which have no “pores” to open.

A dye impregnates colour into (not on to) a material and this colour change is permanent. Sublimation refers to changes from the solid, to the gaseous state without becoming liquid. A polymer consists of large molecules made up of a linked series of re-peated simple molecules. Dye sublimation refers to solid dye particles that are changed into gas using heat and pressure, which then bond with any poly-mers present and change back into a solid.This means the composi-tion of the polymer has changed, no fading, crack-ing, peeling because the colour/s is now part of the fabric.

The fluid stored in the inkjet cartridge is the carrier of the dye. The carrier stays on the paper and only the dye migrates from the paper to the substrate. The dye has little or no colour un-til heated, so what you see on the paper usually looks nothing like

the final transferred image.Dark materials cannot be used with the subli-mation process on made up garments.Remember; This is not ink. This is a dye. Garments decorated with a dye sublimation transfer cannot be removed like images on shirts decorated with screen printing. Again, this is not ink that sits on top of the fabric; it is a dye that penetrates the fibre of the fabric. The dye particles are designed to bond with polyester, and ignore everything else. It is like trying to mix oil and water with most natural materials.

You can rely on our garments to carry a mini-mum of a rating 30 (very good) to a 50+ rat-ing of excellent protection.If you are outdoors working or playing sport then you can rest assured that our gar-ments are protecting your skin from those harsh rays even if the sun isn’t shining.Polyester contains an ester(benzene) ring that absorbs UV light. Factors that affect the level of sun protection provided by a fabric, in approximate order of importance, in-clude weave, colour, weight, stretch, and wetness. The more open/less dense the fabric, the worse the protection and the darker the col-our, the more dye, the better the protection. Getting fabric wet reduces the protection as much as half.

We dye our fabrics to match the interna-tional colour pallet referred to as PMS. The Pantone® Matching System (PMS) is a standardised colour matching system, utilising the Pantone® numbering system for identify-ing colours in both textile dyes and inks. By standardising these colours, different manu-facturers in different locations or countries can all reference a Pantone® numbered colour, making sure colours match .The most commonly referenced colours are in the Pantone® solids palette. The Pantone® Solid palette consists of 1,114 colours, identified by three or four digit num-bers, followed by a C, U, Or M suffix. Originally designed for the graphics industry, the Pantone® solids palette is now used by a wide range of industries, and is the most com-monly used palette. For example, Pantone 199 Red can be iden-tified as Pantone 199C (C= Coated Paper), Pantone 199U (U= Uncoated Paper) or Pantone 199M (M=Matte Paper).So, when you say Red you could mean any

number of shades.Every good Screen Print Company uses an ink mixing system that corresponds with the Pan-tone® Matching System (PMS).Despite the exact nature of Pantone® colours, what you see is not always what you get when screen printing on textiles and PMS ‘Fan’ Books come in coated and uncoated versions.Textiles do not come in coated and uncoated versions as paper does so C or coated colours are the best match for screen printing. Stand-ard plastisol screen print ink has little shine by nature and more closely resembles the look of the coated PMS Colours.Screen printing on dark garments requires an underbase so the true colour of the ink can be seen vibrantly because without an underbase the ink colours are absorbed by the garment.An underbase is a layer of white ink before the design colours are printed and some lighter garments can be printed with no underbase depending on the colour of the garment and the ink colour.
