While you are browsing the latest Sewin’ Times, my staff and I will be in Minneapolis attending Quilt Market. Quilt Market is “THE” event for shop owners to see all the latest in sewing and quilting. While we are there, we will be focusing on great new ideas for our classes and clubs and meeting with hundreds of vendors who will show us the latest products on the market. The hard part is choosing what will work best for you, our customers. We will be doing our best and hoping that you’ll be as happy and excited about what we saw and purchased as we are.

Now that our new Williamsville shop is up and running we plan to do some updat-ing in our East Aurora location. Watch for changes, new fabric collections, and the latest books, patterns and notions.

I also want to mention our Martha Pullen event which will be held this fall. Get your name on the list, you won’t want to miss this event! Watch your email for details.

THREAD!It’s not your grandmother’s thread anymore. I will start by saying if thread is on a wooden spool or you can’t read the label, get rid of it. Some thread is short staple which means it is not as strong and will produce a lot of fuzz which could be left in the tension disks. The best thread to use is a long staple thread which produces a consistent stitch, a constant diameter with little to no residue left in the tensions.

We carry several excellent thread options. Mettler thread is an excellent product for general construction, strength and durability. The polyester thread will not fade or break down with time. Metrosene plus is “flat” in color and is the best for general sewing. For embroidery we have several options. polyester is the best for for strength, durability, and ability to hold color, along with a large selection of colors. Mettler polysheen is a smaller spool but offers a shinny appear-ance including varigated (multi colored) thread. If you prefer larger spools and excellent quality try Isacord and Floriani. They are both excellent.

When quilting and piecing you may prefer a natural fiber such as cotton. We offer Auifil which is made from an extra long staple of mercerized Egyptian cotton. The diameter of the thread is consistent as well as the twist. Twist is the force that consolidates the fibers and piles of the thread. If the twist is too low the yarns may fray and break - if it is too high is may cause snarling, looping, knots or spillage. After research and customer input, Aurifil has found the best processing procedure to produce the most consistent and dependable thread on the market. Aurifil thread comes in several weights so remember that THE HIGHER THE NUMBER THE THINNER THE THREAd!
