AUMA automates valves

Industrial processes require automa-tion and automation requires actua-tors. Reliably operating actuators arecrucial to the safety and economic via-bility of industrial plants.

However, industrial processes vary. Each industry has its specific require-ments and many actuator applicationsrequire individual solutions. Applica-tions vary between OPEN/CLOSEand modulating duty; watertight, sub-mersible and explosion-proof loca-tions and a wide array of control sys-tem interface requirements. In orderto make industrial automation possi-ble, great flexibility is demanded of theactuator and the actuator manufac-turer.

For this reason AUMA has a wideproduct range with electric multi-turn,part-turn, linear and lever actuators,as well as several different valve gear-boxes. Actuator controls includingmicro-processor based controls and avariety of digital communication inter-faces, enable the optimal connectionof the motor operated valves to theprocess control system. This makes itpossible for AUMA to provide a suit-able automation solution for virtuallyevery valve.

AUMA has been developing andbuilding electric actuators and valvegearboxes for over 30 years. Duringthat time AUMA has acquired exper-tise which cannot be surpassed.AUMA is one of the world-wide lead-ing electric actuator manufacturers.

This brochure provides an overviewon AUMA products and services.Detailed information can berequested from AUMA or can be foundon the internet at www.auma-usa.comor www.auma.com.

Actuator Controls

Actuators with controlsActuator controls with integral pilotdevices are available for SA actuatorsup to size 16.1 and all part-turn actua-tors SG and AS. They form the optimalinterface between process control andactuator.

The controls can be supplied in a vari-ety of versions. Whether parallel controlor via digital communucation, whethersimple OPEN-CLOSE functionality oran integral PID control – almost everyprocess integration imaginable is pos-sible.

In planning, commissioning and opera-tion, AUMA actuator controls have aclear advantage over a remote controlcenter. The economy of integral con-trols has a positive impact on overallplant cost.

The various AUMA control configura-tions provide the flexibility for control bymany methods:Contact closureAnalog signalDigital communications:

Actuator Controls

Multi-turn SA actuator with AUMATICintegral controlsThe microprocessor controlled AUMATICoffers a variety of functions - from posi-tioning to operating data logging. Fieldbuscontrol is possible. The controls are designed for all actua-tors with 3-phase AC and 1-phase ACmotors. When furnished with the MWGcontrol unit, the AUMATIC provides thecapability for non-intrusive setting.

Part-turn SG actuators withAUMATIC integral controls. The AUMATIC is designed for allactuators with 3-phase AC and1-phase AC motors.

Part-turn AS actuators withVARIOMATIC integral controls. The VARIOMATIC is designed for the AS actautor.

The controls cannot only be mounted directly to theactuators, but also separately on a wall bracket. This isrecommended when: the controls and therefore also pilot devices would be

difficult to access. heavy vibrations or high ambient temperatures within

the vicinity of the valve could disturb the electronics.

Service

The reliability of actuators is crucialto the safety of entire plants. There-fore it is imperative to choose anappropriate configuration of actua-tors and to integrate the actuatoroptimally into the process controlsystem.

Actuators are found in all industysectors. The resulting variety of dif-ferent requirements makes exten-sive know-how necessary even inthe planning phase. The carefulselection of the devices is the pre-requisite for smooth installation andcommissioning. However, if a faultshould occur during operation, itmust be eliminated as soon as possi-ble.

This defines the AUMA service con-cept. And for this reason AUMAoffers a range of services.

Advice via telephone / e-mail

At AUMA, engineers are available ascompetent contacts in every phase

of the project. This means thatquestions can be answered

quickly andplans can befinalized earlyin the designprocess. If adimensionaldrawing or awiring diagramis required atshort notice, the necessary

documents are quickly available viafax or e-mail.

Internet

The AUMA internet presentation(www.auma-usa.com or www.auma.com) offers up-to-date and extensiveinformation around the clock.General information, wiring dia-grams, CAD drawings, operationinstructions and lots more are alsoaccessible on these web sites. Havea look. It is well worth a visit.

Trouble-shooting,commissioning and maintenance

With subsidiaries and representa-tives based throughout North Amer-ica and worldwide, AUMA has thenecessary infrastructure to reactquickly and competently to customerrequirements. Optimally equippedwith tools, parts and knwowldge,AUMA technicians can eliminatefaults quickly.

Furthermore, apart from trou-ble-shooting, several additional ser-vices are offered. The commission-ing service for actuators ensurescorrect function from the beginning.

Automation / modernization

Valves are often still fully functional aftermany decades, however, the actuatortechnology is no longer compatible withthe new process control system andneeds to be replaced. AUMA automa-tion-centers provide everything neces-sary to modernize the actuator technol-ogy in an older plant - from the prepara-tion of a quotation, the construction andmanufacturing of special adapters tocommissioning and training.
