HEARTBEAT OF P.U.L.S.E. EMBODIED

P.U.L.S.E. is an SA Chartered organization on Binghamton University’s campus that aims to educate, elevate, and empower women of color, however we are not exclusive. To achieve this, we provide a safe haven to openly discuss issues that affect us such as gender, sex, and self-esteem as well as provide networking opportunities to build a community. Furthermore, we strive to work towards the prosperity of women through volunteer efforts in the Binghamton community.

Dear Readers, !The Executive Board of Powerful United Ladies Striving to Elevate (P.U.L.S.E.), welcomes

you this Fall semester! We hope you have all had a smooth transition into this new academic year. !

I am so thrilled to contribute to the ongoing development of P.U.L.S.E. as a new member on the Executive Board this semester. As Publications Coordinator, I will make it my duty to

keep you, the general body, in sync with what is going on with P.U.L.S.E and this publication will keep you connected with us outside of our weekly meetings and events

throughout the semester.

This publication’s theme is “Back to School” and is aimed to introduce P.U.L.S.E. to the general body and showcase what we are all about. We intend to amplify our annual events,

such as our “Ladies First“ meeting and our Leadership Conference, as well as add new and interesting events and

topics along the way. !As the new semester is well under way, we acknowledge that this theme is applicable to you. You are all about to

embark in a new experience, either as an upperclassman or a newly admitted student. We encourage you to utilize this time to revive yourself and come into the school year with a

new attitude and lots of energy! !Come out and support our events, and become a part of the

safe haven that we have aimed to create for our general body members. Get ready to become Educated, Elevated,

and Empowered!


Dear Readers, !A hearty welcome back to my fellow Upperclassmen, and for the Freshman,

congratulations on beginning your college career. !Chartered only 4 years ago, P.U.L.S.E. has made humongous strides on this campus to create a safe

network of support for women of color. Due to the undying dedication of the entire Executive Board, we have prepared a semester’s worth of events and proudly invite you to come out, as they are sure to

be beneficial to all. !As we kick off this new semester, I am positive that this Board of ambitious and powerful women will

carry the torch. The new Executive Board truly embodies the meaning of P.U.L.S.E. and is committed to build relationships with both

students and faculty and go the extra mile to educate and uplift women of color, on a social,

cultural, and educational level. !One of the greatest pleasures of my position is

serving you all as general body members. My hope is that you take advantage of the opportunities P.U.L.S.E. will be providing. As our organization

continues to grow, you can count on us to keep our focus where it belongs – on Educating, Elevating,

and Empowering. !I look forward to all of the exciting events P.U.L.S.E. has in store this semester, and above all, I am eager

We are a group of beautiful, educated, and

empowered women, striving for excellence

and unity by providing a safe haven to share

knowledge and discuss issues that affect us.

A group of educated and sophisticated women of color

came together and realized that there was no group on

campus that catered to women of color. They formed the

Women’s Meeting, now known as P.U.L.S.E., that discussed

various topics that concern women. P.U.L.S.E. becameSA chartered on March 8, 2010.

We EDUCATE, ELEVATE, and EMPOWER.

We create a comfortable environment where

we can uplift ourselves and build strong

bonds of sisterhood and friendship while

uniting women of color and discussing

issues that pertain to you, as a woman.

Junior, Economics Major “I am looking forward to planning

and executing a wonderful leadership conference as well as

reaching more general body members and making PULSE a

safe space for them.”

“As President for this academic year, I am so excited about our

growth as an organization, and I would like to extend our network to

all women of color on campus and in the Binghamton community.”



Ashley Duran Fundraiser

Junior, Human Development Major “As a Fundraiser, I want to continue to maintain a close relationship with other executive boards, local businesses, and

university administrators as well as fundraise as much money as possible to

continue to provide events for our general body.”

Cassandre Lolo Treasurer

Junior, Integrative Neuroscience Major “This year, I am optimistic to see growth in the funds allocated to our organization. I envision P.U.L.S.E.’s events being more upscale than

ever before because of the efficiency and success in managing funds, while also working heavily in fundraising. P.U.L.S.E only wishes to

plan the best of the best for our wonderful supporters, and that we shall do!”



Rahilou Diallo Historian/SA Representative

Sophomore, Human Development Major “As Historian, I look forward

to capturing the different emotions and facial expressions our general

body members show during our GB’s. My biggest expectation for P.U.L.S.E. is

for our organization to continue to expand and attract a more diverse group

of women.”

Toni-Ann Black Co-Public Relations

Sophomore, Nursing Major “As Co-Public Relations, I want to spread our mission throughout our

campus. Our entire campus will know who PULSE is no matter what. I want a

diverse group of individuals to know who we are, what we stand for and attend

more of our meetings and events.”



Emily Abreu Educational Coordinator

Junior, Mathematics & French Major “As an educational coordinator, I want to

build a strong connection with the girls from the Boys and Girls Club. I want them to feel

comfortable coming to me about any problems they have. I hope that through the workshops they inspire to receive a higher

education. Overall this year, I want to make a positive impact on their lives.”

are organized and keep us focused on our goal of growing as

forward to showing the general body what P.U.L.S.E. is all about and allowing them to

stay connected with us any time and any place outside of our weekly meetings. I am so excited to contribute to the Executive

Board any way that I can and see P.U.L.S.E. blossom even more.”

Coordinator, I expect to conduct and head both the Fall Clothing Drive as well as the

5Th Annual Breast Cancer Walk. My role is to involve Binghamton University

Students as well as individuals in Broome County and surrounding areas in

P.U.L.S.E. community service events.”

for P.U.L.S.E. as well as the students of Binghamton University where they can be

BE RESPONSIBLE: Being away at college means that your parents are not here to set your curfew and your professors will not be chasing you down for your assignments. This is the time to grow into a mature and professional adult!

TIME MANAGEMENT: Use a planner or some type of organizational tool to keep your assignments and priorities in order.

MAKE CONNECTIONS: Go to your professors’ office hours and get to know them! They will remember you and they will see that you are making an effort.

CAMPUS RESOURCES: Free tutoring services, academic advising, and resume building at the Career Development Center! The CDC is located on the ground floor of the University Union, Room 133.

GET INVOLVED: There is something for everybody on this campus! Put yourself out there, meet new people, and get involved in something that you truly enjoy.

HAVE FUN: Create a healthy balance between your academics and your social life!

Sabor Latino: Tres Leches

Cake Cake Ingredients

• 1 stick butter, unsalted and softened• 1 cup sugar

• 2 eggs• 1 ½ cups all purpose flour

• 1 ¾ teaspoons baking powder• ½ cup whole milk

• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Three Milks Sauce Ingredients • 12 ounce can evaporated milk• 14 ounce can condensed milk

• 1 cup heavy cream• 1 teaspoons vanilla extract

• ¼ cup spiced rum (optional)

Whipped Topping Ingredients • 1 cup sugar

• 2 cups heavy cream• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

1. Using a mixer at medium speed, combine butter and sugar until well incorporated.2. Add eggs, one at a time. 3. At low speed, add flour, baking powder, milk and vanilla extract. Slowly increase speed and mix until smooth.4. Pour into an approximately 11x7 greased deep baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.5. Place on a cooling rack until completely cooled. 6. Pour all sauce ingredients into a blender and mix until well combined.7. With a fork, pierce holes all over the cooled cake.8. Pour three milks mixture over cake, reserving ½ cup (tip: use a strainer to reduce pouring foam) 9. Cover and refrigerate for two hours (preferably overnight) to allow the cake to soak it up. 10. Place both ingredients in mixer using a whisk attachment. Start at low speed and slowly increase to high until whipped. 11. Spread over cake and serve or refrigerate until ready to serve.

Idalia HerreraOur Woman Who Leads this month is Idalia

Herrera, Class of 2014 Binghamton University Graduate. During her time here at Binghamton, she had strong involvement and impact both on

and off campus. On campus, Idalia served as the first

Educational Coordinator of P.U.L.S.E. for the 2011-2012 academic year, then went on to serve

as the Community Service Events Coordinator and lastly the President of P.U.L.S.E. for her

senior year. In addition to P.U.L.S.E., Idalia was initiated into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,

Incorporated, Rho Xi Chapter during the Spring of 2012. She held the positions of Second-Vice

President, Secretary, and Parliamentarian for the Zeta Phi Beta Executive Board.

For her community, Idalia took on the roles of a Community School Assistant for the Broome County Promise Zone in 2014 as well as a

Volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club and a participant in the U-Turn Program within the

Black Student Union. Currently, Idalia is a preschool teacher in

Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn as a part of Teach for America NYC. Simultaneously, Idalia is

pursing her Masters of Science in Education at CUNY Hunter College and getting a dual

certification in Early Childhood Education and Special Education for Birth-2nd Grade.

It is evident that Idalia is a prime example of a woman who illuminates leadership and

excellence. Best of luck to Idalia!
