PROJECTS/EVENTS August 17 – The library leadership held the annual Staff Development Day. This year senior staff took teaching roles throughout the day, rather than bringing in an outside speaker. Major emphasis was on customer service and reference interviews with additional educational opportunities in Microsoft Outlook, Deaf Services, the VirtualBbranch (website), and Paylocity. Short sessions for all staff included instruction in filling out incident reports, how to use Tumblebooks, studio services and more. Ron brought in three officers from the Hanover Park Police department for a very effective Active Shooter workshop and drill. An all staff photo was taken mid-day.

August 24, 2018 -- We held our third (and last) Streamwood Farmers Market for the community. Due to rain, we held the market indoors. Although not as big of a turnout as in previous months, we all had fun. Kraig Kenning arrived early and played guitar until noon. Everyone was invited to participate in a scavenger hunt which brought individuals to each vendor booth. Those who completed the hunt were rewarded with an emoticon ball. We had a few new volunteers this month, Sandy from the Streamwood Chamber arrived by 7 am to help get vendors to their tables while Jen and Lauren from the Park District assisted Jean at the Park District table. We are estimating about 150 individuals attended the market. – Kris Kenney

• All our passport acceptance agents are now certified. Our Library information is now included on State.gov as a location for passport application help. We’ve had inquiries about necessary documentation and our appointment procedure. I’ve lead three additional training sessions to reinforce our in-house procedures. Our first appointments will be in September.

• I’ve been accepted as a proctor by two additional colleges for student learners requesting proctoring service this fall semester.

• The Internal Revenue Service has sent information on the upcoming tax session. I’ve ordered forms for TFOP (tax forms outlet program) and contacted our VITA (volunteer income tax assistance) coordinator.

• Kevin Brown, Bridget Kerans, our volunteer, Sara, and I have continued to aggressively weed our depository collections so our collection is more vital and accessible for our community.

• Kathleen Ryczek assisted Loralee Clarke and Natalya Sots with the removal of their artwork to install a new display of Jessie Lee’s paintings in the Marlene Deuel art gallery. Kathleen also traveled to the Hanover Township Senior Center to scout their on-site artists for future displays at the Library.

• Kathleen continued an eye-catching “back to school” display highlighting our print sources as well as our databases. Barbara Scheffki compiled a list of our new documents to create an appealing display.

• Come check out our newest magazines, Pioneer Woman, and Yoga Journal.

Blanca Stephens represented the library at the Hanover Park Police Department's COPS Day Picnic event, held on Friday August 10, 2018. This was an outdoor event, held in the evening, the turnout was excellent with a lot of families. This was perhaps one of the most crowded events of the year which made for fabulous outreach. The event was predominantly visited by Spanish speakers. We used the Plinko game for giveaways and provided information about how to get a library card in English and in Spanish. We also gave children's calendars for the next two following months. The lines of people visiting our table were consistent throughout the event from beginning to end!

• With Ron, I present on the Customer Experience for Staff Development Day. • Submitted circulation and collection statistics for the IPLAR report. • The Technical Services and Circulation Services supply closets were consolidates. All supplies are

now in the old TS closet. The former Circ. closet is now storage for donated books for our ongoing book sale.

• New video games are now stored behind the circulation desk. Patrons pick up the empty cases from the shelves and bring to circulation where staff will add the disc or cartridge to the case. This is being done to curtail the high theft of video games.

• Most of the Extraordinary Things were received, cataloged and processed. Most items are stored in a cabinet behind the circulation desk.

• The Greenbrook Action Plan was revised and put into effect! • We had a great candidate for our open programmer position, but unfortunately she had to decline our job offer.

The job has been re-posted and we’re keeping our fingers crossed. In other staffing news, Marissa Ferreri’s last day was August 3, which leaves us with a second open position.

• We’ve been weeding the picture book collection, and Jen has been helping out doing some weeding in nonfiction. In the coming months we’ll probably tackle the Spanish collection, since it’s starting to look a little ratty.

• Lisa began scheduling outreach visits at the end of August – which has been a little challenging since we are down two staff members. The good news is that teachers want us to come back!

• Lisa O. had more outside programming with Bubbles and Chalk • Meet your Hometown Heroes: Hanover Park EMS was the final installment of the Hometown Heroes’

Series. Twenty-two patrons learned about first aid and the responsibilities of an EMS. They were also given an honorary badge then a tour of an ambulance. Children were allowed to climb into the driver’s seat for the perfect photo opportunity

• Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles was a smash hit • We have a new cash register and are now able to accept credit card payments • Angela Reitz submitted her two week notice
