Our Vision Statement
St Peter’s Church Leckhampton exists to love and worship God,
to serve our neighbours and to pass on the faith in Jesus Christ.
The Parish Prayer
Loving God
Open our eyes that we might see you.
Open our ears that we might hear you.
Open our hearts and minds that we
Might respond to you and bring others to know you.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ
Our Lord who lights our way.
Amen
+++++++++++++++++++++++ Parish Magazine Binding Would you like to sponsor the binding of the Parish Magazine? Each year we have the twelve issues bound into one hardback volume to keep in the archives. A donation of £25 would pay for one year. A number of people have done so and have sponsored a year that had a particular importance to them, and had their generosity recorded inside the front cover. 2017 and 2018 are now bound, but there are some past years still available if one is particularly special to you.

Prayers are said daily at St Peter’s, at 8.30am and 5.00pm. We invite you to request prayer for people or situations that weigh heavily on your heart and mind at this time so that we can include them on a regular basis. Unless you ask otherwise, we will pray for them for two weeks from the time we receive your request. You would also have to let us know if you would also like the prayer to be used in Sunday services.
If you would like to ask for a prayer, you may telephone, email or write to the Vicar (see back cover; emails may also be sent via St Peter’s website), or you may prefer to leave the prayer on the board beside the door in church. If you name somebody, please be sure that they are happy for this to happen; you may choose to use just a Christian name or be even less specific. You are; of course, welcome to join us for daily prayers at any time.

Insight
I recently informed you that life begins at 50 and that it was in fact the new 30.
But when does life truly begin? Perhaps Peter and Paul can help us answer that...
For St. Paul it was a moment as he journeyed on the road to Damascus – a
moment of obedience, a moment of insight, a moment of repentance, all wrapped
into one literally blinding moment. It was an absolute turning point in his life,
signified by the changing of his name from Saul to Paul, and the yet more radical
change in his attitude towards Jesus Christ and his followers.
In the life of St. Peter, we see a different pattern. For Peter there is a series of
moments, a succession of new beginnings where life is transformed in the
‘company’ of Jesus Christ. There is the moment of obedience where he leaves
his nets by the shore of Lake Galilee in order to follow Jesus, an act of almost
blind faith, a submission to an unknown future. But this is followed by moments of
unworthiness and denial; which quickly become moments of repentance as he
realises that Jesus loves him regardless.
Then in John's Gospel we are given the moment of reconciliation, as he reverses
his three-fold denial with a three-folded affirmation of love for Jesus, who calls
him to ‘tend my sheep’.
But in between these two moments, there is a moment of insight, when Jesus
asks, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ And Simon Peter answers, ‘You are the
Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Of all Peter’s moments of new beginning, this
is the one where, like Saul on the Damascus Road, Jesus gives Peter his new
name, Petros, meaning ‘rock’ or ‘stone’. This muddled, unreliable, unthinking
fishermen is now the foundation of the new community into which millions of
future Christians will be reborn. This is a moment of insight about who Jesus is,
and about the significance of Jesus for the life of the world.
Peter has many moments where life begins again. But this seems to be the
moment where he is truly reborn. What marks out this moment of insight over the
other moments of obedience and repentance? Well, perhaps it’s because
- 9 -
obedience and repentance are acts of human will, whereas insight is an act of
grace. And that is a reminder to us that for all the necessity of our responses to
God – for all the need on our part to make new beginnings – it is by God’s grace
that life begins.
Many of us will not experience a moment like Paul’s, instead, I would suggest,
most of us are like Peter, where there are many moments of obedience and
repentance. Perhaps the challenge is to be more aware of those moments of
insight and know that we are loved. So let’s give thanks for St. Peter, who shows
us how life begins, again and again, in the company of the one who is life itself,
Jesus Christ.
Revd Gary.
Future housing for Syrian refugees This November the Syrian family that the South Cheltenham team are helping to house will need to move house. This is because the house they are currently living in is required by the diocese for a new minister. The Refugee Sponsorship Project Group have been working with the family and diocese to prepare for this and are in conversation with the local authority about finding suitable accommodation for the family as soon as possible. Normally the Council would not action anything until far closer to the date that the family would need to move. We are keen to encourage the Council to act now, bearing in mind the need to house a family of six and Cheltenham’s recent recognition as a ‘City of Sanctuary’ providing a warm welcome to refugees. To this end, we are inviting members of the congregations in South Cheltenham to write to their Councilors. Copies of a model letter, which you can personalise, and send or email to our Councilors can be found at the back of Church or by emailing St Peter’s church office: [email protected]. Will you add your voice to our continued support for the family?

St. Peter’s Churchyard
Can you help?
St. Peter’s has stood at the foot of Leckhampton Hill for over 850 years and has served the people of Leckhampton and the
surrounding area throughout that time. It is a beautiful, quiet and holy place to visit, to pray and to find some peace.
St. Peter’s is looking to bring together a new team of volunteers to
help keep the churchyard beautiful. This would require giving 2 hours on a rota every so often.
Those who have helped previously say it’s a great way to keep fit, make new friends and contribute to St. Peter’s and the community.
If interested please speak to either Brad Coates or Revd Gary or
email: [email protected]
Thank you.

ST. PETER’S WELCOMES YOUNG PEOPLE
The Tuesday Club is for babies and toddlers aged 0-4 years, with their parents or other carers. We meet every Tuesday during term time from 10 to 11.30am in the Glebe Cottages next to St Peter’s
Each session includes time for play, a Bible story, craft, drinks and songs.
The adults are a very friendly group and enjoy a good chat and a cup of tea or coffee, as well as joining in with the playing and craft activities. We use a lot of glue! For more information, contact Hermione Mason 01242 516346
Young children, with their parents, are always welcome at church, particularly for the Sunday 10am Family Communion service. On special festivals, we hold All-Age Worship; usually at 10am (see ‘Calendar’). St Peter’s has a spacious carpeted ‘children’s area’ near the front where parents and children can sit together, play with the toys, and take part in the worship. Just turn up!
For older children, Junior Church takes place in the Glebe Cottages during the 10am service. Children attend the start of the service but leave after the first hymn, returning to church at ‘The Peace’. The activities at Junior Church are based on the same Bible readings as the adults are learning about.

How Christians are making a difference in their communities
Sharon is the Director of the Ugly Duckling Company. The charity’s mission is to explore how you stimulate life-changing and spiritual conversations.
Sharon said, “People often find it hard to get beyond small talk in everyday conversation but I think there is a real human need to connect on a deeper level. When we become Christians, we are motivated to share our faith. Building on real relationships and listening to people lets us truly understand those around us. As we share life with someone, opportunities naturally arise to stimulate relevant conversations about the Good News. “I bring a group of women together in the local pub to play a game called Table Talk (a conversational game, devised by the UDC which gives people the space to explore and share their ideas). On the way home from the last Table Talk session, a woman said to me, “I love our Table Talk evenings. Even though our group appears to have nothing in common—different jobs, interests, never worked together or been to school together and don’t have children the same age… yet this is where I have the most deep and meaningful conversations. And it doesn’t matter what you believe—you can still say anything that’s on your mind.” I was grinning as I was driving home because that’s exactly why we created the game. Another woman said, “I’ve been desperate to talk about some of these things, but didn’t want to be the one to bring it up in conversation.” “When I was growing up, my dad always used to remind me that it doesn’t matter which job you are in or where you find yourself, we can all do our best and we all inspire other people in some way.” Find out more at www.theuglyducklingcompany.com Heading up Gloucestershire Credit Union We caught up with retired banker Geoff Shaw who is a lifelong Christian and Chairman of the Board at Gloucestershire Credit Union.
“I first got involved with Stroud Valleys Credit Union (SVCU) when my local MP put my name forward to help with internal audit.
- 20 -
“The big challenge came for me when I listened to Archbishop Justin railing against payday lenders, back in 2013. At that time, he charged credit unions to compete with the likes of Wonga. I wrote Bishop Michael, asking in what way Gloucester Diocese was willing to help. As it happened, Gloucestershire Credit Union (GCU), whilst having savers and borrowers, lacked board members and management. The Diocese responded with a six point plan for both credit unions, including a cash injection. The money allowed GCU to employ someone help it recover. Although still small, it has grown hugely over the last five years. We have just under 1,000 members, with total savings of £335,000 and loans totalling just short of £200,000.
“We are responsible lenders and help people from all walks of life, especially those who might otherwise be financially excluded – people like a single mum whose washing machine has broken down. We don’t lend into the debt spiral – only to people that we consider will both willing and able to repay. We are a non-profit co-operative, owned by the members, whose savings we lend out, much like a building society. The ethical element of credit unions is very important to me and to our members.
“Until recently we were struggling to handle the volume of applications but we have received a grant from the Diocesan Life Development Fund, enabling us to employ an Executive Director and a Loans Officer. Gloucestershire County Council has also commissioned us to help develop services for young people leaving care to help them set up home.
“My work with the credit unions and other things that I do are a way putting something back into society. Whilst my role is largely strategic, I would hope that we have made a difference in the lives of at least some local people with our work and will increasingly continue to do so.”
As well as his role with GCU, Geoff has been treasurer of his PCC for 20 years and still sits on the PCC. Find out more about becoming a CU member at www.gloscreditunion.org.uk
Wine and Welding
Our Senior Digital Comms Officer Sam Cavender runs a ‘wine and welding’ session in his Bristol home. At surface level, the group of guys that comes along are putting together weirdly tall bikes and testing them out. But the real point of what is going on is actually friendship. Younger men as a group often find it difficult to connect with other men, find it hard to share struggles that might be going on in their lives and as a group are at a higher risk
- 21 -
of suicide. Although the suicide rate for this group is coming down, over three quarters of all suicides still fall within this demographic. Sam’s Wine and Welding gives people a reason to connect, to laugh, and generally just take some time out from the pressures of adult life. Sam says, “It’s a tiny thing, but I think life is made out of these little connections. We don’t need an agenda in order to help set each other free.”
Scroll Free September This September we are getting behind the Royal Society for Public Health’s Scroll Free September campaign. It’s a chance to take a break from social media and find out what you could do with that extra time in your day. You could choose to delete all personal social media accounts from your phone for 30 days or if that seems too much, you could sign up to limit your use.
You can choose between five different programmes
Social butterfly—take a break from social media at social events Night owl—give up social media after 6pm Cold turkey—give up all personal accounts for 30 days Sleeping dog—give up social media in the bedroom Busy bee—take a break from personal accounts at school or work
It could be that social media is not a problem for you, but we all know someone who might find their life happier and more fulfilling with a little less scrolling. Find out more and sign up at www.rsph.org.uk/our-work/campaigns/scroll-free-september.html
