AUGUST 30, 2013
Weekly Newsletter of South Charlotte Middle School
EmPower You….. This is the theme for this year. At South Charlotte, we are excited to challenge everyone within
the walls of our school to feel empowered. The administration is supporting this in every way. From custodians
to teachers and students, we want everyone to feel a sense of empowerment. With empowerment comes great
responsibility, however. Students will find that they will be empowered to ask questions, use technology as a
learning tool and not have to put it away, participate in leadership opportunities and more. The teachers are
being challenged to ask the question, “what if….” Many times we, as educators, have great ideas, but we
immediately squash them ourselves because we feel there is not enough money, time or resources. I am
committed to asking the question for them. If it makes sense for kids, why not? We are also excited that we have
a theme directly related to technology. As we continue our BYOT program, they will definitely enjoy the benefits
that technology has to offer in order to get things done effectively. They will benefit from the literal Power and
also the power of knowledge.
I would like to thank all of you for your support this year. A special thank you to Mr. Hermes Goudes. He is in
charge of campus beautification and he and his team have done a fabulous job. Our school grounds look great,
thus our first impression is great. I would also like to thank the PTO for all the hard work regarding our mailing
and the assembly of the student packets. They also provided lunch for our staff on the first day, provided supplies
for teacher classrooms and so much more. Thank you again.
In the next few days, your child will receive a name tag (with picture) from us. This name tag will be worn at all
times (lanyards will be provided by CMS). Teachers and staff are having name tags made as well. The teacher
name tags will access the locked doors on campus. The goal is to have all doors locked at all times and the only
entry will be by those who have the name tag keys (teachers/staff). Soon, also the school will receive a system
that requires all visitors to identify themselves before entering the building. More information about this will be
forthcoming. I am excited about all the extra ways we are keeping our students and staff safe. I appreciate also
your support and patience as we implement and facilitate these new security features.
Career and Technical Education classes will be testing on September 3rd and 4th. This assessment will be given
again at the end of the semester. The initial test will be used as a baseline and of course the test at the end will
serve as a summative of all knowledge learned.
I hope that all of you have a great Labor Day Weekend. Please always reach out to us if you have questions or
concerns. We are here to serve your children. Thank you for allowing us to each day.
Regards,
Lisa Bailes, Principal
Many thanks to Connolly Orthodontics for
providing our students and staff with vinyl
backpacks. It also gave us the opportunity to
“go green” by saving envelopes for our
student 1st day packet. We are incredibly
grateful to have this partnership!
