#SHIFT . . .your way of thinking,

your way of understanding the worth and dignity of

each person.

#SHIFT A Week to Change the World. That was our theme for this past week and we did just that. Forty-Five teens from our two parishes participated in #Shift which was a week long work retreat based on the Corporal Works of Mercy. They gathered each morning at 7am for morning prayer, then went out to various worksites to make a difference in the world around them.

Our teens prepared meals at the soup kitchen, sorted clothes, packed backpacks for children in need, weeded the Urban Garden, delivered meals to the elderly and homebound, visited a nursing home with the Missionaries, ate lunch with guests of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and even made bread that was brought to Mid-City Nutrition to be included with a meal they prepared. We even had two groups of teens walk to fetch water from the Belle River, simulating what those in other countries must do to have access to water. That water was then used to make soap for hygiene kits for those in need AND to wash each others feet the way Jesus washed the feet of His disciples.

The best part? Nobody complained once. Each day the teens would return to the Life Center with stories of people they met or had lunch with that inspired them to want to continue in service to others.

On Friday night, a banquet awaited these teens and their families, a reminder of the heavenly banquet that awaits us after a life of following Jesus’ example. We enjoyed dinner together, then ended with a time of praise and worship to our Lord for the daily bread He provides and spent time in His presence during Adoration.

It was, without a doubt, a week that changed not only those we served, but all of us as well. Our hearts were opened to seeing others the way Jesus sees them - having true worth and dignity, no matter their life circumstances.

I’m in awe at the number of people that gave so generously of themselves to make this week a reality. Thank you does little to truly express my gratitude, but please accept these two small words as a heartfelt sentiment. No matter the role you played, your contribution made the week a success.

With sincere gratitude, Lisa Hunter, Youth Minister

HEART OF JESUS

In celebrating

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2015

See Flyer inside bulletin for more details

Our 4 week launch of Operation Olive Branch was a resounding success. We will begin this ministry in earnest Saturday, September 19th.

Alternating between St. Augustine and Holy Family, we will gather one Saturday each month to live out our calling as Christians to share the Good News

Below are a few of the comments from those who participated in our pilot program:

I started out a bit skeptical and nervous. I was amazed on how well we were received by the people we called.

I was a bit fearful at first, but after the third contact I didn’t want to stop. I wanted to call on more. We don’t know if we made any difference with the people we talked to, but it sure has made a difference in us. I don’t know whether I was planting seeds or watering them. I guess it is all in the hands of the Holy Spirit. I do know that it was a humbling, rewarding experience to giving my time and what little talent I have to God I felt like I was a family member talking to another family member. I was astounded by how many people were eager to offer their prayer intentions to bring back to the church. Please join us Saturday, September 19, 2015 at St. Augustine: Mass 8:00 AM (optional); Brief Training Session 9:00 AM (if you haven’t already done so); Calling on Parishioners 10:00 to 11:00 AM; Return to the Parish 11:00 AM.

Last weekend, our parish family was finally able to celebrate

with Sherri Moeller her formal reception into the Church.

Active in the parish for the past 3 years, Sherri was first

united with us by her Christian baptism, and then by her

deep desire. Her journey with the RCIA process had a few

hiccups, testing her patience and strengthening her focus.

Those at the 6pm mass were blessed to witness Sherri

making her Solemn Profession of Faith and then she and

her husband Dale pronounced vows and sacramentally

convalidated their marriage. At long last, Sherri took her

place at the Eucharistic table. She will be presented to the

bishop for Confirmation in November. Congratulations

Sherri and Dale. God bless you both!

squares?

You are needed!

Holy Family has had a Prayer Blanket Ministry for over 10 years. Their efforts have given many moments of comfort to those in need. We want to thank all of those who have helped over the years. Due to life circumstances, the number of members has declined and we are seeking some new members. The only level of skill is the desire to help others. We create prayer scrappy quilts, afghans, prayer shawls and slippers for those that are struggling with physical and emotional challenges. We will resume meeting in September, at Holy Family, on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. It is not mandatory to come each time we meet, however it offers a time for supplies to be picked up, to learn new techniques, and to meet the ladies that are also working on the prayer blanket ministry. If you are interested in joining or you have questions, please call Donna at 810-392-3106 or Catherine in Holy Family’s parish office at 810-392-2056.

The 8th annual dinner auction to benefit St. Augustine Catholic School will be held on Friday, October 16th with doors opening at 5:30 pm. We have made some changes to our theme and we are excited to be planning a night at “An Old Country Fair.” We will return for another fabulous year to Maniaci’s Banquet Center for a full sit down dinner, open bar, 50/50, wheel barrel of cheer, along with over 200 amazing auction items! We already have a package including a time share in Orlando and Disney World tickets to be used during spring break! Tickets remain at $35 each (purchased in the school office beginning September 8th), and you can once again choose your seat when you purchase your ticket. We have also COMPLETELY revamped the entire check-out process to ensure we can complete everyone’s payment within 30 minutes total. That’s right, 30 minutes! We are always striving for improvements and as always, we are looking for donations. We will accept any NEW items, services, or cash donations to allow us to purchase what we need to finish off baskets.
