“As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua today presents to the Israelites a stark choice. They can go their own way, serving the “gods” of the world, or they can commit themselves to the Lord, the one true God, who they had seen do great works to save them, but who also gave them the commandments to follow and who set them apart from the world to belong to Him. We see that the Israelites chose the Lord God, but we also know that they very often didn’t remain faithful to that commitment. In the Gospel today Jesus’s disciples must make the same choice. They have seen Jesus do great works, divine works, but they have also heard his new commandments, the new law he gave on the mountaintop. Most scandalously, they have heard Jesus talk at length about his coming sacrifice, and that those who would live with him and be saved must eat his flesh and drink his blood. Many of his disciples chose to leave him, to serve other “gods” who offered seemingly easier deals. But the Apostles, led by Peter, chose the Lord God, even though we know that they didn’t always remain faithful to that commitment. Today we ourselves face the same choice. We too have received the Lord’s salvation, His grace given to us in baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, and the other sacraments. We have heard God’s law in the commandments. We often experience the discomfort of being a people set apart from the world around us. The “gods” of the world around us offer comfort, affirmation, a certain kind of liberty, but ultimately we know these things are illusions. Can we say with the Apostles today, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Serving the Lord as an altar server One way in which we can serve the Lord is to literally serve at the altar of the Lord. If you have children who have received first communion, I encourage you to sign them up to be altar servers. In my own life being an altar server in elementary, middle, and high school helped me to learn to love the Mass. However we are called by God to serve Him, beginning to serve Him at Mass prepares us to say “yes” to Him.

Los “dioses” del mundo que nos rodea ofrecen consuelo, afirmación, cierto tipo de libertad, pero en última instancia sabemos que estas cosas son ilusiones. ¿Podemos decir con los apóstoles hoy, “Maestro, a quién acudimos? En mi propia vida, ser monaguillo en la escuela primaria, secundaria y preparatoria me ayudó a aprender a amar la Misa. Sin embargo, Dios nos llama a servirle, comenzar a servirle en la Misa nos prepara para decirle “sí”…

This Ascension Press DVD series begins Tuesday, September 14 in Cabrini Room in Parish Center at 6:30 p.m. Sessions will be held the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month.
