lsaiah 66:r8-zr / Hebrews !2:5-7, ::-:r3 I Luke r3:zz-3o

I pride myself on being prompt. lt's about being considerate of those

waiting for you. So my initial feelings toward the people in today's gospel-those who didn't get to the master's house before he locked the door-arenot particularly sympathetic. "should've checked your watchistoppeddawdling/planned ahead" is what cynically runs through my mind. But that'sexactly Jesus' point-once we're certain of our moral superiority and others'failures, we get in trouble.

Jesus' story reveals that people who assumed they'd be welcomed by themaster simply by association, heritage, or neighborhood are surprised to be

left outside even as outsiders from distant lands are welcomed. God doesn'tabide by our rules, divisions, and judgments.

ln fact, God delights in upending our ideas of who is right and who is wrong.Jesus states it clearly, "Some are last who will be first, and some are firstwho will be last." We hear it repeatedly-"Why do you notice the splinter inyour brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own

eye?" (Matthew 7:3)-yet we holler in political and religious arenas aboutwho will be saved, who's going to hell, and who God favors and despises.

Jesus is clear: Strive to enter through the narrow door. He says many willattempt to enter but won't be strong enough.

It's an interesting word choice-to fit through a narrow door, you need onlybe lean or thin, not necessarily strong. Perhaps he meant strong enough toresist condemning others, strong enough to focus on stripping ourselves ofsinful behaviors that keep us from intimacy with God.

FAITH FORMATION - \lVHAT's \A/HAT con"iinued

RCIA - (Rite of Christian lnitiation of Adults) - The RCIA stands for the Rite ofChristian lnitiation of Adults. RCIA in its purest form is for those adults who have not

yet been baptized-however in reality those that are converting from other Christian

religions often go through the RCIA as well as baptized Catholics who need tocomplete Sacraments of initiation. The RCIA is a process by which adults are

introduced to the life of the Catholic Church through catechesis and liturgy. When an

adult becomes Catholic they receive all 3 sacraments of initiation at the same time-Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. Debbie Fujiyama is our Coordinator. Lively

discussionsr prayer and true conversion through formation are a part of each RCIA

class.

de ar PAD Rf,

Last year Pope Benedict XVI named huo naa Doctnrs of the

Church. What does that title mean? Saint Hildegarde of Bingen

was said to be tlrcfourthfemale Doctor. WLn are the otlrcr three?

While all saints are exceptionally holy, popes bestow thehonorary title Doctor of the Church to saints ofexceptional wisdom and learning who have had a

monumental theological or doctrinal impact on theChurch.

Saints Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, and Gregory theGreat were the original four Doctors of the Church. SaintThomas Aquinas was accorded the distinctions Doctar

Angelicus aLnd Doctor Communis for his purity of life and forclallity of thought that seemingly stretched beyond theconfinesof the human intellect. Saint Alphonsus Liguoriwas named a Doctor most quickly-only eighty-fouryears after his death.

Last October, Pope Benedict named SaintJohn of Avilaand Saint Hildegard of Bingen as the thirry-fourth and

thirty-fifth Doctors. Hildegard joined Teresa ofAvila andCatherine of Siena (both named Doctors by Pope Paul VIin 7970) and Th6rdse of Lisieux (Pope John Paul II in1ee7).

It's worth mentioning that although Pope John Paul IIcanonized 480 people, he named only one Doctor:Th6rdse, who was canonized by Pope Pius K in1925.
