AUGUST 21, 2016 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reecting on God’s Word Trudy hung up the phone very slowly. “Well, Jim, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that your mom and dad are coming to Kate’s wedding after all. The bad news is that your brother is coming with them.” Jim’s brother was a missionary for a strict religious sect. When he had learned that Jim and Trudy were becoming Catho- lic he had erupted in condemnation. They had not spoken since then. Have you ever hoped someone would not come to an event you were hosting, or scheduled it when you knew the person wouldn’t be available? Are there people whose presence in the seat next to you at Sunday Mass would make you uncomfortable? Today’s scriptures pro- claim that those people have as much right to “recline at table in the kingdom of God” as we do—or more. Reflecting on God’s Word Trudy hung up the phone very slowly. “Well, Jim, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that your mom and dad are coming to Kate’s wedding after all. The bad news is that your brother is coming with them.” Jim’s brother was a missionary for a strict religious sect. When he had learned that Jim and Trudy were becoming Catho-lic he had erupted in condemnation. They had not spoken since then. Are there people whose presence in the seat next to you at Sunday Mass would make you uncomfortable? Today’s scriptures pro-claim that those people have as much right to “recline at table in the kingdom of God” as we do—or more. Living God’s Word Many of us wish that certain people were outside the reach of God’s love. Surrendering that illusion can be “a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteous-ness” (Hebrews 12:11). Dear Parishioners, The beginning of a new school year is like a re-birth in the cycle of parish life. I

sense a new spirit and energy as the Catholic Con-sortium, our Religious Education Program, and nu-merous activities begin a new season. As I begin my third year as your pastor, I am grateful for the great progress we have achieved in a short time. Soon after my arrival, more than 45 parishioners participated in the Parish Transfor-mation Initiative which generated a number of ideas and helped us to identify a number of priorities and opportunities for development. In order to be faith-ful to the work that had been done it became evi-dent that the renewal of the Pastoral Council and creation of a Ministry Commission system was our number one priority. Over the following months a new council was formed and all of the parish minis-tries were organized into a new commission struc-ture. I am happy to report that our Pastoral Council and Commissions are now beginning their second year and that they are bearing great fruit. Congratulations to the Human Concerns Commis-sion and to all the ministries that this commission supports. I was inspired by the efforts and creativity that went into their ministry fair last weekend. The mission of the Human Concerns Commission is: “to promote the Word and manifest the love of Jesus Christ by helping those who are in need, following the principle that “whatever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me.” Thank you to all who took the time to visit the various ministry tables and for those who expressed the desire to serve and sup-port the many ministries. The three remaining com-missions: Worship, Parish Life and Faith Formation will offer similar opportunities during hospitality in the coming months. The essential function of our leadership structure is to promote healthy communi-cation, to support for every ministry, and to provide direction so that all of us can work together for the

building up of the community of Saint Mary. I re-main grateful for the dedication and generosity of those who steward their gifts here at Saint Mary. A note of thanks to our maintenance team for all the work this summer to prepare our school. It really looks great. Thanks also to Richard Peter-son and the Gardening Ministry. Our campus is looking beautiful. Blessings for all students at the beginning of a new school year! Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry

A Prayer for Students

Good and Gracious God, We prayerfully seek your blessing upon our children and teenagers as they begin a new school year. Bless them with your love and goodness that they may continue to grow in faith, wisdom and strength. Protect them day and night, at home, in school, and at play. Inspire them to do their best. Strengthen them during times of discouragement and disappointment. Make them ever mindful of the needs of others, kind and caring to those who are less fortunate and those with disabilities. Send your Spirit to inspire them with a thirst for knowledge of themselves and of the world; and may their learning lead them to the source of all goodness and truth, which is you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN

Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak

“Are You a Follower of Jesus?”

A few weeks ago I was out trimming bushes in the front of my house when out of nowhere appeared a neatly dressed woman, probably in her mid-fifties, who’s first words out of her mouth were “Sir, are you a follower of Jesus?” Before I could answer, she was handing me a pamphlet emblazoned with a “Jehovah Witness” banner. I told her that I was in fact a follower of Jesus, but before she got going with her “witnessing,” I cut her off at the pass with identifying myself as a mem-ber of the clergy in the Catholic faith. And since I really needed a break from “bushwhacking,” I was o.k. when she just kept on going about how being a Jehovah’s Witness was being in a better place than it was to be Catholic. Although we both agreed that organized religions are under attack and that more and more people are decry-ing the evils of religion, religious thought or faith in general, my ecu-menical spirit ended when this nice lady proudly suggested that Je-sus, the Son of God, was really Michael the Archangel.” I did give her back her pamphlet, telling it probably would be of more benefit to someone else. Later in the morning, as I was reflecting over a very cold glass of iced tea, I got to thinking about how we could tell if someone is a fol-lower of Jesus without having to ask them. These are the “signs” I came up with:

A follower of Jesus looks forward to complete bliss and satisfac-tion in heaven. Which I believe means that if we mourn, hunger and thirst, if we resist conflict, if we endure persecution in this life, we have and are willing to proclaim that our hope is in something that has yet to come. Heaven.

A follower of Christ influences the world around them. Jesus told us to be salt (a preservative) and light (guidance). We must not bury our Christian heads in the sand and must stand up and be willing to call for justice no matter how unpopular that might be.

A follower of Jesus doesn’t indulge in anger, lying or retaliation. Jesus specifically tells us that we are to love those who do wrong to us. A follower can easily turn his/her cheek 7 X 70 times.

A follower of Christ does not serve money. Whatever hold value for us holds our hearts. If that value is in our bank account, our hope is placed in an earthly institution. Anyone who values money more than people is not a follower of Jesus.

A follower of Jesus treats people the way he would want to be treated. Some have called this the “Golden Rule.” We’ve been told in the Gospel of Matthew that this simple rule encapsulates all of the Law and the Prophets.

A follower of Christ is genuine and discerning. Jesus warned about people who would claim to represent him but did not actually live as a follower. He called them wolves in sheep’s clothing. Jesus just hates hypocrisy.

As you have probably already recognized, these signs of “Follower” are all gleaned from Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). Are these some of the signs of our faith that we are proud of, can those around us see these signs manifested in our daily lives, can people, without asking, recognize that we are followers of Jesus. I pray the answer is YES.

Worship Commission Ministry Fair September 17 & 18

How will you share your gift with the parish?

Altar Servers Open to young parishioners in 4th through 12th grades. These young people develop initiative and forethought by assisting the priest and deacon at Mass. Children’s Liturgy of the Word Younger children are sent to hear the readings of the day and a mes-sage appropriate to their age. Adult leaders are sought. Greeters and Ushers A personal welcome helps engage a worshiper. Ushers and Greeters assist where needed, from helping to find seats, taking up the offertory collection, to giving emergency assistance. Eucharistic Ministers Teens and adults are trained and mandated by the Archdiocese to act as extraordinary ministers of Communion. Lectors Teens and adults are trained for the proclamation of the Word. Sacristans The many articles required for the celebration of the sacraments are the area of sacristans, from candles and cups to vesture and linens. Music Ministry Helping the assembly sing God’s praises, as well as exercising their own particular role in the sacred liturgy is the goal of music ministers. Along with the Contemporary Choir and the Parish Choir, we would like to organize a funeral choir and a children’s choir. Eucharistic Adoration The Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration one day each month. Adorers as well as additional coordinators are sought. Rosary and Divine Mercy Ministry These dedicated persons recite the Rosary after daily Mass Monday through Thursday, and the Divine Mercy Novena & Chaplet on Fridays immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass. The Family Rosary is recited every first Saturday of the month at 4:30 PM. Simbang Gabi St. Mary’s is the site of one of the nine Lake County area novena Masses in preparation for Christmas. Along with a festive celebration of the Eucharist, a reception with food and fellowship is offered. Call-Me Ministry Even though you may have the desire, you may not have the ability to regularly commit to a ministry. Call-Me ministers share their contact information with ministries in which they have an interest. When extra help is needed, ministry coordinators give these ministers a call.

St. Mary of the Annunciation Bereavement Ministry

10 Week Grief Support Group:

“FINDING HOPE/HEALING HEARTS” One of North America's leading grief educators, Dr. Alan Wolfelt has written many books about healing in grief. In compassionate, down-to-earth language, Understanding Your Grief describes ten touch-stones—or trail markers—that are essential physical, emotional, cogni-tive, social, and spiritual signs for mourners to look for on their journey through grief. This book is his most comprehensive, covering the es-sential lessons that mourners have taught him in his three decades of working with the bereaved. Think of your grief as a wilder-ness—a vast, inhospitable for-est. You must journey through this wilderness. To find your way out, you must become acquainted with its terrain and learn to follow the sometimes hard-to-find trail that leads to healing. In the wilderness of your grief, the touchstones are your trail markers. They are the signs that let you know you are on the right path. When you learn to identify and rely on the touchstones, you will find your way to hope and healing. This weekly group will meet at St. Mary of the Annunciation for 10 consecutive Thursdays, September 15–November 17, 2016, 6:30–8:00pm. The group size is limited so register now! The $30.00 registration fee covers the cost of the two books. To register, contact Diane Mulroe at the St. Mary parish office. [email protected] or call 847-223-0010 Here is what has been said about the experience of the Finding Hope/Healing Hearts group: “[The group] normalized feelings and situations; felt comfort with new friends; hope was built”

“That I’m not the only one going through this; that slowly it will get better; there will be ups and downs”

“Commonality and continuity; facilitators compassionate and real in their approach; each person has added to the group”

“Enjoyed sharing experiences with others in the group; realizing I’m not crazy after all.”

Ministry of Care…What Is It? Visits to Homes: Do you know a friend, neighbor or relative who is no longer able to attend Mass? Many homebound persons participate in the Mass by watching the Mass on TV. But they are missing a key element by not being able

to receive the Eucharist. We have a ministry which brings prayers and Communion to the homebound called “Ministry of Care” or MOC. Min-isters of Care typically visit on a weekly basis and thereby bring the love and support of the community of St. Mary’s Church to them. All Ministers of Care have received archdiocesan training and participate in ongoing faith formation opportunities. If you or someone you know is interested in having a Minister of Care come and visit, please contact Diane Mulroe in the parish office. [email protected]

St. Mary Prayer Angels As members of St. Mary's parish faith community, it is our responsibility to re-member in spiritual ways those among us who are ill in mind, body, or spirit. We

have a ministry under Human Concerns called “St. Mary’s Prayer An-gels” ministry. This ministry is for anyone who has regular access to their email and agrees to pray for the intentions and needs of our par-ish community as they arise. How it works: If you are in need of urgent prayers for yourself or a family member,

you simply email your request to Diane Mulroe [email protected] and then your request will be added to the next outgoing Prayer Angels email.

If you would like to be a praying member of the Prayer Angels Minis-try, you subscribe to receive emails. Once you are subscribed, you will periodically receive an email with the names of those who are in need of urgent prayers as well as the names of our beloved deceased. As a member of the ministry, you agree to pray for those in need of our love and support.

Permission must be given by either the individual or a family member to add the prayer request to the Prayer Angels email. All prayers that parishioners entrust to us are confidential to the St. Mary Prayer An-gels only and are not to be forwarded or posted on any form of social network. If you would like to join this ministry, please visit the welcome page on the St. Mary of the Annunciation website http://www.stmaryfc.org/#/welcome and click on the graphic “Click here to join the parish email lists” or email Diane Mulroe and you will be added to the subscription and email distribution for St. Mary Prayer Angels.

St. Frances De Sales a Year of Mercy Site St. Francis de Sales Parish is one of 31 parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago that has been designated as a pilgrimage site throughout the Year of Mercy. Our Holy Door at the Church reflects the opening of our hearts, the opening of our souls, and the opening of our minds to the Lord's mercy and the Gospel of Mercy. Because we are a pilgrim-age site, the faithful can receive a Plenary Indulgence by walking through the Holy Door if certain requirements are met. For more infor-mation about upcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy events at St. Francis de Sales, please visit www.stfrancislz.org.

SPEAKER SERIES Please join us each month during the Year of Mercy for our Speaker Series, gathering in the Ministry Center (135 S. Buesching Rd., Lake Zurich) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to hear a presentation on a different aspect of Mercy by a Catholic guest speaker.

Tuesday, August 23 – Fr. Burke Masters, Vocation Director for the Diocese of Joliet: Born in 1966, the youngest of 3 sons, Fr. Burke was not raised Catholic but attended Providence Catholic High School in order to move closer to his dream of becoming a Major League baseball player. It was at Providence that Fr. Burke fell in love with the Eucharist and the Catholic Church. He became Catholic his senior year. He went on to play college baseball at Mississippi State University. His major league dream did not materialize, so after work-ing as an actuary, and then ticket manager for the Kane County Cou-gars, Fr. Burke felt the call to become a priest. He attended Mundelein Seminary from 1997-2002 and was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Joliet in 2002. He now travels around the diocese to en-courage young men and women to lay down their lives for the sake of Jesus Christ. Fr. Burke also maintains a blog, which can be found at https://frburke23.wordpress.com.
