FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Congratulations to Mr. Patrick Cody, chairperson of our Parish Pastoral Council, who has been appointed to head the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council. The Archdiocesan Pastoral Council en-gages the diverse faithful of the Arch-

diocese, with the Archbishop in consultative dialogue. The council addresses significant pastoral needs and concerns through investigation, reflection and feed-back. Congratulations to the new officers of our School Parent Guild who were recently inducted during the last Parent Guild meeting, held at the Flanagan Center. Congratulations also to the outgoing officers who were instrumental to the great success of the Silent and Live Auction. But the greatest story of the day, as I am writing this, is the chicken eggs hatched by our First Grade students. They were able to view the baby chick coming out from its shell. They put chicken eggs into the incubator on March 23. The first egg hatched on April 13th. As expected the eggs took 21 days to hatch. As I stared at the amazing sight, I immediately thought of Easter. Mrs. Provence, the First Grade teacher, was wise to use this experiment at this time of the year to tie in with Easter. This is a very nice way of using science to teach our faith and our religion. The cracking of the egg represents the breaking open of the grave of Christ. The egg shows new life. Inside the egg is the material which will make a tiny, new chicken. That new life comes forth when the chick breaks out of the egg. Christ’s coming forth from the grave is some-thing like that. Christ was really dead before He came to life again. The egg seems dead before it brings forth life. The egg reminds us of the tomb in which Jesus was buried. The chick breaking forth from the egg reminds us of Jesus breaking forth from the tomb. It was a great joy for so many who were amazed at the hatching of the baby chicks. We are filled with joy for “Christ is Risen Today!” He has come out of the grave. Our happiness will even be greater if we realize that we can rise with Christ and we can come out from our own tombs. As there are many kinds of tombs in our life, there are also many kinds of resurrections. We can rise to a better and higher life. Join our kids in their Easter Egg hunting or simply learn from your “Eggsperience!” Sorry, I don’t have any egg jokes to tell. If I did, I’m afraid they would crack you up.

LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS! Preparation for the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition by Jerry Back

Last month we studied the Confiteor prayer--the most commonly used form of the Act of Penance. There is a second form that can be used in the Penitential Rite and it will also be changed in the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition (beginning 11/27/2011).

Question: What is the second form of the Act of Peni-tence? Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: "Lord, we have sinned against you…" The text for the second form of the Act of Penitence is unfamiliar to many of us because it is rarely used. One can make an educated guess as to why this dialogue never caught on in the Church in the United States, but it would not be due to any weakness in the texts, for they are taken almost ver-batim from Sacred Scripture. The 1973 English translation of this dialogue is undergoing a significant revision in the revised transla-tion to come. The current translation is:

Priest: Lord, we have sinned against you. Lord have mercy. People: Lord, have mercy. Priest: Lord, show us your mercy and love. People: And grant us your salvation. We might feel uncomfortable focusing on the various texts of the Act of Penitence because we don’t like to dwell upon our sinfulness. Exactly. While this and other texts prompt us to candidly admit that we have sinned, they also turn us in confident faith and hope toward God, who is infinitely merciful.

The following revised translation echoes the verses from Baruch and Psalm 85 more closely. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------SECOND FORM OF THE PENITENTIAL RITE ROMAN MISSAL, 3RD EDITION—NOT FOR USE UNTIL 11/27/11.

Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord. People: For we have sinned against you. Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy. People: And grant us your salvation. Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------So, I'm excited to learn that even prayers we may not of-ten use in the Mass are still rich with meaning and con-tain the spiritual gifts of grace. This second form of the Penitential Rite is one more profound opportunity to lift up our hearts!

The Philippine Madrigal Singers during their performance in The MADZ The Philippine Madrigal Singers first earned critical acclaim during their performance in the First Choruses of the World Festival at the Lincoln Center in New York in 1969. This concert welcomed them to the international choral community, eventually paving the way to join-ing the most distinguished international choral competitions - Spittal, Austria; Arezzo and Gorizia, Italy; Neuchatel, Switzerland; Debrecen, Hungary; Varna, Bulgaria; Tolosa, Spain; and Marktoberdorf in Ger-many, and winning all the top prizes. In June 1997, the Philippine Madrigal Singers came home from their ninth world concert tour, winning the grand prize in the European Choral Grand Prix in Choral Singing in Tours, France, besting the five other grand prize winners of the most prestigious choral competition in Europe: Guido D'Arezzo, Italy; Debrecen, Hungary; Varna, Bulgaria; Gorizia, Italy; and Tolosa, Spain. The Madz displayed a virtuoso perfor-mance so moving one juror had to describe the group's music as the "most beautiful sound on earth". In July 2006, the Madz won the grand prize (Grand Prix de la Ville de Tours) at the Florilege de Tours choral competition in France, mak-ing them eligible for the 2007 European Grand Prix for Choral Singing (to be held in Arezzo, Italy). In the same competition, the Madz were also awarded the first prize for Category III (mixed vocal ensemble), first prize for Category IV (free program) and the Prix University François Rabelais for best interpretation of a Renaissance program. On August 26, 2007, the Philippine Madrigal Singers won the Grand Prize in the European Grand Prix in Choral Singing in Arezzo, Italy, making them the first choir in the competition's history to win it twice and the only Asian choir to do so. On 27 July 2009, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, designated the Philippine Madrigal Singers as UNESCO Artists for Peace at a ceremony which took place just before the group’s concert at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The group performs a variety of styles and forms but it specializes in the Madrigal, a polyphonic and challenging musical style popular dur-ing the Renaissance period where singers and guests would gather around the table during a banquet to sight-sing and make music togeth-er. This served as the inspiration for their unique style of singing - sing-ing seated in a semi-circle without a conductor. As Philippine ambas-sador of culture and goodwill, the Madz has had the pleasure and privi-lege of giving command performances for royalty and heads of state. These include Pope Paul 6th, Pope John Paul II, Presidents Ger-ald Ford and Richard Nixon, Queen Sofia of Spain, King Juan Carlos de Bourbon and Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The influence of the Madz on the Philippine and Asian choral scene has been far-reaching. It has graduated more than 200 choral and vocal pedagogues from its ranks, actively involved in organizing and conduct-ing choirs. Its corps of members, alumni composers and choral arrang-ers (Emmanuel Laureola, Fabian Obispo, Ruben Federizon, Ed and Annie Nepomuceno, Robert Delgado, Fr. Arnold Zamora, Christopher Borela, Anna Abeleda-Piquro, Nilo Alcala, etc.) continue to produce new compositions and choral settings of Philippine and Asian songs, thus contributing to the growth of choral literature in Asia. The Madz also maintains an active concert tour schedule, averaging two concert tours per year. Furthermore, their outreach concert tours take them to far-flung areas of the Philippines, seldom reached by other artists.

Holy Name of Jesus’ TREE OF LIFE Project

To mark Holy Name of Jesus Church’s 85th Anniversary, a “Tree of Life”, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves was installed at the back of the Church. Donors will have their

names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the “Tree of Life” will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. Inscribing a leaf is a beautiful way to: Cele-brate a life, or commemorate an important event in your life. A leaf is a lasting record and a testimony of our faith and love and being in “One Body” with our faith community. Thank you for sharing your celebrations of faith with our Holy Name community. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - YES, I would like to donate to the Holy Name Tree of Life Project for Capital Improvement. EASTER SUNDAY Alleluia! Alleluia! is back. We can sing it every Sunday until the earth journeys around the sun again. We are focused today on a new kind of light, the light of Christ, the Morning Star that will not ever set. Though our earth spins like a top through twenty-four-hour

cycles of day and night, the Church insists that this day that the Lord has made will not end.

Comment The great step from chaos to creation opens the book of Genesis and the Hebrew Testament: “In the be-ginning, when God created the heavens and the earth …” On this Easter day, we hear of a new beginning on earth when we learn that Mary Magdalene arrived at the tomb in the darkness of a new “first day,” the day of the Resurrection. Out of the terrible darkness comes a new day on the face of the earth. Mary discovers the open tomb and reports this amazing fact to Peter and John. Her message discloses alarming news, but not good news, at least not yet. So, alarmed and confused, Peter and John run to the place of burial to see for themselves. John arrives at the tomb first, then waits for Peter. After Peter enters, John too enters into the empty tomb. Nothing is ominous about the details he records, but plenty is mysterious.

Reflection We have a new day, a new life, a new bread. We can name those few privileged days that are truly new beginnings. We can remember how deeply moved we were or how high we were, depending on how we are affected by unmistakable joy. Easter is the first day of the rest of the life of the Church. It is a day for high celebration and quiet medita-tion. The repeated refrain of the responsorial psalm can be our refrain too: “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad.” The first day of the new creation began when Christ, the Morning Star who knows no set-ting, rose from the dead and shed peaceful light on all humankind. There is no end to this first day of the rest of our lives. The rest of our lives must bear witness to this.
