SOUP AND PUD LUNCHES

Same time, same place, same cost on Saturday 31st

August. Never been before? Forgotten the details?

Oh well let me remind you. It all happens in Swin-

ford Village Hall from noon until 2pm and costs £6

per lunch. It will be lovely to see you.

AUCTION OF PROMISES

All Saints' Church, Swinford will be the venue for

another Auction of Promises on Saturday 21st Sep-

tember. If you can donate a ‘Promise’ please contact

Mary (01788 860411) or Carole (01788 860308).

Some ideas - you could promise to do some ironing,

gardening, cook a meal, car washing/valeting, make

a cake, babysitting, dog sitting, painting, a lift to

and from an airport/station ….. the list is endless.

How long you promise is is also important, eg gar-

dening for two hours! Do you work somewhere that

could offer a service? - eg a boiler service or flow-

ers for a special occasion. You can even put a re-

serve price on your promise which will help our

auctioneer to know how much you feel your service

is worth!

Promises are needed by mid September so that en-

tries can be made in the catalogue. For further de-

tails contact Mary/Carole. Thank you.

SWINFORD PANTO 2019

It is not too late to get involved in this year's panto,

Mother Goose. If you wish to be considered for a

part on stage email your details to

[email protected]. Plus, if you can volun-

teer to help with scenery painting, prop making,

make up applying, ticket selling and any other

backstage/front of house duties we would love to

hear from you too.

HOW DO YOU SEE IT??

It might seem to you as though the best of the year

has already gone – the longest day, the hottest

weather, the best barbecues…. I’m sure you know

people who are already saying things like ‘the days

will get shorter now’ and ‘the kids will be back to

school soon’….. Maybe your holiday already

seems like a distant memory! Yet as I sit in the gar-

den today, the sun is shining through the leaves still

on the trees, still green, still beautiful, and I am re-

minded of the words of CS Lewis, engraved on his

memorial tombstone: ‘I believe in Christianity as I

believe that the sun has risen. Not only because I

see it, but because by it I see everything else.’

The way we look at the world is through the lenses

that are part of us – our culture, upbringing, educa-

tion… all have a part to play. For me, the most im-

portant lens I use is my faith in Jesus Christ. It isn’t

brought out on Sundays only. It is part of me; it im-

pacts the choices I make and how I live my life day

to day. It helps me decide what is really important,

what truly matters. The way my faith is expressed

has varied a lot over the years, and is about to

change again!

You will all know that Rev Emma has moved to the

cathedral for a year and also that Rev Dave is mov-

ing on after the summer. Archdeacon Claire Wood

has been helping us find out how we can rise to the

challenge of being 21st century church and under-

stand what God wants us to be involved in for this

time. So what it looks like is this: -

There will always be a clergy person available who

can manage our provision for important life events

like weddings. They will be available some of the

time for Sunday services too, but we will be look-

ing at how we can help more local lay people be

involved in worship for themselves and others. For

example, world-wide in the Church of England,

some 50,000 people now worship on other days

and at different times in what are known as ‘Fresh

Expressions of Church’. And in our own Diocese of

Leicester, these are the words from Bishop Martyn

‘Fresh expressions of church offer us a living

model of what can happen when God’s people are

set free to be leaders in mission, when clergy and

lay work in partnership, with a genuine sharing of

gifts and true mutuality.’

This idea of shared responsibility is being put into

practice here in our area. Leadership provision

around Mission, Vision, Clusters and PCCs will be

led by a new appointment - Stephen March will be

joining us for 3 days a week from September. He

has extensive church leadership experience in rural

areas, and as part of his current role within the Mis-

sion & Ministry department of the diocese, he has

encouraged and supported churches as they rethink

how they work with all those around to see com-

munity grow and flourish where they live.

So, all change!! How do you see it? Is your ‘lens’

making you wish for the past, angry with the pre-

sent, or fearful for the future? Or are you, like me,

excited about the possibilities and the potential for

growth?

SWINFORD VILLAGE HALL

The evening of Thursday July 4th was a date of

note. No, not just America’s Independence Day, but

the day when the Whist Drive returned to Swinford

after a gap of well over 30 years.

The Village Hall provided ample decks of cards –

all brand new, unused – together with score cards

for players to record their achievements. These also

helped unfamiliar players with the sequence of

trumps.

This event was thoroughly enjoyed by all who par-

ticipated, and covered all age groups, from geriat-

rics like me to youngsters still at school. It also

covered a wide range of abilities – but this was not

Page 10: August 2019 The Five Parishes News - Avon-Swiftavonswift.org.uk/BackIssues/2019/Aug.pdf · 2019-07-24 · August 2019 1 The Five Parishes News Serving the villages of Catthorpe, Misterton/Walcote,

a hindrance, very largely thanks to the efforts and

guidance from Simon Deacon.

Simon acted as a ringmaster (or should that be

‘table master’?) with a demonstration hand before

the event got under way. This was in the form of

the game being played with all cards openly dis-

played, and what card to play – and why - were ex-

plained simply. The ‘scoring’ of that hand helped us

all settle into the game. The four tables of this inau-

gural event then to play for real – and also for fun

as it turned out.

At the end of the first hand, Simon guided all the

participants on how the rules stated who should

move where for the next hand. This made sure that

the players enjoyed the social effect of playing with

different partners against changing opponents. Four

hands meant that all tables had changed players

completely, so refreshments were served at that

point.

During the refreshment break, other villagers ar-

rived, but seeing we were halfway through they

registered their disappointment at being too late to

Page 11: August 2019 The Five Parishes News - Avon-Swiftavonswift.org.uk/BackIssues/2019/Aug.pdf · 2019-07-24 · August 2019 1 The Five Parishes News Serving the villages of Catthorpe, Misterton/Walcote,

join in and determined to arrive in ample time for

the next event. All the comments and conversation

were lively and positive, so Simon’s call back to

the tables was followed eagerly.

The second half of the event progressed very well,

with everybody feeling more confident and relaxed.

The eventual winner? Sharon Laverick carried all

before her, amassing 60 tricks in her eight hands at

the tables. Well done Sharon.

All participants deemed the event a success, and

hope it becomes a regular fixture in the calendar of

the Village Hall. Everybody was certainly looking

forward to the next one.

Why not come and join us at 7:45 for 8:00 pm on

Thursday 1st August.

of tables etc) please contact:

SWINFORD WI

The Swinford WI Meeting on the 11th July was our

Annual Garden Party. Jackie Clapham kindly

hosted the meeting at her home. Everyone arrived

laden with delicious savoury and sweet delights

which were placed on the large table. After choos-

ing a glass of wine or a soft drink, we drifted into

the garden and chatted as we perused the plants and

floral displays. With everyone seated at the tables,

Hazel Gardner opened the meeting and welcomed

all present.

The WI business was then presented and various

dates for our diaries were announced:

Gold Work Techniques at WI House on 12th Octo-

ber.

Grow It, Cook It, Eat It with a two course lunch on

19th October in Leicester.

Christmas Lights at Kew Gardens, London on 4th

December. Travel is by coach.

We then enjoyed the food and refilled our glasses

whilst we chatted. Hazel entertained us with some

funny jokes whilst we enjoyed a coffee.

A very lovely evening was enjoyed by everyone

and the weather was kind to us.

Jackie was thanked for hosting the party.

There is no meeting in August, but our 12th Sep-

tember meeting is at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall

and will be ‘Made in Leicester.’ The speaker is

Brian Johnson. Please do come along and join us as

you will be most welcome.
