This month I had one of the most rewarding experiences. The SSL received an inquiry a few weeks back from The Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing Home. They wondered if we might be able to come and give a talk on Scotland as part of their monthly entertainment themed activities entitled “Tastes and Travels,” in which they take the residents to different parts of the world. Having been to Scotland in 2015 and subsequently put together a travelogue of our trip, I thought let’s do this. Janice Beatty volunteered to bring the Scottish mannequin fully dressed and Melissa Ingram volunteered to create some Scottish shortbreads. We brought some Highland Pipe music on a CD along with our map of Scotland not to mention a few tartan flags. Their auditorium sure looked and sounded the part and we had probably 15 to 20 residents attend the presentation. We took them via PowerPoint to Inveraray, Glencoe, Loch Ness, Skye, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St. Andrews and of course the Forbes Castle. We visited other castles, battle grounds, museums, gardens and a golf course and I must say we received a wonderful response from all who attended. I got a special call from Sister Marie Catherine McAuley (see picture below), one of the sisters at Little Sisters of the Poor N. H. who is from Scotland, to tell us how much they appreciated the presentation. As an aside, Sister Marie Catherine took me on a tour of the facility at which time I met an individual who was a 96 year old Navy veteran of WW II who served

on a destroyer that was sunk by a Kamikaze. It was an honor to meet him and an honor for all of us to provide many of the residents, who are in their later years, a virtual trip to Scotland. Anyone who thinks the SSL newsletter is just another newsletter needed to be at our last membership meeting. John Moffett showed how to access all the past issues by building a URL that can be turned into an icon right on the opening page of your PC/iPhone. Further, he spends a great deal of time connecting the newsletter to places and activities in Scotland that are of interest. Simply by keying on a highlighted text/nomenclature within an article you can instantly be transported to anywhere in Scotland and partake in a celebration or historical recreation of an event. Technology is amazing and John is taking advantage of it big time. I don’t know what other societies are doing in this regard, but I would put ours up against any!! Thank you John for a great newsletter and for showing

us how to get the most out of it!!!! A big welcome goes out to our newest member Scott Robinson. Glad you are with us. Get your taste buds ready as John’s better half Carol Moffett is going to show us how to make some savory Scottish dishes at our next meeting. Don’t forget a lot of things are coming up in September such as the Columbus Games, World Fest, SSL Picnic at Okolona Presbyterian Church, Ren Fair at Eminence…just to name a few. See you there!

Respectfully submitted, George E. (Jeff) Forbes

Many thanks to John Moffett for his informative and entertaining presentation on features in our Newsletter! Through John’s experiences and hobby of searching the Internet for video footage about Scotland, we watched drone coverage of most of Scotland’s beautiful topography! John also guided us on how to more effectively use links to Newsletters on our website. His presentation was thoroughly enjoyed!

There being no further business, the July 2018 Membership Meeting adjourned at: 9:00pm.

We want to thank the Scottish Rite of Louisville and the Knights of St. Andrew for inviting us to their Remem-brance of the Battle of Bannockburn. The ceremony was held on June 28 at the Scottish Rite Temple in Downtown Louisville. The building is beautiful. It was the first time I had been inside. The Scottish Society was welcomed with open arms and spoiled the whole evening long. We began by being the honored guests at a very delicious picnic style meal served in the activities hall down-stairs. We enjoyed meeting new people and talking to

our old friends. Then the ceremony began upstairs with the Louisville Pipe Band piping in the color guard and next the Society. We were treated to a rich history of the Scottish Rite and a knighting ceremony of two new members. During the program we viewed a movie that recounted what may have happened at the Battle of Bannockburn through a young man’s eyes who was there. It was a very interesting piece of historical fiction, and well thought out. One we may want to procure for the SSL. All in all a lovely evening.

demonstration of what “real” touring is like. We went to a farm house photo on the front page of the newsletter where John’s family stayed in 2010 near Moffat, Scotland (in the Borders Region). The photo and links were featured in the April 2017 Volume XX, Issue 4). We clicked on the hyperlink and whisked-off to highway A-708 about (15 miles East of Moffat), but on the road looking at the same farm house (Chapel Hope Farm). This feature in Google Maps is provides a “street-view” and is an interactive site. We were shown that we could travel up and down the road, having the ability of seeing 360 degrees in any direction. We traveled down the road and to Grey Mare Waterfall. Then we took the path up the mountain beside the water fall all the way to Loch Skeen the head waters of the Falls. We stopped frequently as we traveled up to Loch Skeen to see the majestic views. Again, we weren’t out of breath even though we traveled a couple of miles uphill. In the last segment we were shown how we can create a “short cut” on the desktop of your computer to quickly get to SSL webpage and to the list of Newsletters going back to 1999. First you should go to the SSL webpage. Go to google and type in www.scotsoflou.com, then click on Scottish Society of Louisville. Go to top right under Quick Links and click on Newsletter. Once there, highlight and copy the URL address at the very top: it should say, https://scotsoflou.com/newsletter/. Don’t type it just copy. Next right-click on your desktop, select “New” and then select ‘shortcut”. A new window pops up “Create Shortcut”. Then paste-in the URL location you just copied, then click “Next”. A new window pops up and asks for you to name the shortcut. Type in “SSL Newsletters”, then click Finish. A new icon named “SSL Newsletters” containing our logo should now appear on your Desktop. By clicking on this new short cut, it will take you to the list of Newsletters on our SSL Webpage.

By John Moffett, Editor

The presentation started with an explanation of how the Digital Form of the Newsletter adds much more than a printed copy because of Hyperlinks. It allows the reader to have a living document. A HYPERLINK is a word, phrase, or image that you can click on to jump to a new document or a new section within the current document or to a webpage or video. Hyperlinks are found in nearly all Webpages, allowing users to click their way from page to page. Text hyperlinks are often blue and underlined (like the word, hyperlink above in Blue and Underline), but don't have to be. [If you click on the above Hyperlink it will give you this definition.] When you move the cursor over a hyperlink, whether it is text or an image, the arrow (cursor) should change to a small hand pointing at the link. When you click it, a new page or place in the current page will open. First, we took a tour of the Isle of Skye, Cuillin Mountains and Loch Scavaig, Scotland. It is a mountain bike tour of the “Ridge” by Danny MacAskill. It was breath taking. Danny’s fearless ride up and down the mountain showed tremendous skill and confidence. The background scenery we spectacular. This video was presented in the February 2017 Newsletter (Issue Volume XX, Issue 2). Without leaving our seats or needing to catch our breath, we took another tour of “Wild Scotland” By John Duncan. This video starts out on the Western Coast and ends up on the East Coast. Spectacular drone footage-aerial photography using a drone. This video was featured in the April 2018 Newsletter (Issue Volume XXI, Issue 4). The last tour was a short video “Bird’s Eye View of Scotland” from the January 2017 Newsletter (Issue Volume XX, Issue 1). This video rang-in the 2017 New Year (Hogmanay) and identified different locations, like Glencoe, Edinburgh, the Moray Coast, Crintan Canal - Argyll, Glamis Castle, Perthshire, Glenfinnan, Glasgow and ended with fireworks over Edinburgh. Next, we were introduced to Google Maps and a

Information For Our New Members

Welcome to our new members. Coming into a new group can be a little scary, but know that if you have any questions, just ask. The people in the SSL are some of the friendliest you would ever want to meet. Here is a little bit of information to get you started:

Read the newsletter and the website. All upcoming events will be listed both places. If you want more information, you can contact any of the board members. Their information is found on the last page of this newsletter.

All meetings will have a business meeting, some time to socialize, and a program.

January/February brings our Burns Night Dinner. You won’t want to miss that. There will be food, drink, raffles, en-tertainment, and an all-around good time.

May starts our “Event” season. The Society sets up a booth at many local and state Scottish and Celtic events, and even a couple of out-of-state events. Don’t be afraid. Jump on in and help us in our booth. It’s not hard, and every-one will help. It is a great way to get to know some of the members

November is a really fun meeting. We have a potluck dinner and an auction. Members will be informed of what type of dish to bring according to last name. The auction is so much fun. Everyone is asked to bring at least one item, if they wish, to donate. Now, you will find that a lot of the items are things you would love to have, but some of them … well, you just have to be there to appreciate it. Proceeds benefit the Heritage Fund, which helps promote the study of Celtic-related “studies” by individuals.

In December, we do not have a meeting.

Please visit the table that is set up at our meetings. You will find brochures for upcoming games, magazines, SSL items that are for sale, and many other things.

We hope that you will attend as many meetings as possible (hopefully all of them). We are so happy to have you as a part of the group.

You can find us on the internet in a couple of places.

On our Facebook page, you are welcome to add pictures from Society events, to post/share some Scottish history or information, or just say “hi.”

Our Society offers a Life Membership Program. You

can attain this status by paying a one-time

membership fee of 10 times the current dues rate.

At this time, a life membership for a single person

is $240. A family life membership is $360.

Please see the Commissioner of Member Services,

Jim Hughes, or email him for more details at

[email protected] about our memberships.

Remember, every new life member is

acknowledged at the Burns Night Gala!

Heritage Fund

The Heritage Fund Committee is accepting applications for the dispersal of scholarship funds. The Fund helps support the

efforts of SSL members to pursue studies of the many different aspects of Celtic culture, which may include music (piping,

drumming, fiddling, etc.), art (dancing, weaving, etc.), language (Gaelic, etc.) and athletics (Highland games).

This Fund can also support a person’s interest in an educational program or project that furthers the understanding of

Scottish culture and history.

Scottish Society members in good standing can apply for funds or can sponsor non-members for scholarships.

The application form and guidelines can be picked up on the evening of the Society’s monthly meeting from the Heritage Fund

Committee Chairperson, Janice Beatty, or by e-mail at [email protected], or by using the online form here.

The deadlines for receipt of applications are March 31st and September 30th.
