CANADIAN FLAGS - CANADA’S 150
Connections
SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST
• Check page 2 for Important Dates to Remember
• Read about all the amazing summer trips and adventures throughout the newsletter!
The project of making Canadian flags started out small
and blossomed beyond our expectations.
If you travel throughout our valley and beyond
you will find our handmade wooden Canadian flags in
honour of Canada’s 150th birthday.
We donated to various organizations that have
been kind to us such as the Bonnechere Manor, Renfrew
Legion, RCAF Wing, Golden Age and Ma-Te-Way
Activity Centre.
The flags were sold in-house and throughout the
community.

Proceeds from this dinner amounted to $536.20 which was split between The Royal Canadian Legion and Community Living Renfrew County South.
Thank you to our family, friends and community for coming out to support this fundraiser.

The Spring Fling has come and gone for another
year. The theme was “Flower Power/
Woodstock” so there were flowers everywhere, a
Volkswagen bus on the wall all made by Annette
Kinslow and the Literacy class. We had a photo
booth just like the 60’s and people were decked
out in fashions of that era. The financial
donations and lots of food were given to the
Renfrew Food Bank. Thank you to everyone
who helped to make this event a success
including the band Mixed Nuts who returned
because of the gentle persuasion of Harris
Wade.
SPRING FLING
Wednesday’s camera club members have been out in
the community every chance we get taking photos.
We have been working on using the different
settings on our cameras, transferring photos to the
computer and to a usb stick.
We are getting our photos ready for our booth
at the Renfrew Fair. We are also learning how to put
photos on to canvas. by Gloria Tunn
CAMERA CLUB
This program is well under way in our new location at
Trinity-St. Andrews United Church Renfrew. We have
a full camp this year with lots of fun activities planned
i.e. weekly trips will be to Logos Land, Xtreme
Trampoline, Museum of Nature; as well as doing a lot
of crafts, games, movies and beach days. A sincere
thank you goes out to everyone who helps to make
this camp a success year after year, especially
donations received from our two golf tournaments;
M. Sullivan & Son Golf Tournament and Laurel
Rafuse Memorial Golf Tournament.

Our Monday Camera Club has been very busy this spring and
summer. We have been to Fulton’s Sugar Bush, Eganville Legion
Park and everywhere in between. This year we have taken up
geocaching as we followed along the Ottawa River and out to the
Bonnechere Caves seeking caches as we go. The Geocache app is
wonderful as we now see places we have been in a different
angle. Watch for more adventures as we hit the roads and trails
with our cameras.
CAMERA CLUB ADVENTURE
Tom Welch and Eric Fevez attended the 100th celebration of the Calabogie Hydro Station. Eric was very interested in the turbines and working of the plant. Tom and Eric took the personal tour and were amazed at the power the water produces.

DRUMMING
On Tuesday June 27th, a small group of individuals
(Joel Raycroft, Peter Reilander, Steven Shane, Greg
Murdock, Bob Delahaye, Kerry Brown, Rebekka
Zimmerling, Travis Tachynsky) did a hand
drumming presentation at Community Living
Renfrew County South’s AGM held at The Grove
Nursing Home in Arnprior.
The individuals practiced for 5 weeks prior to
the AGM, learning the basics of hand drumming at
Main Street School of Music with one of their
teachers, Darius.
During their performance, they showed their
audience what they had learned by putting together
a little display. The audience gave the drummers a
standing ovation at the end.
Special thanks to Darius Moghaddam for his
time and talent.
Everyone really enjoyed learning something
new and we hope to continue the lessons in the fall.
“It was a lot of fun and I want to do it again”. - Joel
“I love to play drums and I was happy that I
was given the opportunity to learn. Best part for me
was that I got to do a solo”. - Greg

ELVIS IS EVERYWHERE!
HURD’S LAKE
All the folks who came out to enjoy the Hurd’s Lake
camp shared various adventures such as a
wilderness walk, canoeing, a picnic lunch and photo
moments. Frank and his crew entertained us by the
shore with their music. It was enjoyable as we
paddled in our canoes.
A particularly exciting time experienced by
Andrew McQuade was catching a small perch from
the beach shore. He posed for a photo with Allan
Yull while everyone hooted and hollered.

Every year we have a group that meets at the Legion in Cobden for
the Valentine’s festivities and this year the group saw Elvis and
Shania Twain impersonators. A couple got engaged at the event. We
had a lot of fun dancing and carrying on. We are already looking
forward to next year’s event and what they have planned.
by Margie Munhall
Josie Laventure, Mark Bergeron, John Kingston all went to the villa
to see Elvis Presley in May. We had a great time listening to all the
Elvis music, making new friends as well as having lots of laughs. We
had juice and cake and Elvis gave Josie a teddy bear.
by Karen Moghaddam
On April 29th Sharon Dellaire took Debbie Broome and I to the
Eganville Legion to see Elvis. Margaret Stewart also brought Isabel
Rusenstrom and Rebekka Zimmerling and we all sat up at the front
by the dance floor. The show was very good. Elvis’son sang too and he
was great. Elvis came over and kissed Debbie and we all got
autographed scarves. We danced and sang a lot and I knew every
song. They served a great lunch and we had a wonderful evening.

A goal accomplished! This year one of my goals was to go see a cow
being milked. On April 12th Liz McFarlane took Kevin Ostroskie,
Eric Teschke and me to visit her cousin Rob Fletcher’s dairy farm,
“Greenlark Farms”.
When we first went into the
barn Rob showed us the calf that
had been born that morning. He let
me name her so I called her
Linda!!! We then watched the cow
“Amelia” get milked on the portable
milking machine. We got to see the
tank filled with two days of milk which was waiting for pickup.
Rob showed us the back barn full of older calves. I also got
to sit in the tractor, it was fun! Thanks to Mr. Rob Fletcher for his
hospitality, for letting us tour his barn and answering our
questions.

This spring unfortunately brought with it
the serious record breaking rainfall which
caused extreme flooding on the Ottawa
River. The Castleford area was one of the
hardest hit locations. This too is the area
where the Community Living Renfrew
County South fishing shack has been
located over the years.
We felt a strong need to assist our
friends during this stressful time as they
have helped us in the past. On May 4, 5, 6
numerous individuals assisted in the
volunteer effort at the Horton sand dome.
This assistance took the form of
helping fill sandbags and loading trailers/
trucks, bringing coffee and food to those
hardworking dedicated volunteers. It was
wonderful for our individuals to be able to
give back to their community and receive
overwhelming thanks in return for their
efforts.
This story was recognized by
Community Living Ontario in their update
in Friday’s newsletter which features stories
across the province.

On June 15th the students from the Literacy class invited us as
well as the general public to celebrate our heritage and their
hard work.
Students picked and researched historic Canadians
and presented (some in costume) at the Legion. As well as
their projects there were colouring contests, nurses from
Renfrew County District Health Unit, Slap Shot McGee from
the NHL/NHA Museum. As no celebration is complete
without one, cupcakes shaped like a Canadian flag to be exact
were served. Thanks to Annette Kinslow for always
encouraging the students to go outside their comfort zones.

President’s Choice was on a mission to make the world a better place by sharing a meal with
others. Their plan was that when we eat together, good things happen. So, on June 29th
Community Living Renfrew County South and Sterling’s No Frills took up the cause of
President’s Choice Eat Together Day by hosting a free BBQ lunch in the CLRCS back parking
lot. We celebrated by sharing a meal and honouring Canada Day with an Eat Together
Parking Lot Party!
Thank you to Sterling’s for doing this with us and thank
you to everyone that came out to join us, even in the rain! We
had a blast and made new friends. So, good things do happen.

All the guys at 485 Coumbes have spent some quality time with their families in the
past couple of months. Family time is so important as they age.
Eric went to Perth to enjoy some celebrations with his Mom and two of his
sisters for a couple of days and had lots of fun.
George has been going over to his sister/brother-in-law’s place for several
overnights, weekend stays and different meals. His family is residing closer now and
makes this easy to get to see them more often.
Sam went with his sister to southern
Ontario to visit and travelled around visiting
others while touring the province with family. Sam
had lots of fun and hopes to keep doing this as it is
a nice get away to golf, fish or drink beer in a
different spot with family.
Dan went to visit his two sisters, a niece and
brother-in-law in Rockland where he enjoyed pizza
and danishes. He had some photos taken with
them and their animals, which is always a favourite
of Dan’s.
The guys are looking forwards to a few R &
R trips such as a boat tour soon.

ANNUAL BALL HOCKEY CHALLENGE
10
On Tuesday May 16th, Community Living Renfrew County
South individuals, the Literacy Class and Community
Mental Health joined forces at Railway Avenue for our
Annual Ball Hockey Challenge. Lots of Sens energy was
alive as the Stanley Cup playoffs were ongoing. Folks
donned their favourite jersey’s. Some played, some
cheered, though I am not sure there was a winner.
Community Spirit once again prevailed!
Over the course of the school year we went to Admaston Public School almost every week. We did projects such as making crafts for Mother’s Day, and planting seeds for our garden in Odd Fellows Park. We completed a large tree which had 150 maple leaves colored, painted, pastels, glittered etc. as well as everyone’s picture. The tree once put together remained in the foyer at Admaston Public School. We joined the class for two end of year gatherings, one at the Ma-Te-Way Splash Pad and the other for bubbles and snacks at the school.
Teresa Powell, Clare Kenopic, Rebekka Zimmerling and Sean O’Neill look forward for the opportunity to return for this project next year. Thankyou to Mrs. Heather Cormier and Admaston Public School for opening its doors to us.
GETTING TO KNOW OUR FRIENDS AT ADMASTON PUBLIC
April 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day, we celebrated
it on April 5th at Low Square as we were unable to attend the
rally on Parliament Hill. Despite the dreary weather, we
played parachute games, sang and had snacks while
inviting the public in to see our displays on Autism.
Autism is just a piece of the unique puzzle in our
community. It is really important that people see our folks
first, see their ability not disability. We are very lucky to
have a caring community who embraces us. Many
supporters crossed the street to see what all the noise was
about. Helium balloons were released to close our rally.
