NHPTV Connections August 2015

Bird Lovers Marathon FlightWhy do birds fly thousands of miles every year

from one distant destination to another? NHPTV’s series of specials on migratory birds explores this question, and introduces us to the people who track and care for these birds.

Join host Will Lange in a three-hour bird lovers marathon as he investigates the curious and colorful lives of New England’s migratory birds that soar across the Americas. Along the way, he

meets scientists, conservationists, farmers, school children, and bird enthusiasts who are dedicated to saving birds and their habitats.

Saving Songbirds kicks off the first hour, as Will meets researchers who employ creative means to assess the health of bird populations, Vermont school children helping to re-forest the mountains of Costa Rica, scientists in Cape May, NJ, who track flocks of migrating songbirds in total darkness,

and Costa Rican coffee farmers who practice bird-friendly methods of cultivation and processing.

In Bird Tales, Will explores why people are so devoted to birds. He meets Sarah Zuccarelli, who lives at a bird sanctuary in NH; a famous birdsong expert; a 16-year-old in Illinois who shares his birding experience through art; a prison inmate in New Jersey who expresses his passion for birds; and young

students who are part of Bridging the Americas, a migratory bird education and conservation program.

Then, in Counting on Birds, Will meets the people dedicated to the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count and learns how the tradition is continued by birders in Maine, New Hampshire, Cuba and Ecuador.
