Message from our President…
I hope everyone is having a great summer enjoying the things you love – family,
friends, vacations, etc. We have been fortunate to have great crowds at our dances
each month. I hope to see more members at our dances in the future. This is the
last full month of summer and I, for one, will be happy to usher in some cooler
weather.
We had great participation in our shag contest on Beach Day. Thanks to everyone
who came out to set up the dance floor and later dismantle the floor. Thanks to
Frank Darzano for emceeing the contest and Robert Carter for providing the music.
A special thanks to all of our SOBS members who came out to participate or watch.
Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot put on a great show and kept the dance floor full. Ken
Koehly, our photographer, got terrific photos from the event.
Look for upcoming information regarding our Project Uplink Fundraiser from our
co-chairs, Katy O’Neil and Mary Ann Gregory. Information will be sent out via
email. This is an event we need help from every member in some capacity. Please
be receptive when approached to assist. The fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday,
October 24th. Mark your calendars!
Keep shagging!

replenished them now.
June 26th dance. The Moose Lodge did not turn on the air conditioning before our dance and the room was still set
up for BINGO, but turnout was good.

So if anyone has something new to share, please get in touch with Joe.
We had 49 people vote on the fund raiser proposal for a golf tournament or our annual auction. It was voted to have

It is with sincere sympathy and sadness that we
announce the passing of long-time St. James resident
and dear friend, Don Mundy. Don passed early in the
morning on Tuesday, July 14, 2015.
Don and his wife Judy moved to St. James Plantation
in the summer of 1998 from Reston, Virginia. Don
had a career in land development in New Jersey,
Maryland and Virginia.
Don leaves his wife of 58 years. Surviving Don are his
children, son Billy, his wife Felicia and their daughter
Deegan as well as daughter Jill, her husband Andy
and their children Lillian and Jack. Don was a twin. His sister Doris survives him. Don was a U.S. Navy veteran;
having served on a destroyer during the Korean War.
Don and Judy were a very active St. James couple. You could find them most anyplace. They enjoyed golf, the beach,
shagging and especially ringing in each New Year, year-after-year, decked out in their formal attire. Don was
always so handsome in his tuxedo and enjoyed dancing away the evening with Judy.
Don loved the game of golf. He even worked part time as a ranger at Carolina National Golf Club in Winding River
Plantation. There he appeared, bright and early each morning, keeping the lady golfers in line. With great affection,
they called him "Captain Don!" He was loved and will be missed by many.
Per family wishes, memorial donations may be made to either the New Hope Clinic in Boiling Spring Lakes or the
Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Bolivia.
Side-note… Kathy & myself, Chuck & Gayle Kutyla, George & Jean McVeigh, and Bahre & Brenda Willis are all
members of Carolina National Golf Club. “Captain Don” was usually our Starter/Marshal when we played on
Tuesdays & Thursdays. He was one of the friendliest and good natured guys you would ever have the privilege to
meet. He always had a kind word to say and a smile on his face! He told me it was because of his “trophy wife”,
Judy! We miss you Captain… Joe Malinowski

Our July 10th SOBS dance was held at the Oak Island VFW. DJ “Chigger” Woods kept the dance floor full as we had a
nice crowd of 67 SOBS in attendance and 9 guests. The HOT weather didn’t keep our shaggers from dancing the night
away! A big “thanks” to Joan Slowik for teaching the “Uptown Funk’” line dance! The member potluck was outstanding
as usual!!
Our July24th dance was held at the Oak Island Moose Lodge with DJ Roy Jerry Burrage. We had 57
SOBS and 4 guests. The temperatures were still in the 90s as well as the humidity, but we had a
nice showing. Thanks to Kim & Mamie Brown for a great “collar turn” shag dance lesson. It’s
hard to believe it’s August already! Come on out and enjoy our Summer dances and let’s “wear
out those WEEJUNS!”

Mike & Joan Slowik...
Describe your family.
We have been married for 54 years. We have 3
married children, Janice, Mick and Jonathan. We
have 6 grandchildren, Ashley, Greg, Laura, Mat-
thew, Taylor and Kiersten. We have 2 great
grandsons, Nelson Jr., and Seth. We have 1 great
granddaughter, Lydia, and one more on the way
expected in August.
Where are you from?
We are from Connecticut. We raised our children
in the country town of Lebanon. We had a small
mini-farm with a couple of horses, cows, rabbits, sheep and chickens.
What’s your background? Work experience/Military/etc.
Mike served in the U.S. Army and retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Middletown, CT. Joan retired from the
University of Connecticut and was Executive Assistant to the Dean of Engineering.
What are your hobbies?
Mike is a gardener and currently raises tomatoes which is a challenge here at the beach, but we usually have a good
harvest for canning. We also have a grape arbor and are currently experimenting with growing Concord grapes
from a root we brought from CT. So far, it is very successful as the grapes are just turning ripe and it looks like the
harvest will be great. We have two peach trees here and last year we canned 16 pints of peaches from just one
tree. This year the trees are loaded with peaches so we expect a really good year for canning. We recently planted
a fig tree so we don't know what to expect, but we're looking forward to that. The peaches and grapes are Joan's
babies but Mike does most of the work that goes into growing. Joan is a line dancer and teaches Improver and In-
termediate line dance at the Southport Senior Center on Thursday afternoons.
How long have you been shag dancing?
We are new beginners at the shag dance and just started this past year.
How & where did you learn to shag?
We are learning from John Hutton & Katie O’Neill teach at the Lazy Turtle every Thursday evening.
What do you like about shag dancing?
It is great for the brain as well as physical exercise. The best part is the socialization and making new friends.
How long have you been a SOBS?
We just joined this year.
What are your hopes for the club? Direction/growth/road-trips/etc.
We just enjoy the dances and meeting new friends.
