Summer Road Trip: South Florida By: Elissa Rodrigues, Community Media Staff Writer
This month we’re ending the Summer Road Trip series with a look at eclectic South Florida. With the possible exception of California, Florida is one of the few states that is overflowing with a variety of state personas. Florida is renowned for its white sandy beaches, but you’d be remiss if you believed that’s all our state had to offer. Central Florida entertains with its numerous theme parks and the Space Coast, North Florida with its “natural Florida” and historic appeal, and then you have South Florida with yet again very different personas: the posh Naples and Boca Raton contrasted with the thumping latin beat and culture-rich Miami, with the laid-back p e r m a -v a c a t i o n feel of our F l o r i d a Keys. Let’s start with Southwest Florida and explore the Fort Meyers / Naples area. No trip to this area would be complete without walking on the white sand beaches of Captiva Island and Sanibel - they’re world famous for fishing, shelling and the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve. Fort Myers has historically attracted famous residents Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, whose winter houses are now primary tourist attractions. Just to the south is Naples, which first settlers compared to its Italian paradise counterpart. Today it boasts a stylish, upscale downtown area with restaurants and chic bars. While visiting, don’t miss the Naples Botanical Gardens, which includes six cultivated gardens, 90 acres of restored native preserve and 2.5 miles of walking trails. Moving farther south and over to the east coast, we come to Fort Lauderdale. Known as the “Venice of America” for its intricate canal system, Fort
Lauderdale has more than 300 miles of inland waterways including the historic New River. Visit Las Olas Boulevard for some shopping, then hop onboard one of the many water taxis as it takes you to dinner. Disembark and reboard whenever you’d like as you explore all Fort Lauderdale has to offer. Visit www.sunny.org to plan your trip now through September 30, 2012, and get a $25 gift card when you book a two-night hotel stay for the limited time promotion. It’s a win-win! Go a little further south, and enter a place like no other: Miami. It feels like you’ve truly escaped into another world. Soak up the culture-rich surroundings, whether you’re in the mood for some excellent Cuban cuisine in Little Havana or
looking to rub elbows with a celebrity on South Beach. Check out a Miami Heat game, or maybe you’re a Dolphin’s fan. Interested in history? Visit the beautiful Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, or head over to Coconut Grove, known as “The Grove” if you’re a local, and catch a movie at CocoWalk. This city has it all. Head about 15 miles south and you’re at the beginning of our Florida Keys, where you can escape to the Conch Republic attitude, far away from stress and worries. The Keys have a Caribbean climate with coconut trees swaying in the breeze and
blue water. It’s also the only frost-free place in the state with world-
class fishing, diving welcomes everyone with its laid back attitude. This chain of islands consist of Key Largo, which boasts it is the “dive capital of the world,” Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West. Once in Marathon, cross the famous Seven Mile Bridge which connects Knights’s Key in Marathon to Little Duck Key in

the Lower Keys. Key West is the southernmost point of the continental U.S., and it’s actually closer to Havana (106 miles) than it is to Miami (127 miles). Residents of Key West make up 32% of the entire Keys population, and they always seem to be celebrating something with a nightly sunset party at Mallory Square on the pier. Immerse yourself into the Keys culture and visit Ernest Hemingway or Tennessee William’s house, take a trolley - or jet ski - tour of the island, grab a slice of key lime pie and enjoy!

Take this Eye-Q test —See how much you knowabout glaucoma Millions of Americans are at risk for vision loss from glaucoma, a leadingcause of blindness in the United States. Are you one of them? If you are, do you know how to reduce your risk of blindness? To determine how high your Eye-Q is, answer the following questions about glaucoma.
1 Glaucoma is more common in African
Americans than in Whites.
2 Glaucoma tends to run in families.
3 A person can have glaucoma and not know it.
4 People over age 60 are more likely to get glaucoma.
5 Eye pain is often a symptom of glaucoma.
6 Glaucoma can be controlled.
7 Glaucoma is caused by increased eye pressure.
8 Vision lost from glaucoma can be restored.
9 A complete glaucoma exam consists only of measuring eye pressure.
People at risk for glaucoma should have an eye examination through dilated pupils.
To see if you have a perfect Eye-Q score, read all the answers on the back. If you got 9 or 10 right, congratulations. You know a lot about glaucoma. If you missed some, review the answers so you can share your knowledge with your family and friends.

True False Not Sure
Page 9

Answers1 True. In a study funded by the National Eye Institute, researchers at The Johns Hopkins University reported that glaucoma is three to four times more likely to occur in African Americans than in Whites. In addition, glaucoma is six times more likely to cause blindness in African Americans than in Whites.
2 True. Although glaucoma tends to run in families, a hereditary basis has not been established. If someone in your immediate family has glaucoma, you should have a comprehensive dilated eye examination every one to two years.
3 True. The early stages of open-angle glaucoma, the most common form, usually have no warning signs. However, as the disease progresses, a person with glaucoma may notice his or her side vision gradually failing.
4 True. Everyone over age 60 is at an increased risk for glaucoma, especially Mexican Americans. Other groups at increased risk are African Americans over age 40 and people with a family history of glaucoma. Children and babies can also develop glaucoma.
5 False. People with glaucoma usually do not experience pain from the disease.
6 True. Although glaucoma cannot be cured, it can usually be controlled by eyedrops or pills, conventional surgery, or laser surgery. Sometimes eye care professionals will recommend a combination of surgery and medication.
7 False. Increased eye pressure means you are at increased risk for glaucoma, but does not mean you have the disease. A person has glaucoma only if the optic nerve is damaged. If you have increased eye pressure but no damage to the optic nerve, you do not have glaucoma. Follow the advice of your doctor.
8 False. Vision loss from glaucoma is permanent. However, with early detection and treatment, the progression of vision loss can be slowed or halted, and the risk of blindness reduced.
9 False. A measurement of eye pressure by tonometry, though an important part of a comprehensive eye exam, is, by itself, not sufficient for the detection of glaucoma. Glaucoma is detected most often during an eye examination through dilated pupils. Drops are put into the eyes during the exam to enlarge the pupils, which allows the eye care professional to see more of the inside of the eye to check for signs of glaucoma. When indicated, a visual field test should also be performed.
True. An eye examination through dilated pupils is the best way to diagnose glaucoma. Individuals at increased risk for the disease should have their eyes examined through dilated pupils every one to two years by an eye care professional.
Get your eyes examined. Don’t lose sight of glaucoma.
