Pine Forest Garden Club members hit the road for their October meeting as members traveled to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens to admire the work of renowned glassmaker, Dale Chihuly. The ladies viewed the gardens at dusk and later after dark. During the evening the Chihuly pieces were illuminated for a spectacular show with the Atlanta skyline as the backdrop. Chihuly’s works were strategically placed to mimic the elements of the gardens. Dinner was enjoyed at Linton’s, a fine dining establishment on the grounds of the Botanical Gardens. The members relaxed at the home of Carla Dunn, daughter of Pine Forest Garden Club member, Elizabeth Dunn. The ladies spent the night at Carla’s home or at The Social Goat Bed and Breakfast, the HGTV Holiday House for 2015. The following morning members toured the Governor’s Mansion and its beautiful grounds. The trip concluded with a luncheon at the Swan Coach House. The next meeting of the Pine Forest Garden Club will be on November 17. Caroline Ritchey, Nature Conservancy intern, will conduct a tour of the Moody Forest.

Savannah Area Council of Garden Clubs

We braved the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew and held our

annual Fall Plant Sale at the Botanical Garden. We had a

beautiful selection of fall annuals, perennials and pass along plants. There were daylilies for sale; the Eagle Scouts helped repair some damage and built us a new picnic

table. The Coastal Master Gardeners were on hand to

answer all plant questions. We netted enough money to pay for

the clean up after the storm. Thanks to Larry Ward, Pat Ryan

and Liz Sills for chairing the event and to all the volunteers.

THE LANDINGS GARDEN CLUB CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY On October 22, 1986, twenty seven women joined together for the first meeting of The Landings Garden Club of Savannah. Today the club has 94 members and continues to be a member of the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. and the National Garden Club, Inc. Four of the original founding members that are still members today are Joan Ross, Marguerite Weisemann, Sandra Wolf, and Lib Yingling. Over the years, they have established committees that organize projects benefiting the island community as well as Savannah. Past large projects include educational programs, landscaping public spaces, developing a nature trail and starting a program to remove litter. In 2005 The Department of Natural Resources designated The Landings “The First Planned Community to attain certification in the Community Wildlife Project”; a project spearheaded by the club. Many of our projects require funding which is made possible by the Ways and Means Committee. Each year club members make and sell hundreds of bows. The proceeds not only fund our projects, but it allows the club to allocate thousands of dollars to charitable giving including many Garden Club of Georgia projects.
