Can you rent a house for a missionary?
Some of our missionaries living in
metro cities are forced to pay huge
rents for the houses they live in
especially in cities like New Delhi,
Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and
Bangalore. This is a financial burden
on the Mission. If you own a house
which you can let out for a low rent,
please consider allowing an IEM
missionary to live there. They will be
a blessing to you and you will be contributing to God’s Mission in
India!

The General Secretary’s Thoughts
Prisoner, yet enjoysand administers freedom
Our dear prayer partners,
India is celebrating its Sixty fourth
Independence Day this month. Our
Lord loves India! We love India! Our hearts are moved with compassion
when we think of the1.21 billion people
living in our country. Though India
secured political freedom, many other
factors like poverty, illiteracy, child
labour, corruption communal violenceand so on continue to oppress India.
One Chief Minister said, “I will make
the capital city of my state like
Singapore.” Great ambition! But
someone responded, “We may change
the appearance of the city, but we can’tchange the attitude of the people.
People are in bondages of various
kinds.” What is the remedy? How can
they be free? According to the Bible,
“Freedom comes by knowing the truth.”
One might pursue freedom usingvarious methods, but Jesus said, “And
you shall know the truth and the truth
shall make you free.” Confused governor
Pilate asked Jesus the most important
question, “What is truth?” Millions are
groping in darkness and confined todungeons. They have no clue. But, the
emphatic words of Paul are, “For this
reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ
Jesus” (Ephesians 3:1). Since he was
conscious of his past, present and
future he realised how the miraculoustransformation took place.
The past condition – Sin: In every
believer’s life there has to be a past – a
life without Jesus, far away from God,
submerged in the miry clay of sin and
filth. Jesus said, “Whoever commits sinis a slave to sin.” But the Scripture
declares that the whole world is a
prisoner of sin (Galatians 3:22)
Therefore, none of us who live on planet
earth can be excluded. Once, my dad
was sharing the Gospel to hisneighbour. When the man heard that
everyone is a slave to sin, he retaliated,
“I don’t even tell lies so how can you
call me a slave to sin?” My dad asked
him, “You might have not told a lie, but
have you not had evil thoughts?”Quickly he responded, “Who can
control our thoughts?” Yes, we are
slaves to sin until we come to know the
truth. We need not be prisoners of sin.
We can be freed from this condition. A
prisoner of Christ looks back withgratitude and says: Thank you Lord that
you changed my past.
The present reality - Christ: But thanks
be to God that, though you used to be
slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly
obeyed the form of teaching to whichyou were entrusted. (Romans 6:17)
Therefore if the Lord Jesus makes you
free, you shall be free indeed. We have
been set free from sin and have become
slaves to righteousness (Romans 6:18).
But because of Jesus’ great love for us,God, who is rich in mercy, made us
August 20115
alive with Christ (Ephesians 2:4,5). Webegin a new journey with Christ,
enjoying the freedom He offers us. None
of us need to continue to be prisoners
of sin. Every redeemed person, who
comes to Jesus, can declare that they
are volunteering to be prisoners ofChrist like the slave who says to His
master in Exodus 21:5, “I love my
master and I do not want to go free.”
The prisoner’s present is more joyful
and purposeful, unlike the past of a
sinner.
The pressing responsibility – Gospel:
“Surely you have heard about the
administration of God’s grace that was
given to me for you” (Ephesians 3:2)
Paul realised that what God has done is
not to be enjoyed selfishly, but to be
given freely to others. He is a prisonerto administer the grace of God – that is
the Gospel. The word “administer” can
be translated as: stewardship -
commissioning or managing of God’s
grace. He also says it is “a gift given tome” which needs to be shared with the
people who are prisoners of sin. It is a
compelling responsibility and the
prisoners of Christ do it out of
reverence for the Lord, not for
remuneration. If only every Christianrealises this and gets involved in the
Gospel work, our nation would
experience to true freedom very soon.
Dear reader, we have only few more
months in this year. Will you take a
bold step to offer freedom in Christ to
people who are dead in trespasses andsins, who walk according to the course
of this world, according to the prince of
the power of the air, the sons of
disobedience, and are living in lust,
indulging in the desires of the flesh and
of the mind?
One of the highlights of the IEM Societymeeting which was held in Nasik in lastJune was a trip to Devalali, the birthplace of IEM. We were told this placewas the breeding ground for many newinitiatives in Missions such as IndiaMissions Association. Then we visitedthe Nasik mission field, where we foundthe planting of new churches and theconstruction of a new church building.
New HostelsWe have started new hostels forunderprivileged children among thePuroik people (Arunachal Pradesh), andalso in Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh aswell as a day care centres in Koraput(Orissa) and among the Hadothi peopleof Rajasthan. If you are burdened tosupport a child please write to us. Wecan help you invest in the life of aneedy child.
I take this opportunity to thank ourdear Rev. O. S. Mawroh, who was theChairman of IEM Board for the last twoyears. I thank Mr. Satish Rajkumar whoserved as the Honorary Treasurer. Weare grateful to the outgoing Societymembers who served the Lord duringthe past 5 years.
It is my joy to introduce and welcomeour new Chairman Rev. Dr. K. T. Kurien. He has been associated with IEM since1967. I welcome Mr. K. P. Raja Sekhar, the Treasurer and the new Societymembers. Please continue to pray for theBoard members as they lead us forward.
Please pray for me as I minister at theMethodist Mission’s conference inSingapore, at the invitation of Rt. Rev.Robert Solomon. Then Mercy and I willbe visiting our Friends of IEM in NewZealand and Australia in September andOctober.

August 20116
Well done, Rev OS Mawroh!
“This is a Faith Ministry”In the year 2000, God led me to the IEM Headquarters inBangalore to sign a MOU between IEM and the Jingiaseng Samla(youth wing) of KJP synod (now KJP assembly). From 2008, Iserved as an IEM Board member.
I learnt 2 important things during my journey with IEM. First, thefact that, “Faith” ministry is practical and second, the need to relyon God individually and collectively?
In my first Board meeting someone asked me how funds are obtained. OurGeneral Secretary said, “This is a faith ministry, and we have faith in God whoprovides for our needs.” I wondered, “What is faith ministry? How can we collectthe money proposed in the budget through faith?” We prayed and by the end ofthe financial year 2009-2010, I was amazed to learn that the target was achievedby “FAITH” alone. I learnt, once again to trust Him fully.
“Where does your strength lie?” (Judges 16:6) This question held my thoughts as Ireturned from my last Board meeting in Nasik, Maharashtra. I wondered wheremy strength came to serve as Chairman for one term. “The joy of the Lord is mystrength” was the answer. I do hope that all of us working in the mission fields ofthe Lord will do something for His Name because we get strength from the joy Hehas promised us.”
“My peace (joy) I give unto you” he said. We can therefore bear all things, workhard in spite of many problems on the way. Let the world know that our strengthcomes from the joy of the Lord and by faith we will win the souls of men to Christ,as it is written: “Who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises...”

Nissi’s Mite for Missionary WorkWhen can a person begin praying for and contributing to missionary work?Probably when one gets a secure, stable job and has extra money to spare, aftertaking care of one’s needs. Not really.
Meet Nissi! This girl was in standard 9 when she actually began supporting IEMusing her pocket money. Her interest in missionary work is amazing and in fact, she’s also got her friends involved. And God never let her down. Nissi’s father isno more but she’s not discouraged. She studied hard and secured a goodpercentage in her final exams. Nissi’s uncle, Mr. Shailesh Amin and his wifeSheela serve in IEM and they encourage Nissi to keep growing in the Lord and herlove for missionary work. What about you?
Rev. Mawroh, we covet your continued association
with us and we assure you of our prayers.
August 20117
Welcome Rev. Dr. K.T. KurienDear friends of IEM,
Greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I consider it aGod-given privilege to greet to you in my capacity as the newChairman of IEM.
First, let me introduce myself. My association with IEM goesback to 1967 when I was a high school student. I was invited toattend the first IEM Missionary Convention at Tiruvalla inKerala. At that meeting, I dedicated myself to Christ. Later I went to SIBS,Bangarapet for theological studies. There I became more acquainted with IEM.After my higher studies I was ordained as a clergy of CSI in 1983. Throughoutthese years, “mission” was my main agenda. For many years, I was the missiondirector of my Diocese. Now I believe God has given me this opportunity to bepart of the evangelization of India.
The purpose of IEM is 2-fold: first, to reach the unreached with the Gospel andsecond, to equip the Indian church for mission. When I look at IEM today, I amsure that we have not deviated from the original purpose and I praise God for that.
I am thankful to the leaders who led this missionary movement thus far. At thisjuncture, as Chairman of IEM, I covet your prayer support. The Lord’s agenda ismission and as servants of Christ Jesus we are co-workers together with Him. Solet us not forget this great task which is entrusted to us. Please continue to
uphold IEM in your prayers.
Yours in service
Rev.Dr. K.T.Kurian
From among the Tharu people
Thanks for PrayingIn answer to the prayers of God’s people, we moved into a new Hostel building.
You played a key role in making this happen!
It is very difficult to find a good, spacious, well-ventilated house in Pallia.Because you prayed, we found 2 adjoined portions with 4 spacious rooms, 4
toilets and 2 bathrooms and lobbies. Our God is a wonder-working God. He has
done marvelous things. Even though we had to shift at short notice, God moved in
the heart of a non-Christian man! He is kind and allowed us in even after hearing
about our work! The rent – Rs 9000/- is quite high for 2 portions but it is located
near schools.
Our boys’ broad smiles of joy make our efforts worthwhile. We want to move to
our own building as soon as possible. Please pray for this big need.

Nation Building
When we were in New Delhi, I attended a “Day of Prayer,” organized by Delhi
churches on Gandhi Jayanthi (Gandhiji’s birthday). People from all faiths also
attended. The preacher declared that only a child of God can pray for the nation!
Standing next to me was a Sikh man who had just accepted Christ. I asked him,
“Why did you come to the meeting?” He replied, “Only Christians pray for the
nation on their radio and TV programmes. I am glad I’m a child of God today!”
What a testimony! The contribution of the Christian community to nation
building is remarkable. William Carey, Amy Carmichael, Mother Teresa, Pandita
Ramabai, Mother Brand and many others are good examples.
The Bible and church history in the
past and the present
communicate the role and the
responsibility of the people of God
towards the nation and God’s creation.
Let us see the following aspects from
the biblical context and historical
reflection as to how God is at work in
making His people contribute for the
betterment of the people.(nations)
1. Ethical values and Theological
Reflections
Biblical values are rooted in the Bible
and reflected in the actions and
attitudes of true Christians.
a. The Creation
God created the human being “in his
own image” (Genesis 1: 27). This lends
value and equality to humans and
dispels discrimination. Every person is
a carrier of God’s purpose. The Gospel
of Christ echoes this message in
different parts of our nation and people
are beginning to value their lives.
Christianity promotes equality and
values portrayed through God’s love.
Mother Teresa declared, “Many people
mistake our work for our vocation. Our
vocation is the love of Jesus!”
b. The Covenant
The covenant between God and Israel
began with God. He chose the people to
be His partners. When God made a
covenant with Abraham (Genesis 12:1-
3), it was to partner with God to be a
channel of blessing to the nation of
Israel and the peoples of the earth.
Jesus’ emphasis on His followers being
the salt and light of the world, reflects
their role towards their fellow humans
and God’s creation as a whole. Life is
not just self-centric.
c. The Commandment
God gave the Law to His children to
fulfill their standing, their
relationships and responsibilities. God
sought orderliness and discipline in the
day –to-day life of people for a peaceful
and purpose-oriented existence. Exodus
20 reveals distinct characteristics that
need to be nurtured for a smooth,
peaceful and harmonious life. They
were asked to pass on these values to
their children (Deuteronomy 6:7) so that
August 20119
this will in turn lead to a peacefulcommunity life. The Ten Commandmentsexpress spiritual, moral, ethical andsocial values and responsibilities. Itdoes not emphasize the uniqueness ofthe individual’s divine call alone butalso his generic character. The law andorder of the nation derives it’s principlefrom the god-given natural law.
2.Empowerment
Here are a few examples from the Biblewhere God reached out to people.
a. The Discriminated
Even though King Saul plotted to killhim, David wanted to restore to Saul’srelative what was rightfully his (2Samuel 9). He affirmed thatMephibosheth, though physicallychallenged, was a human and deservedto live with dignity. The downtrodden insociety need to be freed from theirsuffering.
b. The Dejected
When a leper begged Jesus to make himclean, Jesus reached out, touched himand made him clean. This speaks of theintegration of dejected people insociety.
c. The Depraved
In John 4, we read how Jesus accepted awoman who was an outcaste andtransformed her life.
To instill values and awareness,Christian workers rescued people fromsocial evils like the caste system, untouchability, sati (wife willinglyburns herself on her husband’s funeralpyre), forced widowhood and humansacrifice.
3. Economic Development
The Bible records instances where God
used His people to impact society
administratively and economically as
well.
a. Planning
Joseph planned and executed measures
to handle the 7-year famine in Egypt
(Genesis 41).
b. Prayer
Paul urged that requests, prayers,
intercession and thanksgiving be made
for kings and all those in authority so
that everyone could lead a quiet and
peaceful life (1Timothy 2:1, 2).
c. Participation
When severe famine was predicted in
the Roman world, the disciples decided
to help for the brothers in Judea
(Acts 11: 27-29).
4. Encountering Evil Structures
In Luke 3:7-14, John the Baptist spoke
against tax collectors, soldiers and
others and commanded them to repent
of their sins. The church must exercise
a prophetic witness towards the wider
society. Exodus 1: 15-22 and 2: 1-10
point out that motivation is the key
element to restructure an unjust
society. Here are some of the insights.
“Fear of God” was the motivating
factor for Shiprah and Puah to fight
against the evil structure in Egypt. It
is religious in character and
activated by faith.
“Love” was the fundamental motive
to save the baby.
“Concern” was the key for the sister
to save her baby brother in her own
capacity. It is called the ‘kinship-
ties’ motivation.
“Compassion” moved Pharaoh’s
daughter to save the unknown baby.
August 201110
It was against the order of her father
but the motivation was based on
human feeling and human concern.
“Co-operative work” was the key to
success where each one tried their
best, not counting the danger
involved, with a common interest to
save the child. Their initiative led to
great reward.
Social Justice
Here are a few instances where God
intervened through Jesus to bring about
social justice.
Woman caught in adultery
Jesus forgave the woman caught in
adultery by exposing the hypocrisy of
the Jews who had caught her (John 8: 1-11)
Corruption
Zacchaeus was a tax collector who
cheated people but was reformed when
he encountered Jesus and made
restitution. (Luke 19: 1-10)
Injustice
John the Baptist spoke out boldly
against powerful Herod, who had
committed a great sin by taking his
brother’s wife as his own.(Matthew
14:4) Ultimately, John the Baptist was
beheaded on account of this.
5. Ecological Concerns1
Today’s ecological problems are
manifested in the deterioration ofman’s natural environment through
industrialization and urbanization. God
created the entire universe and found it
to be good (Genesis 1: 31). If God finds
creation good, then each element in it
has value. The essence of the divine iscreativity and love. Human beings, as
the image of the divine, have the duty
and privilege to be in partnership with
God in creativity and love.
6. Eternal Life
It is the will of God that all human
beings should be saved. As a result,
Jesus Christ came into this world to
seek and save the lost. Paul the apostle
to the Gentiles testified that his heart
desired that all Israelites were saved. He said that they had a great zeal for
God, but it was not based on knowledge
((Romans 10:2). Christians have a
pivotal role to play in the progress and
prosperity of our beloved India.
Some people make things happen.
Some people hear that something is
happening
Some people oppose things happening
Some people help other people make
things happen
In what category do you and I fall into?
Jeevan Jyothi Boys’ Hostel, Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh
“Today is special,” exclaimed our missionary Shibu Mathew, when we calledhim on July 12, 2011. “At 4.30pm today, the Jeevan Jyothi Boys’ hostel willbecome a reality.” Eight boys, most of whom come from Christian familieswill be the first privileged occupants of this hostel. Missionary ThebaTimothy will be the first warden. Initially, the boys will be studying in a Hindimedium school nearby. Next year, depending upon how the children cope, they might be admitted into an English school. Do uphold our missionaries inprayer.

The Hostel Ministry
From Children to
Soldiers of the CROSSThe Inspiration
The Hostel was ministry initiated to fulfil a
felt need of the communities among whom
we are ministering. Most of our
missionaries work in remote places where good
educational facilities are almost absent. When
people come to the Lord, they long for their
children to receive good and affordable
education. IEM leaders realized this and decided
to start hostels for tribal children.
The Implementation
Believers wanted missionaries stationed in
smaller towns to host their children when they
admitted their wards in the middle and high
schools. When the number of children increased,
the missionaries were compelled to start hostels.
For example in Mayurbhanj (Orissa) missionfield where we minister to HO people, parents
would bring the needed rice and vegetables so
that the missionaries could run the hostel with
minimal expenditure. In 1996 – 97 we cared for
151 children and in partnership with other
agencies another 83 children were looked afterthrough 7 hostels.
A large number of children have benefited and
been blessed by the hostel ministry. We have
several success stories. These inspiring stories
describe how children from very poor background,
without any scope of good education, have comeup in life due to the care and support we gave them
through our hostels. To illustrate, let’s read (Side bar)
Sarita’s story in her own words.
The Involvement
At present, we start hostels for one strategic
reason. It is one of our 4 Strategic Initiatives,
The Insight
“Sir, I Tellam Saritha,
daughter of Tellam Yerranna,an evangelist studied from
2nd standard to 12th
standard in an IEM hostel
with support from Pandita
Ramabai Mukti
Mission(PRMM). Themanagement helped me in
my academic and spiritual
welfare.
In standard 9, I accepted the
Lord as my personal Savior.
Since then, I decided to live
according to the will of theGod. But I am backsliding in
some areas in my day to day
life, but I regularly pray and
read the word of God and am
strengthened through HisWord.
In Luke chapter 1, God spoke
to me that, “Everybody lives
for some reason and what
are you living for.”
When I was sick, my father
did not come forward todonate blood but you have
come forward to help me in
blood transfusion. Since
then, I have learnt to help
others in their time of need.
All this I have learnt throughthis ‘home.’ Thank you all.”

aimed at the future function of the local
church. It is to strengthen the Church
leadership through second generation
Christians. Today’s children are
tomorrow’s leaders. If we do not instil
Christian values and bring them up in
godly ways, our churches will lack
quality leadership, lose steam and
eventually die.
Praise God that from the very
beginning, we have had great
partnerships with like minded
organizations who are also involved in
the hostel ministry.
The Boys’ hostel at Krishnagiri Field
[Indienhilfe], The Girls’ Hostel in Koya
field [ with PRMM] and the hostel at
Garasia field, Mount Abu [PRMM) are
run successfully in partnerships with
other organisations. A total of 100
children are benefitting through these
partners.
The Interlinking
The hostel ministry supports the church
planting efforts of the Mission. This
holistic ministry endeavours to ensure
that the children under our care will
become mature men and women of God.
Our hostels cater to the educational,
emotional, mental, social, spiritual and
moral needs of the children.
Jesus said, “Let the children
come to me and forbid them
not…” We aspire that the
children will be witnesses to
God’s greatness and
goodness. We want all the
children to be granted equal
opportunities, just like our
own children so that they can
reach what they dream to be.
They walk in as children and
walk out as soldiers of the Cross!
This year, 4 Hostel’s were started taking
the combined strength of our hostels to
396 children. We foresee all our
mission fields with churches and hostels.
This year, we are building a spacious
building to house the Jeevan Jyothi
Girls’ Hostel in Krishnagiri. Children
from other groups like HO, Tharu and
Chenchu, to name a few are waiting for
proper buildings as well. God willing,
we want to see all the hostels having
spacious rooms and playgrounds.
The hostel demonstrates our love for
the community. It also enhances the
capacity of the second line leadership
in the community just as we enhance
the leadership skills of our new believers.
Our missionaries have recognized this
and therefore are involved in a special
ministry to children. “I look at these
children like MY children,” declared one
of our missionaries. And this is the
relationship that binds the
missionaries to the children among
whom they work. Further, we have
discovered that the way to a man’s
heart is through his children. Our
ministry to parents is often through
their own children.

A Christian Hostel stands as a practical model for Christianity in Society. The
children in the hostel will become good fathers or mothers as well the future
leaders of the church and the Nation, having developed Christian character and
values.

The Hostel is a School
The hostel is a place of learning.
Someone said, “Learning begins at
home.” Most of our hostel children’s
parents are non-literate. They engage in
cultivation throughout the day so they
have no time for their children. I
remember when we started our hostel
among the Rana Tharu people. It was
tough! Everything was new to the little
ones. We had to teach them how to be
clean, how to bathe, brush, wash, eat,
write, read and so on. In fact children
learn more in the hostel than in school.
The missionary warden is a teacher, a
tutor and an examiner. Further, the
child grows spiritually as well. Here,
the child learns to pray, praise, sing
and understand God’s Word.
The Hostel is a Training Camp
Strange as it may sound, this fact
cannot be ignored. Most of our children
lived like free birds in their homes.
Rules and regulations were new to
them. Time mattered little. Thediscipline practiced in the hostel shookand shocked them. Everything was doneaccording to schedule. They learnt tomingle with children from differentvillages. They also learnt to faceseparation from their loved ones,
A common understanding of a
students’ hostel is “a lodging
place” for students. Normally, a
nominal fee is charged from the
students for the services rendered to
them and profit is the main motivation.
However, for missionaries, the
motivation is not money. Many
Christian organizations run hostels for
poor and underprivileged children and
are generally free. Mission hostels aim
to see that children develop physical,
mentally, economically, socially and
spiritually. Its twin perspective is
church growth as well as nation
building.
Let’s take a closer look at the hostel
ministry.
The Hostel is a Home
The hostel is a home that shelters the
homeless, humiliated, downtrodden,
downcast, depressed and exploited
little children. A home his more than
just a building. It is a family. It is a big
family comprising of many children.
Missionary wardens are not just
wardens, they are parents to the
children under their care. When a child
falls ill, wardens play the role of caring
parents. Long lasting relationships are
built.
August 201114
especially their parents. They learnt tocope with the pangs of loneliness.
The Missionary WardenThe hostel ministry is not easy. It can bea tedious round the clock ministry. Thewarden is not a king he is a chowkidhar
(security guard), a cook, a laundry man,a watchman, a waterman, a guardianand so on. He is also a teacher, a tutor,a trainer and much more. At times, thewarden has to help wash clothes andeven give small children a bath. In otherwords, the warden is an all-rounder.
It was my privilege to visit mission fields in Nasik, Maharastra and Dangs,Gujarat on June 19th and 20th, 2011, after the IEM Society meeting.
In Nasik, we visited the Autyapani church where about 22 families gather forworship every Sunday. In this region, we have 150 believers in total belonging to
the Kukna tribe. Presently there are 8 evangelists and 12 worship groups and a
Boys’ Hostel here. We moved to Bandarpada, where Good Church meets. We
attended Sunday service here. Some of the tribal students were educated and are
now working as evangelists in the village.
In Dangs we heard recollections of sweet memories of our missionaries’ ministry
from Mr. Solomon Swami Doss. At Chirupada, local pastors Rev. Vaman and Rev.
Sakaram led in worship. We heard that 2015 Kukna tribal believers openlyconfessed their faith in the Lord so far. There are 24 churches, 9 evangelists, 4
helpers and 2 pastors at present. Many believers are educated and qualified as
teachers, nurses, technicians and so on.

A Ministry Reflection
The Andamans Adventure
In 1977, we moved to Rangat in Middle
Andaman from Port Blair to work among
Tamil labourers. We looked for a good
nursery for our son Timmy but found none except
a “Balwadi” run by the Community Development
Block. The concept of a nursery school was non-
existent. So in August 1978, we set up the Good
Shepherd Nursery School with 10 children at
Rangat. Our capital money was a paltry Rs.150/-!
Our contacts in Rangat increased. Children of government staff, officers, nurses
and teachers came to the school. Bengali, Hindi, Malayalam, Punjabi, Tamil,
Telugu and Bihari speaking boys and girls studied here. During the evenings, we
visited the families of the children and shared God’s love with them. Later, our
children fared well in higher classes in other schools. In 1989, we handed over
our school to the Methodist church with joy and great satisfaction.
Sunday School ministry
Rosy started a Sunday School for believers’ children in Rangat church. Twenty five
children gathered every Sunday and Rosy taught Bible stories, songs and
Christian conduct. During special occasions, they presented good Christian
programmes. Now, most of them have established good Christian families. They
communicate with us even today.
Over to Krishnagiri
Jeevan Jyothi Hostel for Boys
In 1989, we moved to Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu to take over from Rev. R. Prabhu
who had established the work among Kurumba and Irula people.
When we visited the villages, we saw plenty of children in every village. Once we
asked a boy, “How many members are there in your family?” He started counting
on his fingers and looked confused! These children are very active but not cared
for. Irulas did not seem to bother about whether their children attended school or
had eaten anything. Many children were sickly and malnourished.
Our hearts went out to them. We loved them dearly and wanted to help them. We
felt that if given an opportunity, they would shine like every other child. We
prayed for them and asked God to guide us. We selected 3 Irula boys and brought

them into our home. One of our bedrooms becametheir living room. For one year we faced manydifficulties. Gradually they learnt hygiene, and how toread and write. Often they ran away from the hostel.
On July 15th 1990, we inaugurated the Jeevan Jyothihostel. Our Overseas Associate, Rev. James Zottnickpromised to help us to construct a good hostelbuilding. Meanwhile, the strength of the hostelincreased so we rented a bigger house toaccommodate more children. Indienhilfe, a Bangalorebased organization offered to sponsor our hostelchildren. In 1994, we dedicated a new hostel buildingfor the glory of our God. We are grateful to God forRev. James Zotnick, and Mr. P. Sethu, Director,Indienhilfe for sponsoring 40 children.
Over to the Girls!
When we visited villages to collect deserving boys forour hostel, Rathna, a girl from Poovathi villagepleaded, “Uncle take me also to the hostel. I toowanted to study.” That struck us. So IEM started theJeevan Jyothi Girls’ hostel with six inmates housed ina separate building.
In 2002, my wife and I retired from IEM. God enabledus to settle down at Coimbatore. Since we have manypictures of our hostel children, we look at them andpray for them. Ecclesiastes 11:1 encourages us to trustGod and believe that our work will not be in vain.

A “Mithun” for the Master!“Mithun” in Manipur means money. They are worth
their weight in gold! A family’s wealth is not gauged by
his bank balance but by the number of Mithuns he
owns. A Mithun is a huge buffalo. To part with one of
them is indeed a big sacrifice.
Praise God, our Area Coordinator from Chandel district,
brother JS Jamvol sold one of his Mithuns for a sum ofRs 11,000 and sent the money to IEM.
We praise God for this act of love. This is a shining example of how much our
supporters sacrifice for the sake of the Gospel.

Trophy of His Grace
The Fruit of Our Ministry
“My family hailed from Barur village in Krishnagiri district ofTamil Nadu. We accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour22 years ago through the ministry of Indian EvangelicalMission. There was not a single Christian in our area beforeIEM came to us. Through their ministry, 6 churches were builtfor new believers to worship the Lord. Of these, 5 were handedover to CSI to the Coimbatore Diocese. IEM not onlyconcentrates on reaching the unreached; it also works towardsthe all round development of people.
When I wanted to discontinue my studies, IEM missionary, Rev. J. Rajaiah advisedme to continue my schooling. In 1993, I committed myself for full-time ministry atan IEM Youth Camp. Later, Rev.E.D.Rajasingh Elias encouraged me to do myundergraduate studies at Bishop Heber College, Trichy, where my calling forpastoral ministry was confirmed. Later, I did my theological studies at The UnitedTheological College, Bangalore.
From Krishnagiri 4 of us - Rev. Arun Thilagam, Mr.Timothy, Mr.DavidDhanalakshmanan and I committed ourselves for the fulltime ministry and arepresently serving the Lord in our given responsibilities. I am thankful to God andthe missionaries who played a vital role in changing our lives. I assure them of
my continuous prayer support for the work of IEM in our country and abroad.

Anganwadi in Renodiya, Rajasthan
Fifteen boys and girls, aged 3-5 were admitted to the Anganwadi (Pre
primary day care centre) in Renodiya village on the opening day July 11,
2011. Aptly named Jeevan Jyothi Anganwadi, this venture provides
opportunities for our missionaries to visit many contacts in the surrounding
villages. Subjects like alphabets in Hindi and English, games and number
work will occupy the minds of these precious little ones from 8am-11am
with a snack break in between. The inaugural ceremony was attended by 60
people, including the village headman, who appreciated the work done by
our missionaries. During the evenings, tuition classes are conducted for
high school students. “We need a hostel here!” pleads missionary Senthil
Kumar. Will you participate in this dream?

Salikutty “Sails” in the
Saviour’s Service
Missionary nurse Miss Salikutty Joseph
is not unfamiliar to the readers of IEM
Outreach. We know how the Lord
sustained her when she sailed through
stormy seas when she was found to
have cancer. “How are you now?” we
asked her recently. “I talk to Jesus
about my problem. The pain persists but
for the last 2 years, I have not taken any
treatment for cancer!” In the same
breath, she adds, “God gave me a
promise from Jeremiah 33:6,
`Nevertheless, I will bring health and
healing to it; I will heal my people and
will let them enjoy abundance, peace
and security.” What an assurance!
What a comfort. Will you continue to
uphold this dear sister in your prayers?
Koya Hostel Girl

What an eventful journey it has
been! We praise God that our

little girl’s life has reaped rich
dividends. Would you pray that
others like Vengamma will
understand the joy of studying in
our hostels and desire to serve the
Lord?

centre in Ahmadabad. Reason? They
were afraid to be left alone with a
suffering woman if we missionaries
were not present with them. Later the
woman died!
If only her loved ones had some basic
education, things could have been
different. This incident stirred my mind
and I felt a strong urge to do something
more for this community. Prayerfully,
God led us to start a hostel for Garasia
tribal children. Manju, the woman’s
youngest daughter joined our hostel.
We have a great vision for this
motherless girl.
Location
The hostel is located in Danta, a small
town in Gujarat. This place was ruled
by an independent king and his palace
still stands. The whole area is filled
with Rajputs (kingly people). Beautiful
hills surround the place. The weather is
extremely warm during summer and
cold during winter. Rainfall is also
widespread. Besides other animals,
monkeys are found in abundance.
Former IEM medical missionary, Dr.
Vinod Shah and his medical team ran a
hospital in the king’s palace from 1989
for a period of time.
Vision
We expect our children to be Salt and
Light in the society through their
witness and that strong and vibrant
churches will be established.
On June 18, 2010, the Garasia tribal
children’s hostel in Danta was started
in a one-room rented house which is
walking distance from the school. The
children are faring well in their studies.
The hostel carries a good witness in the
neighborhood. The children study at the
Ebenezer Gujarati medium School, run
by Mr. Liju George.
Believers Joseph and Manju are the
wardens. They diligently carry out the
task God has assigned to them. Joseph
grasps new concepts very quickly.
Manju also plays a pivotal role. On
March 16th, 2011, they were blessed
with a baby girl.
Challenges
Initially, it was very tough to handle
young children. Home sickness affected

the younger ones while the older
children wanted to run away. To make
them feel at home by showering them
with love was a great challenge. To give
them parental love and make them feel
at home, more time has been invested
for them and that is the greatest
challenge in the beginning. By God’s
grace, the children accepted us as their
house parents. Now the hostel is
accepted by the parents and local
people.
We need our own hostel building and a
good school nearby. This will ensure a
better future for the children and turn a
vision into reality.

We are privileged people
because we serve and
worship the almighty God,
our Father. The Lord knows our need
and what is best for us.
Mrs.Seema from Ranodiya village was
possessed by evil spirits for many
years. One day, she came to our house
and we started to pray for her. The evil
spirit began to shout and rolled her
down. Her husband Mr. Revdilal
opposed us. The family went through
severe problems. One night, when we
were away, she was very disturbed. Our
Missionary Mr. Joel Sarkar prayed for
her and she experienced great relief.
On Sunday, June 26, 2011, Mrs. Seema
came to the worship service. When we
started singing, she was disturbed by
the evil spirit. It began to shout and
roll her on the ground. It said, “I won’t
go!” Villagers gathered in our house but
we didn’t stop worshipping. After 2
hours, the spirit shouted and left her.
Now Seema is praying and regularly
attends our meetings. Her husband, who
opposed us earlier, is now reading the
Bible and attending prayer meetings
regularly. Now 8 adults and 5children
attend the worship services regularly.
Mr. Sonu kumar is 20 years and is also
from Ranodiya village. In 2010, he
wrote his 10th standard Board exams
and failed. He was very discouraged
and lonely. We know him for around 3
years. He had even helped with Hadothi
Bible translation work. So we
encouraged him to study hard. By the
grace of God, he passed the exam,
scoring 50 percent. Now he is helping
us in evangelism and is sharing Christ
with his relatives. He has committed his
life to serve the Lord. Above all, the
Lord’s Name is glorified.

HO Ministry Highlights
From Bondage to FreedomThe Ho people group have undergone a great and inspiring change. From beingcaptive to the powers of darkness 25 years ago, many have been delivered fromthe bondage of darkness by the living God who saw their condition.
On October 6th, 1986, 2 IEM missionaries - Rev. David Barnabas and Rev. PradeepKumar Das pioneered the work among theHO people and preached the Gospel ofdeliverance to them. The power of darknesswas shattered as God began to work andcontinues to work in spite of many obstacles.
The Gospel brought transformation inpeople’s lives. Once they lived in the fear ofspirits and death, without any peace.Gradually, they have been delivered fromfear and there is change in every sphere oftheir lives. Their struggles have now ended. There has also been a great movement in ministry.
Though there was no Bible in their tongue,God brought a family from Kerala, JohnMathai & Elizabeth, who learnt the HOlanguage and began the work of translation. The first draft of the New Testament, exceptthe Book of Revelation is ready. The booksof Malachi, Proverbs, 1 and 2, Timothy,Titus, Philemon and 1, 2, and 3 John areready for printing. The Gospel of Mark andthe books of Jonah and Ruth are alreadyprinted. We praise God for the progress made.
The literacy work too has improved. Whenthe church was formed, there were noliterate people. Now are several literate people. We began a girls’ hostel. Whenthey first arrived at the hostel, they happened to eat chillies. Being very young, they could not stand the spiciness and wept bitterly. Now they have gone homehappily with their certificates, having overcome the struggle.
God raised 10 evangelists and church leaders who He is using mightily. A newfield has opened in Jharkhand. Uday Mahali and his family need your prayers.
A lady who was possessed by a demon and her husband went with their son fromvillage to village looking for a witch doctor who could heal her. However, the sonwas also demon-possessed. Eventually, they came to church for prayer and weredelivered. Now they are worshipping the true God. Praise God for His great workamong these people!

Chenchu Hostel
Grooming Children Gradually
Our believers admitted their
children in a school run by a
certain Society. This Society provides free
education and medicines to the tribal people in this
region. However the children were troubled and ill-
treated because of their parents’ faith in Jesus. So the
parents requested us to start a Christian hostel.
The hostel was started in July 2008 with 8 children,
aiming to provide the children with sound spiritual
principles, good education in addition to providing for
their physical needs.
It is a great challenge to care for children because they
come from the and are not used to rules and regulations. Here are some
testimonies…
Akunna was 6 when he joined the hostel. He would cry every day. One day, he ran
away from the hostel. We searched but could not find him. Finally we found him
on the way to his home. So we handed him over to his parents and returned
home.
This year, after the Pongal holidays, 2 of our boys - Vijay Kumar and Nagarjuna
went missing. We assumed they would have gone to their home but they did not.
Finally we found them in a paddy field! They were afraid to face the impending
exams.
The Challenges before us
Taking care of these children is not easy because they do understand rules and
regulations. Hostel life never suits them. At home they are used to climbing trees
so they continue to do so. Sometimes, the cry when they return to the hostel. But
there is real joy in caring for these precious little ones because one day they will
turn out to be young men who will make a mark for God wherever they go.
We need to purchase a piece of land to construct a hostel building. This is a
desperate need, keeping the future in mind. Would you pray for us and with us
for this need?
We regret to inform you that our missionary, Rev. M.G. Daniel’s MOTHER, waspromoted to glory on July 1, 2011. Do pray for the family as they passthrough this time of grief.

Sunday School Teachers Training
Teaching Teachers to Teach
Everyone is important in the eyes of God. He created everyone with apurpose and He does things far beyond the imagination of human beings. When we least expect, He changes situations so that we follow the path He
wants us to follow. He knows our needs and requirements before we even ask Him.
I had a burden to conduct Sunday classes for children, VBS and children’sretreats in Nasik mission field. If we don’t move in this direction, our churcheswill dry up soon. So we started praying. God gave me an opportunity to conductSunday School training programmes in Banderpada. God helped me translate thelessons from Gujarati to Marathi and this was checked by Mrs. Martha Mavli(PRMM’s warden in Nasik).
According to the plan, 15 people gathered to fast and pray for the trainingprogramme in Banderpada village. The following day, 15 trainees includingladies participated in the programme. The training consisted of song practicefollowed by 4 sessions on the topics
1) God is our Creator (lesson 1&2)2) God is our Protector (lesson 3& 4)
Their Reflections
“I always wanted to serve in the children ministry but never knew how to start. After coming to this training I learnt how to share the good news to children in
order to attract them towards kingdom of God.”- Mr. Kanthilal from Manglidhar
“I was burdened for the children ministry. But after being invited, I understoodwhat God’s plan is for me.”
- Mr. Kalu Ramsingh Barde from Umbergaon (Evangelist)
“I praise God for choosing me. We continually pray for the children’s ministry.God heard our prayer and we could attend this programme.”
- Mr. Samuel Govidha Wagh from Vanjurpada
“I thank God for this privilege. It is the right time to start the Sunday school inmy place. Please pray for me.”
- Mr. Praveen Barde from Vanjurpada
“I praise God for this good opportunity. Now I learnt how to teach children andto bring them closer to the Lord.”

Workers Together
I told the trainees that IEM was paying for the material. The trainees respondedby providing rice, oil, sugar and money as well. Every family contributed firewoodcosting around Rs. 200/-. Two believers even cooked the food!

These Beautiful People!
By God’s grace we visited our people – the
Lahaulis in Lahaul valley and shared the
Gospel with them. We started our journey,
a 13-day visit early from Kullu on June 6th, 2011.Although the distance from Kullu to Keylong(district headquarters) is only around 160kilometres, it was a tiring 9-hour journey toreach Keylong because of bad roads andlandslides resulting in traffic jams.
God helped us to visit 20 villages inside Lahaul valley. Villages here are verysmall, the biggest with 70 households, while the smallest has only 1 household.During summer, the Lahauli people cultivate their land for six months becausethey cannot work during winter. So they spend long hours in the fields.
We went from village to village, meeting people, sharing the Gospel anddistributing Gospel tracts to them. After resting in a contact’s house for the night,we would move on to the next village the next morning. Transportation is poor sowe trekked our way from village to village. We met around 68 families altogether. On account of a lack of time, we could not interact with some families so we gavethem Gospel tracts.
I thank God for the privilege He gave me to walk through this valley to meet thesebeautiful people. It was truly a joy for me to meet our people and share the
Gospel with them.

God Answered Our PrayersGod always answers our prayers. He knows what is good for us and where
and when to give us what we want. Our ministry has been growing in
Fatehpur for the past 5 yrs and finally in answer to prayer, Mr. Ramesh
Chander Prajapati from Rahimapur openly confessed his faith in the Lord on
June 30, 2011. He and his wife belong to the Kumhar people group and have 2
children.
We also started a cottage service in his home but due to threats from his
community, we stopped it in 2007. Yet we remained in touch with him and
constantly encouraged him using the Word. We feel honoured by God for ourlabour and believe He will continue to bring more souls in the days to come.

Freedom or Free Doom?
(Freedom can be dangerous! Sadly, over the decades as the modern era gives way
to the post modern age, we find that license to do what we want to do is becoming
more of a trend rather than the exception. And most young people like it that way.
Gradually, they become sucked into a system where freedom leads to certain
destruction and doom. Our Youth Secretary, Mr. Jenny Christopher examines this
way of life in the light of God’s Word and arrives at a startling, yet logical
conclusion. Read on.)
What does the word “freedom”
actually mean? Does it mean
that we have the license to
live a life built on greed, lust, pride,
power, prestige, gluttony, materialism,
violence, the pursuit of wealth or
acquiring worldly fame? According to
the great reformer Martin Luther, “True
freedom is not the right to do what you
want but rather the power to do what
you ought to do.”
Christian freedom is defined by the
apostle Paul in this way, “It is for
freedom that Christ has set us
free.”(Galatians 5:10) “You, my
brothers, were called to be free, but do
not use your freedom to indulge in the
sinful nature, rather, serve one another
in love. (Galatians 5:13). “The entire
law is summed up in a single command,
“Love your neighbour as yourself.”
(Galatians 5:14).
Another definition describes freedom
as, “The opportunity, ability and desire
to do that which will give you the most
joy for thousands of years from now.”
There are 4 definite components to real
freedom - Opportunity, Ability, Desire
and Lasting Joy. People do many things
in the name of freedom and this results
in their own destruction.
The freedom that Christ offers is
freedom from sin, not freedom to sin. A
truly free person can look at the future,
see the alternatives and then choose to
do what will make him genuinely happy.
Christians are free from the guilt of sin,
the penalty of sin, the shame of sin, the
power of sin and from the power of the
law of condemnation. However, we are
not yet free from the presence of sin.
That will happen only when we stand
before Jesus Christ. We are free from
the bondage to religious rituals and the
guilt of sin. Though we are free our
freedom can be misused!
We can misuse our freedom by allowing
fleshly desires to operate in our lives.
This leads to lust, anger, hatred,
bitterness and so on. Self gratification
can be obtained at the expense of God
and others. To indulge the acts of the
flesh is to live in slavery to it. Then we
are not free at all!
Having been set free, we are called to
become slaves to one another in love
for Christ’s sake. Jesus declares that His
followers could be distinguished by
their love for one another (John 13:35).
The Gospel changes the heart which
always leads to changed relationships. Co

Finally, we can say that freedom that is
not guided by love can turn into
destructive self-indulgence. When we
show love to others, we are fulfilling
the law of God. There cannot be bitter
strife where there is God’s love. In 1Corinthians 19:22, we read, “For though
I am free from all men… I have become
all things to all men, that I might by all
means save some. This freedom goes farbeyond the cheap substitutes the world
offers. We were born for it, made for it
and created by God to enjoy it! Watch
out! Don’t allow our freedom lead us to
Free Doom!
Missionary Biography: Jonathan Goforth
Not By Might, Nor By Power!Dr. Jonathan Goforth, famedCanadian missionary toChina, is reputed to have led13,000 Chinese to Christ, started hundreds of Chinesechurches and conductedhundreds of meetings wheregenuine spiritual revival tookplace in Manchuria andChina. Sometimes hismeetings lasted as long as 6 hours andfloors were soaked with tears ofrepentance for sins.
This hero of the faith grew up on thefamily farm near London, Ontario. Bythe time he was 5, his godly mother hadtaught him to read the Psalms. At 15,his father put him in charge of a secondfarm 20 miles away and visited himonly to check on his work and praisehim at harvest time.
At 18, Jonathan, convicted by a Gospelmessage, received Christ, and said,“Henceforth, my life belongs to Him whogave His life for me.” His commitment toChrist was complete.
His school teacher was an unbeliever, who, with other students, mercilesslymocked him until he led them all backto God. He began praying for hisfather’s conversion, started familyworship in their home, and saw Hisfather come to Christ. He distributedtracts to all who attended the morningservices at church and even started
evening services in an oldschool building.
When he went to Knox Collegein Toronto to prepare formissionary service, hisclassmates laughed at hishome made clothing, but heprayed and got busypreaching at the prison, working at rescue missions,
doing home visits, and sharing theGospel with everyone. Later, KnoxCollege students sent him to China astheir missionary!
Once, when he didn’t have money forhis fare to a preaching point, he wentas far as his funds would take him andwalked the remaining 10 miles. Comingacross some workmen, he shared Christwith them and invited them to the nextmorning’s service. Several came, and atleast one person found Christ. Jonathansaid, “I will gladly walk 10 miles anyday to bring one lost soul to Christ.”
When he had found that his own soulneeded Christ, it became his passion totake Christ to every lost soul. Is that thecase with us?
He and his wife, Rosalind, buried 5 oftheir 11 children in China. Finally, withtheir health broken and he blind, theyreturned to preach across NorthAmerica until his Coronation Day. “Notby might, nor by power, but by mySpirit declares the Lord.”
