Dear Friends,
Well, that’s it! My summer holiday is over – and the schools haven’t even broken up yet! And what a wonderful holiday it was. A time to do nothing. Which consists of sitting by the waterside – in this case, the loch side – in glorious sunshine – even in Scotland, it can be hot, apparently – and contemplate the world, and to read. Just perfect!
One of the books particularly struck me: ‘With the End in Mind’ by Kathryn Mannix. With a title like that it could have been a murder thriller, or even something sci-fi. But it was a collection of real-life stories of people facing death and dying – in hospital, in a hospice, at home.
‘That sounds gripping for a holiday read,’ you might say. But it was. Told with great humanity and insight, often with wonderful humour, these were stories of amazing courage but also of great ordinariness. You will meet Holly who danced her way through her last day; of Nelly and Joe, lovingly trying to shield each other from the truth, but so much stronger when they faced it together; of Bob who donates his cat to the consultant; and of so many others.
Kathryn is herself a palliative care consultant, but her mission is to help each of us face our last days as peacefully and as meaning-fully as we can, with as little medical interference as possible. It is to bring death and dying home to us, and help us face our mortality with joy and peace.
Through the stories, she helps us is see the process of dying – it doesn’t need to be painful or distressing, and there is a common pattern. She outlines the options available, and undoes the myths that surround death. The big ‘D’ word is brought down to size – to a size that we can all cope with, just as we always used to.
‘There are only two days with fewer than twenty-four hours in each lifetime, sitting like bookends astride our lives: one is celebrated every year, yet it is the other that makes us see living as precious.’
I thoroughly encourage you to get hold of this book. It could be a life-changer.
Happy Reading.
Yours,
Martin Warren.

Merton & Huish Wildlife Group
It is with great sadness that members and friends will have heard of the death of Graham Heaman.
Graham founded the Merton & Huish Wildlife Group and through his enthusiasm and commitment saw it grow from a handful of
members to the diverse group it is today. Through his connections he sourced many of our speakers and enabled many of the group’s
walks in areas not normally open to the public. Graham was the mainstay behind many of our initiatives: nest boxes in and around the
village, fundraising at local events and a wonderful advocate for all our local wildlife.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
For further information please contact Trevor Higton on 01805 603325
Remember we have a Facebook page, Merton and Huish Wildlife Group
Merton and Petrockstowe Heritage Group On July 13th, 13 members enjoyed a very interesting tour and talk at Lew Trenchard Manor.
Mrs Murray our tour leader was very knowledgeable on the Manor and Sabine Baring Gould and his family who lived there and still own the property. This was followed by a look around the church and a cream tea. A lovely afternoon visit.
The return trip to Tapley Park for a tour of the house with Hector Christie has been booked for Tuesday the 4th of September at 12 noon. Please let Ann know for numbers. This is free as Hector wasn't able to show us around in June.
In August I am trying to arrange a visit to Mike Paddocks farm to see his heavy horses and hear about his farming. As yet I haven't heard back but hopefully will soon.

The Merton Friendship Group Our Chairman, Mr. Roy Watts, welcomed ten members to our July meeting. Roy then introduced our speaker, Mr. John Crocker, who was accompanied by his wife. John gave a very interesting talk on growing up in Huish and Merton during the 1950’s and 1960’s. John was born and breed on a small farm called Broadmead, which had twenty nine acres. The family farmed mainly cows and some chickens. John’s mother had a reputation of producing very fine cream, some of which was in high demand in London. Local people also purchased their eggs and cream from John’s mother. We also learnt how two people could safely use one bicycle to ride from Huish to Torrington and beyond. Some of our members also grew up in the Merton—Huish countryside and many stories and reminiscences were exchanged. After a very interesting talk, which included much laughter the meeting concluded with refreshments, which included tea, coffee, a delicious malt loaf and short cake. Our August meeting will be on the second Wednesday of August. Wednesday 8th August at 2-00pm, at the Clinton Hall. Please note that the meeting will be a week late due to the North Devon Show. There will be no speaker, but group members should ready themselves for a telephone from Annette a day or two before the meeting. Our September meeting will be held on Wednesday 5th September at 2-00pm, at the Clinton Hall. Our speaker will be Mrs Soby, who will give us a talk on Russia. We welcome any visitors and new members, so please come and join us. There is a charge of £2-50 to cover the cost of the Hall hire, speaker’s expenses and refreshments, which include tea, coffee and a selection of home made cakes and goodies. If you have any questions please contact Annette Asteraki on 01805 603552

Sunday 23 September at 10 until 12 noon.
Future dates are Sunday 21 October and Sunday 18 November.
We very much look forward to seeing you!!
After hearing of Graham Heaman’s death, my thoughts and kind wishes go to Kenny and all the Heaman family
at this sad time.
I am deeply saddened by the loss that you and your family have encountered. My condolences
No one can prepare you for a loss; it comes like a swift wind. But take comfort in knowing that he is now resting
in the arms of our Lord.
