Keeping in touchMany members of our churches are classed as vulnerable, either through age or infirmity and they are likely to feel particularly isolated at this time, but it will be a difficult time for everyone. Within our Church family we are trying to organise a rota of people who will keep in touch with those who are more vulnerable. Mike Roome has offered to act as co-ordinator therefore if you know of anyone who might feel lonely and would welcome the occasional friendly phone call, or if you would be willing to act as a volunteer, please contact Mike on [email protected] or call him on 07770 795388.Unfortunately the current restrictions mean that we are still unable to publish a paper copy of The Herald this month, but whatever happens we intend to continue publishing The Herald online and we hope you will enjoy reading this enhanced version. Please share the link with as many people as possible who may be interested in what is going on in our four villages. There is the option at the bottom of the screen to print a paper copy. If you know people locally who would like to read The Herald, but do not have internet access, please consider printing a copy for them and popping it through their door. As the situation becomes clearer we will be publishing regular updates on our websites and on social media. If you know members of the Church family who do not have internet access, please try to keep them informed of developments.Contacts:

Worship in the BeneficeAt the time of writing it looks as though we will be unable to resume worship in any of our churches until at least the beginning of July. Even then it is likely that we will be severely restricted in what we can do. We will update our websites as soon as we have anything concrete to report, so do check the contacts shown on page 2 from time to time.We will continue to conduct our weekly services via Zoom at the following times:• 10.00am every Sunday - An act of worship with Spiritual Communion.• 3.00pm on the first Sunday of the month - An informal Family Service

with our children in mind.We open the Zoom meeting approximately 30 minutes before the service commences to give people attending a chance to chat with each other if they so wish. This also allows us time to resolve any problems that people may have with the technology. Please note: You do not need to have a computer to join in these services. It is now possible to take part by dialling in from any land-line or mobile phone. If you would like to try this please contact the Revd Jean for further information.

From the Ministry TeamIf any of you have been following the daily Covid19 press briefings from No. 10 Downing Street, you will know that a whole plethora of statistics is given on the infection rates, hospital admissions and deaths etc. as well as the latest updates on how the ‘Lockdown’ is being eased, which can be a tad confusing at times. Their slogan has now changed to ‘stay alert, control the virus, save lives’, however we might interpret that! However as Christians it isn’t the first time we have been told to stay alert - not necessarily alert to any kind of physical disease, but to be alert to our spiritual danger from the things that distract us from God, and to be alert to the things of God. Throughout the Bible God tells his people to be watchful, be on their guard and to be alert to what God is doing and to the dangers of falling into unrighteous ways. I Peter 5:7-8 reminds us to be humble, to cast all our cares onto Jesus because he cares for us. He tells us to be self controlled and alert to the wiles of the devil. St Paul in his letter to the Ephesians tells us to put on the whole armour of God, so that we can stand firm against the devil’s schemes,

Page 6: The Herald...The Revd Jean Andrews 3 Sewards End, Wickford, SS12 9PB Tel: 01268 733817 email: jean@rjandrews.me.uk The Revd Miranda Seaman - currently on placement elsewhere Curate

and not be led away from God by them.We are being urged to be alert to how God is working, and praising God for the many, many blessings we receive from his hands each and every day, both great and small, that we often aren’t always aware of. In Ephesians 6 we are told to put on the whole armour of God, adhering to the truth of the Gospel, living our everyday lives in ways that are righteous in God’s sight, living by faith trusting him in all circumstances in the knowledge that he is faithful, dependable, and always has our best interests at heart. St Paul concludes by telling us to be alert and to always keep on praying for all of God’s people, (and for the world, I would add!). One of the prayers that we use each week at the Benefice Prayer Group for our church, both clergy and congregations is St Paul’s prayer for the church in Phillipi. ‘We pray that our love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that we may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.’ We also conclude with a prayer of peace for each other ‘The peace of God be over us to shelter us, under us to uphold us, about us to protect us, behind us to direct us, ever with us to save us. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.’ During this time of Covid19, we aren’t able to meet together as a group, however be assured that we are continuing to pray in our own homes for the Benefice, for our village communities and our church congregations at our usual meeting time on a Tuesday morning at 10 am.If anyone would like to join with us then get in touch, and I’ll Email or send you a copy of the short service booklet that we use, and the prayer points etc. for each week.Keep alert and stay safe physically, emotionally and spiritually.Every Blessing

Trinity Sunday, celebrating our God who is Three Persons

The church celebrates Trinity Sunday on 7 June.Trying to explain the doctrine of the Trinity has kept many a theologian busy down the centuries. One helpful picture is to imagine the sun shining in the sky. The sun itself – way out there in space, and unapproachable in its fiery majesty – is the Father. The light that flows from it, which gives us life and illuminates all our lives, is the Son. The heat that flows from it, and which gives us all the energy to move and grow, is the Holy Spirit. You cannot have the sun without its light and its heat. The light and the heat are from the sun, are of the sun, and yet are also distinct in themselves, with their own roles to play. The Bible makes clear that God is One God, who is disclosed in three persons: Father, Son (Jesus Christ) and Holy Spirit. For example: Deuteronomy 6:4: ‘Hear O Israel, The Lord our God, the Lord is one.’Isaiah 45:22: ‘Turn to me and be saved… for I am God, and there is no other.’Genesis 1:1-2: ‘In the beginning God created…. and the Spirit of God was hovering…’ Judges 14:6: ‘The Spirit of the Lord came upon him in power…’John 1:1-3: ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.’ Luke 24:49 actually manages to squeeze the whole Trinity into one sentence. Jesus tells His disciples: ‘I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power (the Holy Spirit) from on high.’ In other words, the sun eternally gives off light and heat, and whenever we turn to its brilliant light, we find that the warmth and life is there as well.

News from St Margaret’sLike other churches up and down the country, having no service collections, wedding fees or fund raising activities means that our regular income has dropped off considerably. Unlike many churches, we are fortunate to have financial reserves to cushion the blow, but the majority of these are legally restricted so that they can be used only for the repair and maintenance of the church building.

Page 8: The Herald...The Revd Jean Andrews 3 Sewards End, Wickford, SS12 9PB Tel: 01268 733817 email: jean@rjandrews.me.uk The Revd Miranda Seaman - currently on placement elsewhere Curate

We are indebted to a committed group of our regular worshippers who have continued, or have set up new monthly standing orders to ensure that we have some funds coming in towards our necessary monthly expenditure. The benefit of closing the building is that we are paying very little for heating, lighting etc., but other regular expenditure amounting to over £3,000 per month continues. Included in that figure is £220 paid to contractors every 2 weeks in order to cut the grass in our churchyard. We were therefore delighted to learn that the Parish Council has just awarded the church a grant of £1,500 towards the cost of maintaining the churchyard and we thank them for their generosity. We are pleased to learn that many people are still including a visit to our churchyard as part of their daily exercise regime and with the splendid weather we have been having recently we are sure that they gain comfort from sitting a while in such a wonderful spot. One of our members was in the churchyard on 8 May when we celebrated VE day and was able to capture the Red Arrows flying overhead.

Unfortunately we have had to cancel our Fête and Flower Festival scheduled for the weekend of 27 & 28 June and we will have to wait and see how the situation develops before deciding whether it might be possible to rearrange this for later in the year.

Ascension Day serviceAscension Day was on Thursday 21 May and normally the benefice churches would have joined together for a service held at St Mary’s Ramsden Bellhouse. Unfortunately this was impossible this year, but several members from our benefice were able to join with people from the other Compass Group churches for a service conducted via Zoom.

Joan Clutterbuck’s Funeral ServiceLast month we reported on the passing of our friend and former Reader, Joan Clutterbuck. Her funeral was conducted in Bedford on 14 May and her brother Brian has sent us the following message.

Dated15 May 2020Dear all,Thanks to all of you who were thinking and praying for Joan and her family yesterday. It was a strange experience, to be sure, and one I hope not to repeat. The vicar and funeral director had prepared us well, so we knew what to expect. Standing, well distanced apart, outside the chapel while Joan’s coffin was carried in; waiting for the pall-bearers to exit the chapel, and a well-distanced procession into the chapel, to sit where the service sheets had been strategically placed. It felt eerie. Barbara and I were in the front row so, while I could imagine what it looked like, I couldn’t see it.The local vicar had managed only 2 or 3 visits to Joan in the short time before visiting was banned, but she spoke of Joan as if she were a friend she’d known for ages. She too had been a Lay Reader for many years before becoming a priest, so she was speaking on ‘home ground’. Her references to Joan’s Christian journey and to the value of her ministry - both officially, until illness forced her retirement - and subsequently, when her health improved a little, among her fellow-residents at The Laurels - were sincere, and much appreciated.

Your support was of huge value to me as I read the passage from John 14. As I was reading, I was filling all the empty seats in the chapel with the people who I know would have been there, if these had been normal times. Thank you so much.I do hope to be able to see many of you at Joan’s memorial service, whenever that may be, to thank you personally. We’ll certainly make sure that it’s well-advertised.With love from us all,Brian

As mentioned in last month’s copy of The Herald, we intend to hold a memorial service for Joan at St Mary’s Ramsden Bellhouse once things get back to normal.

Ramsden Heath Social Club NewsAs the coronavirus continues to dominate our lives, the Social Club is compelled to abide by the restrictions imposed by the government. We are continuing to send out newsletters and quizzes on line, but would much rather be looking ahead to the range of events we were beginning to organise before the lockdown began. At present, we can’t be sure when we will “start again” but be assured that we will let everyone know when our activities begin. In the meantime, the two Daves are always happy to talk about the club and what we will hope to be doing on the future.Stay safe!

Ramsden Heath Horticultural & Allotment Society

A message from the ChairmanDear MembersI hope everyone is safe and well during these very strange times. Fortunately, we are blessed with wonderful weather and able to enjoy our gardens and allotments.Due to the current situation with the coronavirus it has been decided that all Horticultural Society events will be cancelled until at least September. When the Committee are able to meet up again we will discuss the way forward regarding events and the reduction of membership fees next year.Obviously we miss seeing everyone at what would have been another excellent Spring and Summer Show and Allotment evening but, hopefully, it will not be too long before we meet up again. In the meantime, keep safe, keep well – and keep gardening!Terry Lowing

Other newsTrading Hut Elaine Harvey opened the hut for business on Friday 8 May and, despite it being VE Day when everyone was celebrating, sales did very well, with over £110 being taken. Of course, we are taking no money at the current time, but issuing credit notes which will be transferred into hard cash when things are back to normal.Elaine is planning to open again on Saturday 23 May which, unfortunately, will have come and gone before this edition reaches you. We know that this is a service that members would like to have and we are grateful to those who have offered to help run the trading hut which will now be open every Saturday morning from 10.00am to 12.00noon for at least the next six weeks. Thank you to all those who have volunteered. The format will be the same as before: orders taken and distributed by the server and no money will be exchanged, but a credit note given to be paid when we are back to normal conditions. If there is any produce you know you would like, please email Elaine at [email protected] or telephone her on 01268 711729 and she will get it ready for collection. The Society’s own ‘click and collect’.We would ask members to ensure they keep the 2 metre distance apart and not enter the Trading Hut.

There are limited stocks at the hut now as no new orders have been placed for this season, but if we can help with any produce we are more than happy to do so.

Pictures of what might have seen at our Spring ShowTo compensate those members who had worked hard on their Spring Show entries, we ran a ‘virtual’ Spring Show, but without the trophies unfortunately. Here is a sample of what might have been:

Ramsden Heath celebrates VE Day Friday 8th May 2020

On the 75th anniversary of the ending of the war in Europe (VE Day), hundreds of events had been planned all over the country to mark this special occasion. Sadly, these had to be cancelled due to Covid-19, but that didn’t stop the country from uniting in celebration with our own ‘lockdown’ parties – all keeping the 2m social distance of course.Ramsden Heath residents were amongst those celebrating with street parties all around the village as shown in these photos.

Christians and the bubonic plague of LondonIf we think the current situation is bad, the Ven John Barton looks back on the courage of Christians during the Great Plague of London in 1665. It puts our current death toll into perspective.

The Reverend Richard Peirson was one of the exceptions. Most of the other clergy in the City of London had fled the Great Plague in 1665, but Peirson stayed behind to look after the parishioners of St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street,

Page 18: The Herald...The Revd Jean Andrews 3 Sewards End, Wickford, SS12 9PB Tel: 01268 733817 email: jean@rjandrews.me.uk The Revd Miranda Seaman - currently on placement elsewhere Curate

16

where he was Rector. The parish was densely populated and the pandemic was catastrophic. The church’s register records 636 burials that year in the month of September alone, with 43 interred in one day.Houses of infected people were marked with a red cross on the door, with occupants kept inside for 40 days. Handcarts were pulled along the city streets to cart away the bodies; the drivers’ cries of “Bring out your dead”, became etched in the memories of subsequent generations. Relatives were banned from attending funerals. The official count numbered 68,596 deaths in London alone, but other estimates suggested two or three times that number. Bubonic plague – for that is what it was – was incurable. Poor people were fatalistic about it but complained that even their ‘spiritual physicians’ had abandoned them. Clergy of the Church of England were often supplanted by non-conformist preachers. It wasn’t just the St Bride’s Rector who put his life in jeopardy by staying at his post. While most wealthy people, along with King Charles II and his court, escaped the plague-ridden city, Churchwarden Henry Clarke also chose to remain at the church. When he succumbed to the illness, his brother William took over. William survived for a fortnight. Plague cases continued to occur sporadically at a modest rate until mid-1666. That year the Great Fire of London destroyed St Bride’s Church and much of the City of London. It was rebuilt to a design by Christopher Wren, but almost obliterated once more in 1940 during World War II before being restored yet again.Today’s Rector, Canon Alison Joyce, says that compared with her predecessor Richard Peirson, she has it easy. Like everyone else, she is confined by the lockdown rules to her Rectory next to the church. But her pastoral work continues, and she collates sermons and archive music to create a Sunday webcast service. Alison writes, “these days it is a ministry of telephone calls, emails and Facetime. I offer such practical help and support to the vulnerable as I can. I keep a candle burning before our main altar and continue a ministry of prayer.” Alison says she is surprised when people regard the faith as a kind of celestial insurance policy against bad things happening to them. The first followers of Jesus knew that in dedicating their lives to following the crucified and risen Christ, their discipleship would take them into the very heart of darkness, not away from it. She adds, “Hope is no hope at all unless it can engage with utter despair and meaninglessness.”

Help Identify the Next Bishop of ChelmsfordFollowing Bishop Stephen’s appointment as Archbishop of York, the process is now underway to discern who God is calling to be the next Bishop of Chelmsford. As part of this process, a diocese wide consultation is now open.Submissions are welcome from churches, groups and individuals until 4 July. Because of the current lockdown we are unable to meet to formulate a response on behalf of the Downham Benefice, but we would encourage you to submit your views by going to the Chelmsford Diocesan website www.chelmsford.anglican.org and following the link to “Consultation opens to help identify the next Bishop of Chelmsford”. The consultation will help to inform the Diocesan Statement of Needs. The Statement of Needs is an important document that will help the Diocese tell a story about who we are and what our priorities are for the future. It will be read by candidates and those who make decisions during the process.Prayer is at the heart of this process. The Very Reverend Nicholas Henshall, the Dean of Chelmsford has written a prayer for discernment which we encourage you to say as we embark on this important period for our diocese.

God of provision and care, discernment and knowledge: lead us in your love, empower us by your Spirit, and equip us with your gifts; give us hearts full of love for all people, minds open to the signs of the times, and wisdom to know how to respond to the voice of your calling; We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.

Bishop Stephen will be formally confirmed as Archbishop of York in a virtual service that will take place at 11.00am on Thursday 9 July. Because of the Coronavirus situation the service will be entirely conducted by video conferencing. The service, which had been due to take place in York Minster, will be in two parts: a legal ceremony with readings, prayers and music; and a film marking the start of Bishop Stephen’s ministry as Archbishop of York.

Mend and make doAccording to handicraft expert Kirstie Allsopp, a missing button was the number one reason why 350,000 tonnes of wearable clothing may end up in UK landfill this year. But that was before lockdown. Now you have time to make do – and mend! Rescue and reuse your clothes. After all, it saves money and the planet.

No — just an apple.7. Why did the unemployed man get excited while reading his Bible?

He thought he saw a job.8. Does God love everyone?

Yes, but He prefers ‘fruits of the spirit’ to ‘religious nuts’.9. Why couldn’t Jonah trust the ocean?

He just knew there was something fishy about it.10. What kind of man was Boaz before he married Ruth?

Absolutely ruthless.11. The good Lord didn’t create anything without a purpose.

Mosquitoes come close, though.12. What’s so funny about forbidden fruits?

They create many jams.

What it says on the sign• On a maternity room door: “Push. Push. Push.”• At an optician’s office: “If you don’t see what you’re looking for, you’ve

come to the right place.”• In the front yard of a funeral home: “Drive carefully. We’re happy to wait.”• In a restaurant window: “Don’t stand there and be hungry. Come on in and

get fed up.”• In a vet’s waiting room: “Be back in five minutes. Sit! Stay!”
