MacArthur Is Our August Movie

We will show the 1977 movie MacArthur at four p.m. Wednesday, August 20 at Peacock Hall. Gregory Peck stars as General Douglas MacArthur. This film encompasses MacArthur's escape to Australia, his return and liberation of the Philippines, the Japanese surrender and occupation, the Korean War, his removal by President Truman, and his return to the United States during the run-up to the 1952 presidential election. Rated PG, 2 hours and 10 minutes long, and shown with language captions. Additional information: John Littig, 256-8558.

!The Pew Research Center poll (June 27) reports 44% of Americans say they are “not proud of America.” Of those, 60% self-identify as liberal, 7% as conservative. In The Liberal Mind, the 16,000-word treatise by Lyle H. Rossiter, MD, a board-certified forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Rossiter diagnoses liberals with the mental disorder “transference neurosis.” National talk host Michael Savage, PhD, presents a similar view in Liberalism Is a Mental Disorder. Rational adults expect mentally ill and low-information voters to sing-song with the media and criticize the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. But rational adults do not expect Republicans to stupidly join the Democrat sing-song as Senator Rand Paul and some others are doing. “Stupidly” is a crude adverb, but necessary to accurately describe the verb “join” with Barrack Obama. Senator Paul should know: “past is prologue.” The famed quotations from Shakespeare’s The Tempest is engraved on the National Archives Building in Washington, and is often used by the military in preparing battle plans. In Looking Back at Iraq historian Victor Davis Hanson of Stanford’s Hoover Institute reminds readers of four irrefutable facts: 1. In 1998, Democrat President Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act calling for regime change. He said “My administration is compiling information of genocide and crimes against humanity by Iraq, and U.N. efforts to eliminate Iraq’s weapons and missile programs.”

2. In 2002, Democrats led by Biden, Clinton, Kerry, Pelosi, and Reid voted to remove Saddam Hussein by force. They had the same reports as President Bush from the Germans, French, British, and Israelis that Hussein used chemical and biological weapons (WMDs) against Iran, Kurds, Shiites, and Marsh Arabs, and also had a nascent nuclear program. 3. In 2003, a 48-nation “coalition of the willing” supported the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Moreover, the liberal NY Times editorial page columnist Thomas Friedman and the liberal Washington Post Associate Editor David Ignatius agreed---as did 70% of Americans. 4. In 2004-2007, the U.S. suffered over 4,000 war dead until the 2007-2008 surge by General Petraeus (opposed by the Democrats) curtailed losses. “An extraordinary achievement, Obama admitted of the “stable” and “self-reliant” Iraq he inherited. He then left, refusing to renew the 2008 status of forces agreement Bush had negotiated and the generals wanted. According to David Filkens of the New Yorker, every Iraqi political leader including Maliki told Obama: We want you to stay. We don’t want you to fight. We want 10,000 American troops inside the Green Zone training our army, giving us intelligence. We want you to stay. Obama pulled the troops out. Who lost Iraq? !
