“How bout that ride in?”
Research:
In order to realistically create a sociopathic psychiatrist, it was necessary for us to understand the certain psychological disorders each of the patients suffered from. Therefore, we researched the symptoms and treatment online at:
http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/mental-health-
types-illness Here we found information on Obsessive-compulsive
disorder, Schizophrenia, and depression. Also, we did extensive research in “exposure therapy”, where the patient is forced to experience what they fear head on in hopes of lessening the fear as the exposure increases. This allowed us to create the background for characters and different influences or characteristics they have to shape their dialogue, attire, or mannerisms.
We took ideas and personal experience to create the
settings of the film, the interrogation room and the doctor’s office. We scouted out a real location that had all the characteristics we wanted to bring to the doctor’s office. Through Photoshop and GoogleSketchUp we were able to recreate our vision of both rooms.
Also, we need to understand how each section of
preproduction was formatted and what was necessary to include.
The Psychiatrist

October, 2010
Present Day. Chicago, Illinois. Day. Dr. ALDOUS ANDERSON sits in a downtown Chicago police station with an ill-lit interrogation room. His demeanor seems calmer than a man in his situation should be. His well-coordinated outfit including a sweater vest, suit jacket and khaki pants, all sized appropriately for his stature indicates he being a smart, well-kept man. Det. BRAD BRASS, a well-built, street tough detective is briefed on the other side of the two-way mirror. He enters the interrogation room in a confident, dominating manner, though the doctor does not feel threatened. The Detective carries himself as though he has a great deal on his mind. He is troubled. The two share a back and forth dialogue which ultimately determines their distaste for the other. The detective wastes no time in asking the doctor to recall why he thinks he is there. The doctor doesn’t flinch as he replays each on of his patients whom he used to manipulate. The doctor begins recalling the first patient, HENRY, and the immoral, unethical therapy he used on him. Henry suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder and was thrown into a damp, dungeon-esque room with rats and disease, thus forcing him to endure what he is afraid of. Interrogation room. The detective and doctor share a back and forth discussion on the ethical repercussions of what the doctor did. The doctor has his reasons as to why he did it in this way, and the detective is trying to figure out exactly what is wrong with the doctor.
The doctor then begins to discuss his second patient/victim, KATIE. Katie is put into a hypnotic state in which she is certain her worst fears and demons are all around her though they are not and the doctor is the only one who can snap her out of it. The detective grows more and more angry with the doctor as he continues to tell his patients stories, almost to the point of him getting violent with the doctor. The doctor remains calm and collected because he knows he is getting into the detectives head. The doctor then begins recalling his third patient/victims name, ERIN. Erin is the Detective’s manic-depressive daughter. The detective becomes enraged to the point of insanity, based on what the doctor discusses with him. The detective lunges at the doctor in a fit of rage. Blood boils in the detective’s eyes. Other policemen barge in and drag the still fighting detective out of the room. The detective screams and shouts with all his being, as if the world around him has shattered. We see the doctor sitting in the interrogation room just as he was in the beginning, but even more content with his social experiments. He bears no guilt for what he’s done to his patients and the detective. Three weeks later we see the Det. in a mental hospital, not the strong, determined, thick-headed detective he once was. He moans and wails for his lost loved ones and for the inner anguish and guilt he feels inside. The doctor is carted off to jail in chains and an orange jump suit, as he lets out an eerie, sadistic laugh.
1 INT. INTERROGATION ROOM-DAY 1
Detective BRAD BRASS enters a dimly lit interrogation room where the suspect, Psychiatric doctor ALDOUS ANDERSON is being held. Dr. Anderson calmly looks up from the table at his interrogator and around the bleak room. Detective Brass brings a chair from the back of the room up to the table where Dr. Anderson is seated and sits across from him.
BRASS
(Sarcastically)Hello Dr. Anderson...I’m so glad we finally got a chance to meet.
Dr. Anderson glances at his interrogator, a smile spreading across his face.
ALDOUS Believe me detective, I’ve been waiting for
this day too.
BRASS
Oh, have you? ALDOUS Oh, yes. I have just heard so much about you. It’s nice to put a face to it all. BRASS Is that so? And just what have you heard and from whom? ALDOUS
Oh, I think we both know that detective. A very decorated war veteran with honorable discharge. Wonderful wife and a beautiful daughter. Rough Cop with a dark side and always willing to get physical.
BRASS You think you know about me, based on what other people tell you, you don’t know shit about me, jack. I got information on you that could put you away for life.
ALDOUS I’m shaking.
BRASS
I’m just getting started, doc. ALDOUS
(mockingly) So I see we have the “bad cop” here. Where’s the nice guy? This routine always has to have a nice guy.
BRASS
Not in the real world, Anderson. It’s just you and me.
ALDOUS
Yes, three really is a crowd.
BRASS Alright enough of this crap. I’m not gonna deal with your bullshit mind games. I don’t mess with mind games. I’ll get what I need to know from you one way or another, no matter how long it takes or what I have to put you through. ALDOUS
Well, threatening me, detective, isn’t going to get you anywhere soon now is it?
Detective Brass is forced to restrain his anger though his face is clearly turning red, and a large vein is starting to protrude from his neck.
BRASS
(hesitating, but frustrated) My apologies. But remember one thing, doctor: I’m not stuck in here with you. Your stuck in here with me.
BRASS So why don’t we get started? How bout we start at the beginning Aldous? Let’s talk about Henry...
Doctor Anderson shifts in his chair a bit, but retains his overall calm disposition. The two stare into each other’s eyes intensely.
2 INT. FLASHBACK TO OFFICE OF DR. ANDERSON 2
ALDOUS (V.O) Ahhh Henry...I remember the day we met. He came to my office in need of therapy for severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. At the time I was experimenting with some different procedures of exposure therapy, however they were lacking in intensity. He liked order, was afraid of germs, you know, those types of things typical to his disorder.
3 INT. INTERROGATION ROOM-DAY 3
As Aldous spoke, a smile started to spread across his face again, causing the detective to have a sudden chill down his back.
ALDOUS What I had been doing just didn’t seem to be working.
4 INT. OFFICE OF DR. ANDERSON-DAY 4
Henry nervously sits in a small office speaking to Dr. Anderson, who intently listens to his problems.
HENRY
...and some days I can’t even leave my home...
Henry’s face becomes tired and distraught, trying to think of the next thing to say.
ALDOUS I understand this is difficult Henry, but it is all a part of the process to get you well.
HENRY
I know, but I’m still just so scared. (Crying) Just make me normal. Make me not feel like a freak. ALDOUS
Are you willing to go to extremes, Henry? To do what is necessary?
5 INT. INTERROGATION ROOM-DAY 5
ALDOUS For a while I tried everything that I could with Henry. We talked about his problems, hoping that would resolve, or reveal a deeper-seeded issue. Unfortunately, getting nowhere...
The smile faded from his face, showing the lines around his mouth.
ALDOUS I also tried hypnosis, but that failed as well. Henry couldn’t face his problems by talking, all I wanted to do was make him better.
BRASS
You sure that’s all you wanted to do Aldous?
ALDOUS Yes, detective, that’s all I wanted...So I tried something a little more extreme.
6 INT. BASEMENT CELLAR-DAY 6
(flashback) We see Aldous walking Henry, who is blindfolded, into a small room that is covered in filth and rats. He closes and locks the door, leaving Henry inside to endure his disgust of germs and disease. There is a small window on the outside of the door and Aldous watches as Henry removes his blindfold and backs into the corner, wide-eyed and panicked. Aldous calmly leaves his patient to endure the circumstances.
ALDOUS (V.O)
He didn’t respond to the circumstances well. He grew scared, which eventually turned to anger. Day’s passed and he didn’t progress. It wasn’t until one day I went to view him, only to find him hanging from a pipe.
7 INT. INTERROGATION ROOM-DAY 7
Brass is quickly growing more and more angry with the doctor. He is sweating and clenching his fists across the metallic table that separates them.
BRASS So you just left him there to die you son of
a bitch?
ALDOUS (In a colder tone.) Of course not, detective. I left him there to improve himself. I told you, I was only doing what needed to be done to help him.
(Regaining his calm, collective character) He needed exposure in order to overcome his disease.
(Trailing off) Just like the others...
BRASS
I see...And you think you can just contain people like that? Hold them without their consent until they lose their minds?
Aldous looks up at his interrogator again with a more serious, stern look on his face.
ALDOUS (Raising his voice) What happened with Henry was not my intention.
BRASS We’re not here to talk about intentions, doctor. Henry was a good man... and a good friend, my friend. He was always a little off... but thanks to you, he’s not going to have the change to get better is he? Is he?
ALDOUS I gave him the chance, detective. He chose not to get better.
BRASS
No psych in the world would agree with what you did.
ALDOUS
If everyone did everything the same way with no changes, then the world would still be flat, detective.
BRASS
But who are you to change how it’s done? What give you the right.
ALDOUS
Initiative, detective. I’m the cutting edge. The future or the psych world.
BRASS
But your techniques didn’t work! They failed!
ALDOUS
Trial and error, detective. I never said I had it perfect. That’s what experimenting
is. BRASS
Your trial costs lives! Innocent people, people I knew! Friends and family! Why them? Why me? ALDOUS Katie survived and I still believe there is hope for her.
BRASS Katie is locked up in the loony bin because of you, you son of a bitch. You screwed with her head and made her worse than she ever was! How is that fair?
ALDOUS Katie was helpless when she came to me. A paranoid schizophrenic, she became a danger to herself and others, living in fear of those who loved her, almost violent.
8 INT. OFFICE OF DR. ANDERSON-DAY 8
(Flashback) Katie, in her 40’s, sits across from the doctor discussing her issues with delusions. She has her hair straight back in a ponytail and an outfit looking as though she put no effort to look presentable. She is crying.
KATIE
I just can’t get away from them. My family, my friends, everyone. I hear them talking about killing me. My own husband and son, do you believe that? I’m not safe doctor. If need be, I will defend myself.
ALDOUS
Are you sure it’s your family and friends that you’re afraid of Katie?
KATIE Well, yes, at least I think so.
ALDOUS
Could it be that you’re manifesting your fears onto them? That it is not actually them that are going to hurt you, but its how you perceive them? I want to try something with you Katie. I’m going to hypnotize you so you see the world in a different way. Ways that will help you cope with these demons.
KATIE
In what way, doctor?
ALDOUS Just lay back. Trust me.
9 INT INTERROGATION ROOM-DAY 9 BRASS
And you put her into hypnosis, where she sees the world as a hellish nightmare. You sick son of a bitch. She can’t function in the real world because of the one you blinded her with.
ALDOUS
That is all up to her. If she so desperately wants to get well, what better way to do it than face her fears head on. She would have snapped and killed a loved one had I not done what I did. She can come out of it, but it is up to her.
BRASS Why not just snap her out of it? Stop her
suffering. ALDOUS
Because that would put her right back where she was. No change, no nothing. At least this is a step in some sort of direction.
BRASS
It’s not the right direction!
ALDOUS
So you think. If you think about it she is really no different than she was before hypnosis, I just kept her from hurting others. She is confronting her fears on a constant basis and over time I believe it will not affect her with the same fear as it once did.
BRASS By destroying her perspective on reality.
ALDOUS
Her perspective was already destroyed, detective. BRASS You didn’t do nothing but make her life turn into a living hell you psychopath.
10 INT. INSANE ASYLUM-DAY 10
Katie is in a padded room wearing a straight jacket, hysterical. There is a window in the room, only some of the sunlight is shining in because its rays are blocked by various bars and a metal screen. KATIE Help me! Why!?
11 INT. INTERROGATION ROOM-DAY 11
The doctor calmly smiles at his interrogator, who still paces in front of the table where he is seated.
ALDOUS You see detective, all part of the process.
At this, the detective grabs another chair from the table and throws it against the wall. He then leans down until he is face-to-face with the doctor, who can sense his effect on the distempered detective, by the anger behind his eyes. However, the doctor is still
very calm and soft-spoken. ALDOUS Getting to be too much for you
detective?...But I thought you wanted to know the truth.
The door to the interrogation rooms bursts open and two other policemen barge in to restrain the detective. They pull him away from the doctor, for fear that he might hurt their suspect. DET. BRASS (Turning away from the doctor and speaking softly to the two men)
I’m fine, I just got a little heated is all. I just want a few more minutes with him. ALDOUS I think I struck a nerve.
The two officers hesitate for a moment while exchanging concerned glances, then nod in agreement and exit the room, leaving the doctor and detective alone again.
DET. BRASS
Okay, Aldous. This ends now. We all know where you’re going after this. I just wanted to know why.
ALDOUS But wait detective, you haven’t heard the best part of the story yet. Don’t you want to know about Erin?
The detective shakes his head and turns away from the doctor, avoiding the subject. The doctor smiles again, still watching the detective’s movement.
DET. BRASS
You shut your fucking mouth, Anderson.
ALDOUS
Detective, it is not healthy to bottle up those emotions. Why don’t I help you work through these problems?
DET. BRASS
I’m not falling for you psycho-babble bullshit. She was sick. There was nothing I could have done to make it better.
(Throwing his fists on the table again) She was depressed Aldous! Depressed!
ALDOUS Why was she depressed Detective Brass? I recall her telling me of a mother and father who never seemed to help.
DET. BRASS
We tried! We did everything, god damnit!
ALDOUS Did you do everything for that girl Detective? Did you listen? Did you take the time to understand? I think not. Erin came in to my office suffering from extreme depression. She had no self-esteem and was extremely introverted, but smart. She was contemplating suicide.
12 INT. PSYCHIATRIST’S OFFICE- DAY 12 (flashback)ERIN sits in the Aldous' office, head down
with a sorrowful look on her face. Aldous sits across from her staring intently. They sit in silence until she finally speaks.
ERIN I just don’t see the point anymore.
ALDOUS To what, Erin?
ERIN
To living. Living with this constant sadness. To not being able to put a positive aspect on life. I don’t get happiness from my life. I serve no purpose. I don’t enjoy anything anymore. I go to
school and avoid any contact with people. I come home and end up alone in my room. I don’t think I have eaten dinner with my family since I was about nine. I don’t feel like I make a difference in the world and if I wasn’t here no one would even notice.
ALDOUS
What about those around--your family and friends—have you considered confronting them about your depression?
ERIN
Can’t talk to them.
ALDOUS Even your parents?
ERIN
A mother who doesn’t understand and a father who is never around aren’t the best solutions. It just how they are. I don’t see them changing any time soon. I’m tired of seeking attention. Everyone has made it perfectly clear that I’m not worth anyone’s time.
There is silence for a few moments.
ALDOUS
Tell me about your father.
ERIN I haven’t established a good enough relationship to determine an opinion really. He’s hardly ever home. He isolates himself from everyone around him. It hurts my mother, but he’s doesn’t do anything to make it better. ALDOUS I want you to know that were making progress in these sessions, Erin. ERIN I don’t see how. I don’t feel any better.
ALDOUS
And why would you? I feel sorry for you; a mother who doesn’t understand and a father who is never there. It’s not your fault.
13 INT. ERIN’S BEDROOM - DAY 13
We see a pair of lifeless feet lying at the foot of a bed with pastel colored sheets. There is a trail of blood running down the side of the bed. They are Erin’s feet. She has committed suicide. A flash fills the room from the camera of a detective. The detective runs in, sobbing, unwilling to cope with what has happened. His wife is in the background crying. The detective screams and cries as he is escorted out of the room so the medical teams can finish removing her body.
14 INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - DAY 14
The detective is beginning to crumble. He begins recalling all the horrifying truths about the deaths of his loved ones he tried so desperately to repress.
ALDOUS
Passing off your daughter to someone else when all you had to do was care. Not very righteous, detective.
DET. BRASS
No!
ALDOUS While you were supposedly making a difference in the world cleaning up the streets, you couldn’t clean up your own mess detective! So you brought her to me, and I saw that the problem didn’t lie with Erin, it was with you. How could you let that happen, dad?
DET. BRASS No! I did all I could. I was going to stay home more. I should have been around more. But I’m still not like you. Damnit I tried!
I had to support my family; I lost sight of what was really important.
ALDOUS
At the expense of those around you. Henry was your friend. Katie was your family. Erin was your daughter. You put away the criminally insane when you should have been more sympathetic to their mental capacity. DET. BRASS (shocked) What?...I was doing good. I was helping keep scum and filth off the street. You view it as people shouldn’t be help accountable for their actions…that they aren’t responsible. Some people deserve to be locked up. You tricked all of them! You didn’t help them. They’re dead! You ruined their lives to get to mine! I’ll kill you.
ALDOUS I could have helped them and yet you cast them out of society. Your perspective had to be altered. I had to bring into your view the fine line between mental stability and insanity. That could only be done if I slowly picked away at those around you. You were the subject of my experiment. You were the one who had to learn. I deserve an award. I put in to perspective how a human being can flip by slowly tearing down the world around him, like caterpillar nibbles on a leaf. Am I still stuck in here with you detective?
BRASS
NOOOOO!
At that moment the detective gives one last lunge at the doctor, his hands clasped around doctors neck. In the next few moment’s two armed men enter the room and grab the detective. He is relentless, fighting them as they drag him out of the interrogation room. He cries and screams.
BRASS AHH! WHY!? Bring them back! I want them back!
Aldous sits in his chair and composes himself by straightening his jacket and tying his tie. The same smug smile fills his face as two more men escort him to the cell where he remains for the rest of his life.
ALDOUS Goodbye, detective. 15 INT. MENTAL HOSPITAL CELL - DAY 15 Three weeks have passed since the interrogation. We see the
Detective wrapped in a straight jacket sitting on the floor of an all while, padded room. It is dark in the room except the light coming through the window. The light is cut into sections from the bars on the windows. He moans and wails out of sheer guilt and inner anguish.
BRASS
AHHHHHHHH! 16 INT. JAIL CELL - DAY 16
Aldous sits, reading in his cell quite contently. The cell is kept tidy for the circumstance. There are newspaper articles about the detective and the incidents posted up all around him. We continue to hear Brass scream as though Aldous can hear it. Aldous lets out a menacing cackle.
BRASS (V.O.)
GET ME OUT OF HERE! HELP ME!
End.
