FROM THE PASTOR
What is Evil? Previous columns discussed the fundamental difference between animals and persons, which can be
known simply through reason. Animals must follow their instincts, but persons have free choice, even the
ability to choose against our instincts. Persons decide on our choices (and on what we believe) based not
only on reason, but also based on a reasonable trust (faith) in others.
So how is it that persons can choose to do evil? And just what is “evil”?
There are actually two very different kinds of evil: “physical evil” (sometimes called “natural evil”) and
moral evil.
A physical evil is not caused by the deliberate action of a person.
If a shark bites off the tail of a seal, it is an evil for the seal, but the
shark is not a person, it is only following its instincts. Or if termites
make a hole in the bottom of a boat, it is an evil for the boat, but
again the termites are not persons, they are only following their
instincts. Both of these would be cases of physical evils. Note that in
both cases, the evil is not a thing, but the absence of something!
Specifically, it is the absence of something that should be there,
something that is proper to the nature of the thing. It is proper to the
nature of a seal to have a tail, so when it does not have a tail, it is a
physical evil for the seal. It is proper to the nature of a boat to have material to keep it from leaking water,
so that a hole in the bottom of the boat is a physical evil for it.
Moral evil is a chosen action, an intentional action of a person. To put it very simply, it is to choose to
treat other persons without proper regard for their great dignity as persons. For example, it is a moral evil to
choose to murder a person, since this is a denial of his or her dignity as a person. When we know the great
dignity that is possessed by each person, the appropriate response is to love each person, to desire the
good for each person.
Note that when a person chooses a physical evil, that does not necessarily mean it is a moral evil. A
doctor who chooses to amputate the severely infected leg of a patient is choosing to remove what is proper
to the nature of a person (to have a leg), but he is removing the leg for the true good of the person, fully
respecting the dignity of that person.
If we know the great dignity of each person, how can we choose to act against that dignity? This is
something of a mystery, the mystery of sin. It involves our choosing to focus on another good that goes
against the dignity of the person. For example, consider a thief who is willing to kill a person for his wallet.
Even if the thief is aware that his victim has great dignity, the thief chooses to focus on the good of the
wallet of money that he hopes to get from his crime. It is a far less good than the dignity of the person, but
that is the great freedom we have, even to choose to do moral evil by focusing on lesser goods and ignoring
the dignity of persons!
The big question remains: Why would a good God allow us to do moral
evil? The short answer is that if we could not choose to do moral evil, than
we could not choose to do moral good. If God had created us so that we
always had to do the right thing, we would not have the great dignity of
being persons, but we would be more like robots, unable to make our own
choices. Our ability to choose moral evil is the price for us to be persons,
to have free will. God is a person Who invites us, as persons, to be
members of His beloved family and to share in His peace, love and joy.
Our free will is a great gift God has given to us, but it is a gift we must use
well if we are to truly be children of our Heavenly Father and have fellowship
with Him!

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members
of our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and
physical suffering may they find consolation in your healing

DEL PARROCO
Santo Tomas More
