Very little activity occurring during the summer. I want to thank all the Auxiliary members who assisted the day of the Clamfest. A successful endeavor by all. Again I would like to remind all that donations are needed for our Homefront Hugs box. Rosemary has worked very hard on this project, and I would hate to see if drop by the wayside. I know it’s summer and we don’t have regularly scheduled meetings, but if you’re in for dinner or just stopping in, please bring items for the boxes. Also coming up in September, our Auxiliary is hosting the Fall Conference on September 11th. Jayne Fust is graciously chairing this project. Please offer any assis-tance for that project also. We will have a meeting prior to this event, but just about 1 week prior. Guess that’s about it for now. I hope you are all en-joying the summer weather and keeping cool. Till next month! Pvt. Jason Jackson was employed by the American Legion in Cicero as a cook before enlisting in the United States Army in Febru-ary 2008. He did his basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, selecting the field of Tank & Field Artillery. Jason graduated in April and shortly after was assigned to Fort Sil, Oklahoma for AIT Training. While Jason was home for 3 weeks on

leave he joined us for an evening of horseshoes. Pvt. Jackson has reported for his first assignment in South Korea where he will be stationed for one year. He plans to fin-ish his 3 year enlistment and continue with the US Army as his career. We are proud to call Jason “Our Own” and wish him safe duty and God’s Speed. We will be posting his email and ‘snail mail’ addresses on the bulletin board at the Post.

A Priceless GiftA Priceless GiftA Priceless Gift By Senator John A. DeFrancisco This summer you have the opportunity to give a lifesaving gift without ever opening your wallet. The Red Cross is asking every-one in our community to consider donating blood. During the summer months blood inventory can drop to criti-cal levels, because more blood is being distributed than col-lected. According to the American Red Cross, blood donations decrease by about 15 percent during the summer. Donations de-cline mostly because high schools and colleges typically don’t sponsor blood drives during the summer, and many Americans take vacations and enjoy warm weather activities in lieu of donat-ing blood. Each day, our region needs to collect about 1,200 units of blood to maintain a sufficient blood supply. The Red Cross strives to maintain a five to seven day supply to ensure that hos-pital patients receive the treatment they need. However, in the summer the levels drop significantly. Currently, our region is experiencing shortages of all blood types, which can mean rationed blood supplies and cancelled surgeries. Our blood supply is at three days, and supplies of blood types O Negative and A Negative are lowest. Keeping a sufficient blood supply is vital because when a personal medical crisis or a manmade natural disaster occurs, blood must be ready and available. According to the American Red Cross about every two seconds someone in America needs blood. Donating blood is fairly simple. It only takes about an hour, but it can have a lifesaving impact on another individual. In fact, each pint of blood donated during a blood drive can help save up to three lives. Blood donors must be at least 17-years-old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. 16-year-olds may do-nate blood with a consent form. Many of us fit into this category and could be donating blood more regularly. We cannot just assume that others will fulfill the need. Lo-cally, only about four percent of the people who are eligible to give blood actually do so. Each one of us can help save lives by donating our blood. I urge you to call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit www.DonateBloodNow.org to make an appointment to donate your blood or find out about upcoming blood drives. You can also help by encouraging your friends and family to give blood.
